Blog #2 - Nothing left for me to do but plants
Great! We made it to blog #2! I made the pictures last saturday but didn't have time/didn't feel like making the post the day and the day after. I'm just happy I'm actually starting this right now. I'm still trying to create a good format for this, so I will probably experiment with this until I find something I'm satisfied with that doesn't take too much time to do. Pictures are also something I didn't think about. I want to have pictures of the plants from the same angle so you can actually see the progress they make, but that's actually very hard to do. Then there's also the lighting that keeps changing. I'll try to be more careful when making pictures from now on, to try to make them more consisted. Anyway, here's the update for week 2(?):
Name: Trachella Species: Trachelospermum Planted on: Match 8th 2024
Last time(March 8th 2024):
Tumblr media
Now(March 16th 2024):
Tumblr media
Not a lot to report on with her. She does look kind of yellow in the picture, but that's just because it was a very sunny day when I took the picture. While her growth isn't very noticeable in these pictures, I think it's better like this. She'll grow quite a bit this year and her progress will eventually become more visible in contrast
______________________________________________________________
Name: Cynthia Species: Hydrangea macrophylla Planted on: June 4th 2023
Last time(March 8th 2024):
Tumblr media
Now(March 16th 2024):
Tumblr media
Cynthia is still doing great. Her leafs are growing back extremely fast! I trimmed the twigs that didn't look very good while being carefull to not cut the ones that started to grow leaves. I read that that stimulates growth.
I did find some white mold on the dirt around her while checking the soil:
Tumblr media
I did kind of panic at first and stated to remove it. I eventually did some research, and it seems to be saprophytic fungi. These fungi are responsible for digesting dead plant matter and create nutrients for the soil. This does let me to believe that the dirt is quite healthy in the planter. Or at least, I hope so.
______________________________________________________________
Name: Cammy Species: Campanula Portenschlagiana Planted on: June 4th 2023
Last time(March 8th 2024):
Tumblr media
Now(March 16th 2024):
Tumblr media
Not much has chanced since last time. She should eventually grow some flowers, but I think it's just not the right temperature yet. We'll see eventually.
______________________________________________________________
Name: Victor Species: Vinca minor "Alba" Planted on: Match 8th 2024
Last time(March 8th 2024):
Tumblr media
Now(March 16th 2024):
Tumblr media
Victor is doing better than I hoped! Even more of his flowers have started blooming and he seems to take well to the new pot. My hope is that the twigs will get very long and hang down from the planter. It'll look great!
______________________________________________________________
Tumblr media
Name: Sam Species: Lavandula munstead Planted on: Match 8th 2024
Sam is the new plant I was talking about last week. I had to buy a new planter because the one I already had was broken from the bottom. I don't know why I didn't buy a lavender earlier because I really love the smell of them. I really hope they'll take well here!
_____________________________________________________________
And than's the update of last week, just a day late. I think I'm also going to post about some random stuff related to my gardening "experience". It's in quotes because I don't want it to sound any bigger than it is. I'm done with this post now so i'll just conclude it here.
So, see you next week!

Things seen on my postbox bagging walk yesterday morning (which I went out very early for so that I could be finished before it got really hot).
Tumblr media
Tuxedo cat and his shadow.
Tumblr media
A very worn milestone which reads LII (72) Miles From London III (3) Miles To Oxford.
Tumblr media
Wall bellflower (Campanula Portenschlagiana) seen against a brick wall.
Tumblr media
Common Mallow (Malva sylvestris) seen against a metal fence.
Tumblr media
Purple Toadflax seen growing through a metal gate. Note the bee on the bloom on the right hand side of the photo!
Tumblr media
Scotch Bluebells seen against a boundary fence.
Tumblr media
Foxgloves growing wild against a wooden fence.
Tumblr media
Mountain Bluet growing wild.
Tumblr media
Wild Daisies, Thistles, and Wild Barley. This is from a street where there were lots of patches of grass and wild flowers between the pavement and houses and road which had all been deliberately left - many with little signs in them asking for them not to be mown - so that pollinators have something to feed on and there was a wide variety of flowers growing wild among the long grasses. It was a heartening sight.
Tumblr media
A sign with a Hedgehog inside a red triangle and below it a rectangular sign which reads SLOW Hedgehogs Please drive carefully Thank you. This was also a heartening sign as I know that Hedgehog numbers are severely depleted in this country.
Tumblr media
A rather battered wooden gate post that reminded me of the Rook chess piece.
One thing I picked up - there are an awful lot of purple flowering plants around at the moment!

