What When Why and How
While the Villa Antinori Toscana is something I recommend CONSTANTLY to supermarket shoppers unsure of value and quality–or even their own palate–this Chianti versions are almost double the price and contain a lot more *old-world* nuances, which a lot of newbs aren’t keen on. Here we have a clean, focused wine lacking good chunks of that, but def not California either. Mercurochrome garnet in…

Chianti classico

Tenuta Perano Chianti Classico ~ Wine of the Day
From high elevation, steeply sloping vineyards in the heart of the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany, Frescobaldi crafts Sangiovese-based red wines at Tenuta Perano. The sustainable estate’s terroir-driven wines are elegant and expressive, telling the story of the land. Tenuta Perano Chianti Classico shines as an example of this, with an inky purple color and fruit-forward flavor. The wine opens…

Querciabella 2018 Chianti Classico
Tumblr media
Absolutely singing from first drop to last. Mid-weight finesse takes shape in the form of red fruit-dark fruit mélange with violet, thyme, sandalwood and earth. Pretty, moreish with come-hither perfume, buoyant acidity and silky tannins. Marvellous focus and freshness. A sangiovese lover's dream (sic). What a difference a year in the cellar makes. — ★★★★
Appellation: Chianti Classico Region: Chianti, Toscana, Italy Subzone: Greve, Radda and Gaiole Cépage: 100% Sangiovese Abv: 14.5% Production: 150,000 Élevage: 12 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux (10% new), 3 in bottle Distributor: Asiaeuro
Critic Reviews:
The 2018 Chianti Classico is classy, polished and exceptionally beautiful. Like so many wines in 2018, the Chianti Classico is aromatic and gracious in feel, more finesse than power. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright Sangiovese fruit. From start to finish, the 2018 is all class. Drink: 2022–2033. Antonio Galloni (Vinous, 09/2020) 93
Querciabella Chianti Classico 2018 is fine and expressive on the nose: really focused cherry and plum fruit with fine green notes and lovely aromas. The palate is supremely fresh and balanced with lovely focus to the fresh, elegant red berry fruits, as well as nice herby, slightly spicy complexity. Really bright and expressive. Jamie Goode (Wineanorak.com) 95
This red shows some depth to the black cherry, black currant, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors. There is a hint of tar, and the firm structure is well-integrated. Drink now through 2032. Bruce Sanderson (Wine Spectator, 06/2021) 90
Luscious, juicy fruit on the palate and silky tannins that make their mark. Beautiful balance and elegant and concentrated at the same time. Amazing length and focus. Walter Speller (Jancis Robinson) 17.5
Sweet wood nuances lead with cinnamon, clove and a touch of vanilla eventually ceding to wild cherry and wet soil. On the palate, forest berries are laced with chocolate. The fruit is concentrated and plush with ripe, powdery tannins giving effortless support. This is its usual sophisticated and polished self, with lots of juiciness. Yields are a low 30 hl/ha and ageing is in a combination of French oak tonneaux and barriques, 10% new. Give this another year for the wood to integrate. Michaela Morris (Decanter, 03/2021) 91
This wine combines fruit from high-elevation vineyards on three soil types (predominantly sandstone, galestro and limestone) to give flavors of pure red cherry laced with soft notes of tobacco and herbs. Scents of pink petals add lift, and the wine stays integrated through a fresh, vibrant finish. Stephanie Johnson (Wine & Spirits, 04/2021) 92
Remains 100 per cent sangiovese, as it has been since 2012, as a three-commune collection; Ruffoli in Greve (40 per cent), on the Volpaia side and across the valley to Radda (20) and San Polo in Rosso from Gaiole (20), across the ravine from Ama. The totality of the Gaiole fruit is raised on Alberese, the Radda in schisty Galestro and Ruffoli, well Ruffoli is really about elevation. A no extremities vintage following a very cold winter and no climate spikes save for the early August heat. The Querciabella richness is foiled but also optimized by a three-part mineral harmony that does not so much cut but adds three district notes to the wine. The epiphany may or not begin with this 2018 but the textural perception has undergone a transformational alteration, now in defence against the drying effect of sangiovese’s tannin. The winemaking team has moved forward from the experimental stage into a full-on working contract with Piedmontese cappello sommerso, keeping the cap submerged for extended periods (up to 45 days). The high elevation fruit is particularly promising, forging true connectivity with the process. You get it completely, intuit the polish and this Annata just melts straight into inherit structure, again with thanks for a portion that has settled early. The wheel is constantly turning for Querciabella’s wines. Stupendo. Drink 2022-2032. Michael Godel (Wine Align, 05/2021) 94

