Violent Night (2022, dir. Tommy Wirkola) - review by Rookie-Critic

Violent Night sees Wirkola in familiar, but strangely light-hearted territory. Equal parts Home Alone and Bad Santa, David Harbour plays a Claus that's at his wits end with how greedy and capitalist Christmas has become; set to drink himself through his job forevermore to escape the mundane task of delivering video game after video game to endless houses. Harbour was practically born to play this version of Kringle, and the anti-charm he brings to the role is endearing in a lovable grump kind of way. Then there's Trudy, the little girl at the film's center who is almost too sweet to be apart of a movie this committed to being vulgar. Her love of the "magic of Christmas" and general innocence is infectious, and it makes this movie from the director of both Dead Snow movies seem like Miracle on 34th Street in comparison. John Leguizamo plays a very convincing smarmy, "anti-Christmas" villain, and the opposing chemistry he has not just with Harbour, but with pretty much everyone he interacts with on screen is entertaining to watch.

I think that's really what it boils down to. This is just a solid, fun joyride with a more vulgar, violent Santa. It is absolutely derivative of similar "adult Christmas" films that came before it, and it is capitalizing on a very popular trend of Christmas movies leaning away from the clean, shiny, magical films of decades past, but I don't care. Tommy Wirkola weaves it all together to make something that, if not memorable, is sure as hell fun to watch. The action scenes are engaging, with needle drops (consisting of alternative Christmas tunes to match the alternative feel of the film) that instantly make you smile and perk up, eager to watch Santa bash that robber's head in with a sledgehammer. Speaking of the sledgehammer, I won't give too much away, but they introduce this wild Santa backstory out of left field about halfway through the movie, and it was so unbelievably interesting that I would have loved for them to expand on it. They kind of do, but there are a lot of implications about Santa before he was Santa, and questions about how he even became Santa at all, that go largely unaddressed, which is a bummer because it was the aspect of the film I was easily the most invested in. I highly doubt we'll ever see a Violent Night 2, but if we ever do, I really hope Wirkola answers some of these burning questions I have.

The only other complaint I have with the film, and it would be a bigger complaint if it committed to it more, is that this film seems to subscribe to something that a lot of Christmas-related media seems to convey, which is this philosophy that Christmas is somehow greedier than it used to be, not as magical as it used to be, that Christmas was better in "the good old days" (whatever that means). I just can't get on board with that state of mind. Sure, Christmas isn't as magical as it was when we were kids, but that's because we're not kids anymore. I'm sure a lot of kids nowadays still feel about Christmas the way we all did when we were young. I'll admit the kinds of gifts children receive nowadays has largely changed, but that doesn't mean they're worse or less magical. The kid receiving a copy of Kirby and the Forgotten Land or even something a little more adult like God of War: Ragnarok is probably just as excited and reveres that gift with just as much childlike wonder as the kid that received a model train set or action figure 30 or 40 years ago. Thankfully, Wirkola doesn't really seem to commit to this idea too hard before the film just becomes Santa vs. the Home Invaders.

Violent Night about met my expectations. It's an entertaining, bloody Christmas movie that manages to capture the essence and spirit of the holiday in the most interesting, off-beat way, and Harbour proves himself as a compelling lead actor in a way that his past efforts just haven't allowed him to show (I'm looking at you, Hellboy).

Score: 8/10

Synopsis: You yourself is a doe and gave birth to twins with another or more baby’s on the way

You were laying in both yours and Alastors bed both in undergarments as you wrapped yourself around your husband. Luckily after your free time he bathed you with roses and scented french vanilla so you wouldn’t feel dirty once awoken.

You noticed him slowly awakening “Good morning beloved, how did you sleep?” You ask cheerfully as you touch his ears stroking one of them making him let out a soft sigh before nuzzling into your neck where bite marks and hickeys were everywhere on you.

He slowly rubbed your stomach as the now showing the baby bump, “I slept wonderfully My dear, how about you-” That’s when you both hear tiny footsteps slamming your door open.

“Mama!!!” Your three year old son exclaimed jumping on the bed to hug you but before he could Alastor held him before your son could do any harm to you or the baby. “Now Now Aydin we wouldn’t want to hurt your mother or your siblings” Alastor scolded with a smile making Aydin pout before making grabby arms at you as he was close to tears

“Aww my sweet baby” You cooed at your son as you gently took him away from Alastor before cuddling him and rocking back n forth.

“Papa, Mama?” Your daughter called out as she rubbed her eyes tiredly, Alastor smiled at her before picking her up as she laid her head on his shoulder still wanting to sleep

“Hello my little fawn, how did you sleep?” Alastor asked his daughter as she yawned.

“It was good papa!” She said cheerfully before glancing at you holding Aydin as he drifts to sleep. “How did you sleep mama?” you daughter asked as she was settled next to you so Alastor can go make breakfast for you and the babies.

“I slept good my little Aurora” You answered her before kissing her cheek.

Both your babies cuddled against you can see they have his hair type but your eyes and white freckles but also his sharp teeth. They also still have ears and a tail of course, They don’t have their uncontrollable smile yet but you could tell it’s coming soon.

And Soon they will have their own powers to control.

“Here you are my doe” Alastor said placing a tray with Pancakes and Jasmine tea, You thanked him with a kiss on his lips before he woke up the kids to go eat breakfast.

You both watched them as they rushed to go eat as you chuckled, “What seems to be funny my dear?” Alastor asked smirking at you.

“They really are your Fawns, You three are just so similar in different ways but get bored easily and cause mischief” You explained as he smiled at you softly before taking your hand then kissing each of your knuckles.

“thank you for gifting me with this and our fawns My Doe” He said genuinely as he finally kiss your lips slowly.

“Of course My love, I love you to hell and back and Any day these fawns will be part of this lovely family” You spoke gently as he smiles in excitement.

“Yes and i’m sure Aurora and Aydin would be great brothers and sisters to their new siblings” Alastor added as kissed you baby bump.

Oh he just couldn’t wait till this family is expanded

god i cannot stop thinking about how much of the struggle with the gods and mortals in downfall is like “if we created these people we are also responsible for them” and a lot of the mess and betrayal that exists is disagreements over what responsibility requires - is it responsibility to abandon a horrid creation? is it responsibility to treat them as if they do not and cannot know any better?

except, unlike all the other deities, the matron of ravens did not have a hand in creating exandria and it’s mortals, and in fact is the only one who had open eyes to the degree of responsibility implicit in her role. and as with all the gods her idea of responsibility is different than all of her siblings’, but i also think there’s an honesty (albeit a very uh . hubris charged honesty - said with deep love for the epitome of weirdo archmages who managed to ascend to godhood) in the way that we see emhira treat mortals as fully in control to such a degree that the gods are founded in their defence of themselves and other mortals from the selfishness of aeor. like her fantastic response to aydin’s claim that they can show the aeorians better by reminding him, dad, that these mortals aren’t scared they’re hating and if you stop them this time but leave behind the knowledge to repeat it, they Will repeat it.

and i mean we still don’t know the true depths of the matron of raven’s reasons for ascending nor do we know the willingness of the previous god of death but there is something so compelling to me that, on top of being the only god who has truly known mortality who Chose to look after the domain that promises the end that affirms mortality, the matron of ravens is not a Creator of mortals the way that other gods are but she might have a deeper or more poignant kind of responsibility for them because she is the one who had the most complete image of what godhood would look like versus the bundles of light that stumbled into the real and found and grasped at whatever purpose they could.
