Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Passiamo alla frutta: more e qualche lampone
Tumblr media

Gardening in France: Permaculture tips
This 12 months we’d like our March daffodils greater than ever, after what appears to have been an extended, chilly and notably oppressive winter. I’ve lengthy been a fan of teaming them with small-leaved ivies equivalent to silver-variegated ‘Glacier’.
The foliage is fairly and lightens the darkish winter days earlier than the daffodils emerge – however the principle bonus is that the brilliant flowers are protected by the foliage from mud splash when it rains.
In 2020, I seen a particular new ivy resolution, one assured to not climb into the arms of close by shrubs and timber or scale home partitions. This new selection known as ‘Bellecour’ after the quartier in Lyon the place it was discovered and, though it’s not variegated like ‘Glacier’, the big shiny leaves present a satisfying end to shrub borders.
I’m making an attempt it out this March beneath the shade of Prunus ‘Tai-Haku’, adopted by a planting of Narcissus poeticus var recurvus (the Pheasant’s Eye narcissus) in September 2021.
Permaculture permutation
Permaculture has been whispering candy nothings in my ear, promising much less sweat and fewer time in vegetable manufacturing. However the factor that’s actually beckoning is its promise of an enormous enchancment within the essential worm inhabitants.
This technique is about enabling the soil to mobilise its personal assets reasonably than the gardener including vitamins. It calls for the next from its adherents: 1) it’s best to by no means dig; 2) you mulch all areas a couple of times yearly; 3) you permit the roots of annual vegetation within the floor – lower the expansion of peas, beans and tomatoes slightly below floor degree and twist the stems of lettuce and cabbage away.
Plainly in utilizing a permaculture strategy vegetable productiveness could also be lowered by about 8%, however the advantages in saved time and improved soil well being appear to outweigh that small loss. There’s additionally an amazing contribution to weed suppression – each time we dig we expose a contemporary treasure trove of weed seedlings to appropriate germination circumstances.
Though a permaculture plot is commonly cultivated on mounds or raised lasagne beds, I’m making an attempt it out on the flat in beforehand dug beds. I began by laying down layers of contemporary natural matter in September 2020: previous candy corn stalks, cabbage, courgette and pumpkin foliage.
Not solely do I save house in my compost bins, however I’m additionally making use of the mulch at a time when the soil fauna and flora is hungry for natural matter and the soil must be shielded from winter rain.
This month and subsequent I’ll be planting out younger transplants instantly into the mulched floor and following up with a protecting, moisture conserving mulch from my compost bins.
When you discover it’s worthwhile to relieve compaction of the soil in spring after winter rains, don’t flip the soil over and threaten your worm inhabitants; as an alternative use one of many more and more accessible fourches écologiques, which include lengthy handles to control the (largely) 4 or six prongs which are inserted into the bottom to agitate and ‘elevate’ the soil, reasonably than flip it.
One other characteristic of permaculture is its reliance on perennial plantings. In fact, many people already develop luscious perennial crops like artichokes and asparagus, however there are lots of others to attempt, most of which have been cultivated because the Center Ages and are the ancestors of our trendy greens.

Apios Americana
I don’t suppose I’ll ever be letting go of my lettuces, peas and French beans (by no means thoughts the tomatoes, chilli peppers, aubergines and candy peppers of summer time), however there are quite a lot of value investigating. You could possibly attempt:
Arroche/Chénopode bon Henri (wild spinach, Chenopodium bonus-henricus). The arrow-shaped leaves are candy in spring and cooked like spinach, however grow to be more and more bitter because the season progresses. You can even use the flower heads in a stir-fry.
Poirée verte à couper ‘Erbette’ (perpetual spinach, Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris var. cicla). An Italian heritage selection; actually a form of chard, however with a sweeter flavour, extra like spinach. Very drought-resistant, however biennial reasonably than a real perennial.
Chou perpétuel de Daubenton (Brassica oleracea var. ramosa) A cabbage ancestor – however suppose leafy greens, with a flavour of broccoli. Choose the leaves as required: for normal harvesting you have to fairly a couple of vegetation.
Poireau perpétuel (Allium ampeloprasum) These perpetual leeks are smaller than annual leeks and will be harvested January to December. To get a blanched base to the leaves you need to earth up the bases a couple of times in a season.
Haricot patate (Potato bean, Apios Americana). That is new to me – however to not native North People! It feels like a very good potato substitute. A member of the pea household, it wants a help for its 2m stems; the tubers are harvested in winter. Though the highest progress is killed off by frost, in colder areas of France the tubers ought to persist beneath mulch in winter.
These greens will be acquired as seeds or younger vegetation at
Graines Baumaux, Ferme de Sainte Marthe, or La Semence Bio the place you will see that different perennial vegetable options.
If you’re eager about natural seeds, additionally it is effectively value trying on the thrilling vary of Kokopelli Seeds, an organization arrange in 1999 to protect the biodiversity of edible greens and medicinal vegetation. All of their seeds come from a community of natural growers and they’re notably dedicated to varieties whose seed could also be saved from 12 months to 12 months by particular person gardeners – in contrast to F1 varieties, which won’t ‘come true’ from seed.

235. Van Goeden heyndrick
Brave hendrik, Chenopodium bonus-henricus
