Introduction
Hello, my name is MaKenzie Sebastian and I am a fourth year student at Central Michigan University. I am currently working towards my Bachelors degree in Business Communications. I am still unsure of what exactly my future plans are,  but I hope to work somewhere in the project management field. With this blog I hope to further my communication skills by expressing my thoughts in a scholarly outlet; in addition to connecting with my fellow classmates through a new medium.
A company I believe has a great use of their social platform is “Netflix”. The company knows its audience, and makes sure to target its campaigns to the people they know will receive it the best(Millenials and GenZ). This explains  their frequent memes and niche tweets on their twitter account. These tweets are meant for a group of individuals who enjoy the content then share it among their mutuals, thus providing free advertisement for Netflix as it is continually spread across the internet. This online presence also reaches broad audiences to get them hyped over new movies and shows coming out soon, offering a refreshing form of media to create buzz for upcoming projects.

Week 1 Blog
Howdy. My name is Mark Cox. I am a Senior here at Central Michigan University. I am a Marketing major with a minor in Information Systems. I am from a small town called Romulus, just 30 minutes south of Detroit. There I own Grindline Training and Fitness, a small private gym. I have managed our gym for the past 5 years. I am excited to take this class because I feel that I can learn more about social media, which can help with both personal and business profiles. In my future, I either see myself working in marketing for a big company or owning my own business.
For people into streetwear, you know about Supreme. For those who don’t, it’s a streetwear brand that was founded in New York. The word “Supreme” itself is what makes the company their money. They slap a Supreme box logo on a hoodie and sell it for hundreds. Supreme makes clothing, footwear, and other miscellaneous items, such as a Supreme crowbar, a Supreme guitar, and even Supreme tooth brushes. For some reason, the public and social media influencers love them. One big factor of the Supreme brand is that they release merchandise in low quantities, so they deem rare. Their online auctions can sell out in just minutes.
Supreme uses social media to their advantage. They release pictures of some items releasing in the next drop, creating excitement and hype from the followers. Influencers and fans see the post and think “Those are cool, I want those”. This then in turn draws a huge crowd to their auctions.
Supreme’s IG: https://www.instagram.com/supremenewyork/
Supreme’s Website: https://www.supremenewyork.com/
P.s. this is my first time using Tumblr, so the platform is completely new to me. And I also don’t own any Supreme, I’m not going to spend $400 on a sweatshirt haha.

Spreading of Fake News
The algorithms used on today’s internet and social platforms are very powerful and only improving. These algorithms can be used in good ways like on google when you search something it usually gives you the most popular or the most helpful sources.
Advertising has gotten aggressive since social media came along. I say thing because you can’t scroll peacefully or even watch a video without running into some type of advertisement. The worst part of advertisement is the clickbait which is mostly seen on YouTube. Most small YouTubers use clickbait to get more attention to their page to increase their number of views. They may use a caption like “man gets carried out by a dog in a burning house!!”, but when you watch the video that’s not what happened.
The internet has a way of limiting its users to what they get as a result of searching for something or just being on social media platforms. Like in the article “Three reasons junk news spread so quickly across social media,” we will be exposed to a specific information. Business should be prepared to cope with the fake news that may arrive through social media. If fake viral news does arrive, they should respond to it by immediately clearing it up for people on the internet. People on social media should be aware by now not to believe everything they see on social media.

Building a Community
After reading the assigned chapters on online community building, it seems to me that those strategies are very similar to in-person community building. However, they are just executed in different ways online.
The definition of a community is, “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.”
The definition of an online community is, “a group of people with common interests who use the Internet (web sites, email, instant messaging, etc) to communicate, work together and pursue their interests over time.”
As we can see, the definitions are incredibly similar; the ends are the same, but the means are different. Because the means are different, there are some specific strategies that can be beneficial when building an online community.
1. Give it some time.
Like any sort of relationship, it can take time to build and develop effectively. Something that many online contributors lack is patience: you need to let your users have a chance to get to know you online, and find those niches that the community has in common. The online community definition includes the words, “pursue...interests over time.” Nothing great is built overnight.
2. Don’t be afraid to invite.
Many campaigns remain internal, and basically hidden from users that would fit very well into a community. Never be afraid to send out an email, advertise a little bit, and reach your market in an efficient way. Part of building community is the building part, and to do that, you can’t stray away from different methods of recruiting.
3. Decide and Commit.
If you decide to start building a community you need to commit to it. It takes a routine effort to create a community that users can depend on and look forward to checking out. The facilitator needs to use consistent posting strategies, integrating photos and other media to keep users engaged. If you’re going to decide to do it, decide to do it right.

