Introduction:

Have you ever wanted to start a clothing brand, or create a clothing collection? Pierce Marengo is the designer of LEMON, a clothing brand and community based on nature, going outside, and not being defined by flaws. In this speech, Pierce shares the 10 steps he used to design his clothing collection, CAMP LEMON.

10 Steps to Designing a Clothing Collection:

1. Inspiration / Ideas

What makes you want to create? What do you want to create?

2. Sketching

Sketch out all the ideas of what you want in the collection, and the packaging.

3. Final Designs

The files that you make in a graphic design software that will be used to create the product.

4. Digital Mockups

Use the final designs to create what you want the physical product to look like.

5. Sampling

Make or purchase samples for you to figure out which one you like the feel, the look, and the textures. Figure out which one you want to wear everyday, and choose a favorite.

6. Mood Boards

Create a representation of the vibe of the collection to show your team when you create film or photography.

7. Physical Mock Ups

This is where you figure out how to make the clothes. There's many ways to do this, through embroidery, screen printing, stencils, etc. This could also be through companies that create the pieces for you, going back and forth until you're satisfied with their physical mock ups.

8. Testing

Wear it multiple times, wash it multiple times, see how it looks in person, in camera, on film. Make any adjustments to the process of making it.

9. Manufacturing

Even if you're making it by yourself, it's still a process. This is when the sketches come to life. Use the process from the physical mock up for the whole collection. If you use fabric paint or fabric markers, slide the shirt over a piece of cardboard so that the paints or markers don't go through onto the back of the shirt. You can create stencils by using stencil materials (or even thick paper, although it's harder to wash) to make stencils using a guide of a printed version of your final designs on paper. When you make the stencils, you can't have a hole within a hole, which means no O's or P's, so instead use bridges—this is the same thing you might have seen for the stencils for road painting. If you use stencils, use cardboard overtop so that the fabric spray doesn't get onto undesired areas of the shirt. Afterwards, fill in the gaps made by the bridges with a fabric marker or fabric paint and a paintbrush, unless you want to keep the gaps as part of the design.

Also, packaging. Figure out the process to make it, just like you did with the physical mock ups. This could be using stencils as well, if you want, or even just drawing things with fabric markers, or using stamps. Figure out what sort of things you care about, like if it is 100% recyclable or made from 100% recyclable materials. Figure out what you want to do for presentation, folding (or rolling), and tags.

10. Look Book

Create your Mood Board with the physical product. Emphasize certain things. It could be photos, videos, multiple photos and videos, or a collage. It could be just the product, or people wearing the product, or anything. Be creative and have fun.

Conclusion:

The main thing that I keep learning over and over is that there will always be flaws in the design process, but some of those flaws can enrich the design. If you decide that you want to create a clothing collection, I say do it, just remember that if things don't turn out exactly the way you wanted, it's still Not Defined By Flaw.

Tehachapi to Lone Pine: Hell Comes in October -- Part 1

Dave is nearing the end of his MYTH, as he refers to it (Multi-Year Thru Hike). He completed the southern half of Washington State this year ending at Snoqualmie Pass. This story is from a hike he took in autumn of 2015. As he notes, it is in crisis that we learn the most about ourselves (and the trail).

This is a two-part account. You will have to wait until Monday to read the rest of the story.

Figuring I did not get enough of the Pacific Crest Trail in the spring of 2015, I asked my wife Luann if I could go back on the trail that fall. According to my copy of Gray's Anatomy, the human head weighs between 8-12 pounds. The variance is probably due to the absence of common sense, at least in my case. Brutal? Yes, on that September trip, I discovered several valuable lessons about the trail and myself. Especially learning there are Trail Angels always looking over you. It was a tough trip, to say the least. Let me tell you about it.

Pack loaded, Luann drove me to Modesto, CA, where I boarded an afternoon southbound train to Bakersfield. After a warm kiss goodbye, Luann returned home, and I headed south. Amtrak runs down the sun-drenched eastern side of the San Joaquin Valley in California. The train sped past emerald green fields of alfalfa, endless almond orchards, and golden waves of dry autumn grasses. This was the section where Theodore Solomon first looked at the Sierras and thought about a concept: "The idea of a crest parallel trail through the high sierra came to me one day while herding my Uncle's cattle in an immense unfenced field of alfalfa field near Fresno," he reflected in the Sierra Club Bulletin in 1940. That idea became what we know today as the John Muir Trail, an essential part of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Earlier that spring, I had hiked solo from Idyllwild to the PCT crossing at Cameron Road and Highway 58, between the California cities of Techappi and Mohave. Ending my 400-mile hike at the highway overpass, I called Kern County transit. The passing bus picked me up and dropped me off right at the Bakersfield Amtrak Station for my return home.

Contemplating the JMT, PCT, my spring hike, and Mr. Solomon's notions, the arrival at Bakersfield swiftly arrived. I departed the train and walked out of the train station to the local car rental office, where I had reserved an SUV for the final leg of the trip to Techappai. I would spend the remainder of my day preparing to return to the Pacific Crest Trail the following morning.

