#JamesDonaldson On #MentalHealth – #LGBTQ #Youth: Discrimination #Trauma May Increase #SuicideRisk By More Than 3 Times
Tumblr media
#LGBTQ+ #youth may experience different levels of #trauma that impact their #mentalhealth. Photo by Sharon McCutcheon on Pexels.com - A recent report has found that #LGBTQ #youth who have experienced high levels of #trauma are over three times more likely to attempt #suicide. - More than one in three young #LGBTQ people experienced such levels of #trauma in the last year. - The highest levels of #trauma were felt by #trans and #nonbinary #youth compared to #LGBTQ #cisgender young people. The #TrevorProject has released its latest report #LGBTQ #Youth #MentalHealth revealing relevant relationships between the trauma experienced by #LGBTQ #youth and #suicide. This year’s report found that #LGBTQ #youth who reported a high degree of #trauma were greater than three times more likely to have attempted #suicide in the past year compared to those reporting no or moderate levels of #trauma. Just 4% of #LGBTQ #youth reported having never experienced #trauma. More than one in three, or 37%, ages 13 to 24 reported high levels of #trauma. A quarter of those who experienced such levels of #trauma had attempted #suicide in the last year. Nearly half, or 44%, of #transgender and #nonbinary young people reported high levels of #trauma, compared to #cisgender #LGBTQ #youth. Dr. Myeshia Price, senior research scientist at The #TrevorProject, told Medical News Today: “As the very existence of #LGBTQ #youth continues being debated publicly and regularly — both by lawmakers and across media — it’s imperative we highlight the impacts that #trauma-inducing experiences such as discrimination, harassment, and violence can have on the #mentalhealth of #LGBTQ young people.” Taking the pulse of #LGBTQ #youth Between September and December 2021, 33,993 young #LGBTQ people, 13-24 years old and residing in the USA, participated in the #TrevorProject’s 2022 National Survey on #LGBTQ #Youth #MentalHealth. Participants were asked to rate the following four statements as “never, rarely, sometimes, or often”: - “Due to experiences in my life, I often feel on guard or easily scared, especially around certain people or places.” - “Due to experiences in my life, I often have nightmares or think about things when I do not want to.” - “Due to experiences in my life, I often feel afraid as if something awful might happen.” - “Due to experiences in my life, I feel the world is an unsafe place.” The #CenterforDiseaseControl’s #Youth Risk #Behavior Survey Surveillance SystemTrusted Source provided the basis for additional questions regarding #suicideattempts and thoughts. Support needed in #schools Melanie Willingham-Jaggers, executive director of GLSEN which was founded by #teachers committed to “creating affirming learning environments for #LGBTQ #youth,” told MNT that the findings highlight a growing problem. “Our research shows that #LGBTQ+ #youth who face hostile #school climates where they’re denied access to supportive educators and inclusive curriculum are more likely to skip #school because they feel unsafe, have lower GPAs and academic achievement, and report less of a sense of belonging in #school.”— Melanie Willingham-Jaggers, executive director of GLSEN “These impacts exacerbate the already high rates of #mentalhealthissues that #queer #youth are facing,” said Willingham-Jaggers, who was not involved in the report. A traumatizing national climate What exacerbates the #mentalhealth of #LGBTQ #youth further is also the current political climate. “These findings cannot be viewed without the context in which they were collected,” said Dr. Price, explaining: “This year, we have witnessed a record number of anti-#LGBTQ bills introduced in states across the country. These bills, and the ugly rhetoric surrounding them, have taken a toll on the #mentalhealth of #LGBTQ #youth — and #transgender and #nonbinary #youth in particular.” “Recent polling found that 85% of #trans and #nonbinary #youth — and two-thirds of all #LGBTQ #youth — said debates around anti-#transgender laws have negatively impacted their #mentalhealth,” Dr. Price told MNT. “#LGBTQ #youth report feeling scared, stressed, nervous, and a number of other emotions in response to these harmful policies.”— Dr. Myeshia Price Willingham-Jaggers also cited a troubling connection: “These curriculum censorship bills are aligned with bans on discussions of #race and #racial justice, and only further shame and harass #Black #queer #students, who are already some of our most persecuted and marginalized #youth.” The #TrevorProject’s report found higher levels of #trauma among #LGBTQ #youthofcolor, with the greatest levels experienced by Native/Indigenous #LGBTQ and Middle Eastern/Northern African #LGTBQ #youth. #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space.  #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleOrder your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife:From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com What #parents can do “Research has consistently found,” said Dr. Price, “that when #LGBTQ #youth feel supported and affirmed in their identities, their odds of attempting #suicide can lower significantly.” “Our recent research found that something as simple as #parents talking with #youth respectfully about their #LGBTQ identity can be associated with more than 40% lower odds of attempting #suicide in the past year. The #TrevorProject’s Guide to Being an Ally to #Transgender and #Nonbinary #Youth is a great place to start for learning best practices for supporting #trans and #nonbinary young people in particular,” she said. “Given its potentially life-saving impact, #parents should create affirming and supportive homes for their #LGBTQ #children — and they don’t have to be experts in #LGBTQ topics and identities to do so.”