How to Grow Campanulas in Your Garden?
Tumblr media
These beautiful, bell-shaped flowers make an excellent addition to your flower borders. They will flower throughout the warm summer months, giving you a sheer amount of colour. These plants will come in cool shades of blue and white, sometimes in warm pinks.
They come in various shapes and forms, which makes the campanula suitable for most areas in the garden. Low-growing ones are great for pots and rockeries, with bells hanging over walls and edges. The taller ones will look great on the border. Campanulas area is great at growing and propagating, mostly resistant to pests and diseases, except for snails and slugs. The wide varieties of campanulas are perennials and do well in the UK. They will return next year and give your garden a flowery look yearly.
Here are Some Ways on  How to Grow Campanulas in Your Garden
Campanula Care Tips
Campanulas are tolerant of most soils and easy to grow and care for. They’re not susceptible to diseases, tough and hardy enough to give you plenty of flowers for many years. Some of the varieties may even seed themselves around the garden.
Light Requirements
Most varieties will prefer a sunny, warm place. The wall bellflower, Campanula portenschlagiana, will do well with a bit of shade.
Water Requirements
Once the plants are established, campanula is relatively resistant to drought. However, to get the best out of the plants, you should water them regularly when they’re growing. It’s important not to let them dry when they’re flowering. Otherwise, you’ll lose the blooms. Reduce watering when the plants aren’t growing actively. They don’t like sitting in wet soil, so water them deeply once they start drying out instead of watering them regularly.
Soil Requirements
Campanula does quite well in most kinds of soil, even when alkaline or acidic. They do best in light, free-draining and moist soil.
Fertiliser Requirements
You should avoid fertilising too much as that may lead to sappy growth vulnerable to snail and slug infestations. Look for a fertiliser higher in phosphorus than nitrogen, which will help with flowering. You may also apply a boine meal as this is a natural source of phosphorus. Container-growing plants will also need liquid fertiliser regularly in their growing season.
Planting
It would be best if you spaced out your campanula around 40-45 centimetres apart unless you’re planting in containers where they may be packed closely. Plant the campanula, so the crown is around 2.5 centimetres below soil level. Mulch it slightly to suppress weeds and help the plant retain moisture. The taller varieties may need light support to grow. If you’re planting them in a container, use loam-based compost with some added grit for better drainage. Include some water retention crystals if you want to help them stay moist in days of drought.
Maintenance
Bellflowers may require little maintenance, but deadheading will help promote better flowering. It’s only necessary to do this for self-seeding varieties, as you don’t want them spreading and dominating your garden.
Repotting
Choose a pot larger than the existing one, using loam-based compost with a grit added in. The plant will need repotting once the roots fill the pot. If the plant doesn’t need repotting, you should remove the top layer of compost every year and replace it with fresh one to add more nutrients.
Pruning Advice
Pruning campanula isn’t something you need to do, necessarily. It would be best to deadhead it regularly, pinching flowering tips to encourage new blooms. You should also remove any damaged or diseased growth. Trim the plant back if you want to keep it in shape.

Blog #1 - Lose yourself to plants
This post will just be an introduction to the plants I have right now. I want this blog to be like a journal where I make weekly updates on the state of my plants and what's happening to them. Posts after this will most likely be way shorter, just including pictures and notes on the plants.
This year I decided to start a bit early. The weather has been great the past few weeks and it bring me in a great mood to start working on the balcony again. The store I usually buy plants from doesn't sell outside plants anymore so I had to find a new place to buy them. I did find an amazing replacement for that previous store. I'd say they're way better that the previous one. It's like half an hour by bike but it's worth it's totally worth it.
Anyway, introducing our plants of this year:
Tumblr media
Name: Trachella Species: Trachelospermum Planted on: Match 8th 2024
Since I have a trellis I wanted another climbing plant for it. I chose her because she only needs partial sun, doesn't get too big and also because she can't handle temperatures under -10 'C so she probably won't survive the winter. I'm not sure yet if it's a good idea for me to have to potentially huge plant on my balcony that I might have to remove when it gets too big, so I'm still playing it save for now. I just hope she'll look great on that trellis!
________________________________________________________
Tumblr media
Name: Cynthia Species: Hydrangea macrophylla Planted on: June 4th 2023
Hydrangea macrophylla are very hardy plants. Cynthia here has survived the whole winter without needing any tending to. She's the successor of another Hydrangea I had. They were the only casualty in the battle against the neighbor's cat, which I creatively called "Balcony cat", who was ravaging our once peaceful garden for months. It was their second year here but they died before the battle against Balcony Cat was resolved. Cynthia is already doing a great job following up her predecessor and I hope she'll continue to do great this year!
She might look a bit awkward with that empty space next to her, but that's because her previous plant-mate was a single-year plant. I still need to find a new plant to keep her company, but I want it to be another single year plant. I want Cynthia to grow as big as possible, so there might eventually not be enough room for two plants in the planter. I just want to be ready for that.
______________________________________________________________
Tumblr media
Name: Cammy Species: Campanula Portenschlagiana Planted on: June 4th 2023
Cammy is the second plant returning from last year. Plants like her are usually found on mountains growing between the rocks, so it's no surprise she survived the winter easily. She has a lot of space because I hope she'll grow into it and we'll have a nice patch filling the entire planter.
There's not much history to tell on her because she's always just vibing in the background. Minding her business and doing just fine.

Tumblr media
Name: Victor Species: Vinca minor "Alba" Planted on: Match 8th 2024
I picked Victor because I thought he'd look really good in the planter on the drainpipe. I think he'd look beautiful with the stems hanging from the side. But two years in a row now, every plant on the drainpipe gotten infested with aphids. I don't know if I've just gotten unlucky and an aphid just happens to get blown onto my plants or that I bought plants with aphids on them. Either way, I hope just hope that I won't have to deal with them this year and that Victor will be spared from the aphid curse.
____________________________________________________________
There's still a plant that I haven't introduced yet, but that's because I haven't planted it yet. I'll probably introduce it next update since I don't want to postpone posting this post any longer than it needs to be. I don't want to fall into the same trap I did last year.
So, see you next week!
