Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, during the Franco-Mexican War. The day is a minor, regional holiday in Mexico, being mainly celebrated in the state of Puebla where the city of Puebla is the capital. Although, during this time, the United States was preoccupied with the Civil War, giving France more of an opportunity to do as it pleased.

In late 1861, French forces landed at Veracruz and put Juárez and his government on the run. 6,000 French troops, under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez, planned an attack at Puebla de Los Ángeles, a town 80 miles southeast of Mexico City, and were optimistic about its outcome. Juárez was stationed just north of there and sent 2,000 (by some accounts 4,000) men to Puebla. Poorly supplied and outnumbered, they were led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. They fortified the town and got ready for French.

On May 5, 1862, the French attacked the town, and the battle lasted from morning until night. They lost between 500 to 1,000 soldiers, while Mexico lost less than 100. After the battle ended, the French retreated to the Gulf Coast. It was not a strategic win for Mexico but was a symbolic victory and morale booster. General Zaragoza died a few months later, and the town was renamed Puebla de Zaragoza. France's leader, Napoleon III, the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, installed Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian as emperor of Mexico in 1864. He was executed by Juárez's forces in 1867. France withdrew from Mexico the same year.

How to Observe

Check to see what is taking place near where you live. In Puebla, there is a museum dedicated to the battle, and the battlefield is a park. A reenactment, replete with rifle and cannon shots, takes place in Puebla on the day, and it ends with a sword fight between the Mexican and French generals. #throwbackthursday From my trip to #California in 2015, this is the Casa de Estudillo, also known as the Estudillo House, in San Diego. This adobe home was constructed in 1827 by José María Estudillo and his son José Antonio Estudillo, early settlers of San Diego, and was considered one of the finest houses in Mexican California. The house gained notoriety as a tourist attraction because of Helen Hunt Jackson's 1884 novel "Ramona." A local newspaper claimed it was the location of Ramona's marriage (and coincidentally the house matched the description in the book). However, Jackson had never visited the home and it was just a work of fiction. The home, now restored, is part of Old Town San Diego State Historic Site. Hijo del obrero barnizador Rafael Ballester Ponce de León y de Mercedes Tinoco Galindo. Fue el hijo mayor de su familia y tuvo cuatro hermanas (Rafaela, Rosa, Carmela y Magdalena). Tras estudiar en el colegio de los frailes salesianos del barrio de La Viña donde vivía, empezó a trabajar aún niño como barnizador con su padre y luego como ebanista y carpintero, profesión que mantendrá el resto de su vida. Hacia 1920, influenciado por José Bonati, comenzó a militar en el movimiento anarquista y se integró en el grupo «Fermín Salvochea». 1922 intervino por primera vez en un mitin en Cádiz y representó los libertarios gaditanos en la reunión clandestina de El Arahal. El año siguiente fue nombrado vicepresidente del Ateneo Obrero y participó en el grupo editor de la revista Alba Roja. En 1924, en plena dictadura de Primo de Rivera, presidió el Sindicato de la Construcción de la Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) de Cádiz e hizo mítines en la ciudad. 1926 ingresó en la Logia Masónica Salvochea.

En 1927 se casó con Ramona Sierra Estudillo, con quien tendrá cinco niños (Aurora, Rafael, Joaquín, José y Antonio). Ese mismo año fue uno de los reorganizadores del Comité Pro Presos y 1928 participó en el grupo anarquista "Germinal", con José Bonati, Elías García, José Lucero y Clemente de Galeno. En 1929 fue detenido por primera vez en Jerez y permaneció cerrado un mes y medio. En 1930 fue nombrado vicepresidente del Ateneo de Estudios Sociales y en junio de ese año representó la Logia Masónica Salvochea en una asamblea en Madrid, pero abandonó la francmasonería raíz de la Conferencia de Sindicatos de Sevilla de octubre de aquel año . Con la caída de la dictadura su figura pasó a primer plano y fue nombrado secretario del Sindicato de la Madera de Cádiz; representante gaditano en la Conferencia de Sindicatos Sevilla de 1930; miembro del Comité de Huelga gaditano en 1931, que lo llevó a la prisión en noviembre; delegado al Congreso de 1931 representa el Sindicato de la Madera de Cádiz y la Conferencia Regional Andaluza; secretario del Comité Regional de Andalucía de la CNT en 1932; miembro, con Rafael Peña García y Juan Arcas Moreda, del Comité Revolucionario andaluz de 1933 y por el que, a raíz de los hechos de Casas Viejas, fue cerrado ese año en Sevilla y Puerto Real; delegado en el Congreso andaluz de agosto de 1934 por Cádiz; secretario de la CNT de Andalucía 1934 en plena escisión treintista ; reorganizador, con Manuel Pérez, de la CNT de Cádiz en junio de 1935; representante del Comité Regional de Andalucía en el Congreso de Zaragoza de 1936 y en el que habló en el mitin de clausura; secretario de la Federación Local de Cádiz el julio de 1936; etc. Durante los años republicanos participó en numerosos mítines y conferencias (Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Zaragoza, Teruel, Santa Eulalia, Sevilla, Logroño, Paterna, Huesca, comarcas gaditanas, etc.) Y fue encarcelado numerosas veces (octubre 1931, 1933 y después de la revolución asturiana de octubre de 1934).
