Oh good God for chapter 218 of "Vinland Saga". Fuck, fuck, fuck...
Einar's dead, I just... can't even believe. I'm so heartbroken.
I thought for a while now that there had to be some heavy price to pay for Thorfinn, something huge he would have to lose for the sake of his pacifism. I imagined maybe there would be a rift which would form between Thorfinn and Einar that would be unbridgeable, but I never imagined it would end like this. Truly, I underestimated Yukimura, because I didn't at all anticipate that Einar might actually die like this, and at Styrk's hand, of all people. I mean, I really almost started crying reading this chapter. I'm honestly at a loss for words.
What the hell is Thorfinn going to do now? The war seems to be at an end, but Thorfinn really has paid the heaviest price here, and it's so unfair. He tried so hard to prevent all of this, and it really is the ultimate condemnation of war, that he's lost his first and truest friend to it. What a devastating loss. I think this is so much worse, even, than if he'd lost his wife and infant child. Einar was the one that pulled Thorfinn out of his own despair and gave him back his life. Einar is the one that gave Thorfinn a newfound sense of purpose, a reason to forge on. The one who helped him become the man he now is. And now he's gone, and for literally no fucking reason. Does anything demonstrate the uselessness of war more than this? The loss of a good and decent man, with nothing gained? Man, I'm getting choked up writing this out. And then, God, Einar's final words to Thorfinn, too, wondering what Arnheid would think of him, knowing he's killed a man. Seeing Einar die with regret consuming him, with guilt and self-loathing... God, I can't think of a more devastating ending than that. Thorfinn is going to be destroyed.
What makes it all so much sadder is that Einar finally understood why Thorfinn fought so hard against violence and war, finally understood the weight Thorfinn has carried all these years. In finally killing a man himself, he at last understood the inescapable horror of it, and in trying to uphold Thorfinn's commitment to pacifism, Einar paid with his life. That right there, then, is the price Thorfinn must pay for rejecting violence outright. Not with his own life, but with the life of his greatest friend.
I was always scared that "Vinland Saga" might conclude without us ever seeing Thorfinn having to make a true sacrifice for his ideals, but now he's experienced the ultimate sacrifice. Not one of his own choosing, but as a result of his commitment to those ideals, nonetheless. And in an indirect way, Thorfinn's continued insistence on his pacifism led to Einar's death, when he tries to stay Hild's hand in shooting Styrk to put him down. If Thorfinn hadn't called out to Hild, maybe there wouldn't have been enough time for Styrk to strike Einar. And if Thorfinn hadn't expressed and practiced his rejection of violence so strongly to Einer, maybe Einar never would have tried to stop Styrk in the first place. Maybe there wouldn't have been so much contention between him and Einar at the start of this whole thing, with Einar feeling such a powerful need to break from Thorfinn's refusal to fight for what they'd built. Maybe if Thorfinn had shown to the people under his care that he could fight, Ivar never would have felt the need to intervene and cut off the shaman's hand, and hostility never would have broken out between the Nords and the Lnu. At the same time, if everyone had just listened to Thorfinn and left Vinland peacefully, all of these people would still be alive, including Einar himself. So it's such a complicated issue that simply can't be broken down into any sort of obvious right or wrong answer. All of these things have contributed to this outcome. Both Thorfinn's uncompromising commitment to pacifism, and the warring nature of man, both are responsible for Einar's death. It's a bizarre and painful paradox, that both violence and pacifism are to blame for this outcome.
What an awful, awful tragedy.
This truly has to be the greatest loss of Thorfinn's life. Maybe even greater than the loss of his father.
And all of this could have been avoided if everyone had just agreed to leave like Thorfinn originally wanted. Styrk never would have lost Ivar, and so never would have been lost to his own grief and despair, and Einar never would have known the horror of taking another man's life, and never would have been forced to keep Styrk from reigniting the war. And Thorfinn never would have been robbed of his best friend.
Just, damn... I'm not gonna' get over this one, man. I really can't say anymore.
I'm gonna' go to my room and cry my eyes out now.

Robin I'm sorry I didn't like you before, you are great!!!
Usopp interviewing her was funny
I wonder what she will do to convince Zoro she is on their side
In the moment Sanji is the character I most dislike
Uh nice that she not only lied to Crocodile but saved Luffy!!!
Oh she crying because hee dream has too many enemies!!!
Why is the government trying to arrest a little go who wants to know the true story, what is this by the way? (New piece of lore)
Island in the sky, you know what that means? The arc I didn't like is here
Wow the falling ship was tense
Luffy accepted Robin so fast
