Every once in a while, a company comes along that has that understanding, and it’s usually because the founders themselves are from the proverbial “flyover country” of America. Today, we’ll talk about one such company that started with a single type of niche product - hunting cameras - and how their understanding of what their target demographic wants leading to a 99x traffic growth over 4 years for camera manufacturer Tactacam.

One type of product can be enough.

One might look at Tactacam and wonder how a company that really only offers one product - cameras built for outdoor enthusiasts - could achieve a 99x growth rate in traffic and massive business success.

The Storm

Rain has been forecast every day this week. Most days it has been overcast with drizzle from time to time, but nothing oppressive. Today, heavy wind and rain has been forecast all day. It is unlikely we will get in much hiking, so we decide to be tourists and go sightseeing up the coast.

Margaret's tent is bending ominously in the wind. Gusts are expected to approach 50 MPH later today. Since we are not going to be around to look after it, we have a quick breakfast and strike Margaret's drenched tent and stow it in the RV for safekeeping. Then we drive out of the campground and head north on the Cabot Trail into the storm.

The east wind has been driving waves across the Atlantic all night, sending them crashing against the eastern shore of the island. There are turnouts all along the right side of the Cabot Trail. We avail ourselves of each one in turn. The waves are fantastic and ferocious.

We hike out to the end of the trail off Green Cove. We struggle to stand against the wind. Bits of sea foam fly up from the waves and smack us in the face. Dora prefers the comfort of the camper to being in the elements and questions our sanity when we invite her outside.

Soon we put the camper in 4WD and depart the Cabot Trail for the paved and unpaved back roads of northern Cape Breton

We see cormorants diving for breakfast, gulls hunched against the wind, seals bobbing in the surf, gannets skimming the water looking for fish.

The last time Tim and Jeanne were here, we stayed at Hideaway Campground which serves seafood in their one-table restaurant. The sign out front says Camp Office and Oyster Bar. They are out of oysters, but have plenty of snow crab legs. We buy enough for two sandwiches worth and head into Dingwall.

Dingwall's North Harbor Beach is a coarse red sand beach with piles of red stone forming the harbor seawall. We park on the sand with the windshield facing the crashing waves. After some brief exploration, we adjourn to the kitchen to shell crab legs until we have a bowl heaped with tender crabmeat and mouths watering for a taste. A touch of mayonnaise, a few leaves of lettuce and we have sandwiches fit for royalty. What a treat!

After lunch, Margaret went gannet watching. Looking back at the entrance to the harbor, she noticed a tidal bore making it's way into the harbor. She rushed back to the camper, alerting Tim. Our very own tidal bore, Moncton or no Moncton.

Margaret has been searching for months to find a true source of sweet grass which is used by indigenous peoples in the Northeast. She found a huge field of it full of the Tell-Tale sweet smell and purple root. Delight and joy ensued.

We left the beach and headed north, making it all the way to St. Margaret Village, on the northern tip of Cape Breton Island. No land north of us until Newfoundland. The water here is sheltered from the east wind by the island, and the waves minimal, even though the wind is still strong.

After a walk on the concrete wharf, we turn south back toward our campsite. The drive goes quickly, with the discussion centered on whether the wind will have died down enough to set Margaret's tent back up again by the time we have arrived, or if we will have to wait. We arrive back at camp to driving rain and gusting winds.

While waiting for the rain to abate we take a walk and Margaret tries her newfound knowledge of spruce trees, from a field guide she bought at park headquarters, to identify white vs red vs black spruce. It's debatable if she is successful but boy do they smell nice!

At a break in the rain, all three humans work quickly to raise the tent, adjusting the stays and hammering in stakes before the tent blows away. Dinner and bed as the wind dies down and everyone has a peaceful sleep.

How To Plan A Car Camping Trip

First off, when I say ‘car camping’ I mean any camping trip where you’re driving a vehicle up to a campsite. You can pitch a tent, stay in an RV, or sleep in your car.

This is not a blog post about planning a backpacking trip where you hike to a destination to camp.

Step 1: Figure Out Where You Want To Go

Obviously, the first thing you need to do is narrow down where you want to camp.

For example, let’s say you live on the east coast and you want to plan a camping trip out west. Where ‘out west’ do you want to go?

Perhaps you decided that you want to visit Utah. (I live here and highly recommend it!)

Now, Utah is a pretty big state with a lot to see and do. In order to help narrow things down, you can look at blog posts and maps to get a sense of what’s available.

In our example, you’ll find that Utah has 5 national parks. After looking at maps, blog posts, and photos, you decide that you want to plan a camping trip out to Utah to see Arches National Park!

Step 2: Camping Options And Reservations

Now it’s time to look into camping options in the area that you want to go to.

I like to start with a quick internet search. For example, I search something like ‘camping options near Arches National Park’.

You’ll likely find lots of campgrounds in your search.

Campgrounds vs Dispersed Camping

There’s a big difference between dispersed camping and campground camping:

Dispersed camping is when you camp on public lands (national forest or BLM land), usually away from any facilitates. Dispersed campsites are usually just a patch of dirt and no reservations are available.

