All bets are off
In a blog last Novermber I blasted a decision by Michigan State University - one of my favorite institutions of higher learning - to climb into bed with Caesars Sportsbook, an online gambling operation.
I’m happy to report that unholy alliance is kaput. The deal, struck only last January, is off.
Caesars had agreed to pay the school’s athletic department $9 million in exchange for the right to “Caesarize” MSU  - i.e., entice students to blow their money on betting and, (best-case-scenario, from Caesars’ point of view) develop life-long gambling addictions
How anybody (aside from Caesars’) thought that was a good idea only speaks to the blind scramble for money in college athletics. Indeed, it’s all about the Benjamins.
It’s not clear whether the 180 is the result of new leadership at MSU, or a change of heart on the part of of those who signed the Caesars deal.
Referring to the about-face, MSU athletic director Alan Haller was quoted as saying,“Initially, it was a good thing, but I don’t think it’s in our best interest moving forward,”

BetMGM Expands Mobile Sports Betting in Washington D.C.
The only online sports betting market in Washington D.C. is no longer restricted to a 2-block radius for BetMGM. This is because of the recent approval of the D.C. Council’s FY2025 budget. Thus, BetMGM Expands Mobile Sports Betting in Washington D.C. to the entire Washington D.C. district. Previously, FanDuel had a near monopoly on mobile sports betting. However, the monopoly came to an end in…

Why not? 😂
Yes, this is way too early, and, yes, we're calling this a 2025 NFL Mock Draft ... but maybe a better way to look at this is not as your garden-variety mock draft -- "Here's who your team will take 51 weeks from now having no idea how the current roster and subsequent season unfolds" -- but as a guide to the college players you should keep an eye on during the 2024 season. As always, the conversation will start with the quarterbacks, but as we sit here, there are no Caleb Williams-type prospects – though no one was talking up Jayden Daniels or J.J. McCarthy last May, either.
Again, to reiterate: This is less "mock draft" than "handy list of names to look out for in the fall." That said, we have to mention this: the draft order is using Caesars Sportsbook's Super Bowl odds (prior to Round 1) but in reverse order. We know folks are going to be very angry about why we have their team picking so high, but it's not our fault. These are your team's odds of winning a Lombardi Trophy, as determined Las Vegas.
If nothing else, using the betting odds means that, for the third straight year, the Panthers have the No. 1 overall pick. Hopefully first-year coach Dave Canales can get the most out of Bryce Young, but if that doesn't happen … you'd have to imagine quarterback at No. 1 (for the second time in three drafts for Carolina) will be a talking point.

Denver Nuggets will look to regain home-court advantage when they battle the Miami Heat in Game 3 of the 2023 NBA Finals on Wednesday. After opening the series with an 11-point win, the Nuggets fell 111-108 in Game 2 on Sunday. The Heat (44-38), who are 13-7 this postseason, have been red hot at home, going 7-2 there this postseason. The Nuggets (53-29), the No. 1 seed in the West for the first time in franchise history, are 13-4 in the playoffs, but just 4-3 on the road.
Tipoff from Kaseya Center in Miami is set for 8:30 p.m. ET. Denver leads the all-time series 39-35, and has won 10 of the past 12 matchups. Denver is a 2.5-point favorite in the latest Heat vs. Nuggets odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over/under for total points scored is set at 214.5. Before making any Nuggets vs. Heat picks
A former lead writer for Covers and The Linemakers, Hartstein combines a vast network of Vegas sources with an analytical approach. He excels in the NBA, especially when picking Denver Nuggets games. Over the past 99 Denver matchups, he is 58-38-3 against the spread, returning $1,625 for $100 players.
Now, Hartstein has set his sights on Heat vs. Nuggets and just locked in his picks and 2023 NBA Finals predictions.