Speeding down Highway 58, a short hour's drive took me to the town of Tehachapi, where I rented a room and unloaded my gear. Then to Walmart, where I purchased gallons of water and some snacks. Car loaded, music playing, I headed out into the hot California afternoon, driving to pre-determined locations along the PCT to cache water. I spent the day hiding the jugs along a 70 mile stretch of the PCT, where the trail crossed near local roadways.

With my trail preparation chores done, I returned to the hotel and called it a night. Tomorrow would be my first day back on the dusty trail, the heat outside was omnipresent, yet I was excited to return.

I woke up to a bright clear day greeting me on that September morning; it was one of those sun-stricken Pacific Crest Trail days that you get in September, and I was ready to go! I returned the car, walked back to my hotel, enjoyed a last cool shower, and checked out of my room. Then, pack on my back, I walked to the bus stop a few blocks away from my motel. Where the Kern County transit was right on time, magically appearing along the roadway. Just like a time machine, the bus was rolling away in a cloud of dust, and I was right back where I stopped last spring at Hwy 58 and Cameron Road.

The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the highway via the Cameron Road overpass then parallels the highway eastwards for a few miles before turning northwards into the "Wild." So I stood was the infamous starting point where Cheryl Strayed, author of the book "Wild" began her journey northwards in 1999.

Cheryl chronicled her 900-mile trip along sections of the Pacific Crest Trail. At the age of twenty-two, she thought she had lost everything, her mother's passing, the family scattered, and a defunct marriage. So she made an impulsive decision with nothing more to lose: To hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington. But, having no experience as a long-distance hiker, she had a tough time on the hike.

My trip did not start as Cheryl's, as my start was hot, dry, and I started hiking late that sun-baked morning. After leaving the highway, the path immediately began gaining altitude. Still, it was great to be back on the trail with songs running through my mind. In the glaring southern California sun, my body took a toll from the heat, and I realized it was time to get out of the sun. Five miles was enough at this point, and a beckoning grove of Joshua trees looked just like the shady ticket I needed to get out of the sun.

Approaching the trees, I was surprised to see two pairs of eyes, bright and alert, as a couple of teal ducks looking back at me. Saying a cheery "Hello!" to the two girls lounging in the shade, I asked if I could join them. "No Problem!" Unloading my pack, I relaxed on a clear patch of ground in the shadow of the trees. Then looking at them, these two hikers, what a surprise, because, at the sound of their voices, I knew immediately who they were from an earlier encounter that past spring.

Angie and Claire were two young ladies from England who had read the book "Wild" and impulsively decided to quit their boring jobs and hike part of the PCT. My wife, Luann, and I had met them earlier in the summer as we returned from a High Sierra Camps outing in Tuolumne Meadows. They were just starting southwards on the PCT with large packs and a copy of "The John Muir Trail" by Elizabeth Wenk clutched in their hands. Knowing the book well, we said hello and asked about their plans. Their goal was to hike the JMT/PCT into Southern California. We chatted for a bit while standing on the bridge spanning Lyell Creek, and their enthusiasm for adventure was contagious. They were so excited!

Fast forward to lounging in the afternoon shade of a Joshua Tree, reunited along the trailside. We talked about our trips, people we met, and experiences along the trail for a couple of hours. Their plan was to catch a ride at Highway 58, then make their way to Disneyland for a couple of days before the trip home. Time passed, and as the sun lowered toward the western horizon, we bid farewell; best luck and continue onwards.

That night I camped near a noisy windmill farm, and hence the days began passing in a blur of heat, incessant gnats, glaring sun, nights spent on the unforgiving hot ground. The sun was vicious, the land stagnant. I could not even remember what a cool breeze felt until I reached the Walker Pass public campground. There I found water and a campsite. The trip had been brutal, and my body in poor shape. Not realizing it at the time, but I was dehydrated, and my electrolytes were off, and I was not thinking clearly. Logically felt that I would be ready to continue on the following morning; I wasn't.

Sunday morning, I wearily broke camp and shuffled to the PCT-Highway 178 crossing at Walker Pass. The sun breaking the horizon, I stared up the monumental ridge before me, and I resignedly said to myself, "I can't do it." Turning my back to the trail, retreating down the road, with songs playing in my mind, I told myself: Dave, "Sunday was a day of rest, and your soul needs some," I told myself. My trail guide noted local trail angels hosting hikers at their place, allowing backpackers to use their converted garage as a rest stop, so I headed in that direction.

Look, I know this and a few other of your prompts have been sitting in my inbox, but I finally finished this one. I like the fun tone I got here. Hope you like it!

“Oh my god, Gabriel. I’m so booored!”

Your voice was muffled, face pressed deep into the cushions of the ratty couch in Dean’s man cave. To say it’s been slow in the monster hunting business would be an understatement. It feels like forever since you’ve left the bunker for anything other than a food run.

