Monday

November 9th, a humble narrator was once behind the wheel of the car, and after running a few move related errands, I had a couple of hours to kill. There’s a whole outer ring of seldom visited Newtown Creek views which are now in reach. While pulling into Mount Olivette Cemetery in Maspeth, a chance meeting occurred and I ran into an old friend – Tony Nunziato.…

Calvary Cemetery & Mausoleum, 4201 Whittier Blvd, Los Angeles (East LA), CA 90023
Calvary Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery in East LA that was founded in 1896. It looks similar to Evergreen Cemetery but slightly better maintained. There are a few mausoleums. The main mausoleum has four levels, a chapel, stained glass windows; it’s beautiful.
The landscape is mostly flat with a road that winds around the cemetery. There are a few large crypts and lots of statues of angels, crosses, and other Catholic figures. I noticed some of the headstones that looked like they used to be upright were placed in the ground. The grass is very dry and there are a variety of trees (but little shade). The cemetery is surrounded by houses.
Famous inhabitants include Lionel Barrymore, Jelly Roll Morton, Lou Costello, and Irene Dunne. Most of the inhabitants are Latino/Chicano.
3 out of 5 stars.

He performed some of the biggest musical…