Despite the Game 2 loss, Denver center Nikola Jokic remains on a historical playoff run. On Sunday, Jokic scored 41 points on 16 of 28 shooting from the floor, and grabbed a series-high 11 rebounds and four assists for his 47th career playoff double-double and 14th of this postseason. He now has four career playoff games with 40 or more points, tying Alex English for second all-time in Denver's history, only trailing Jamal Murray, who has five. In 17 playoff games this year, he is averaging 30.4 points, 12.9 rebounds, 10.1 assists and 1.1 steals. He is averaging a triple-double and has nine this postseason, including six in the last eight games.
Murray is also helping to carry the Nuggets' offense. He is also coming off a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists to go along with four rebounds. In the Game 1 win over the Heat, he registered a double-double with 26 points and 10 assists with six rebounds and one steal. It was his sixth consecutive game of scoring 25 or more points. In 17 postseason games, he is averaging 27 points, seven more than his season average. He is also averaging 6.6 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals.
Small forward Jimmy Butler reached 20 or more points for the third time in four games in the Game 2 win. He scored 21 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed four rebounds. In 19 postseason games, Butler has been a difference-maker. He is averaging 27.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.9 steals. His playoff-high was 56 points in a Game 4 first-round win over top-seeded Milwaukee on April 24. He also scored 42 in the decisive Game 5 overtime win over the Bucks on April 26 in Milwaukee.
Center Bam Adebayo is averaging 23.5 points in the series, and is coming off a 21-point and nine-rebound performance in Game 2. He also dished out four assists and blocked two shots. He was one rebound shy of recording his fourth consecutive double-double. In the Game 1 loss to Denver, he poured in 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to go along with five assists. In Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals vs. Boston, he had 12 points and 10 rebounds. In 20 postseason games, he is averaging 17.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

As MSU is ‘Caesarized,’ the Lansing State Journal shrugs
On Nov. 29 I wrote about what I consider an unholy alliance between universities - Michigan State, in particular - and promoters of online gambling.
That blog was prompted by a year-long investigation by New York Times reporters into how schools throughout the country are selling their souls to the Internet gambling industry.
I questioned why institutions of higher learning would promote socially-destructive behavior. MSU, for example, has jumped into bed with Caesars Sportsbook, which according to the Times, will pay $8.4 million for the opportunity to “Caesarize” the school. Among other things, Caesars gets access to MSU’s database of 775,000 fans.
I figured that once the Times story broke,  the newspaper I worked for 35 years - the Lansing State Journal - would jump all over it. After all, MSU is squarely in the Journal’s wheelhouse.
Time passed and the Journal seemed to be ignoring the story. Wondering if the staff there even knew about the Times investigation, I sent an email to LSJ executive Stephanie Angel and sports columnist Graham Couch in which I expressed my surprise at their apparent indifference. I know them personally as dedicated journalists, which made the situation all the more curious.
I got a reply from Couch. whose response was both thoughtful and disconcerting. He gave me permission to quote most of what he wrote. Here’s the meat of it:
“Adding gambling to the (colleges sports)  mix is just one more thing in a bizarre, greedy and somewhat unhealthy system that the rest of the world finds absurd. Then again, higher education can be pretty money-grubbing, too. So maybe it all fits.
“Sports gambling, though, has been paying for a large chunk of college athletics for a while - long before it was legalized in Michigan and many other states..
“People don't watch MACtion on Tuesday nights because they care about Toledo. Without gambling, TV audiences would be substantially less, which means media rights deals would be less, which means resources would be less for athletes and staff ...”