“Well, what do you want me to do about it?” Gabriel questioned lightly, ripping a page from the TV guide to throw it at you from the armchair across the room. You felt the paper ball land on your back, jostling the pile of paper balls that had landed there before and sending a few others tumbling to the floor.

“Aren’t you an archangel?” You turned your head, batting away another paper ball he tossed at you. “Can’t you, like, snap up anything you want? Take me on a trip or something.”

Gabriel laughed at your pouty face. “Demanding little minx, aren’t you?”

“You know you love it,” you snarked back.

Through his full laughter was a snap of his fingers, and suddenly the couch underneath you vanished. Long grass softened the blow of your landing, and the warm sun on your back kept your annoyance for your archangel at bay. You stretched out comically, rolling over to your back and crossing your arms behind your head.

“Yes,” you grinned lazily, “this is what I’m talkin’ about.”

“Don’t get too comfy, sugar,” Gabriel smiled as his shadow fell over you. “Plenty more to do today then get ants down your back.”

Gabriel outstretched his hand to you and you took it so he could haul you off the ground. With a gentle push to his shoulder to turn him around, you leaped onto Gabriel’s back, legs and arms wrapping around the archangel.

“Onward, steed!” you crowed, landing a quick kiss to Gabriel’s cheek.

“Your wish is my command.”

After a short walk over a few picturesque foot hills, the pointed tops of fabric tents came into view. The sound of flags blowing in the summer breeze filled the air, and as Gabriel cleared the last hill, the small tent camp was fully revealed. The valley was spotted with deep reds and mossy greens of the canvas tents, and people wandered everywhere. You marveled at the scene as Gabriel walked you closer.

“Moondoor?” you read as you passed under the banner that welcomed you into the main circle. “Oh! Did we go back in time!!” The medieval dress of the villagers sent your excitement into high gear, and you could only clutch at Gabriel’s shoulders with elation.

“Hardly,” came a voice on the right, a redheaded woman striding over, a sword at her side and the moon insignia displayed brightly on her leather vest. “We only time travel every other weekend here.”

“Charlie!” Gabriel called as he felt you sink dejectedly on his back. He playfully slapped your thigh, letting you know he was going to let you down. With a deeply disappointed groan you slipped off Gabriel’s back, obviously sulking as you stood next to your archangel. “Still keeping your underlings in check, I see.”

“Hey, I look good in a crown,” Charlie declared with a smile.

Gabriel pulled her into a hug, “Good to see you again, Charles.” He was rewarded with a slap to the back of the head for his troubles. You raised an eyebrow at that, this girl had some balls to slap a freakin’ archangel like that. “This is Y/N,” Gabriel said as he threw an arm across your shoulders, tugging you closer and kissing your temple. Maybe he could feel the jealousy rolling off you and wanted to nip that in the bud. “Love of my life, right here.”

“Geez, get a room, you two,” Charlie laughed as she held out her hand to you. “Charlie Bradbury. Queen of Moondoor and all around geek. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Y/N,” you said as you shook Charlie’s hand. You got the feeling that this woman was good, that she was a friend, and with Gabriel shoveling affection towards you, any resentment you felt melted with Charlie’s smile beaming at you.

The three of you walked for a bit, Charlie showing off Moondoor. You could tell she was so proud of her ‘kingdom’, and even though Gabriel had only taken you to Michigan and not the distant past, this was still an amazing trip.

You had been in mock battles, eaten delicious food made over a fire, had an impromptu make out session hidden in the trees with Gabriel. All in all it was turning out to be a pretty perfect day.

But there is always some asshole that has to ruin it for you.

Standing together in a clearing, you, Gabriel and Charlie were talking about nothing. A group dressed in plain tunics and trousers were walking by. None of you were really paying attention to them when-

SLAP!!

Gabriel jumped, the whack to his ass throwing him for a bit of a loop.

“Joshua!” Charlie snarled at the man that had walked by. “What the hell is wrong with you?!”

Joshua smirked as he turned back to the three of you, but before he could speak, you stepped up in front of Gabriel, a look of fury burning in your eyes.

“Do you know who you just touched? That’s my boyfriend!”

Gabriel smirked behind you, a snap of his fingers and your simple period outfit became a full battle regalia, a shield hanging on your arm and a very real looking sword in the other. “You get ‘em, baby,” the archangel cackled, massaging your shoulders as he locked his own fierce gaze on Joshua, who was now understandably shaking in his leather boots.

Joshua looked to Charlie, hoping for some support, but he wouldn’t find it in his queen.

“You deserve this, Josh,” Charlie mused. “And when Y/N is finished with you, I never wanna see you here again. You earned yourself a lifetime ban from Moondoor,” she added, then looked back to you. “He’s all yours.”

Joshua’s gaze jumped to Gabriel, and the archangel pointed two fingers at his eyes and then at Joshua in the international symbol for I’m watching you. He jolted on the spot, and the fear in his eyes grew as he looked back to you.

“Now get the hell out of here before I split you down the middle and leave you for the coyotes.”

Joshua turned on his heels immediately, running off and never looking back.

