Non, t’es pas tout seul ANDY

A l'écoute de ce nouvel opus du chef du Mégaoctet, je me suis interrogée sur certaines compositions qui ont réveillé ma nostalgie.

Si le titre n’était déjà pris, Alone Together résumerait bien mieux que de longs discours le nouveau projet du pianiste Andy Emler qui a créé une suite de petites pièces pour piano et solistes (instrumentistes et vocalistes) mettant en valeur la personnalité musicale de ses amis/partenaires.

Il a plus que jamais un vrai désir de musique en commun pour traverser le temps, les espaces naturels, se moquant des dénivellés, gravissant les escarpements rocheux allègrement pour mieux dégringoler les pentes, ou se coulant en rivière, enflant et grondant comme un torrent…

Au fil des pièces qui se succèdent, on se réjouira des surprises abordées avec le chant de la flûtiste syrienne Naïssam Jallal; dans “12 oysters in the lake”, il réserve à  Ballake Sissoko avec lequel Emler a joué de l’orgue dans des églises, un ostinato qui permet au chant de ce maître de la kora de s’élever. Dans la délicate pièce “The Rise of the Sad Groove”, le timbre sensible de la saxophoniste alto Géraldine Laurent mêlé aux voix d'Hervé Fontaine, en un doux ressac, ebb and flow, nous transporte au bord de l’océan!

Son partenaire du “chauve power”, le saxophoniste Thomas von Pourquery, il le fait chanter, avec Phil Reptil, dans ce “Light please” exalté, lointainement inspiré de Ludwig von … et d’une demande en concert de faire du Beethoven. Bizarre requête mais tous deux s’étaient gentiment exécutés à partir du Clair de Lune…. “Light Please”, une impro détonante qui s’appelle ainsi Car après la nuit….

Abrupt dans les graves, percutant et percussif encore et toujours, comme dans cette intro “Jingle Tails” (un jeu de mots avec "Jingle Bells", ça ne m’étonnerait pas!). Mécanique et obsessionnel, martelant des accords surprenants, sa musique rythmiquement appuyée, affirme un sens dramatique évident avec un goût prononcé pour les reprises, les boucles, les échos, les répétitions passionnées.

“Quand on pense à un soliste, on n’écrit pas de la même manière, il faut simuler la présence de l’autre et jouer comme s’il était là! “Travail de mémoire, de réminiscences comme il a su très bien faire avec son My own Ravel, où il ne jouait pas du Ravel. Je me souviens à l’époque avoir été prise de cours tant sa partition me semblait faites de citations, d'extraits existants ravéliens! Non, tout provenait de sa plume. Géraldine Laurent partage son goût pour Ravel même si c’est dans “Près de son nom”, avec son pote de toujours, le contrebassiste Claude Tchamitchian, qu’il joue au plus près du maître, à grands traits d’archets, déchirants de mélancolie, avant de prendre la main, tant il connaît son Ravel sur le bout des touches.

Même impression en écoutant “The Warm up”, un échauffement harmonisé, inspiré de la musique symphonique de Genesis, celui de Peter Gabriel. Mais à 90% d’EMLER et 10% du groupe anglais. Il ne nous facilite pas la tâche, jamais de citation franche, même courte, mais des fredons qui se fondent littéralement dans sa version, un écho fugace qu’au détour d’un fragment, d’une phrase musicale, la mémoire croit reconnaître! J’ai écouté plusieurs fois ce titre et me pose cette devinette: est-ce un retour de l’intro grandiose de The lamb lies down on Broadway ou une “resucée” emlerienne de Firth of Fifth de l’admirable Selling England by The Pound? Il y mêle peut être un écho de Foxtrot ou Nursery Rhymes ?

Je donne ma langue au chat mais voilà encore un exercice de style qui n’en manque pas: s’il renvoie aux maîtres de l’instrument, ce piano qui danse, est assez éloigné du jazz américain. Andy Emler a une culture, une formation et se reconnaît dans une génération qui l’autorisent à sortir de ces références. Ecoutons donc ce compositeur à la signature immédiatement reconnaissable, à l’univers des plus attachants qui sait se fondre dans celui de ses partenaires. Merci et encore bravo l’artiste!

WANG Ying-Chieh / Erhu

Erhu virtuoso Wang Ying-chieh was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She first began her studies in piano, violin, and composition under the Western classical music tradition, then moved to Erhu and Traditional Chinese music. She served as the concertmaster of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra. Starting from 2012 she began her solo career, collaborating with artists from various fields and establishing Erhu as a solo instrument in diverse and non-traditional contexts. She was invited numerous times as a soloist and performed with ensembles such as Regensburg Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany, Ensemble KNM in Berlin, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, Jiangsu Traditional Orchestra, National Chinese Orchestra of Taiwan, Taipei Chinese Orchestra, and the Kaohsiung Chinese Orchestra. She has also collaborated with the improvisation group MAFIA ensemble, and was the feature artist of the French contemporary music association TPMC’s “new works for Erhu” project. She was chosen by the Taiwan Music Institute for its innovative performer-composer commissioning partnership program. She has also been awarded by the Ministry of Culture in Taiwan for a residency at the Cité Internationale des arts in Paris. She received her Masters of Performing Art from the Chinese Culture University College of Arts in Taipei. Currently she is a member of the Pan Project Ensemble, an ensemble featuring traditional instruments from Chinese, Korea, and Japanese cultures; moreover, she serves as the artistic director of the Yunshuyachi Ensemble in Taiwan.
