China is already the largest EV user in the world, with the IEA saying in the context of electric buses for 2019 that “About half a million electric buses are in circulation, most of which are in China.”
Even though China has reduced EV subsidies, the Chinese electric bus market is unlikely to witness any major impact, as most of the buses are run by government agencies, for whom subsidies do not matter anyway. This year, 321 tons of products have been delivered.
The city also has established programmes that offer essential goods at 50 percent lower prices for low-income residents. Other programmes provide free or very inexpensive meals for vulnerable communities, totalling over 2 million meals served in 2023.
Recognising urban agriculture’s multifaceted benefits, the SAMPA+RURAL Program aims to establish 400 urban farms and five school greenhouses by 2024. The programme’s online platform hosts over 2,600 initiatives, allowing citizens to discover local farmers and access eco-tourism options. São Paulo is thus creating a sustainability hub, fostering rural and urban agricultural development while promoting healthy living.

China is the largest manufacturer of electric buses and accounts for 55% of the worldwide sales of new-energy vehicles. This rapid transition to clean transportation has not only made a huge impact on the environment, with the decline in carbon dioxide emissions, but also decreased the dependence on non-renewable fuels. An extensively electrified transportation system is necessary if China wants to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Electric buses consume 73% less energy than conventional buses that run on diesel. The yearly carbon dioxide emission caused by diesel vehicles is estimated at 129.91 kg per 100 km, while fully electric buses release virtually no emissions. This is why BEBs receive the strongest support from the people’s government and this is also why major OEMs have been focusing on these models.
In all, there were more than 500,000 electric buses running on the streets of China in 2019, which is higher than any other country in the world. In 2020, around 61,000 were sold and 150,000 produced in the Land of the Dragon. Further, Beijing added 11,000 more buses to its public fleet in 2020, which resulted in a massive reduction in the pollution levels for its 22 million residents.
Moreover, Shenzhen has already transitioned to 100% clean transportation with 16,000 electric buses and 22,000 electric taxis. The electric buses running in the city usually have batteries with a capacity of 250 kWh. Additionally, there are around 1,800 chargers across the city, via which it costs around $45 or CNY 300 to charge an electric bus. The headquarters of BYD, one of the major EV manufacturers in the world, is also located in Shenzhen.
BYD has been, by far, the largest electric bus provider in the People’s Republic for many years. Of the 7,000 buses it has sold around the world in over a decade, most have been bought by entities in China. Other recognized electric bus OEMs operating in the country are Zhengzhou Yutong Group Co. Ltd., Zhongtong Bus & Holding Co. Ltd. Dongfeng Motor Corp., and Anhui Ankai Automobile Co. Ltd.