“My hero,” Gabriel swooned dramatically as he draped himself on your back, hugging you and kissing your cheek.

“Mmm” you hummed, the adrenaline cooling off in your veins, “I’ll always defend your honor, sugar lips.”

Gabriel laughed, reaching around to twist you in his grip, pulling you close and kissing you passionately.

Join me May 14-16, 2021 in Joshua Tree National Park for a multi-day immersive experience amongst ethereal Joshua Trees, amazing rock formations and dark skies. This unforgettable photographic experience will include four Golden Hours and two nights exploring the vast arid landscapes in one of the country's most interesting National Parks.

About The Workshop

During this workshop, I will guide you through Joshua Tree National Park while helping you to translate emotion and vision through our photographic medium. I am dedicated to providing the best instruction on all aspects of the art of landscape photography and night photography. Whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned pro, I am ready to help you move forward with your photography as all levels are welcome to participate. Together we will create an unforgettable photographic experience this spring by chasing light and capturing the early spring night sky.

Itinerary

Tentative Schedule: Since this is a field workshop, we will remain flexible to weather and light conditions to ensure we are able to shoot during the most ideal conditions. The final itinerary with exact times will be made available on Day 1. Lodging, airfare, transportation, park fees and all meals are the responsibility of the attendee.

Transportation

No Transportation will be provided to, from or during the workshop. All attendees are responsible for arranging their own transportation. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance may allow you more ease on some roads throughout the park.

Airports

The nearest airport is in Palm Springs, California

Los Angeles is about 140 Miles to the West

San Diego is about 170 Miles to the South

Rental Cars

Many options are available for renting a vehicle of any kind from either airport listed above. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance could make driving easier on some roads in the park.

Accomodation

Hotels:

There is no lodging available within Joshua Tree National Park. However, there are many places to stay in nearby communities. Please contact area chambers of commerce for information.

I would recommend staying in 29 Palms or just outside of the park towards the town of Joshua Tree. You will find lots of accommodations in both of those areas including hotels and AirBnB.

Camping:

Camping is very popular in Joshua Tree and campgrounds sell out quickly. Learn more about the nine campgrounds in Joshua Tree. There are also a number of options for camping outside of the park. Restaurants, Grocery Stores, & Picnic Areas:

There are no restaurants or grocery stores inside Joshua Tree National Park, but nearby communities provide these services. Check with area chambers of commerce for more information.

Joshua Tree has eight picnic areas: Cottonwood, Indian Cove, Live Oak, Split Rock, Cap Rock, Hidden Valley, Quail Springs, and Black Rock. Their locations are shown on the map here at the bottom of the page.

Remember: help us keep wildlife wild. Never feed wild animals. Store food in hard-sided containers or in your vehicle. Carefully clean up all trash and leftovers, even small crumbs.

Things to Bring

It’s always good to know what equipment you need. If you have any questions about the necessities I’m here to help, but here is a list of essentials and recommendations for the trip:

Equipment:

DSLR / Mirrorless camera and lenses

DSLR or Mirrorless camera is an essential tool to get the most out of the workshop and your photos

Wide Angle Lens - 12-24mm (Faster lenses are better for night photography, but not essential)

Mid to Long Range Zoom - 24-70, 70-200, 100-400 are great ranges to capture intimate scenes

Tripod (Sturdy as the Fall months can have very strong winds)

All filters you might have, a Circular Polarizer is a great tool

Remote / cable camera shutter

Needed for tack sharp images and long exposures

Several memory cards

You never want to run out of space for pictures. Bring several or empty at the end of the day

Spare camera batteries

Another thing you never want to run out of in the field. Bring several fully charged with you and charge over night

Head torch (for any night or low light walking and shooting)

Raincover for camera and camera bag cold come in handy in some rare cases of rain or high wind!

Small Camping Chair or Stool for comfort

Clothing Items:

Many layers -It should be quite mild to warm for our trip, bt May can still hold a few cold nights. Plan for warm days and mild nights

Gloves, Warm Hat, warm socks (If there’s a cold spell)

Sunglasses, Large Brim hat, and Sunscreen are recommended for the daytime

Hiking Shoes\Boots are recommended

FOOD:

Food, Water, and all other essentials. No Food or water will be provided before, during or after workshop; unless otherwise stated in the itinerary.

Plan ahead and have plenty of water available as it is very dry and can warm quickly on clear days.

Physical Requirements

Some hiking will be required, but the hikes will be around 1-2 miles at most. Most of the hiking is very flat and moderate in difficulty at best. Typically shooting is done within a mile of the car and most hiking should be generally light in elevation change. We’ll be sure to move at a fair pace and no student will be left behind.

Please make me aware of any concerns you might have about your physical abilities.