On the other hand, campgrounds are more developed and they tend to have things like fire pits, trash cans, and tent platforms, but you might need reservations way in advance.

If you’re a new camper, I recommend staying at a campground. You can find tons more details about dispersed camping vs campgrounds in my blog post on how to find great campsites.

In our example, there’s a campsite in Arches National Park, and you decide that’s where you want to camp!

Now it's time to secure permits, if necessary, for the place you want to camp.

How far in advance should you plan?

Some campgrounds are first-come, first-serve, others are reservation only, and others are a combination of both.

Sometimes, you might need to make reservations months in advance.

If you have specific dates and a specific place that you want to go camping, then I recommend looking into reservations months in advance.

Step 3: Other Activities Nearby

Another thing to think about in advance is some of the activities that you might want to do on your trip.

Sometimes it’s nice to go on a camping trip and just relax at camp all day. I certainly love those trips, but other times I like to go on day hikes, fish, or swim.

Do you need any advanced permits or guides for the activities that you might want to do?

Step 4: Packing And Gear Prep

Now I want to move on to some of the things to be preparing for as your trip gets closer.

What is the weather going to be like for your trip?

This will help you determine what and how many camping clothes to pack.

Keep in mind that the elevation will definitely affect the temperature!

Do you have all the appropriate gear for your trip?

Take inventory of what camping gear you're going to need and make sure everything actually works.

If you’re camping for the first time, make sure you set up your brand new gear at home and take the time to figure out how it all works before your trip!

If it's been a while since you camped, make sure all the gear in storage is functional and replace or fix things before your trip.

Step 5: Meal Planning

Now we’re on to my favorite topic! If you’ve seen my YouTube channel, you know how much I love camp cooking.

One thing that makes things so much easier at camp is to simply plan out your meals at home.

This doesn’t need to be some ridged elaborate plan. Instead, simply write down what you want to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day of the camping trip.

The more prepared you are, the better you’ll be able to adapt if things don’t go to plan.

It’s so peaceful, after the last week, it almost doesn’t feel real. Ren grabs a stack of chairs sitting beside the camper and drags them to the firepit. Etho follows and sits down.

“So. We have a game plan?” Ren asks, using his flint and steel to light the campfire.

Doc settles into his own chair and kicks his feet up on the edge of the firepit, rocking his chair back on two legs. “Etho, is EX going after any other hermits?”

“He mentioned Iskall and the ‘newbies’ specifically, but, like I said...I think I scared him off any schemes for a while.”

Ren’s ears are still pinned back. “Yeah, but for how long?”

Etho shrugs.

“So. We wait. We listen. We watch.” Doc taps the metal plate below his cybernetic eye. “We make sure Gem and Pearl and everyone else are okay. And we prepare. Make sure we’re ready to act as soon as we figure out his scheme.”

“Yeah, sounds great,” Ren mutters.

Etho sips from his coffee again. He knows Doc is right. They have no way of knowing how to counteract a plan they know nothing about. And with EX controlling Xisuma...there was the added risk of Xisuma’s admin status. They would have to go about this very, very carefully.

Doc passes Ren a mug, then holds up his own. “I predict this stuff right here is gonna be the most valuable thing on the server before this is over.”

Ren laughs, throwing his head back, and Etho grins. It feels good. They need that moment to reduce the tension buzzing in the air. It will come back, he knows--but for now, knowing he has friends to help him, this feels doable.

They can watch, they can wait...and they can strike when the time is right.

seulrene detective unit 🕵️‍♀️ i think i don’t have the energy to entertain the thought they could be real but one thing that never fails to crack me up, is the difference between seulrene on-cam vs seulrene off-cam (that we saw/heard about so not really off-cam but at least that’s what they thought lol), like the time around rbb era when seulgi just back hugged her for like a minute and irene didn’t even flinch vs irene screaming and cringing when seulgi was supposed to do it in a program like a month later 😭 the thing that made them unnecessarily suspicious was the whole “the other one is lava” and jumping away from each other when they realized/remembered they’re watched, acting like those aren’t normal things friends do and we know THEY do 😭 though i think that era is finally over and they don’t limit their public affection as much at they, for whatever reason, did

you're so right about the first hugging thing, why are they inseparable off camera but when they know a camera is filming them they freak out when one of them touches the other lol. i don't wanna be that person that examines every little thing they do but their dynamic is very different on and off camera and i don't know why but i think it's sweet and genuine how their relationship works. <3 however i disagree that the no skinship era is over. i feel like even despite the monster era, they still weren't nearly as clingy as they are from when they think they're off camera. there's always stories from kfans how they saw seulrene hugging or touching each other during music show rehearsals or seulrene going on beach dates alone during night on valentine's day and etc but then during monster era they couldn't spoon or even at least sleep right beside each other on the beds of the rv camper </3 honestly seulrene off camera just seems like 2 completely different people than seulrene on camera LOL
