Part 1
And so it begins! This is going to be a fun little Coffee Shop AU where we pass off the next part to another author until we finish it. @intangiblyyourswrites, you’re up next!
The streets of Hateno are welcoming enough, but Zelda feels out of place. In such a rural village, it's easy for residents to pick out who doesn't belong—and a prim looking graduate student from Hyrule University definitely doesn't fit in with the fields and farmers. Her advisor, Dr. Purah, has assured her that the suspicious glances end after the first month, but two weeks in, Zelda's not so sure they will. She pauses to examine herself in the window of the East Wind General Store. Perhaps it's the way she dresses when she's not doing fieldwork? Maybe if she exchanges her peacoat for a hoodie, she'll be a little more inconspicuous…
She shakes away the thought—she has a mission this morning. Purah and Robbie nearly pulled an all-nighter discussing the ancient technology excavation sites the evening prior, and they needed some serious caffeine before they'd be able to go through the plans together this morning. She passes the grain elevator next to the general store and arrives at the cafe Purah recommended—Kochi Coffee Shop. It's not particularly fancy by castle town standards, but by Hateno standards it seems almost classy. She opens the door, and joins the line.
Inside, the walls are a cozy golden shade, and sunlight filters down through the skylights to give the space a summery warmth. There are probably close to fifty plants, some of them hanging down from the ceiling and others nestled on shelves, but all of them well-tended. Some of them even look like herbs—could they be using them in the kitchen?
A strange looking man with an aggressively pink comb-over pushes through the kitchen doors, bringing a steaming breakfast sandwich to a customer waiting at the end of the counter. He appears to be the cafe owner, but she's never seen a more jarring shade of magenta—he can't be from around here, but he seems utterly unfazed by the stares of the patrons. At least Zelda doesn't look as out-of-place as he does. He gives the barista a friendly pat on the shoulder as he returns to the kitchen, and when Zelda's eyes refocus on the young man behind the counter, she suddenly forgets all about the pink hair.
The barista is… normal looking at first glance. But as she looks more closely, she is surprised by the calm way he carries himself despite the chaos of the morning rush. His hands move with smooth precision as he types in an order and plucks a cup from the stack to begin making a drink. When it's completed, she catches a glimpse of his shirt, a snug, soft-looking blue thing that reads, "This is my tea shirt." She huffs a little laugh.
As the line moves along, she gets close enough to notice more of him. He has a little name tag pinned to his shirt that reads "Link," which is a rather unusual name. His hair also is quite long for a country boy - fluffy bangs and loosened locks frame his face, and he has most of it pulled back into a messy ponytail. If this wasn't rural Hyrule, she'd assume he was some kind of hipster.
"Welcome to Kochi Coffee Shop, what can I get you?"
Zelda startles for a moment before remembering what she came for.
"Oh, sorry, let me just…" She pulls out her slate and digs up the message from Purah this morning with their orders. "Okay, I need one large triple-shot mocha with cinnamon and no milk for Purah, and one large blonde roast for Robbie."
"Any cream or sugar with that?"
"Uh…" She double checks the message. "Nope. Black."
He writes the orders on the cups, and even labels them with Purah and Robbie's names. She's immediately impressed by his attention to detail (and by the fact that he spelled both of their names correctly without asking her).
"Alright," he smiles and looks her right in the eyes, "Now that we've got them squared away, is there anything I can get you?"
The teasing tone of his voice catches her off-guard a little. His eyebrows raise when she doesn't answer right away.
"Um, yes, actually," she straightens and continues, "I'd like a large cup of Earl Grey, steeped for three and a half minutes, with just a splash of cream and no sugar. Oh, and make sure the cup is filled to the top, please."
Link has to take a second to wipe the incredulous look off his face before he chuckles, "Sure thing, Miss. Is that three minutes and thirty seconds exactly?"
Is he making fun of her? Two can play at that game.
"Yes, if it's not too hard for you."
This only serves to make him smile more as he punches in her order, and Goddess above, he has dimples. Dimples and a strong jaw and pretty little creases by his eyes—Zelda has to force herself not to stare. She looks pointedly at the bakery display.
"Those little fruitcakes you're glaring at are really good. I finished making them a couple hours ago."
Zelda's jaw drops. "You made them?"
"Yeah, we make everything from scratch here. You should try one."
