This kildeer scared off Searocket and its semipalmated sandpiper friend. Kildeer are dicks!
Over the past summer (2023), Imani (the adult piping plover, offspring of original Montrose Beach pair Monty and Rose) sometimes chased them, instead of the three fledglings, around. I didn’t get to see this myself but the pictures are amazing, considering the size difference.
I did see a kildeer chase Monty in umm 2021? 2?, so Imani is avenging his father 🥲

Hiya Sam! Not sure if you've seen this but there's a change-dot-org petition to preserve the green space along the Metra UP North Rebuild project between Addison and Fullerton in Chicago. Just wanted to pass this along in case it's of interest to you at all. (Tumblr won't let me include the link but if you search for "Preserve Chicago's Fragile Ecosystem" on change-dot-org it should be the first result that pops up.)
Hey, thanks for the heads up and sorry this response is about a week late! The petition is still active (Chicagoans, you can sign it here!) and it feels good to participate in a little local change. I'll pass it on to local friends as well!

Searocket, a federally endangered Great Lakes piping plover fledgling. I hope it's ok, when it left Montrose for migration it had fishing net tangled in its foot :c

Chicago River Snapping Turtle
Have you seen a Chicago River snapping turtle? Last week two kayakers spotted this huge common snapping turtle, affectionately nicknamed Chonkosaurus, basking on a rotting pylon and rusty chains. Common snapping turtles are common throughout much of Illinois but this sighting is an exciting sign that the health of the Chicago River is improving. Within the last two decades intensive cleanup efforts have allowed to native wildlife and plants to return to an area that was heavily polluted.