Payment, Fees and Terms

COST: The cost of the workshop is $950 and includes everything listed in the “What’s Included” Section

PAYMENT: A non-refundable deposit of $250 is required to reserve a space on this workshop. The final balance of $950 is due and payable 60 days before the workshop begins. Full payment is due at that time or thereafter, and there will be no refunds on the full amount owed if you cancel after final payment. However, if another client happens to fill your space, you will receive a full refund, minus your non-refundable deposit. Payment(s) can be made using the Add To Cart button of this web page using a credit card via Paypal and Stripe. If you would like to pay by another method, use the contact form on this page to ask Chris about options for sending a personal check or bank transfer.

COVID-19 ADVISORY:

In accordance with state and local public health organizations, Chris Ewen Crosby Photography & Samy's Photo School are following all COVID-19 related protocols. All participants will be asked to maintain social distancing protocols of 6 feet from anyone not in their household. Face coverings are mandatory for all. The class size for this event has been limited to only 5 students to further minimize the risks associated with COVID-19. Please do not attend this class if you are experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19 including fever of 100.4 or higher, cough, shortness of breath, loss of sense of taste/smell, fatigue, diarrhea, muscle aches and headache.

Participants will be required to sign a COVID-19 addendum and assumption of risk form

CANCELLATIONS: Cancellations require me to re-open enrollment and/or to engage in additional promotional efforts to fill the workshop on a short notice, therefore, my policy is that there will be no refunds of the deposit. The balance (minus the non-refundable deposit) is refundable up to the 60-day deadline. Thereafter, the balance is also non-refundable, with one exception: if we find participants to fill all canceled spaces and the workshop is ultimately full when it begins, then you will receive a refund of the balance within two weeks of the workshop’s conclusion. The deposit remains non-refundable. All refunds are subject to a 6% processing fee. I highly recommend that you obtain travel/cancellation insurance for all workshops to protect yourself against unusual circumstances.

PARK FEES: All attendees of the workshop are required to pay the National Park Entrance fees upon entry to the park and are not included in Workshop Fee. Further instruction will be provided to students prior to their visit.

Joshua Tree Entrance Fee - per vehicle - $30.00

This permit allows all persons traveling with the permit holder in one single private, non-commercial vehicle (car/truck/van) to leave and re-enter the park as many times as they wish during the 7-day period from the date of purchase.

Joshua Tree Entrance Fee - per motorcycle - $25.00

This permit allows persons traveling on one motorcycle to leave and re-enter the park as many times as they wish during the 7-day period from the date of purchase.

Your satisfaction, enjoyment and educational experience is important to me. The goal of this workshop is to allow you to further understand your camera, composition and artistic expression while using the amazing landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park. I want to ensure that everyone comes away with great instruction as well as a great experience in nature. Most importantly, we are going to have fun! Having fun is a critical part of any good photography adventure. When you have fun, your mind is free to expand and learn.

POST PROCESSING

Post Processing is not included with this workshop. You can purchase an additional 3 hours of post processing instruction with this workshop that will be completed following the workshop. Editing is done via group video session in the following weeks from the workshop. It is recorded and available for download shortly after the session is complete. FACTS

— Damian is one of many Fitzgeralds that have been at Broadripple Academy since its establishment, making him a Legacy. He’s been fed stories of Broadripple and its prestige since he was very young, making him something of a fanboy of the academy. He’s very loyal to the school and tends to do whatever he can to get others to admire and support it in the way he does.

— The Fitzgeralds are a very traditional and conservative type of family. Image and excellence are very important to them. A lot of the way Damian is can be largely explained by how his parents expect him to be. It’s very strict and standards are extremely high. You’re expected to have stellar grades, be the definition of good and upstanding, be well-known and well-received. No room failure, no causing scenes, no scandals -- certainly abide by the Bible and the rules of whatever establishment you’re part of. It’s a very perfectionist (not to mention narcissistic) type of family.

— Damian is the Fenwick house captain, a title he carries with much pride. He takes his role as a student leader very seriously and can get a bit intense with how involved he sometimes is with the lives of his house members ( who he fondly refers to as his ‘Fenwick family’. ) He aims to be something of a big brother figure to them but tends to come off more like a dad.

— Considering his roles of leadership and various other commitments, Damian doesn’t often have much down time and it shows. His life is the school and his responsibilities, and it’s very difficult for him to relax and simply be a teenager. He has an ‘all eyes are on him’ type of mentality. It’s particularly evident in the way he talks and carries himself. He’s completely oblivious to the fact that he doesn’t have the vocabulary and mannerisms of your everyday teenager.

— Despite how well he seems to carry the image of Broadripple’s Golden Boy, Damian finds himself struggling behind closed doors. He has desires of his own he’d like to commit more time to or even show interest in but he knows his parents ( and God ) would frown upon it so he denies himself. He’s quite repressed and the consequences of that often present itself in stiff behavior and irritation for the most random things.

HEADCANONS

Damian’s most-prized possession is a Rolesor Datejust Rolex 41 in oystersteel and yellow gold that is worn on his right wrist, given to him by his father when he secured the position of Fenwick captain. He is almost always seen wearing it unless he’s swimming or working out.

Damian wears a gold-plated cross necklace underneath his clothes. It was given to him when he was three. All Fitzgerald children have one and were instructed to wear it at all times unless there’s good reason not to (ex. swimming competitively).

