Gran Canaria
I think you'd like Gran Canaria The palm trees sway in the morning breeze, and pat your cheeks comfortingly. Before the sun rises, the skies are painted in technicolour; a bridge to our other 6 siblings. And when she does peek her head up, all are humbled beneath her. Forced to seek a cool lagoon, or the refuge of the cacti bush shadow. For if you disobey, if you dare not curtsy before her, every part of your being will be burnt up. Every ache, every pain, every tear that falls on the dusty ground gets eaten up by her light. True equality can't be found too often, but at least the sun makes us all bow.
When Autumn comes, it's not much of a respite not in the daytime at least. But when the sun sinks down, and the children come out to play, you can walk in the street and feel the cooling atmosphere And maybe if you're near La Isleta you'll smell that sweet scent of blueberries and volcanic soil. Maybe you'll slip out of bed and out the front door, and perhaps you will follow through the twisting streets, that slowly ascend up up up a left then a right along the shoreline until we reach the edge of civilisation. The one North road out the city; the midnight path.
Because if you do follow me, if you do take that road; decorated in enredaderas de papel, You'll eventually pass the military base adorned with ripe cacti fruit. And if you stray from the asphalt, and let the dust paint your skin, and climb up once more up past the caves up a little more up You'll find a place not too many travel to, maybe it's because of its precarious route or simply that this Island is valued more for its tourist nightlife of cheap beer and jet skis on Europe's favourite holiday Island
But if you follow me to that place, if you reach the top of the mountain, in the shadow of the crucifix, beneath a sea of stars, if you turn, from the chatter of the glowing capital in the South, to the chug of boats of the Eastern harbor, to the anglers setting up their bait in the West, and the bustle of the most Northern village, This is the life you'll see at night, The true life of an Island, those within and without, on this wonderous volcanic African Island

21 - 28.01.23:
First Holiday of 2023: Gran Canaria
Our first diary entry on our first holiday for 3 years! Stayed overnight at Hollins Hall Hotel near LBA having checked in our luggage en route. Up early at 6.30 to reach car park on time for security etc. Breakfasted with friendly couple from Leeds Bramhope and then the long but smooth flight. C had cleverly booked us a direct taxi ride to Puerto Mogan which we shared with a mad Yorkshire lady - kind of aged hippy version - who told us she was none too well and had sold her house in favour of applying for a council house. Seems she is living it up on the 300K - staying for a month! Settled into our fab apartment overlooking a pool. We shopped at supermarket and afterwards enjoyed a chic Magnum each. Well why not on holiday!? Had snack and short rest then out for a fish dinner in a beachside bistro. Food only average but wine was fab: only €64 which is cheap. Staggered home and got lost in unfamiliar apartment block. Finally to sleep off all that wine - must restrict future intake we both pledge. But now we are here! Amazing to be in the sun! Oh boy!

5 reasons why Croatia is the best tennis vacation destination
If you’re looking for a tennis holiday destination, here’s why you should choose Croatia.
An introduction to Croatia - undiscovered tennis vacation paradise
What if I asked you – what makes a perfect tennis vacation destination for you?
Forget your standard of play for a moment. Or whether you are traveling on your own, with your significant other or with kids. Try to imagine - how does this perfect holiday haven look like?
Is it a fancy, large resort isolated from the every-day local life? Dozens of immaculate tennis courts, with a private, sandy beach? Am I missing palm trees and some cocktails from an all-inclusive bar nearby?
If you're nodding your head, I'd suggest you stop reading this article.
Just skip it.
This one is for tennis lovers who seek to truly enjoy their favorite game. In a sunny place, connecting with their immediate surrounding and people around them. Forget about the car and pack an extra pair of tennis shoes.
Experience Croatia, the best tennis vacations in Europe.
Tumblr media
You may have traveled to some of the world. Visited renowned tennis holiday destinations. Stayed in luxury resorts in Spain or Florida or enjoyed cheap tennis holidays. Or the immensely popular France, Turkey, Italy in the Mediterranean.
Let’s talk about Croatia in the context of tennis. Most of you will instantly think of Goran Ivanišević, 2001 Wimbledon champion. He is famous for his colorful and entertaining character.  If we're lucky, there might be some other names or tournaments held in Croatia mentioned.
Well, tennis in Croatia has a long and rich history and it is high time to put Croatia on the world’s tennis vacations map. Create some serious competition to Goran. And possibly outshine other tennis holiday destination beauties in the Mediterranean.
Tennis holidays in Italy? Portugal? Mallorca? Algarve? Nah, choose Croatia!
Tumblr media
Here are 5 reasons why Croatia is a superb a tennis holiday destination. Destination worthy of every bit of your attention.
1. Many tennis facilities across the stretched Croatian coast
There are many great tennis facilities across the stretched Croatian coast. Some of the hotels possess all the necessary infrastructure to blow off some steam on the court.