The Story of Chianti Classico: Legends, Tradition, and Anecdotes
Chianti Classico, a renowned Italian wine, has a history rich in legends, traditions, and anecdotes. Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, this wine has captivated the palates of connoisseurs for centuries. In this article, we will embark on a journey through time to explore the fascinating story behind Chianti Classico, uncovering the tales of its origins, the traditions that have shaped its production, and the amusing anecdotes that have become intertwined with its legacy.
The Origins of Chianti Classico: The origins of Chianti Classico can be traced back to the Etruscans, who cultivated vineyards in the region more than two millennia ago. However, it was during the Middle Ages that Chianti Classico began to take shape as we know it today. Legends speak of a Florentine knight, Black Rooster, who used a rooster's crow to mark the borders of the Chianti region. This act led to the establishment of Chianti's boundaries and ultimately contributed to the birth of Chianti Classico.
Traditions and Regulations: Chianti Classico's production is governed by strict regulations that have preserved its authenticity and quality. The Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico, established in 1924, plays a vital role in safeguarding the wine's heritage. The consortium's mission includes protecting the distinctively shaped bottle, the black rooster emblem, and the traditional winemaking techniques unique to Chianti Classico. The use of Sangiovese grapes, the primary varietal of Chianti Classico, is a testament to its deep-rooted tradition.
The Sangiovese Grape and the Terroir: At the heart of Chianti Classico lies the Sangiovese grape, which thrives in the region's unique terroir. The vineyards, situated on hilly slopes, benefit from the Mediterranean climate and the limestone-rich soils. The Sangiovese grape exhibits a remarkable range of flavors, from red fruits and spices to earthy undertones. Winemakers carefully blend this varietal with other indigenous and international grapes to achieve the perfect balance and express the true essence of Chianti Classico.
The Evolution of Chianti Classico: Throughout history, Chianti Classico has undergone various transformations and faced numerous challenges. In the 1970s, the addition of white grapes to the blend caused controversy and compromised the wine's reputation. However, visionary winemakers recognized the need for change and pushed for higher quality standards. In the 1980s, a new classification system was introduced, elevating Chianti Classico to DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) status, the highest level of Italian wine classification. This change marked a turning point for Chianti Classico, propelling it into the global spotlight.
Chianti Classico in Pop Culture: Chianti Classico's allure extends beyond the realm of wine enthusiasts. It has left an indelible mark in popular culture, including literature, art, and film. It gained widespread recognition in the novel "Under the Tuscan Sun" by Frances Mayes, where it served as a symbol of the Italian way of life. Additionally, the iconic straw-covered bottle, known as a "fiasco," has been depicted in countless paintings and advertisements. Notably, the line "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti" from the film "The Silence of the Lambs" added a chilling yet memorable association with the wine.
Chianti Classico: A Culinary Delight: Chianti Classico's versatility and ability to complement a wide range of dishes make it a favorite among wine enthusiasts and food lovers alike. The wine's acidity and tannins pair perfectly with classic Tuscan cuisine, such as Bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine steak) and Pappardelle al Cinghiale (wild boar ragu). Additionally, its smooth and velvety texture makes it an ideal accompaniment to aged cheeses and rich, decadent desserts.
Conclusion: The story of Chianti Classico is one of ancient origins, tradition, and adaptation. From the mythical Black Rooster to the meticulous regulations that govern its production, this wine is a testament to the dedication and passion of the winemakers in the Chianti region. With its rich history, diverse flavors, and cultural significance, Chianti Classico continues to captivate wine enthusiasts around the world. Raise a glass to this iconic wine, and let its tales of legends, traditions, and anecdotes transport you to the picturesque hills of Tuscany.

Marching Orders
Just a stunningly gorgeous wine–something I find surprising considering its massive production, low-brow marketing and the fact this bottle spent its entire life upright on a Rite Aid shelf, probably the top one! We all have had wines straight from the winery cellar which were solid DECADES after those out in private collections started failing, so one can only wonder what THIS would be like with…
