Get ready for high-flying acrobatics, whimsical characters, and side-splitting clowning! The world-renowned Cirque du Soleil is making a triumphant return to the Santa Monica Pier this October, bringing its acclaimed production KOOZA for a limited engagement. From October 19th through December 1st, audiences can experience the magic of Cirque du Soleil under the iconic Big Top, creating lasting memories at this cherished location. Cirque du Soleil A Beloved Tradition Returns: Cirque du Soleil Lights Up Santa Monica The return of Cirque du Soleil is a cause for celebration in Santa Monica. As Mayor Phil Brock highlights, this acclaimed production adds another layer to the vibrant arts and culture scene the city offers. “I’m looking forward to seeing show-goers enjoy our beautiful city and encourage everyone to make a day of it by visiting our local restaurants and attractions,” says Mayor Brock. KOOZA: A Breathtaking Return to Cirque du Soleil's Roots KOOZA isn't just another show; it's a journey back to the very essence of Cirque du Soleil. This production pays homage to the traditional circus, showcasing awe-inspiring acrobatics and hilarious slapstick comedy in all their glory. Filled with heart-stopping thrills, infectious laughter, and a sense of wonder, KOOZA promises a non-stop, adrenaline-fueled experience that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The story follows the Innocent, a wide-eyed character who finds himself transported to a whimsical and fantastical world under the watchful gaze of a mysterious trickster. Prepare to be captivated by a series of mind-boggling acrobatic feats, where the impossible becomes possible. A Legacy of Innovation: Cirque du Soleil Celebrates 40 Years This Santa Monica engagement holds a special significance for Cirque du Soleil. “We are thrilled to announce the return of Cirque du Soleil to the beautiful Santa Monica Pier,” says Duncan Fisher, President of the Touring Shows Division at Cirque du Soleil. This marks the 10th anniversary since Cirque du Soleil last graced the Santa Monica Pier, a location that holds special memories for the company. “Cirque du Soleil’s relationship with Santa Monica dates back to 1987, where we received such a warm welcome that it sparked our climb to global prominence,” Fisher continues. “As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, it is only fitting we return to the community and fans who supported us from the very beginning. We look forward to welcoming visitors, old and new, into the world of KOOZA.” Unveiling the Magic: KOOZA's Daring Acrobatics Undeniably one of Cirque du Soleil's most daring productions, KOOZA takes audiences on a thrilling emotional ride. The show draws inspiration from traditional circus arts from around the globe, featuring awe-inspiring displays of showmanship, exceptional execution, and incredible agility. Prepare to be mesmerized by breathtaking feats on the High Wire, Teeterboard, and the Wheel of Death. This announcement comes on the heels of another exciting California engagement. As previously announced, Cirque du Soleil will be performing under the Big Top at the Laguna Hills Mall from June 8th through July 21st. A Storied History: Cirque du Soleil and Santa Monica Pier The Santa Monica Pier holds a special place in Cirque du Soleil's history. The company made its first-ever United States debut at the opening of the Los Angeles Festival in 1987. That same year, Cirque du Soleil set up its Big Top on the Santa Monica Pier for its first international staged show. This pivotal moment proved to be a turning point in the company's trajectory, propelling them towards global recognition. The warm reception in Santa Monica led to a California tour that significantly boosted Cirque du Soleil's visibility. Since then, the company has returned to the Santa Monica Pier with 10 different productions, solidifying it as a favorite touring destination. This October, Cirque du Soleil returns to the Santa Monica Pier, igniting anticipation for a spectacular engagement with the electrifying production KOOZA.

Part Two: Performances. CIRCUS BELLA (https://www.circusbella.org), the fabulous San Francisco-based troupe, recently completed a three-week stay over the holidays right in the middle of downtown San Francisco (East Cut). In a tent! Clowns, acrobats, juggling, aerialists, live music, the whole deal. These are performance photos - behind-the-scenes images were in the previous post.
A self-assignment, I documented the entire process starting weeks before opening night, from raising the tent, through rehearsals and multiple performances, opening to closing night, plus extensive behind-the-scenes documentation. They let me backstage, a privilege I did not take for granted - that's a private space for any performer. Even though I knew some of the people already and had been around performances before, I was struck - flabbergasted, even - by every single person's intense camaraderie and collaboration while building the tent - a monumental process - and after that, developing and perfecting the show. Everyone pitched in, including performers who helped raise the tent and swept up between shows. Circus culture is an amazingly supportive one, a lesson for us all - me, anyway.
1 - Dwoira Galilea 2 - Ori Quesada 3 - Jefferson Freire and Abigail Munn 4 - Clowns: Jamie Coventry, Calvin Kai Ku, Natasha Kaluza 5 - Natasha Kaluza flying and the Band 6 - Julie Marshall and Kirk Marsh 7 - Toni Cannon 8 - Veronica Blair 9 - Abigail Munn and the Clowns: Kalvin Kai Ku, Jamie Coventry, and Natasha Kaluza 10 - Company closing the show.

🚧 WIP ⚠️ Can you guess what I’m designing? Basically I decided to follow a prompt I saw - it was fairly open ended but to the point, and as soon as I read which one I wanted to do - boom - circus theme music starts up in my head and images or jesters and harlequins came forth!
In fact - I’m not just planning on this one - there might be many many more too come get all based on the circus!
I’ve always loved circus, it’s utterly thrilling, a giggle a minute and lots of tense 😬 moments.
When I was studying art & design at college, we actually studied Cirque De Soleil in Life Drawing ✍️
We were tasked with drawing the complex poses of the acrobats and trapeze artists, focusing on how the body could contort and working on shading and light. I really enjoyed it, but we didn’t half have some odd looking pictures at the end of it 😂
This particular piece still has some elements to be added yet; on of which is puppet strings…. Are you any closer to guessing? Leave me a comment below 👇 stay tuned for the final design 🧡✨
