Blood Red Sky (2021)

Unfortunately, the advertisements give away the biggest surprises in Blood Red Sky but knowing only slightly diminishes the fun you'll have with this action/thriller/horror. Fresh, tense, exciting, with great monster moments and solid characters bolstered by good performances, it’s one of the year’s highlights.

Nadja (Peri Baumeister) and her son Elias (Carl Anton Koch) are on a transatlantic flight to New York where she will see a specialist for the blood condition that ails her. While in the air, the plane is highjacked. As the terrorists round everyone up, Nadja is shot… only to rise again.

If you didn’t know (the poster gives it away so I'm not sure how) Nadja is a vampire. Suddenly, the movie’s something new. The direction it will take is uncertain. There’s a monster aboard the plane. Actually, there are several. The question is, which is worse? The terrorists, or the bloodsucker?

This movie is always changing and keeping you guessing. Nadja is essentially bullet-proof so it’s almost like a superhero playing Air Force One. You want her to tear throats and gorge on the blood of terrorists but feeding could make her lose control. Worse, she might create other vampires. This is where Blood Red Sky morphs into a horror movie. There’s a reason she wants to get cured and while she might not attack her son, others won’t have the same restraints. We're getting ahead of ourselves. How will the terrorists react when they realize a vampire's onboard? She might be strong but she’s not invincible and Elias certainly isn’t. Now, it’s back to a thriller.

Writers Stefan Holtz and Peter Thorwarth (who also directs) have seen a lot of films and taken notes. In every highjacking movie, there’s always a crazy guy, the wild one you know will go kill-crazy (here, he’s played by Alexander Scheer). If you’re ever in a dire situation, the right move is to get rid of them right away. When the terrorists are faced with a scenario they never could’ve imagined, he kind of become the one they turn to, which is extra scary.

Something new is nice. Something smart is better. The terrorists' plan to take control is nearly air-tight. You don’t know what you would do to get out of there but everything you’d try, you see the sympathetic Farid (Kais Setti) try. There are a lot of good performances in this film. The bad guys are slimy, menacing, and despicable. Nadja is scary but tragic and loving. Kais Setti’s character is essentially us. Even when someone does something that makes you shake your head, it makes sense. Elias has never known his mother when she wasn’t a vampire. For him, this is a very different situation than for everyone else, which makes things extra complicated.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a vampire movie where the creatures of the night were scary. While Blood Red Sky is only partially a horror film (which means the idea of vampirism isn’t fully explored) it delivers what it promises and more.