How Aerodynamics are Redefining Speed in Modern Endurance Racing
Tumblr media
The views and representations in this article are not necessarily the views and representations of RPM Magazine, it's staff or it's customers.  This is an outside article not written by RPM Staff. How Aerodynamics are Redefining Speed in Modern Endurance Racing Evolution of Aerodynamics in Endurance Racing Early Aerodynamics and Streamline Designs In the early 20th century, racecar design centered on streamlining, aimed at reducing drag and increasing top speeds. These initial efforts were fruitful for achieving high velocities on straight courses but resulted in drawbacks when navigating corners due to added weight and handling issues. Ground Effect Aerodynamics The 1970s and 1980s introduced ground effect aerodynamics, dramatically transforming race car dynamics. This method employed venturi tunnels beneath the car to generate substantial downforce by creating low-pressure areas. However, these designs were sensitive to car movements, necessitating rigid suspensions and being prone to losing downforce if the car bottomed out. Due to safety concerns, Formula 1 banned ground effect systems in 1982. Modern Ground Effect Revival In recent years, there has been a resurgence of ground effect principles, with updated designs to mitigate previous drawbacks. Formula 1's 2022 regulations, for instance, brought back ground-effect-inspired designs, reducing reliance on traditional over-body elements like wings and spoilers. The aim is to enhance downforce without the sensitivity issues of older systems. Peugeot's Wingless Design Peugeot's innovative approach with the 9X8 Hypercar in the Le Mans series moves away from traditional wings. Instead, it employs a combination of ground effect and upper rear bodywork. This design incorporates an 'air curtain' to redirect airflow and create downforce. The underfloor is sculpted to optimize aerodynamic performance, showing resilience to pitch and yaw changes. Shark Fin Technology Modern endurance racing uses shark fin technology, a longitudinal wing extending from the cockpit to the car's rear. This component increases cornering stability by enhancing pressure along the car's outer edge, thus reducing oversteer. Additionally, the shark fin improves the rear wing efficiency by guiding airflow efficiently around the cockpit. Downforce and Drag Dynamics The relationship between downforce and drag becomes more pronounced as speed increases. Aerodynamic devices are, therefore, critical, especially at high speeds. For instance, a front wing with 10 pounds of downforce at 40 mph generates around 40 pounds at 80 mph. Precise adjustments in these devices can significantly impact performance. Aerodynamic Devices and Technology Modular Body Panels in NASCAR NASCAR teams have adopted 3D-printed modular body panels to speed up aerodynamic development. For example, in 2023, efforts to refine the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse involved modular wind tunnel models. This approach enables quick changes and real-time data collection, facilitating optimized designs faster than traditional methods. Advanced Simulation Techniques Peugeot Sport's partnership with Dassault Systèmes exemplifies the cutting-edge use of simulation technologies in aerodynamic development. For the 9X8 Hybrid Hypercar, over 10,000 simulations were conducted to assess airflow. These simulations allowed for 80-90% of aerodynamic optimizations to be achieved before physical wind tunnel tests, streamlining the development process. Betting and Aerodynamics The intersection of modern racing technology and fan engagement has opened new avenues in the context of betting. Platforms like Caesars Sportsbook offer fans a dynamic experience by enabling bets on various race aspects, from outcomes to lap times. This integration of betting enriches the spectator experience, providing a layer of real-time engagement. Role of Simulation and Wind Tunnel Testing Teams now use a blend of simulations and wind tunnel testing to refine aerodynamic designs. Le Mans prototype cars, for example, operate under strict lift-to-drag ratio limits of 4.0. Precision is paramount—advanced technologies and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are essential to achieving optimal lift-to-drag ratios, often better than -2:1, or even -3:1 in high-performance racing. Cycling Aerodynamics Beyond motorsports, aerodynamics significantly impact other endurance sports like cycling. In 2017, studies reviewed critical aerodynamic aspects in cycling, revealing the importance of equipment design, rider positioning, and race strategies. The complex interactions and unsteady racing environment make aerodynamics crucial here as well. Regulation and Safety Regulatory bodies maintain stringent measures to ensure safety and fairness in aerodynamic innovations. Moveable aerodynamic devices, for instance, are generally prohibited to prevent giving an unfair advantage. These regulations help maintain a competitive balance while prioritizing safety for all participants. Advanced Materials The use