A lot of Damian’s belongings are embroidered or monogrammed with his initials (D.E.F.). Most popularly, his handkerchief (or rather, handkerchiefs. He has many ironed and folded in his closet at all times). But also his water bottle, his leather satchel, his planner, his journal, his leather padfolio, his toiletry kit, his travel grooming kit... You get the idea.

Damian drives a 2019 Aston Martin DB11 V8 in divine red. It was recently given to him on his birthday in April. He’s very careful about it and is under strict instruction to keep it in pristine condition, so he’s very selective about who he lets in his car and how people should act in it.

Damian is a passionate dog dad. He has a beagle named Alpha who is the main reason he goes home on the weekends. Though it is only Alpha who is supposed to be his responsibility, Damian has taken to training all of the Fitzgerald children’s beagles and is deeply knowledgeable on dog training and care of canines.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RETREAT

What do they think about The Retreat?

If you ask House Captain Damian, he believes in making the most of the situation and he’s thankful for the Nighmore community for their generosity and quick-thinking. Polite, diplomatic, and positive. Everything a House Captain should be. Inwardly and if he’s being totally truthful with himself, Damian is leaning towards not liking it largely due to with his issues with cleanliness and being accustomed to a certain level of luxury. But make the most of it, amirite?

Do they have any previous experience with camping or other outdoors?

Damian doesn’t have much experience with camping. He’s gone on a church camp in Joshua Tree once but that was very much glamping, with all of the luxuries of the indoors provided to him at close distance and the comfort of AC in his tent. However, he does have experience with the outdoors due to his love for skiing and hiking. He’ll talk all about hiking in Interlaken while vacationing in Switzerland if you give him the time. He also just really likes walks and quiet places when his head is feeling particularly heavy. Also, he lit a campfire like once and that was with the help of the hike guide.

What does their cabin bunk look like? How will they decorate their space?

Damian was very hesitant about bringing his belongings into the old cabin (fear of mold, dust, termites and whatnot) but he knew he had to put on a brave face and deal with the card that’s been dealt as House Captain so it looks similar to his old dorm but very toned down. His mattress is still fitted with his white hotel-type linens with a red duvet over the top in hopes of making it more comfortable. The photos stuck above his desk have been moved to the wall beside his bed. A photo of himself and his younger sister smiling with her face partially covered, a cute photo of a very happy Alpha with his tongue sticking out, an old photo of the God Squad all smiles having a picnic. He’s also hung his monthly planner whiteboard on the wall because it’s filled with too many important reminders.

Do they believe in the supernatural? To what degree?

Though Catholicism has had a long history in the Fitzgerald family, it’s waned over time. One might say they only do it for the tradition of it all and the sense of moral superiority. But mostly, they use religion as a way to influence their children’s behavior, keep them on the right and godly path and away from choices that could hurt their future or the family’s reputation. So Damian has mixed feelings about the supernatural. He very much believes in the Heaven and Hell part of the supernatural, particularly the God and Hell part, but he doesn’t believe in ghosts and demons and all of that nonsense.

Are they easily spooked?

No. Surprisingly, Damian would sooner buy a logical or medical reason behind unexplained things than a supernatural reason. If something goes bump in the night, Damian would first think something fell than it be a murdererous Casper the Ghost or something. Like for example, the Fitzgeralds often describe the Edith Lynch story as a ‘terrible mishap that people have blown out of proportion’ and follow it with ‘hopefully that girl got the help she needs’. They’re just like, she went crazy, it’s not demon-possession.

AND FINALLY,

The Lord will protect me from any evil. Ghosts? Raging animals? Monsters? Serial killers? They don’t have SHIT on our Lord Jesus Christ.

Sounds about right but Damian will eye twitch over that s-bomb. So close to muttering a stern ‘language’ in reminder.

Section 4 - Chapter 29

7% of you chose to stay.

“I’m coming,” You say softly, nerves calming almost instantly as the twelve boys’ glares turn to relieved sighs. Seungkwan smiles up at you in thanks, though his look is uneasy. Weak, in fact.

“Then we’re leaving,” Coups announces, “Now.”

You watch Wonwoo shut the book and tuck it into his pocket. Soonyoung and Junhui begin cleaning up the blankets across the floor. “Now?” You frown, “Where?”

Chan responds this time, nudging your arm gently and nodding over towards the apartment door. “We saw a sign a few days ago, when Jeonghan and I went out… There’s a train that goes up the mountain. It stops by that small city, if I’m remembering correctly.”

You steady your heartbeat, watching Coups count heads again as the group readies to leave. The words ‘up the mountain’ terrify you, especially with a chance of help finally on the way, but you take a deep breath and let Seungkwan guide you towards the front door regardless. Vernon needs you. No one could ever risk losing him.

Minghao pulls a heavy book from the nearest drawer alongside a marker, uncapping the thing and scribbling away at the hardback cover without a word. The twelve of you wait for him by the door with brows raised, watching as he centers the book against the welcome mat.