Croatians pride themselves on having many famous tennis players. Those players have contributed to the increased popularity of tennis as a sport. This is why you can find a tennis center in almost every coastal town. They welcome players of all ages and abilities and are open for residents and tourists. Often you might find yourself challenged by a local to take on a match and show what you know.
2. Red clay tennis courts in stunning natural settings
No matter where you land on the Croatian coast, two main colors will follow you. The rich palette of green vegetation and changing colors of the deep blue Adriatic sea. Some of the country’s best tennis courts lie in the most stunning natural surroundings. It's this idyllic landscape that allows you to enjoy the play with full senses.
Tumblr media
Beautiful tennis courts in Biograd, one of Tennis Holidays Croatia destinations
3. Behind every great tennis court lies an even greater beach
Walking to the courts to swing your racket, you’ll be tempted to skip the tennis sessions and hit the beach. You can also go to the beach to stretch for tennis, before or after the match. In Croatia the beaches are very friendly, inviting you to spend as much time as possible.
What makes them so appealing?
Well before you even set your feet on the warm, cozy pebble stones, you are simply immersed into the crystal clear blue color of the sea. It gets even better after taking a nice swim, drying in the warm sun and finding a perfect spot under the pine tree shadow.
Here’s one interesting thing about beaches in Croatia – they are public. Locals love the beach just as much as they love a cold beer at the beach bar.
There are also some private beaches as well, so if you are more ‘I love my privacy’ person, Croatia will deliver.
👉 Pasjaca beach in Cavtat has been voted as European Best Beach 2019!
Tumblr media
4. Walking distance is the signature
Are you one of those people who simply want to forget about the existence of any transporting vehicle while on holiday?
This is one of the very few days in the year you’d like to completely switch off and have everything you need within easy walking distance.
In the case of Croatia, easy walking distance is the signature. This is the part where you will need those extra pair of tennis shoes from the beginning of the article. Or any type of shoes, as long as they are comfortable.
Tennis resorts, if we can even call them like that in our case, are not isolated. They live in residential surroundings. You stay at the hotel. Walk to the tennis courts. Walk to the beach. Walk into town for dinner. And if you like – do some more walking along the coast.
Everything is so easy to reach, right there – on the palm of your hand.
5. Perfect tennis holiday destination goes beyond tennis
Passionate tennis players would say, the best moments of a tennis holiday are the ones spent on the court enjoying the game. Especially if they are winning.
Tennis play in here is seriously challenged by so many exciting opportunities you could follow.
Let’s get more specific.
If you choose to stay in Zadar Region, you will be tempted to visit 5 National and Nature parks, all within easy striking distance.
Let’s get even more specific.
Do you like sailing and swimming in the sea? Go for National Park Kornati.
Prefer hiking or rock climbing? National Park Paklenica is your thing.
Enjoy cycling? I would advise Nature Park Vransko Lake.
It gets slightly complicated with National Parks Plitvice Lakes and Krka Waterfalls. In both cases waterfalls are in question, so you need to decide which one you like better. Or just go with both.
Let’s conclude by saying there is plenty to miss out on if you decide to spend your entire tennis holiday on the courts.
The best way to end it is to say: It’s your holiday. Make everything you do your choice. In Croatia, there is plenty of choice. All you have to do is make a decision.
Tumblr media
And we believe this time you should skip all those places where everyone goes - Mallorca, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Cyprus, Corfu, Tuscany, Gran Canaria and choose Croatia as your tennis holidays destination!
Have any questions, or need help deciding the best tennis vacation programme for you? Contact Tennis Holidays Croatia here and we’ll prepare something awesome for you!
Or head out to Tennis Holidays Croatia website and browse our tennis vacations.
Question: What do you value most in a tennis vacation?

Getting Around Gran Canaria after Landing
So, you’ve decided that Gran Canaria should be your next destination for a vacation. There is, however, your issue: you do not want to bring your car with – nor do you want to rent a car. You are on a vacation – so you want to be able to enjoy that cocktail, without worrying that you have to get behind the wheel. Under any circumstances, drinking and driving is not good.
So, how do you get around in these cases? After all, Gran Canaria is fairly large – so it’s not like you can do it by foot. Not only will you waste a lot of time, but it will also kill your feet. Well, here are some ideas for that:
If you want to feel like a true local, you have to hop on the guagua (pronounced “waa waa”), which is the local bus, is a very organized commuting system – and not to mention a very cheap one. You can get around just about anywhere with the bus – from the airport to the hotel and your other public spots.
You may make a little more time than you would with a taxi – but imagine what you could do with the money that you save. You’d buy souvenirs, see more stuff, enjoy the cuisine – anything.
If you still don’t wasn’t to be driven around by anyone, you can also go with a rental car. You may rent them from a variety of places – such as the airport or the hotel. Prices generally depend on the car, so if you don’t want to drill a hole in your bank account, you may want to steer clear of the latest BMW.
