CQL and Genre Intertextuality
I'm being bashed over the head with the "nhs's fan in CQL is made of xuantie/dark iron" thing again and @poorlittleyaoyao please understand that I am thinking of this constantly since you made that post talking about it because I'm just.
holding my head in my hands bc ye gods the cql show writers were genre savvy in ways that are hilarious but also make me feel like I've been hit upside the head with a waffle iron.
For those of us who are no longer damaged by the post or hadn't seen it (I don't actually know where it's gone bc the search feature doesn't work on this webbed site):
Xuantie/Dark Iron is a Jin Yong created metal that famously was used for the blade of the Dragon Slaying Sabre in the third novel of the Condor Trilogy, 倚天屠龍記/The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber.
The Heaven Reliant Sword 倚天劍 was created from Yang Guo and Xiao Longnv's Gentleman and Lady swords, whilst the Dragon Slaying Saber 屠龍刀 was created from Grandmaster Dugu Seeking-a-Loss's Dark Iron Sword.
Can we please all take a moment to appreciate how NHS's fan not his saber, NHS, from The Family With The Sabers, gets to shout about how his fan is made of xuantie. The most famous for being the metal that made up The Dragon Slaying Saber. His fan. Not his saber. his fan. dark iron. Dragon Slaying Saber. This is so funny I'm about to mcfucking lose it yet again while typing this.
Going back to Grandmaster Dugu Seeking-A-Loss (who appears in both Return of the Condor Heroes and Xiao Ao Jianghu) and his giant pet condor (sadly, only a ROCH feature) who might've been his one true soulmate for a second, this situation from episode 7, when the Yunmeng Siblings are leaving the Cloud Recesses:
Tumblr media
Now, the subtitles here really DO NOT do this line justice because when I first saw it it took me FLAT THE FUCK OUT and I had to lie on the floor laughing for like, 80 seconds before I got my breath back.
Okay, what this line ACTUALLY says is "I am Dugu Qiubai (Grandmaster Dugu Seeking-A-Loss), what's wrong with seeking a match?"
Now, to understand this, we come to this backstory on Dugu Qiubai in XAJH:
“Senior master Dugu Seeking-A-Loss, who created this set of sword techniques, had a name ‘Seeking-A-Loss.’ He had been seeking a loss all his life and still couldn’t get one. Once the sword techniques were executed, he would become unmatched anywhere in the world. Why would he have to defend? If anyone could have forced him to draw his sword back and defend himself, the respectful master would have burst with joy and be delighted beyond measure.” Feng Qingyang said. “Dugu Seeking-A-Loss, Dugu Seeking-A-Loss,” Linghu Chong muttered as he imagined how the senior master had wandered about the Martial World, unmatched anywhere, with only his sword, and couldn’t even find a single one who was capable of forcing him into a defending stance. That was truly admirable.
from Chapter Ten of XAJH: Sword Training.
"If anyone could force him to draw his sword back to defend himself, the grandmaster would have burst with joy and be delighted beyond measure" DO YOU SEE WHY JC STARTED CALLING WWX SHAMELESS NOW. they're JUNIORS. WWX is calling himself "the greatest man of all, who'd sought the feeling of losing just ONCE being forced to defend himself just ONCE in a LIFETIME" and saying "LWJ might be my equal. my soulmate. the loss I was seeking my whole life."
All 15 years of it I'm sure, WWX.
I'm not going to get into finding martial arts manuals or a respected grandmaster who taught you incredible things in a cave bc 1) LHC and Feng Qingyang up there are sitting together, in a cave and LHC is being taught incredible things and 2) Duan Yu from Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils once found the magic finger lasers of ultra laser in a cave. In front of the statue of a goddess. (don't talk about the dancing goddess statue now, Tav. We don't have time for that in this post.)
Not kidding the intertextuality of CQL and how much it plays with and against the tropes of its genre, especially other wuxia tv adaptations as well as wuxia novels is insane. There's other ones I'm missing for certain and these were just the most funny to me, personally, but! just! oh my god! insane! insane! SO funny, so clever in so many ways

Rev. Chong-yong Yu Took Thousands from the Malaysian Church
Tumblr media

“I left from the Malaysian Unification Church almost a decade ago. The main reason was the former national leader misused and took the public money and ran away to Korea. His name is Yu Choong-Yong, a Korean national leader of Malaysia around ten years ago. From when this case happened until now, the Unification Church HQ has never given us any explanation. This meant that UC HQ allowed the National Leader to seize the public money and not need to take the responsibility.”

Dr. Chung-sik Yong caused many problems in Oceania and now, after an absence of over a decade, he’s back there (2013 letter).

