One of the things I sometimes think about is how Elizabeth and Darcy’s relationship is perceived through a very, very heavily gendered lens. They live in a very gendered society and participate in its norms, so it’s not that gendered readings of their characters come out of nowhere. But I do think it’s so heavily emphasized that we lose track of the ways in which their gender associations are ultimately more complex than that.

One of Elizabeth’s strongest affinities, after all, is with a man: her father. They value each other for their shared wit, intelligence, and similar senses of humour, though her feelings about him are complicated by the consideration for others that neither of her parents share with her. She generally feels alienated by her mother (though she resembles her in some ways). At her worst, she’s carried away by her wit (like Mr Bennet), liveliness (like Mrs Bennet), and vanity (like both).

Meanwhile, P&P tightly links Darcy to Lady Catherine, his maternal aunt. Her snobbery, micro-managing, and self-righteousness look like nothing so much as amped-up versions of his worst qualities. When Elizabeth wonders, near the end of the novel, how she could ever have thought him like Lady Catherine—well, he brought that one on himself! As with Elizabeth, there are ways he resembles his same-gender parent, but his link to Lady Catherine is much more pronounced in the narrative.

In the Netherfield scenes, Elizabeth aligns herself with Bingley, and Caroline with Darcy. The only people in the neighbourhood who stick up for Darcy are both women: Charlotte, for pragmatic reasons, while Jane genuinely likes him. Darcy seems to have good opinions of them both; he remarks that Mr Collins was lucky to have married Charlotte, while he excludes Jane from his generalizations about the Bennets in his letter (and parallels her in a number of ways).

Elizabeth then develops an infatuation with Wickham, who seems very much like her on the surface: friendly, lively, and charming.

In Kent, Elizabeth develops an easy rapport with Colonel Fitzwilliam that also seems based on (greater) similarity of temperament, contrasting with the active effort she’ll put in with timid Georgiana (before and after Elizabeth’s marriage to Darcy; also by contrast, Georgiana only really talks when Darcy is around).

At Pemberley, we meet the person who most illuminates Darcy’s character apart from Darcy himself—a woman, Mrs Reynolds. And interestingly, P&P is structured in such a way that in the happy ending at Pemberley, we hear of Lady Catherine reconciling with Darcy and coming to visit (while, of course, his idolized but dead father is absent), and of Mr Bennet visiting Elizabeth, but not Mrs Bennet. So these cross-gender relationships and affinities remain important to the end.

And, of course, Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship with each other is far from one of opposites, despite some temperamental differences. You could easily see Elizabeth and Jane as each paired off with someone more or less like them; all four are good, principled people, but mild, open-hearted Jane marries mild, open-hearted Bingley, while clever, strong-willed Elizabeth marries clever, strong-willed Darcy.

Now, it’s not that they don’t have same-gender associations! Elizabeth’s vivacity and vanity can look like Mrs Bennet’s and Lydia’s, and she herself eventually notices this. Darcy looks up to his father, considering him more benevolent and amiable than his mother, and is described as similar to him by Mrs Reynolds, at the point where Elizabeth’s sense of the Darcy—Lady Catherine link is fading. At the end of the day, Elizabeth is far closer to Charlotte and Jane than Darcy is, and Elizabeth’s rapport with Colonel Fitzwilliam is short of the constant intimacy between Fitzwilliam and Darcy, while Bingley is much closer to Darcy, his friend, than to Elizabeth, his love interest’s sister.

So I’m not saying it’s entirely the other way around, just that their personal qualities are not nearly as tightly associated with their genders as fandom sometimes treats them. Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s sense of affinity with others and the similarities highlighted by the novel cross gender lines as often as they stay within them, which I think undercuts the perception of them as these ultra-gendered beings reaching across a chasm of difference.

The 38-year-old super model and mother of two got candid about the personal struggles she endured after giving birth. In her new memoir,Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life, Bündchen confesses that she lost herself and had to learn how to adjust her life as a mom. “When I became a mom, I kind of lost myself. It was like a part of me died,” she says in an excerpt shared by People. “I’d been this very independent person. It was all about me. But now I had this little being, and I suddenly felt l couldn’t do other things and that was very hard for me. All I ever wanted was to be a mom, but when you’re actually experiencing that, it’s a shock." Bündchen and husband Tom Brady welcomed their son Benjamin, 8, in 2009 and daughter Vivian, 5, in 2012. My Favourite Hair & Makeup (Part 2)

Happy Sunday! 

My second blog in this series is Rebecca’s wedding, that had taken place at The Bond in Birmingham City Centre on Fazeley street, right next to the canal. 

I also met Rebecca at ‘The All about Ewe’ Alternative Wedding Fair that was held at the Bond. She is a talented writer and performer and is used to having her hair and makeup done, so I had to up the amp for her own wedding.

The Inspiration 

Rebecca wanted a nod to the 50s, so this was my opportunity to flex my love of this era and revamp her into a 50s starlet. 

The Venue

Another part of my job I really love is finding out all about the history of the lovely wedding venues and the surrounding areas I am incredibly lucky enough to visit. 

The Bond is a unique group of beautifully restored industrial buildings, the largest building was a Gasworks between 1837 and 1875. All located next to the Grand Union Canal with it’s striking gated entrance and cobbled courtyard, it is a perfect venue for an urban wedding.

In 1156 Birmingham becomes a trading hub, the attraction to settling in Digbeth was how close it was to the River Rea, for easy access to drinking water and irrigation for crops. In 1368 the Old Crown opens, this is one of the oldest buildings in Birmingham and is a central hub for Digbeths’s community.

In 1643 Digbeth becomes really important during the English Civil war producing thousands of swords for Parliamentarian armies and then in late 1790’s it is named the “first manufacturing town in the world”.

In 1837 Birds eye custard is born, this stays operational in Birmingham until 1960 and the factory also supported British armed forces in World War 1.  Then in 1993 funding is secured to restore the Custard Factory into offices and small businesses, the area continues to thrive with amazing restaurants, music venues and small independent businesses.

Hair and Makeup

Rebeccas makeup was simple but glamorous with a light antique gold eyeshadow and flicked black classic liner teamed with lots of eyelashes and a blueberry sorbet shade lipstick, a dusting of bronzer and a light shimmering champagne highlighter on the tops of the cheekbones finished the look. 

I curled Rebeccas hair into large curls and then pinned them to set so the curls would be structured and last longer. I wanted a firm quiff too so the pin curls were pinned in the same direction in that area to create height. 

After I had finished the bridesmaid’s hair and makeup and Rebecca’s makeup it was time to style her hair.

I took out the pin curls and tried not to disturb them, I pinned the back of the hair into a gibson roll and then backcombed the hair at the crown to create height, I separated the front quiff and added extra hair at the front and brushed this out to create a soft wave that would then flow into the gibson roll at the back. 

She looked amazing and oozed Hollywood glamour!

The bridesmaids had very simple makeup with a blended winged brown eyeliner and golden lids teamed with a soft bubblegum pink lip. One of the bridesmaids had a large beehive and a halo braids and the other bridesmaid has soft brushed out waves.

I also did Rebecca’s lovely mommys makeup, she was wearing a pale pastel pink so we kept the makeup really simple and focused on a fresh looking healthy skin and a nice pretty watermelon pink lip.

I also had the pleasure of meeting lovely Simon Brettel who’s photo is below.

Rebecca’s dress was by Caroline Catigliano and the stunning necklace was her Nanny’s 21st Birthday present from the 1950’s.

Again I had such a wonderful morning spending time with these lovely people and I just have the best time at each and every wedding.