Shua frowns. “What are you-“

“Leaving directions,” Hao answers simply, “The company will find us. Alive, hopefully.”

“Don’t say that,” Seokmin mumbles, clutching Jihoon’s shirt in fear. You all walk out without bothering to look back, taking the elevator in eerie silence and pouring out onto the street under the dim morning sky. The city is so uncomfortably quiet as you walk. Chan and Jeonghan lead the group, and you trot along hesitantly at Seungkwan’s side. Though ordinary that no one is out and about at this hour, something is clearly off. Every storefront and colorful home feel gray and abandoned.

The thirteen of you reach the train station after a long while, doing your best to ignore the city’s silence and gathering the last of your money to buy tickets for the ride. Coups recounts every head on the way in, uneasy despite the strong expression on his face. Empty seats greet you other than a few older people here and there, paying no mind to you all as they daze off into the early morning. You settle into an empty seat by the window, Seungkwan seating himself beside you while Wonwoo and Jun sit across the way.

The loud engine sounds, and the train pulls back for a second only to slowly begin chugging forward. Kwan plays with his fingers at your side, eyes glazed over as if he were being sent away.

“Feels weird,” He murmurs through a pout, refusing to meet your eyes. His head hangs low the moment after speaking. “Without Hansol. And… going back. I don’t… I don’t know if I can do it.”

“You can,” You whisper, bowing your head to meet his eyes. Wonwoo flips through his book in front of you. Junhui stares vaguely in your direction, an intense glare as if upset. You glance up at him quickly, only for him to blink in surprise and turn away like he’d never been looking.

Before you can speak on it, however, Wonwoo clears his throat, calling the attention of the entire group sitting nearby.

“Listen to this...” He begins, reading steadily off of the page, “‘Disappearances on the mountain have become the people’s normal, and scarily enough, an expected schedule throughout the harsh of every year’s winter. As the weather gets colder, the mountain’s inhabitants have made a routine of barricading themselves in their homes, ignoring all outside sounds and waiting until thoroughly safe to return to daily life. Though dismissed by elders as a curse of the mountain’s spirits, these timely disappearances are often theorized as the work of a cult.’ That’s crazy, isn’t it? Theorized, not proven.”

“That’s why the city’s so quiet,” Joshua comments, “It must be the time of year people start to go missing.”

“Does it say more?” Soonyoung asks, turned about in his seat as he peeks over the backrest of Jun’s chair. Wonwoo nods briefly before continuing where he left off. “‘According to heavily denied folklore, a group of men many years back gathered a following in their home of Seoul, eventually moving their beliefs out into the mountain and spreading word of their ways to its people. The cult’s members are said to follow a strict sacrificial ritual of sixteen victims annually, horrifyingly including those of their own family. Visitors claim them to take shelter at the mountain’s highest peak, in a mansion previously owned by one of its several founders, though police reports and nearby communities strongly insist the building to have been abandoned.”

The entire group shares a collective breath of both fear and awe, leaving a second of silence for everyone to process the story amongst themselves. You and the others share the same thoughtful, uneasy glare. Wonwoo clears his throat again, pushing his glasses further up on his nose and adjusting the book in hand.

“Do I keep reading?” He asks, glancing around. Coups nods, sitting across the way and holding a hand to his chin in deep thought. You huddle a bit closer to Seungkwan as an eerie breeze runs through the window, and Junhui glares once more your way while Wonwoo turns another page beside him.

“Two cult’s founders eventually strayed from their nightmarish religion, however, when demanded for the blood of their own young children… eventually gathering a following of their own and causing an uprising against the cult they themselves created. Many were said to have been killed in the long lasting battle between either party. Though one was rumored to have taken a heavy stab through the hand, both runaway members disappeared without a trace, believed to be dead and sacrificed by their own people. Some even claim to see cloaked figures hiding throughout the night… yet despite countless attempts to gather proof of this cult’s existence, no official statements or evidence have proven such stories to be true.”

The man with the scar on his hand comes to mind within mere moments, and you shudder at the memory of him reaching out to help you and Hansol back at the cave. A founder… a traitor to the cult he ruled. And not dead, not from what you’ve seen. Someone against his people… someone on your side.

Wonwoo flips through a few more pages before looking up and meeting the group’s curious eyes.

“That’s all they say about the cult,” He says, “Everything else is just trivia on the mountain’s history.”

“So some murderers made a big club, then two ran away when they wanted their babies?” Chan asks, almost jokingly despite his dead serious expression. Mingyu, on his right, throws a slightly forceful nudge into the kid’s arm, giving him a warning glare before chiming into the conversation. “How is it that nobody’s ever caught them on camera?” He asks, “The police seem to keep denying it, when there’s obviously something going on.” “You can’t trust those guys,” Jihoon comments quietly, “They saw a body and put us on their wanted list for no reason.” “This whole mountain sucks,” Soonyoung mutters. Seokmin, sitting beside him, seems to agree.