Biography of Tuoba Kuduo
[Failed pretender. From WS015]
Zhaocheng's son Kuduo. After Zhaocheng collapsed, Fu Luo considered him grown up, and forced him to move to Chang'an. Fu Jian was courteous to him, and taught him hence book studies. Because of the chaos he followed Murong Yong to move east. Yong used him as Grand Warden of Xinxing.
At the defeat of Liu Xian, he dispatched his younger brother Kangni and others to welcome Kuduo, and thereupon pressure the southern border. Hence the various sections were disturbed and agitated. Taizu's left and right, Yu Huan and others, planned to respond to him. An accomplice, Shan Wugan [?] hence reported it. Taizu was worried and anxious about people's hearts, he was lost in stammers and was not yet bringing it out. After three days, Huan informed his mother's uncle Mu Chong about his plans. Chong also reported it. Taizu therefore executed Huan and others, 5 people. The remainder, Mo Ti and others, seven families, he fully pardoned and did not question.
Taizu worried about interior difficulties and therefore went north past Yin Mountain to favour the Helan section. He dispatched An Tong and Zhangsun He to summon troops from Murong Chui. [Zhangsun] He absconded and ran to Kuduo. An Tong travelled furtively and consequently got through to Zhongshan. Muroing Chui dispatched his son Helin with six thousand infantry and cavalry to go along with him.
An Tong and Chui's messenger Lan He turned back together, and got through to Niuchuan. Kuduo's older brother's son Yilie stood against him. An Tong therefore secretly hid among the merchants and traders' bags. When evening arrived, he then entered an empty well and managed to escape, he carried on running to Helin.
The army was not arriving, but little by little pressed forward. He Rangan secretly held close different angle, and therefore made Kuduo come and invade the northern section. People were all frightened and terrified, and did not have a strong will. Hence the Great Man of the Northern Section, Shusun Puluo and others and the various Wuhuan absconded and ran to Weichen. Helin heard about it, and consequently dispatched An Tong, Zhu Tan, and others to come. When they knew that Helin's army was nearby, the multitudes then were a little settled.
Taizu went from Nu Mountain to favour Niuchuan. Kudou advanced to defend Gaoliu. Taizu again sent An Tong to go to Helin, and following that they agreed to meet at an appointed time. An Tong turned back. Taizu went past Canhe, and set out from north of Dai to meet with Helin at Gaoliu. Kuduo was surrounded and in difficulties, he looked at the flags, ran and fled. Thereupon Weichen killed him. The Emperor thoroughly gathered his multitudes. Helin separated from the Emperor and went home to Zhongshan.

Learn Chinese in Chinese stories|Chinese legends|Nuwa mended the sky
Human always like to live by water. The Yellow River Basin in China also gave birth to the earliest Chinese culture, and China's floods seem to be quite frequent, the  five thousand years of Chinese history also was a history of water control.
In the Chinese legend, the water God Gonggong fought with the fire God Zhurong, Gonggong damaged the Buzhou mountains which supported the sky and earth, the water came out of the sky river, flooding the world. This was the first great flood. Finally, the human creator Nu WA made a multicolored divine stones out of hot fire
and mended the sky.

Note
Since ROTK games have had the Viceroy role for a long while now, was there any historical basis for "Viceroys" during the Jian'an and Three Kingdoms era? If so who fulfilled this role in history?
There’s no real direct equivalent of the Viceroy position the ROT3K games have. There a couple who have elements of it.
Provincial governors had a bit more authority over their provinces than the old inspectors did. They could raise soldiers and lead local campaigns, since they were installed in provinces where rebellion was an immediate concern and needed to be able to suppress enemies of the state. But this position very quickly stopped being about governing a province. It started being used that way in 188, but by the end of 191 it meant something else entirely. Warlords started making themselves governors of provinces (or getting the title from the puppet court), with subordinates appointed to their subsidiary provinces with the lesser title of inspector.
Sometimes (especially in Wei) officials were given command over the military affairs of one or more provinces. I call these officials Marshals although that’s an oversimplification of the titles involved. These commanders had broad authority and could essentially do whatever they needed to do with their armies without the need for the court’s approval. They were usually stationed on the borders to defend from attacks - particularly in Liang and Yong, Jing, and Yang (sometimes with command over an additional province like Yu, Yan, and Xu for support). Wu and Shu used similar appointments, though not as regularly as Wei.
I think these “marshals” are the closest equivalent. Some of them include Cao Xiu, Sima Yi, Man Chong, Zhuge Dan, Guanqiu Jian, Deng Ai, Wang Ji, and others.

Tumblr media
Left: Kook-jin nim and In-jin nim with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (red tie); also present are Ariana Moon and Rev. Chong-yong Yu; Right: Kook-jin nim in conversation with the Speaker of the House of Representatives
“I left from the Malaysian Unification Church almost a decade ago, the main reason is the former national leader misused and took the public money and ran away to korea. His name is Yu Choong Yong, a Korean national leader of Malaysia around ten years ago. After this case happen, until now, the UC HQ never gave us any explanation. This meant that UC HQ allowed the National Leader to seize the public money and not need take the responsibility.”