of lighter, stronger composites has marked significant progress in modern aerodynamics. These materials contribute to better performance without adding undesirable weight. The combination of advanced materials and CFD allows teams to fine-tune aerodynamic elements for specific track conditions and regulations. Historical and Comparative Context Aerodynamics has transitioned from an empirical art to a precise science. Early designs that primarily aimed to reduce drag have evolved to prioritize downforce for enhanced handling and stability. This evolution is backed by progress in fluid mechanics, materials science, and computational techniques, driving forward the capabilities of modern endurance racers. Speed and Performance Impact Effective aerodynamic optimization is essential in racing. It enables cars to maintain higher speeds through corners and improves overall lap times. The advancements in ground effect, shark fin technology, and targeted aerodynamic devices continue to redefine the performance boundaries in endurance racing. Future Prospects The ongoing advancements in aerodynamic technology and materials will inevitably influence consumer vehicles. The transition of these high-performance innovations from the track to road-going cars promises enhancements in safety, efficiency, and overall driving experience. As technology progresses, the racing world provides a fertile ground for groundbreaking developments that extend beyond the sport. Conclusion Aerodynamics are reshaping endurance racing by driving performance improvements through innovative design, advanced materials, and cutting-edge technologies. From ground effect principles to modular body panels, the pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency continues to push the limits of speed and stability, all while adhering to safety regulations that ensure a competitive balance. These advancements not only enhance performance on the racetrack but also influence the future of consumer vehicles, promising better efficiency and handling. As aerodynamics evolve, endurance racing will remain a key driver of technological breakthroughs, shaping the future of automotive engineering both on and off the track. Read the full article

NFL season is in the books, and for the first time in US history, legal sportsbooks took action on the games in more than a dozen states across the country.
Oddsmakers told ESPN that Sunday was a “decent day,” as the house came out on top on what was a busy kickoff to the most popular betting season in America. However, some bettors fared quite well in week one.
The most notable win came on a $30,000 wager placed at the PointsBet book in New Jersey. The sports betting operator features a twist on how its NFL gambling works, allowing bettors to win (and lose) 1x their bet per point away from the spread.
In this case, the bettor risked $30,000 on the Ravens spotting the Dolphins six points. The maximum win/loss was set at a whopping $600,000. With Baltimore defeating the lowly Dolphins 59-10, the PointsBet wager was multiplied by 43 for a total haul of $1,290,000. But because the max win/loss was $600,000, the bettor takes home that amount. Not bad for a Sunday.
Week One Wins The Ravens delivered sportsbooks a loss on Sunday, as casinos reported lopsided action on Baltimore. Caesars said 93.7 percent of the money it took on the game was on the favorite.
A Philadelphia fanatic wagered $45,000 at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas on the Eagles beating the Washington Redskins straight up on -450 odds. The bet – which didn’t look good early on, as the Eagles trailed 17-0, net $10,000 after Philly managed to come back and win, 32-27.
DraftKings took a $100,000 mobile wager in New Jersey on the Indianapolis Colts (+6.5) and Jacksonville Jaguars (+3.5). The Colts covered in overtime 30-24, but the Jags failed to cover in their 40-26 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs.
PointsBet offset some of its $600,000 loss after the Buffalo Bills topped the home team New York Jets, 17-16.
Browns Bust The hype surrounding the Cleveland Browns was massive entering the 2019-20 season. Hopes are high for the team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2002.
The hype was short-lived.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota tossed three touchdown passes in his team’s 43-13 rout of the Browns. Cleveland QB Baker Mayfield was picked off three times in the final 15 minutes in what was a dismal opening week showing.
Everybody is going to throw this in the trash,” Mayfield said of the loss. “I think that is good. I know what type of men we have in this locker room.”동행복권파워볼
“Quite frankly, I do not give a damn what happens on the outside. I know how we are going to react. I know what we are going to do. We are going to bounce back. We have a Monday night game coming up, so we do not really care. We are ready to go,” the second-year star said.
The Browns – along with the Chicago Bears – attracted the most Super Bowl action prior to week one at multiple sports books. Both teams began the season with a loss.