— Dr. Myeshia Price “We encourage #parents to combat anti-#LGBTQ+ rhetoric in our #schools and communities by expressing solidarity at local school board meetings, voting, or supporting your local GSA or advocacy group,” Willingham-Jaggers added. She also pointed out: “We can all contribute to the movement for justice by urging our representatives to take bold, proactive steps to support and protect #LGBTQ+ #students and invest in inclusive education.” Finding hope in a worrying report Despite the grim reality, Willingham-Jaggers also acknowledges the strides made for the health and well-being of the #LGBTQ community. “In recent years, the #LGBTQ+ movement has made incredible strides establishing nondiscrimination protections for #LGBTQ+ people, as well as achieving more diverse representation in our #schools and communities,” she said. However, she pointed out that “this progress and increasing visibility for our community has sparked a backlash from conservative extremists.” Dr. Price also said that headlines may not accurately reflect the real public opinion when it comes to #LGBTQ policies. “It is important to remember that the anti-#LGBTQ politics we see in the news are largely out of step with the reality of public opinion. Our latest polling suggests that voters in states like Florida and Texas, where we have seen especially harmful legislation, are actually less likely to support candidates that promote these anti-#LGBTQ policies,” she said. “Our community is resilient. We’ve made progress that we once thought impossible, and we can — and must — do it again, for the safety of our #children.”— Melanie Willingham-Jaggers Photo by Sharon McCutcheon on Pexels.com Read the full article

In the wake of the corona virus it is important to note that under Trump, the Center for Disease Control’s budget for epidemic prevention activities was cut 80%.
This is an emergency response system in countries where disease risks are greatest.
The CDC under Trump is cutting its efforts to deal with virus outbreaks in 39 out of 49 countries.
Policies matter and presidents matter and this president doesn’t have as a priority meeting the dangers of a virus like corona

Please read. And remember - the vaccine might prevent hospitalization and death - but it can’t completely prevent possible longterm damage from reinfection. So keep protecting yourself and others. Public health is more important than the economy, because the economy can bounce back. Your vascular system may not. And the lives of those who are immunocompromised are being wantonly endangered by the lifting of mask mandates indoors. #Repost @seastersjones with @make_repost ・・・ 🧵 Please read. #covid19 #cdc #centerfordiseasecontrol #coronavirus #longcovid #publichealth #thepandemicisnotover #pandemic #wearyourmask #wearamask #maskup #covidvaccine #ɢᴇᴛᴠᴀᴄᴄɪɴᴀᴛᴇᴅ https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca93h-aOC8d/?utm_medium=tumblr

#JamesDonaldson On #MentalHealth – #China Sees #Suicide Rise Among Young Facing #School Pressure
Tumblr media
- Nation’s disease control center urges tailored intervention - China’s young deal with fierce competition academically Photo by Seng Lam Ho on Pexels.com By Yihui Xie and Xiao Zibang #China has seen an increase in #suicides among young people in recent years, prompting researchers to call for a special program to help them deal with academic pressure. The number of #children aged five to 14 that died by #suicide jumped nearly 10% annually from 2010 to 2021, according to a recent study from the #Chinese #CenterforDiseaseControlandPrevention. The figure for people aged 15 to 24 fell 7% through 2017 then posted a nearly 20% increase the next four years.  The increase is small in absolute numbers yet it contrasts with a decline of 5.3% annually in the 2010-2021 period among all age groups in the country, a drop the researchers said was due to a nationwide #mentalhealthprogram. They said that #children and #adolescents have faced severe #mentaldisorders and elevated #suiciderisks from intense competition to do well at #school. Half of people suffering from #depressivedisorder in #China are #students, according to a 2022 national survey.  The researchers called on the government to prioritize developing programs targeting #children and #adolescents that adopt best practices from abroad and allow for the early identification of #suicidalbehavior. Young people in #China have long engaged in fierce competition to get ahead in #school and get good jobs upon graduation. Three years of the #Covid-19 #pandemic — which in #China meant snap lockdowns, including many imposed on #college campuses — and record #youth unemployment have also piled pressure on #youth. Earlier this year, the apparent #suicide of a boarding #school #student named Hu Xinyu gained widespread attention in #China, both because the 15-year-old boy had expressed concern beforehand about his grades and how the #police handled their investigation.  Also, many people took to #Chinese #socialmedia Thursday to express sadness over the death of #HongKong-born singer and songwriter #CocoLee. The 48-year-old had been suffering from #depression for several years, her sisters said in a statement posted on #Facebook. One person wrote on Weibo that “Coco’s passing is also a wake-up call for us to take our #mentalhealth seriously.” #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Viral Potpourri