She stutters as she tries to conjure up some kind of excuse about how she really shouldn't have sweets this early in the morning and she's already running late to the planning meeting, but before she can finish, Link's hand is reaching into the display and pulling out a perfectly decorated little cake.
"Here, you can have this one on the house. I don't add much sugar to them because the fruit is already plenty sweet, but I'll pack it up for you so you can have it with lunch."
Zelda's voice returns to her. "I cannot possibly accept that without paying for it, please just let me—"
He presses a container into her hands.
She pushes it back.
He laughs at her stubbornness, dimples reappearing on his cheeks. He pushes the cake to her again, but this time he snatches her hand from the counter and holds it firm against the container. His touch is warm, but his eyes are warmer.
"Can I get your name, Miss?"
She flushes pink. He seems to realize he's flustered her, and he removes his hand from hers.
"For the order. So I can call you when it's ready."
"Oh. Yes, right." She takes a deep breath. "Zelda."
He plucks a cup from the stack and writes her name.
"Alright Miss Zelda. I'll have that right out for you."
Ten minutes later, Zelda walks away from Kochi Coffee Shop with her tea, cake, and coworkers' coffee in hand. She sips her tea and sighs—it's exactly the way she likes it. As she walks down the road to the lab, she realizes that she left with three more things than she'd intended to get: the tea, the cake, and a strange fluttering feeling in her chest.

Dear Girl ~Stories~ the Movie 3
Tumblr media
Caught the movie the same day it opened in Japanese cinemas! Huge spoilers and movie summary under the cut!
I have never seen the first two DGS Movies but I know it is full of crack and of HiroC bullying OnoD. Boy, I was so right! The movie from start to end was hilarious! Poor, poor OnoD!
The movie opened with HiroC and a sleepy OnoD whispering in their hotel room their theme for this ‘episode’ of DGS - “I did not bring my passport.” HiroC said that they will be going ‘overseas’ for this episode, hence why they are up bright and early to rush to Haneda airport.
Landing at the Kingdom of Kochi
Of course, they did not go overseas at all but travelled to Kochi, in which they have reimagined it as The United Kingdom of Kochi (UKK). OnoD was so peeved about it, and they had to go through a fake immigration where the officer asks them English questions like:
“What is the purpose of your trip zeyo?”
 > HiroC & OnoD: Sightseeing zeyo.
“What is your occupation zeyo?”
> Japanese famous voice actor zeyo!
If they do not use zeyo at the end of their sentence, the officer pretended not to understand them at all haha!
The Kingdom’s Currency
After clearing ‘immigration’, HiroC introduced the UKK currency - zeyo. In which 100-yen is equivalent to 100-zeyo. The cast actually made coins and note for UKK. The 10,000 note had OnoD’s portrait and a moustache on it! It was so hilarious!
First, they decided to stop for a quick bite! Since Kochi City is famous for katsuo (tuna), they visited an eating place and tried katsuo tataki and some fried candied katsuo fries! Both stall vendors kept to the game and pretence of dealing in zetto, instead of Japanese yen! OnoD was screaming in aghast hahaha!
Sightseeing in Kochi City 1: Harimaya Bridge
Tumblr media
They then got changed into the national outfit of the UKK, which is literally a samurai outfit! Then, they went sightseeing!
First, they decided to visit the famous Kochi bridge - Harimaya-bashi, a hilariously tiny, 20-meter red arched bridge. Along the way to the bridge, OnoD was gushing excitedly that this bridge is as famous as America’s Rainbow Bridge and the UK’s London Bridge. But silly OnoD mistakenly called London Bridge ‘Big Ben’ hahahaha!!!
Everyone thought it was going to be a huuuuuuge bridge but no. It was tiny af, even HiroC was wondering how on earth it got famous. They made OnoD do a voice recording for the DGS ringtone (?) download, and it was hilarious! OnoD got super embarrassed!
They also recorded some random bridge-crossing footage for the trailer, which is super funny!
Sightseeing in Kochi City 2: Kochi Castle
The team then visited Kochi Castle in their samurai outfits next! They passed the statue of Itagaki Taisuke, and HiroC joked that Itagaki-san’s raised hand must be representing the length of Kochi’s katsuo! Hahahha!
Tumblr media
They also visited the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, and OnoD pretended to voice-over as Sakamoto while HiroC chatted to the statue.
