Chaco Canyon is one of the most inaccessible National Parks in the country. Although it is well-known, there is no easy way to get there and there are no amenities once you arrive. The closest town is 60 miles away. There’s a gas station on the main road, near where you turn off on Highway 550. That’s the last opportunity for gas, water, snacks, sunscreen and supplies.
Furthermore, there is no good road to Chaco Canyon. Bluntly, it feels like an Indiana Jones expedition the moment you turn off the main road. The jolting journey evolves from a deceivingly decent dirt road to not so good to face rattling off your skull for a couple of miles. Also, there's a large wash on the way, which can become impassable during heavy storms. Don’t be daring, because there’s no cell phone reception either.

Culture Salado

Happy #NewYearsEve from the deep heart of the #AmericanSouthwest. I’ll be spending my last day of 2020 at the @heardmuseum today in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona, with my brother, @JoeCow, enjoying music by various #Native musicians. Living in Phoenix going on for 1.5 years now and the adventure is just beginning! Image was captured respectfully at #ChacoCanyon. Traveling back to the heat of the Sonoran Desert today. Here's a quick shot of a cool character enjoying the heat of the Chihuaua Desert on the lip of Chaco Canyon. Based on the coloring, I think this is a male collared lizard. #thetattooedtrowel #thepastispresent #andthepresentisinhabited #chacocanyon (at Chaco Culture National Historical Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B054ZvpggSN/?igshid=1srsscofcekcg

Petroglyphs 1, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, NM
Definitely some shenanigans going on here. On the left you have one guy jumping over the other’s spiky hair. To the far right, definitely flipping the bird. Being that Chaco Canyon was a hub of ancient civilization over 1000 years ago, there’s probably a more spiritual meaning than a bunch of figures playing grab-ass.

Unexpected bucket list item checked off: Photographing wild horses in a snowstorm. Only got a few frames off, but - WOW. What an experience! You know how when you're in a snowstorm and you hear nothing, no sound at all? That was the scene. We had woken up to sunshine at Chaco Canyon and 30 minutes later, it was almost a whiteout with snow! We gave up our planned petroglyph hike and hurriedly packed up and took off. Along the road (26 miles from the highway, partial dirt and washboard) we came across a group of wild horses, covered in snow, just grazing. I couldn't believe the sight, it was so peaceful.....I felt like I was in a movie. #chacocanyon #hiking #newmexico #justgo #chaco #wildhorses #wildhorsesofinstagram #snowstorm #random #traveler #newmexico #newmexicolove #travel (at Chaco Canyon National Historic Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuGGpBOFVi8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d20rqnq25ooe
