We use the before the names of rivers.

i'm going on uni exchange to france this august to december - does anyone have any suggestions for where i should go while there?

i'll be near paris so anywhere that's easy to get from there (and cheap too haha). i like history/museums and also natural attractions, i'm a trail runner so hikes, national park recommendations etc. would be awesome. i'd also love some more 'off the beaten path' recommendations but also want to cross off a lot of the big sights too (i've been to the colosseum, st peter's basilica, ponte vichio, galleria dell'accademia, berlin wall/east side gallery, buckingham palace, big ben, umm those are the only ones i can think of off the top of my head lol). i'm not interested in skiing/snowboarding and i'm coeliac so most foodie experiences are off the table unfortunately.

i really want to see more of france (have been to paris before and done some of the 'big sights' like the eiffel tower, arc de triomphe, galerie lafeyette, the louvre etc., basically most of the typical paris sights), a goal of mine is to see all the capitals (if that's the right word) of every french state (province?).

i speak german and am really keen to get back to germany so any recommendations there would be great too.

i've been to berlin, munich, frankfurt (only really the airport though lol), leipzig, hannover, dresden, rome, florence, venice, verona, vienna, salzburg (hardly saw as i just got out of hospital the day before we got there lmao i spent the whole time we were there in bed so would defo love to get back here, liked the tiny bit of it i saw), paris, reims, amsterdam, london, cambridge, budapest -- am pretty keen to get back to these places but also want to see new cities/countries too. i'm australian so unless i move to europe i'll have never have an opportunity like this again too, am pretty keen to see places like andorra, luxembourg, czechia etc. really just anywhere i can get to.

They later visited Abergavenny Market and Hwb Torfaen in Blaenavon. Subsequently William and Catherine planted a tree for The Queen's Green Canopy at Blaenavon World Heritage Centre.

2 March - William held a Meeting for the Earthshot Prize.

8 March - He received Mr. Alastair Martin (Secretary of the Duchy of Cornwall).

9 March - William and Catherine received the Lord Hague of Richmond (Chairman). Later in the afternoon they visited the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London where they were recieved by the Ambassador of Ukraine (His Excellency Mr. Vadym Prystaiko).

11 March - William received received the High Commissioners of Belize, Jamaica and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas (Her Excellency Mrs. Therese Rath, His Excellency Mr. Seth George Ramocan, His Excellency Mr. Ellison Greenslade) at Kensington Palace.

14 March - William and Catherine attended the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey. William later appeared in a video segment during the BAFTA Film Awards.

21 March - They visited Caracol Natural Monument Reservation and attended a training session of the British Army Training Support Unit Belize (BATSUB) in the Chiquibul Forest. Afterwards William held an Investiture at the San Ignacio Hotel. The Duke and Duchess attended a Reception to mark The Queen's Platinum Jubilee at Cahal Pech ruins where they were received by the Governor-General of Belize (Her Excellency Ms. Froyla Tzalam).

22 March - William and Catherine released photographs and videos of them scuba diving over the Belize Barrier Reef before departing Belize. They arrived in Jamaica for the next leg of their tour and were received by the British High Commissioner to Jamaica (Her Excellency Ms. Judith Slater) and Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith (Representative of the Prime Minister of Jamaica) at Kingston Norman Manley International Airport upon arrival. Afterwards they met Governor-General of Jamaica and Lady Allen at King's House and attended a Sports and Cultural Event at Trench Town Culture Yard.

23 March - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met the Hon. Andrew Holness MP (Prime Minister of Jamaica) at 1 Devon Road, Kingston. Afterwards they visited Shortwood Teachers' College and Spanish Town Hospital. Subsequently, Willliam and Catherine visited the Caribbean Military Technical Training Institute before attending a Reception Dinner to mark the Platinum Jubilee hosted by the Governor-General of Jamaica (the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen) at King's House.

24 March - William and Catherine attended the Commissioning Parade for the inaugural Initial Officer Training Programme at the Caribbean Military Academy before departing Norman Manley International Airport for the Bahamas where upon arrival at Lynden Pindling International Airport in Belize City they were recieved by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas (Sir Cornelius Smith). Afterwards The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met the Rt. Hon. Philip Davis, MP (Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas) and Mrs. Davis at Sir Cecil Wallace Whitfield Centre in Nassau.

25 March - William and Catherine visited Sybil Strachan School and attended a Celebration for key workers for their work during the pandemic, at the Garden of Remembrance. They subsequently visited Parliament Square and took part in a Platinum Jubilee Sailing Regatta at Montagu Beach in the afternoon. Afterwards they attended a Reception at the Baha Mar Hotel hosted by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas (Sir Cornelius Smith) to mark The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

26 March - On their final day while on tour of the Caribbean, William and Catherine visited Daystar Church in Abaco. Afterwards they unveiled a Memorial at Memorial Garden, Abaco to commemorate those who lost their lives in Hurricane Dorian before visiting a beach area in Abaco to meet local stall holders. William and Catherine then visited Grand Bahama Children's Home and Coral Vita (Winners, 2021 Earthshot Prize to Preserve our Oceans) in Grand Bahamas for their final two stops on their tour. In the evening they departed Lynden Pindling International Airport for the United Kingdom in the evening.