They posed for pictures with the castle at the backdrop and made OnoD say more cheesy lines! OnoD wanted to visit the castle but HiroC trolled OnoD, saying that he can’t visit the castle because the current King of Kochi lives there. OnoD then asked who are those visitors at the viewing deck then, and HiroC said they are staff serving the King lol. The only way OnoD can enter the castle is if he becomes King. Thus, this gave birth to OnoD’s resolve to be King (now you know why the part 2 poster mentioned about being King zeyo).
Sightseeing in Kochi City 3: Lunch
The cast settled down for lunch, and ordered everything on the menu with katsuo. Two of the cast members only had saba-sushi.
Sightseeing in Kochi City 4: Katsurahama Beach
They went to the beach afterwards and made OnoD shout his promise to be King of Kochi to the sea! It was a short scene but pretty funny! Poor OnoD had to run a lot!
Sightseeing in Kochi City 5: Tosa-token Center
Kochi is also famous for their Tosa fighting dogs! They sat through a short 3-minute dog fight. I think a lot of audience members got visibly uncomfortable seeing the two dogs fight. Even OnoD started tearing up and HiroC looked really uncomfortable watching it. At the end of the fight, HiroC had to hit OnoD roughly on the chest to snap him out of his depression at seeing dogs fight. But they got to see Tosa puppies and they are HUGE!!!!! A puppy shook paws with OnoD, to his delight!
Sightseeing in Kochi City 6: OnoD’s Family Shop & Home
Next, they visited OnoD’s family shop - Ono Furniture Store! HiroC trolled OnoD that MamaD was waiting outside the shop for him, but instead it was a punk-looking lady riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle. OnoD cannot believe that lady is MamaD and she rode off after exchanging some hilarious words with the two.
The cast then entered the shop, and we saw framed pictures of idol-like OnoD on the wall! The cast also decided to purchase some furniture! UchiP decided to buy some furniture for the office and some super tacky indoor slipper stands that is shaped like a Wing Chun martial artist might use to practice fighting (Ace of Asia reference), in which 3 lucky movie viewers get to win! One girl said “But..I don’t need it.” a little too loudly, which made the whole theatre laugh. The cast explored the shop and OnoD kept encouraging them to buy something, especially the huge vase that is on sale (refer to part 2 poster).
Since no one is at the shop, they then decided to pop by OnoD’s home to greet his parents! The scene opened with OnoD looking embarrassed af in his living room haha! MamaD and PapaD had masks on, and us audience members also got a mask as a gift!
Tumblr media
We got to see pictures of OnoD when he was in elementary school (HE WAS SO CUTE OMG), and trophies from his seiyuu career. MamaD shared a bit of all the mementos of her son, and could remember every single picture, autograph and magazine. We can see she is OnoD’s biggest supporter.
While MamaD prepared dinner, HiroC went to OnoD’s childhood bedroom. He then showed us some of his very old anime collection, and suddenly went to dig through his study desk! He found an old cassette player and his first generation gameboy console, which HiroC agreed that it was super nostalgic! Suddenly, OnoD opened the lowest drawer to reveal lots of old academic textbooks and paper, and started digging behind frantically to...PULL OUT A 2005 COPY OF PLAYBOY MAGAZINE!!!!! OH MY GOSH, everyone started clapping in the theatre as HiroC flipped though the magazine while OnoD shared about when he got this magazine (he was 25 years old then) and how he managed to hide it all these while. Thank god the magazine had mosiac over it, but yes - naked women!
After that, they went down and MamaD had made a feast for the cast and crew! She even made OnoD’s favourite tamagoyaki & HiroC’s Hamburg steak. OnoD got emotional as he heard his mom talk about him, and they celebrated his birthday with cake!
As part 1 of the movie wrapped up, OnoD invited HiroC to stay overnight at his house. But...did HiroC stay overnight? We will only find out in part 2 of the movie!
We then got to see teasers of part 2 as well as some funny behind-the-scenes footage during the credits!
It was a really funny movie and my cheeks hurt from laughing and grinning so much! The theatre also sold official movie goods and DGS expo goods as well, but I didn’t get any!
I can’t wait to watch part 2 but I am not sure if I will be able to catch it as I will not be in Japan during the first few days of its release! But, I shall try!

