blog post 4 | research
While there are several avenues of research I might explore for this essay, such as how to improve colorwork knitting or the history of the Norwegian Olympic sweaters, I have decided to focus on the studies that produce evidence of how beneficial knitting is to one's mental health.
In a study done by a PhD student, Joanna Nordstrand, results showed that the benefits one's mental health by engaging in meditation, which can decrease anxiety and depression. It gives one confidence in one's creative ability, a sense of identity through occupation, mental stimulation which helps reduce symptoms of dementia and ADHD and challenges the brain, and problem solving skills.
There are also benefits found in joining the knitting community by introducing one to a "low-stakes" social environment where everyone can work or share their craft without the pressure of job status, hierarchal positions, or other social stigmas.
Being occupied with a task not only yields a sense of accomplishment, but it also provides a system of structure in one's life by being a designated time and space for one to relax, focus, and take a break from other life stressors. It can play a role in one's long-term gratification by motivating one to complete other daily chores or less-meaningful activities in order to have more knitting time. The tactile experience of working with the yarn offers a pleasant sensory experience that is both calming and engaging.
While many forms of creativity are similarly healing to the mind and used in the therapeutic field, knitting is one of the few that can be done discreetly in public without disturbing anyone nearby. It is quiet, easy to transport, and calming for those with social anxiety as it can provide a temporary reprieve from social engagement such as prolonged eye contact and small talk.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this study is the segment in which researchers discuss how knitters choose to challenge themselves with different types of new skills. The preferred level of difficulty varies from person to person, day to day. Often when one has more stress, more knitting is required to relax, but mindless operations are preferred.
I would like to further this research by relating it to how the Nordic way of living promotes slow and mindful habits, such as knitting, to practice gratitude and find inner peace every day. The time and mental energy I have spent on this craft varies greatly over time, and there have been some minor disappointments such as unsuccessful projects or financial impediments, but overall it has been the most worthwhile pursuit of art I have found in benefitting my mental health and quality of life.
Here is the study:
I hope everyone's research is going well for this blog post! Thank you for reading if you made it this far (:

I was tagged by @bbqchipsandhs to share 12 facts about myself so here goes!
I definitely 100% believe in ghosts. We have a ghost in my condo and where I worked was also haunted and the school I go to bought buildings from an old asylum and built classrooms in them so my life is one big episode of ghost hunters
I love mythology in general but I especially love those, like, modern day mythology posts, and also greek god AUs which are basically the best
I’m finally watching the office for the first time and Jim and Pam’s love story is basically the greatest thing of all time
My favourite halloween costume of my whole life was when I dressed up as sailor moon when I was seven and I’m pretty sure I still have the costume somewhere
I have seen inception so many times and I still don’t fully understand it (also is the end a dream? Is it A DREAM???)
I have a typing speed of 85 wpm (I had to do a test today for class and discovered this! Highest in the class!)
I’m teaching myself Python but I get really confused with the syntax of loops so I’m pretty sure I’ll never fully learn it but I’m having fun anyway :)
I really want to start a bookstagram but I am highly intimidated by instagram in general so who knows if that will ever happen
I love HGTV, it is my happy place when I’m stressed, and I’ve seen every episode of Fixer Upper because Chip and Joanna Gaines are two of my favourite people on the planet
I am a knitter and I’m currently making myself a blanket made of squares with fandom pattens and I’m literally knitting a dancing groot square right now
I want to plant some little succulents in my room but I’ve never successfully kept a plant alive
There is a J Crew sweater that’s baby blue with a chicken wearing a beret on the front and I saw it at a J Crew outlet years ago and was tempted to buy it but didn’t and I have regretted it every single day since then
And that’s 12 facts about me! I’m going to tag @leesh @deathcab4harry @liambaeyne @stylesprimes and @worrieswillescape if you’re up for it!

Koigu at Web’s Knitting Retreat
This past weekend, Taiu (Co-owner) and Joanna (Manager), travelled to the Webs Knitting Retreat in Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. Over the three days they had the opportunity to meet and knit with 120+ knitters and crocheters from all over the United States.
Friday Morning Koigu sponsored breakfast, where Taiu gave a talk on a brief history of the Koigu History as well as information on some of the most famous garments by Maie Landra. Retreaters had the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of Koigu’s most popular garments including: the Oriental Jacket, Viking and Gypsy.
Retreater’s throughout the weekend took classes from world famous designers and teachers, including: Susan B. Anderson, Anne Hanson, Olga Buraya-Kefelian, Josh Bennett, Franklin Habit. Each meal was sponsored by a different Yarn company, and retreaters had a chance to hear from many other excellant speakers.
At the end of the retreat, retreaters had the opportunity to shop in the Webs store, with reps and trunk shows from many fabulous yarn companies. Taiu and Joanna had a fabulous time showing off some of Koigu’s most beautiful garments as well as helping pick the best colours for new projects!
For more information on this year’s retreat visit Web’s. Look out for more information in the future on Web’s 2018 retreat!