27 March - William and Catherine arrived at the Royal Air Force Brize Norton from the Bahamas after wrapping up their Caribbean tour.

29 March - William attended the Service of Thanksgiving for The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh at Westminster Abbey along with Catherine and their eldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Can I just talk about how awesome the Stanstead airport is from a railway perspective is. Like it isn't amongst the best served or best connected or anything but considering its size and location, it just tries so well.

It has trains at least every half an hour, if not every 15 minutes at certain times while the Gatwick Express is less frequent. It also has connections to other actual major UK cities, where Gatwick just goes to London and Brighton and Heathrow has no train service West so it is stuck with London while from Stansted you can get to Norwich, Peterborough, Cambridge, Leicester and Birmingham on top of London itself. (before you say anything, I know you can get from Reading and Guildford to Gatwick but like does anyone actually like that service, plus those places are in the small leagues compared to Brighton).

Considering that Stanstead is so much smaller than both Gatwick and Heathrow I would say it has an excellent service.

Our last venture out of Cambridge was to the market and cathedral town of Bury St. Edmunds, just a forty minute train ride away.  It is famous for its cathedral, gardens. and the ruins of the ancient abbey.  It was also on the way to our afternoon destination, the archeological site and open-air museum, the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village.  

After what was our last English Breakfast (Alas, no more mushrooms, tomatoes, and baked beans will be offered to us until perhaps next year), we boarded the train to Bury, the name the locals call their city.  A short walk from the train station got us to the center of the old town, a delightful pedestrian area with lots of restaurants, shops, bakeries, and a few pubs.  The town was founded in 1080, but the site upon which it was built was home to the Romans as well as neolithic communities going back many thousands of years.  It is named for Edmund, King of the East Angles, called Edmund the Martyr, who was killed by the Vikings in 869.  He became venerated as a saint and his shrine in Bury St. Edmunds became an important place of pilgrimage.  The word Bury in the name refers to the ear;ier form of the word “borough” and not the fact that Edmund is buried there.  Its formal name was St. Edmundsbury.

We made our way to the cathedral, which, sorry to say, a bit tame, after having visited the majesty of the Cathedral at Ely.  But, the surrounding gardens were gorgeous, a beautiful place to enjoy the peacefulness of a sunny day in the U.K.  What was special, however, were the ruins of the old abbey. We basically had the place to ourselves as we wandered around what had once been one of the richest Benedictine monasteries in England.  When Henry VIII closed the abbey in 1539, it was systematically demolished to demonstrate the king’s power and control.  The site was allowed to become a quarry for local building stone.  Not a whole lot is left, but it has a beauty and power all its own.  

The town is associated with the Magna Carta.  In 1214, the barons of England met in the abbey church swore to force King John to accept the Charter of Liberties, the document which eventually became the Magna Carta of 1215.  

We all found a delightful little restaurant for lunch where they served tasty sandwiches, soups, amd salads on their outdoor patio.

To get to the Anglo-Saxon village, we inquired about bus service to the site, about twenty minutes away.  The bus situation ended up being a bust, so we decided to take a cab.  We were in luck as a van/taxi appeared serendipitously, whisking our group to West Stow.  Our driver, Hussain, was a delight (I was sitting up front, and he gave me his life story on the way there), and he agreed to pick us up and drive us back to the train station in a couple of hours.  Much cheaper than taking two cabs.

It seems that back in the mid seventies, a group of archaeologists and archaeology students decided to recreate this Anglo Saxon village using only the tools that would have been available to the residents during the 5th and 6th centuries.  Interest in the site began in 1849 when a nearby Anglo-Saxon cemetery was discovered along with a plethora of tools, pottery, kilns, and skeletons.  The building of the village started in 1974 and in 1999, it was opened to the public with a visitor center, museum, and cafe.  

They have done a fine job of bringing to visitors a sense of what life must have been like in these olden times.  Once again, for someone as interested in history as our group (mostly former teachers), it was pretty darned good.  

Our last dinner in Cambridge was at a local BBQ joint, a stone’s throw from our hotel.  We packed it in early, as most of us had early wake-up calls for our trains to London, and then from there to Heathrow Airport (Shirley and Chuck had to rise at 4:30 to make their connection).

As I have said before, this was our 5th walk in Great Britain.  Each walk has had its own character.  The terrain on some more easy than that on the others.  Some mostly rural.  Some a little more urban.  But what they all have is the delight of seeing the world at a slow pace.  Two to three miles an hour is a lovely way to enjoy this planet, especially with a group of friends.  I can’t wait to do it again.
