Mandatory Film Blog - Session 5, Exercise 2.

Hello Film Chat, this is Dylan.

This is our short film 'Eden' which aims to document a space within eight shots.

Within this project, I worked on the sound design and soundtrack.

It seems as if something like this would've taken maybe an hour to film tops. But, as per the purpose of the exercise, we spend an invaluable long amount of time studying and exploring the Cammo Estate area. Only through this lengthy exploration did we manage to find the perfect framing and shots.

It's also a lot of fun getting natural sound, nothing beats running up a hill just to capture the sound of some fleeing birds.

Doing the soundtrack as well was great fun. Stayed inside for a day straight going Frankenstein mad. I think the use of acoustic instruments as well adds to a creepy yet ethereal atmosphere.

I sat and ate my lunch like Kermit. Very fun to just observe.

Visual Exercise 2- Documenting a Space

For this exercise, we chose to shoot at Cammo Estate, a local nature reserve.

Sunlight softly filters through the branches as the breeze playfully rustles leaves and twigs. The forest itself is alive.

The dilapidated ruins of buildings beckon, engulfed by trees and bushes. The chaos of the natural elements have overpowered man-made order, evoking themes of time and history. The tower looms in the distance, ominously watching over. The location has a nostalgic quality, reminding of a time long gone by and forgotten.

Our shots were sequenced to portray a physical journey out of the abandoned building, across the field and to the lone tower. The images of nature and man-made buildings heavily juxtapose each other. This symbolises the conflict between the natural and industrial world; a never-ending cycle.

The final shot looks back upon the complete physical journey made, creating a reflective atmosphere. A tree imposes on the right of the frame, distracting from the tower, reminding us of the unrelenting power of nature and the passage of time.

Visual Exercise 2

Cammo estate has a very melancholic feel to it. The abandoned buildings are a sad sight as they are very pretty. The tower stood alone in the middle of a field adds to the sense of abandonment. It’s been turning evening and the sun has been setting since we got here and the approaching darkness helped contribute to this feeling. 

The temperature was cold with a sharp biting wind that went down to your bones. 

Still, through all these negative feelings, it was beautiful. These buildings, claimed by nature. Turned into a public woodland with squirrels running up trees, birds in the sky, and people with dogs playing and running along the paths with an eagerness to greet us. The stables once for containing horses now have nature bursting out of it like how horses would once burst out of it's gates.

Reflection after the finished film -

I like the way this 8 shot film turned out. I think our film does a good job of capturing the abandoned essence of the location. It feels very lonely with shots of the buildings and explores the location effectively. Wide shots of the tower help with the feeling of loneliness as it stands in the field.