Lockdown treats with leftovers
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/lockdown-treats-with-leftovers-2/
Lockdown treats with leftovers
Tumblr media
By now, most of us know that there are perhaps a hundred ways to bake a cake without flour, eggs, oil, baking powder or an oven. That a chakka (jackfruit) 65 could be as delicious as a standard chicken 65. Ever since the global lockdowns to tackle COVID-19 began, the internet has been teeming with food videos as people learn how to creatively work with basic supplies.
The pandemic is pushing home cooks to examine their larders and backyards more closely, as they find inventive, practical ways to use up everything in the fridge, thus limiting both waste and the necessity for yet another grocery run.
Tumblr media
Paniyarams with leftover idli batter
“Who can possibly have idli three days in a row?,” asks Krishnaraj PS, a software consultant from Kochi, who is giving a new twist to leftover batter with his appakkara (skillet used to make unniappams). He smears it with oil, and pours batter into each mould to get delightful golden paniyarams. “These made for a great lockdown snack,” he says.
Shreya N, a Kochi-based entrepreneur says the lockdown is taking us back several decades, in a positive way. “This is how our grandparents lived. No eating out, growing and cooking our own food. In a way, I would say we are evolving, food-wise,” she says. “It makes me think of ways to create something fancy out of the mundane,” she says. For someone who used to order in every weekend, Shreya has stopped ordering food, owing to safety concerns.
Tumblr media
Black tea mocktail
For those who miss eating out, digital marketing professional Najiya Sheejish from Kollam, has a solution: “You eat with your eyes. As long as it looks good, half the eating is done and it helps cure lockdown blues,” she says. Najiya makes a “mocktail” out of black tea, lemon spritz, a drizzle of honey and a handful of ice cubes. She also makes batter-fried, crisp chicken that resembles and tastes like its retail-chain counterpart.
Businessman Mathew M Joseph has decided to sun dry beef in order to avoid multiple trips to the market. “Especially for those who don’t get it delivered at home, it is ideal,” he says. He cleans the meat thoroughly, salts it and dries it in the sun. “This preserves the meat, which can be powdered and stored. It can be used whenever needed, sautéed with a handful of shallots, grated coconut and chilli powder,” he says. “Sun-drying tomatoes too are a great idea during lockdown,” says Mathew.
Tumblr media
Crispy papaya chips
Balram Menon, businessman and food enthusiast from Kanjiramattom, Ernakulam, made chips out of raw papaya, with a lavish sprinkling of chilli powder and curry leaves. “I upload the videos of my exploits with food on Instagram to inspire others,” he says.
When Aysha Abel from Kollam revived an almost forgotten traditional snack and posted it on Instagram, the video was shared over 2,500 times. The “ethakka ball”, which routinely graced tea-time home menus, has been pushed off tea tables by store bought snacks over the past few decades. The simple and wholesome dish, says Aysha, can be made with the most basic of ingredients — banana, coconut, rice flour, sugar and ghee. “The ingredients are thrown in together, mixed and steamed in a banana leaf,” she says.
Mango leaf green juice
Ingredients:
Mango leaves (tender)
Ginger
Sugar
Lemon
Method:
Wash the leaves thoroughly before grinding them in a mixer along with a piece of ginger. Strain the juice and add lemon juice and sugar. For those who want a spicy version, add a couple of green chillies before grinding the leaves in the mixer with ginger, and add a pinch of salt.
“Traditional snacks don’t need fancy ingredients. Almost all of them can be made with basic home supplies,” says Krishnaraj, whose food videos have a number of viewers. “We are familiar with the aval kuzhachathu (flattened rice with jaggery shavings and coconut peels), but a savoury dish can be made too, if you mix flattened rice with a little bit of water, slit green chillies, a pinch of salt and grated coconut. All you need is tea to go with it,” he says.
Tumblr media
Mango leaf green juice
Of course there are also plenty of experiments that border on the adventurous now that people are spending more time in the kitchen — ice cream made of wheat, green juice made of mango leaves and milkshakes made of jackfruit seeds. “It tastes so much better than it sounds,” says Shanti MS, a home-maker, who tried these with “great results”.
Making the most of resources and minimising wastage is one of the takeaways from COVID-19, as a women’s FaceBook group says. The discussions of late have been around ingenious ways of cooking with whatever is available.