Likely, the quickest way to grab transport from Gran Canaria airport to city center is if you hop in a taxi. No waiting time, no stopping at bus stops, no detouring to get at certain points in the city. You just get to your destination in record time, without wasting a second of it.
Let’s say that you are on a tight budget – but still don’t want to “dance” with the public bus. In this case, you may want to organize a shuttle that will take you to your accommodations.
Bear in mind that airport transfers from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) will take you around various other houses – so if you are short for time, you should pick one with fewer stops. In this aspect, research is key.
As a tourist, you can also use the ferry to take you places. They are fairly inexpensive, and they will take you to your destination without taking any detours. You will just have to follow the stream – and sometimes, they are even quicker than taxis.
A holiday to the Gran Canaria can be a blessing, considering the beauty of the place. However, for your vacation to be pleasant, you need to organize your means of transportation beforehand. After all, Gran Canaria is a grand place.

The Canary Island Cuisine: Eat like the Canaries do…..
Tumblr media
It is a HUGE must, that you add the following to your itinerary when scheduling an excursion to the Canary Islands:
EAT as much as you can!!!
To be honest, that should be at the top of your To-Do list if you’re travelling anywhere! But in the Canaries, you probably shouldn’t leave without trying out their cuisine.
Apart from the warm sunny beaches, the highlight is the food in the Canaries. Warning: it’s extremely possible that I might say that about any destination 😉
These dishes caught my eye and my cravings – well mostly because I couldn’t resist and because it was something new & unusual.
In no particular order, here are the best dishes you need to try in the Canary Islands
Papas Arrugadas Con Mojo
Tumblr media
You say potatoes, they say ‘papas’… These potatoes are nothing like the ones we eat at home. The volcanic earth and climate in which they are grown produce smaller potatoes with a distinct taste & texture and taste. Known as “Wrinkled potatoes”, boiled with the skin in saltwater until soft, leaving the potatoes with wrinkles and with a salty crust, dressed with a generous topping of mojo picón – a delicious spicy sauce made with garlic, olive oil, red or green pepper, cumin, salt, and vinegar, also often served on its own as a snack, washed down with a tall glass of wine.
Ropa Vieja
Tumblr media
The words ropa vieja, literally means “old clothes” in Spanish, but don’t worry no old clothes were added to this dish! It’s made of shredded beef, chicken or pork and vegetables that resemble a heap of colourful rags, its name comes from the fact that it’s traditionally made with leftovers & is one of Canaria’s most popular and dearly loved dishes.
Rancho Canario
Tumblr media
Having the munchies? Then dip your spoon into a bowl of one of the signature dishes, a hearty soup. It’s a tastefully thickened noodle soup made with chicken, pork and chickpeas, with a selection of vegetables – and not forgetting papas, obviously! I must say, it sure does hit the spot.
Pollo al Salmorejo and Conejo al Salmorejo
Tumblr media
The Canarians just adore this dish, light yet robust special. Pollo al salmorejo is a delightful garlicky marinated chicken dish, cooked in white wine and seasoned with cumin, oregano, paprika, and thyme. Conejo al salmorejo follows the same recipe but with rabbit meat.
Gofio
Tumblr media
This is a superfood and it’s not for the skittish but it’s a dish that echoes the history of the Canary Islands and its people. Gofio is a flour made from roasted grains of wheat, maize whose uses are endless and weird. It’s used to make many foods from dumplings for soups and sometimes ice cream. It’s not the easily palatable but the for the Canarians, its a meal packed with healthy vitamins and minerals.
Padrón Peppers
Tumblr media
Padrón peppers, these small green peppers are named after the town of Padron on mainland Spain, but they’re often served as a starter or as a tapas dish in Tenerife. The little bad boys are fried whole in olive oil and a sprinkling of sea salt is added. Pick them up by the stems to eat. The peppers are very different in flavour, some piquant and some sweet, and you will not know which you’ve got until you bite into them.
Wine
Tumblr media
The perfect way to wash down all that spice is with a delightful glass of wine. Canary Island winemakers have extremely old vines grown on the volcanic soil which is perfect for creating outstanding flavourful wines. They produce both red and white wine, but their sweet and semisweet white wines are known for light, aromatic notes and are perfect for keeping cool under the Canary Island sun.
Bienmesabe
Tumblr media
Made on Gran Canaria, which is famous for its almond trees, Bienmesabe is a sweet, soft puree made with ground almonds, egg yolk, sugar, lemon zest, and cinnamon. It is usually served with ice cream or cream. I mean, what’s not to love about a dessert whose name literally translates as “tastes good to me”?
Mouthwatering food, warm sunny beaches, and many delights await you in the Canary Islands! Travel Center UK has got the perfect solution If you’re planning to make a visit, we’ll be more than happy to help you find cheap flights, hotel deals, and planned excursions. So, call or send us an e-mail and you’ll be able to start planning your holiday today!