36 Couples – many left the FFWPU / Unification Church
                                    Updated December 16, 2018
Tumblr media
▲ In Seoul, after the final ceremony for the 36 couples, there was a public procession of the couples in cars. Moon always sought maximum publicity from the mass marriages he held.
This list should be an accurate list of the original 36 couples who were married by Moon. During 1960-1961 he held three ceremonies. He then put all the couples together as one group which became known as ‘the 36 couples’. When some defected they were replaced by couples from the 72 couples group or others. For example Mr. Moon said: No one knows, if Seuk Joon-ho  [Dr. Seuk, the son of Mrs. Choi Won-pok] enters the 36 couples…” January 2, 1997, São Paulo, Brazil.

▲ Here are 12 of the Ewha Womans University students who were expelled because of the“scandalous rites” of the Unification Church. After their expulsion, the students managed to meet President Kim Hwallan on May 23, 1955. She stood by her decision. This picture was taken on campus after the meeting.
(Top from left) Seo Myung-jin, Lee Gye-soon*, Sa Gil-ja, Chi Saeng-ryeon**, Park Young-sook, Kang Jung-won and Chung Dae-hwa (who was later married to Kim Young-whi)
(Bottom from left) Choi Soon-wha (the mother of Sam Park), Yim Seung-hee***, Kim Jung-eun, Shin Mi-shik (later known as Mamasan Choi) and Park Seung-kyu.
* Lee Gye-soon entered Kyunghee University in 1957. She left the Unification Church over 50 years ago and had a successful career as a professor.
** Before Chi Saeng-ryeon joined she was known as Chi Mal-sook, and after she moved to the US in 1973 she was known as Mal-sook Lee.
*** Her name may be 朴承姫 Park Seung-hee and not 林 Yim or Lim Seung-hee.
Kim Yun-rye was also expelled but later made a pledge to give up the Unification Church, and Ewha Womans University allowed her to return to her studies.
Eight of the expelled students entered other universities in 1956.
Ewha in the list of 36 couples = Ewha Woman’s University students.
These ten women joined as students during the Ewha University Sex Scandal of 1955. There were other students who joined, but they were not included in the 36 couples marriage, which took place in stages during 1960-1961.
The Hongs (couple 16) left in the 1990s. They are the parents of Nansook Hong. Her brother, Jin-whi Hong, was married to Ye Jin Moon. He left before Nansook – and he helped Nansook to escape the East Garden compound.
Moon bought a house for each of the 36 couples. Apparently, because Korea is a “low-trust” nation, this was one way of trying to ensure their loyalty. Moon: “In Korea I bought houses for many early members of our Church and in the future I would like to take the responsibility of buying houses for all the black, white and yellow people. I am the only one in history who is doing this, but it isn’t easy.”
October 3, 1976  Belvedere, New York.  Translator: Bo Hi Pak.
The 36 couples were the first of two or three “Royal Blessings”. They definitely included the 36 and 72 couples and probably included the 124 couples. The wives from the “Royal Blessings” were all “purified” by Mr. Moon. The “Royal Couples” were also known as Mr. Moon’s “Tribe”. More is explained in this Shukan Post October 15, 1993 magazine article, published at the same time as Mr. Chong-hwa Pak’s book.
Some of the 36 couples became quite wealthy and lived in expensive properties. Some had Japanese members helping in their homes.
Moon kept many of the 36 couples separated from their spouses for years and years. This caused some couples great heartache – for example Kim Won-pil was one who longed to be with his wife. It caused complications in other couples.
It is a fact that the 36 couples all had “womb cleansing” pikareum sex rituals with Mr. Moon. The theology was explained to Japanese members in the early 1990s by Mr. Yoshiaki Hiro, Mr. Kunio Sano and Mr. Yasutomo Shirai. (Mr Takeru Kamiyama was to be the main lecturer, but he was in hospital with stomach problems.) There had also been lectures given in Japan about pikareum in the 1980s by a lecturer called Ota.
Here are some further quotes from Moon about the 36 couples:
“I have received many such certificates from Satan. One of the most dramatic was during the Blessing of the 36 couples. Incredible controversy erupted at that time; people were praying to God, “Please don’t let Reverend Moon take my son away. Let him die tonight instead.” … At the time of the 36 couple Blessing, the entire nation of Korea opposed me. I was a villain in the eyes of the country.”
December 27, 1981, Belvedere, New York.
“This is the first group of people I blessed. These cover every facet of our society every group of society so for everyone who accepts the principle there is room to go to heaven. They have their own ladder to climb up. They have their own channel. Do you understand? I want you to understand that I opened 36 doors so that every person here on earth has one door to get into. No opportunity is lost, there is always a door open for everyone out there, once they accept and repent they can go through one door which is the mercy of God.”
 May 20, 1978, London.
“All women’s love should unite with me. The 36 couples should not think about their own family, but how to save the nation.”
July 14, 2002, East Garden, New York.

From three states' tripod establishment, they in turn raided and invaded each other, and exchanged victories and losses. In the defense of the borders, what was one or the other's territory was not consistent. To slander success and bring life to failure, then one does not have the leisure to live. Now roughly summarized their long past stations and garrisons and the lands of their strategic points[19].