“I hope the company finds us soon,” He mumbles, “I wanna find Hansol and go straight home.”

“So where does the train stop?” Jeonghan cuts in suddenly, leaning forward a bit in his seat to meet Chan’s eyes a ways away. Chan huddles down to pull a flyer from the chair’s side pocket, unfolding the paper and scanning the page with a concentrated stare. “The furthest it goes is pretty far off from the village, so we might have to camp a night. I brought one of the bags... Hopefully that’s all we need.” “The furthest?” Mingyu asks, “Is there another stop?” “Yeah, right before it. Should be… at… hang on… oh, the city. The one with Mr. Seong, and the barbersh-” “Can we stop there?” You find yourself asking before you can even think through the question. As you sit upright in your seat, hands gripping the armrests eagerly, twelve pairs of confused eyes trail up to meet your own.

“Are you stupid?” Soonyoung retorts, glaring at you over Junhui’s chair. Jun angrily throws his hand back a bit, hitting the boy on top of the head before Coups chimes in. “Can we…? Huh? You wanna stop further from the mansion?”

“I just…”

You lose your sense of thought quite quickly, feeling nervous and judged from the intense stares of the many others. The man who helped you, the one with the school bus… Everything in your heart tells you to go back and see him just once more. It’s a simple reason, but admittedly not the best urge to have at such a moment.

“You’re wasting time,” Soonyoung begins with a frown, “Just like always.”

“No, I’m listening,” Coups interrupts in a gentle tone, sure to hold eye contact despite Soonyoung’s annoyed groans a few seats off. You feel thankful, but try to force your own will back down.

“It’s… No, no. It’s okay. Nevermind.” You mutter, “We have to get Vernon. Soonyoung’s right.” “It’s that guy, isn’t it?”

You feel a sense of sadness wash over you at Seungcheol’s realization, tensing up and letting your gaze fall abruptly to the train floor. Trees fly by outside. The sound of wheels on tracks thankfully interrupt the silence.

“The one with the bus? Who saved us from the cops… gave us the address. You wanna go back to see him.” Cheol looks on at you with a soft smile, eyes full of understanding despite knowing nothing behind your reason. You stay quiet, letting his words unfold.

“It’s… The way Vernon’s so weird about the apartment, about Uncle. You never questioned him. You always kept his privacy safe. Even when we needed that address… you took the heat for guiding the way.” “How did you know about that?” You ask. Cheol smiles a little wider. “He told me last night, before I knocked out and he went missing. Said you’ve been some kind of angel to him, or something. He’s quiet. I know he never tells you, but he’s probably twice as grateful for you as any of us are. And that’s a lot.”

You allow your eyes to fall back down by your feet, feeling your cheeks redden in nervousness and a sense of genuine surprise. Seungcheol’s words are endlessly relieving to hear. He nods your way, ignoring the silent stares of the others around you. “If Vernon were here,” He begins, “He’d beg me to let you go see that man. For your sake. So for his... It’s only right that we stop at the city.” “Are you kidding me?” Soonyoung groans, throwing his head in his hand out of frustration, “We’re gonna take forever to get there when Vernon could be-” “He’d want this,” Seungkwan barks suddenly, brows furrowed in your defense, “If you know Hansol at all, he’d want this.” “Yeah, she wanted to stay in the damn apartment and now she wants to take the longer route. She’s trying to get him killed, but you’re all so sure that they have some kind of connection.”

“The city isn’t even that far off from the last stop,” Kwan explains angrily, “It’s not gonna take that fucking long to-”

“Just wake me up at whatever stop we’re stopping at.”

You can’t see him over the chairs, but it’s not hard to imagine a cranky Soonyoung crossing his arms and turning away to avoid arguments through a nap. You feel a sense of utmost guilt as Cheol shakes his head, visibly awestruck at the fight breaking the peace of the train. You watch Jihoon and Wonwoo lay their heads back to get some rest. Chan turns to Mingyu, sharing the flyer with him as they glance over the colorful pages together. The rest fall into quiet conversation, heads in their hands as they gaze out of the windows at the scarcely falling snow.

You sink into the cushion of your chair with a tired sigh, feeling completely exhausted from the last few moments alone. Seungkwan turns to you with a gentle, comforting grin.

“Ignore anyone else’s opinions,” He says with a hushed voice, “This is your choice to make. Just let me know, and I’ll tell Coups for you.”

“Kwan, I don’t know…” “It’s okay. You have the whole ride to think it over.”

You can’t help but frown at the thought of the situation, especially with the pressure of Hansol missing and the dire need to see that man… just one last time. Your priorities feel jumbled. Seungkwan pats your knee, Junhui watches him do so with a pout.

“Get some rest,” Kwan says softly. You nod, trying to occupy your mind with the cool breeze and bumpy ride, rather than the hell the situation is. The air is quiet, and peaceful for once, despite the moments to unfold the second you’re out in the open. You glance around at the twelve others resting around you, silently making up your mind as the train chugs steadily along the track.

- Stop at the city.

- Wait until the final stop.
