A post I made on Wordpress a few days ago in which I examine the life and work of the notorious Carol Dempster. While a lot of critics act like she was 100% snubbed by the 1920s moviegoing public, she did have a few fans and even the critics were wont to throw her a bone now and then.

Sherlock Holmes (1922) starring John Barrymore as the titular sleuth isn’t the greatest Holmes film ever made.  It is underwhelming with an underachieving Moriarty.  Also, Holmes falls in love which is just weird.
Barrymore is stunningly handsome, so it has that going for it.  Also, it is fun to see a practically juvenile William Powell as well as Roland Young (Watson) in their debut roles.
Movies Silently has a great recap.  Rumor has it that Barrymore disliked Carol Dempster (the film’s romantic interest) so much that a stand-in was required for the final embrace.  As you can see from the awkward positioning that may very well be true.   My first thought when watching it was that she was rejecting him, but that wasn’t the case.
Again, not a great film, but an interesting one from a historical standpoint.  Plus, it is nice to just look at Barrymore even when the action and plot are just so-so.

Fun Size Review: The Love Flower (1920)
Fun Size Review: The Love Flower (1920)
D.W. Griffith offers adventure, romance, exotic climes, a leering camera and Carol Dempster to the viewing public. The viewing public says: “Thanks but no thanks.” Carol is a zany teen determined to save her father from a murder charge in this kitchen sink (as in everything but) caper.

“That always comes with development and progress,” sighed the Philosopher, studying the glow of his cigar. “Of course, they will all keep on working under the Griffith eye, making their pictures at the Mamaroneck studios, but the old ensemble will be gone,” went on the Gossip. “Harron is now working with Chet Withey as director.