As a devoted hypochondriac I have been the proverbial nervous wreck during this COVID-19 pandemic, and some of the things I do to avoid getting the virus drive my poor wife crazy. For example, if we absolutely have to go out in the car, I wear a mask, and take one of my large containers of Lysol. (I bought 200 cans of it from Amazon when the virus first hit.) I like to drive with the window down, and so I steer with my right hand and spray a steady stream of Lysol out the window with my left. This way the disinfectant constantly blows back into my face so that I’m always breathing uncontaminated air. Yes I know the virus is not supposed to be carried on the air, but one can never be too careful. And what if I pass a motorist who happens sneeze to out the window just as I happen by? BUT I DRAW THE LINE AT INJECTING MYSELF WITH ANY TYPE OF CLEANING FLUID OR DISINFECTANT. Although she tolerates the Lysol-out-the-window bit, my wife did draw the line the other day when she caught me dumping a bag of groceries into the washing machine. I argued that each item had its own wrapper, and thus this was much quicker than wiping down things separately. She ultimately persuaded me not to push the “heavy wash” cycle button when she pointed out that the wash agitator probably would crush the eggs and that an egg and Tide omelet didn’t sound particularly appetizing. She also perceptively noted that the spin cycle would sap all the juice out of the English roast of beef. Oh well, you win some, and you lose some.

Hand sanitizer is being used now more than ever.
Opening Up?
In addition to perpetuating an obsession for cleanliness, this pandemic has elicited some unusual behavior that borders on insanity. One of the main things we are supposed to be doing in order to get a harness on this damn virus is practice social distancing – stay at least six feet away from other people at all times. So what do we see coming out of Virginia, Michigan, and Minnesota, but pictures of people protesting the stay-at-home orders, and in doing so they were not practicing social distancing. And who was cheering on these protesters via tweets calling for the liberation of those states? President Donald Trump, whose guidelines called for social distancing. And an example of what I consider terminal stupidity occurred last week in Georgia, where Gov. Brian Kemp said he was partially reopening the state by allowing bowling alleys, fitness centers, tattoo parlors, barbers, hairstyling salons, and massage therapy places to open their doors again. Can you imagine getting a haircut in a barbershop practicing social distancing? I can foresee all manner of horrible accidents occurring while the barbers attempt to master using six-foot long scissors. And just picture the needles tattoo artists would have to use! Merely thinking about them gives me chills. Now Georgia also has several large amusement parks, but I didn’t see anything about whether or not they would be open. Just think how hard it would be to practice social distancing there.  Roller coasters would have one person to a car, and couples wishing to go into the tunnel of love would have to enter one at a time. And wouldn’t it be fun to ride the bumper cars without being able to run into anyone? Incidentally, at this writing the state of Georgia had more than 21,491 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on a steadily increasing rate. With those statistics in mind, it’s difficult to understand Kemp’s desire to begin reopening his state.
The Beach?
Here’s just one more question to ponder: How in the hell do you practice social distancing on a beach? Here’s how. The beaches are open at only certain hours of the day, and the lifeguards will be responsible for enforcing various guidelines that include no coolers, chairs, blankets, towels, or grills. It’s okay to swim and surf, but sunbathing is prohibited. This means that I can go in and bounce around in the ocean, but when I come out, I won’t be allowed to eat or drink anything, I’ll have no place to sit down, and the sun and wind will need to dry me off. Doesn’t sound like much of a day at the beach to me, but the clips I’ve seen on the news showed beaches without much evidence of social distancing. From what I’ve read, a number of people in Georgia think returning to work this soon is a bad idea. On the other hand, the protesters and beachgoers don’t seem to care about potentially exacerbating the spread of COVID-19 by ignoring social distancing. The more I read, hear, and see, the more I wonder whether I’m one of the few (including my family and a handful of friends) people of sound mind left in the world or whether everyone else has more fun throwing caution to the wind. (Sorry for the cliché, but it really fit there.) I’ve never been much of a protester, and although I’ve had a lifelong love affair with the beach, I wouldn’t go near one right now. Instead I’ll opt to stay home until I can be damn sure it’s safe to leave, and I’ll keep always at my side my faithful companion – a can of Lysol. Stay home. Wash your hands. Don’t touch your face. If you absolutely must go out in public, wear a mask and practice social distancing. And stay well! Read the full article