Week 2: Blog 2, Social Media Experiment
When I completed my social media long and screen time usage for part one of this assignment I was really surprised to see how much time I had actually spend in front of a screen. I don’t really ever post anything of my own on social media so I thought my total usages would be a lot lower than the average person, but I was wrong.
I decided include things like Google Chrome, Blackboard, my CMICH email, and Microsoft Word into my log because I thought I spent the majority of my screen time on things like homework and taking notes during class, but compared to my social media usage the time was roughly the same (4 hours on laptop for school, 4 hours on the phone).
After logging myself I realized there wasn't much I could do about time spent on my laptop for school work because they were things I had to do like homework, take notes, and answer emails (and I even had a lower amount of homework to do compared to a normal day), so I decided to remove myself from certain media platforms for a day. When doing this I chose not to interfere with my Snapchat usages because this is how I communicate with my friends, especially friends who don’t attend CMU. However, I did decide to delete Instagram and TikTok from my phone for the day and the results of my screen time for the day were shocking.
When I recorded my log during day 1, I spent about 3 hours total on social media. After I had made some changes, I only spent 50 minutes total on social media. I also decided to log my TV time in day one, which came out to be roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes. During day 2, I cut out all TV time and decided to read a book before bed instead of watching Netflix; this reduced another kind of screen time entirely. All in all, reduced my screen time to about 1 hour and 30 minutes, compared to day 1 which logged in as 4 hours and 30 minutes.
This experience has helped me realize I really do need to separate myself from my phone more than I thought, and that my day will be more productive if I endure less screen time. I was actually in a more positive mindset during day 2 of the experiment and I think it was because I was living in the moment instead of living through my phone.

Week 5
Similar to algorithms many of these websites have been storing consumers information for years. Recently there have been multiple data breeches as well as companies selling their visitors information to other countries. Businesses can do their part to keep people safe by further securing the ares where data is stored, in addition to putting stricter security on their websites to avoid hacking and stolen information.
Consumers can keep themselves safe by being cautious of the websites they're visiting. They should also be selective with websites they put their personal information into, since they aren't 100% sure what the information will be used for, and who will have access to said info.
There are benefits to data being stored, since your information can easily be accessed anywhere you need it. Mentioned earlier, an additional benefit is algorithms and personalized ads. This is convenient so you have a personalized online experience with things you enjoy or that they can detect you may be in the market for.
There are many cons and benefits to data gathering. I think it's the responsibilities of the businesses to protect their websites and consumers. Then it's the general public's responsibility to be cautious with where they input their information, and what websites they allow to access their private profiles.

Big Data
Big data and algorithms have their pros and cons. Big data can be beneficial for lots of apps and other platforms because they can use the data to create ads for things that are relevant to your liking. You might do some online shopping then go on social media just scrolling and see something you were looking at or something from that specific website you were on. These are powerful tools for social media because their job is to keep you interested in your phone, they want you to engage as much as possible. So, they use the data to create ads or recommend you to someone who fits your characteristics. For an example, if you like a lot of sports pictures and follow athletes, they’re going recommend more athletes to follow not a famous artist or country singer. This data can potentially be leaked to outsiders in which they can then hack your social media pages or any other accounts you created on other websites or platforms.
But these algorithms can be making users addicted to social media. Like Tristan Harris stated it’s like a slot machine when it comes to technology and social media, you unlock your phone and never know what you expect to see. This is what keeps you attached to your phone like how people get attached to the casino machines. Like in The Social Dilemma, we need more people who see this as a problem and want to make the internet less addictive for users in society but still beneficial for investors. From a professional standpoint, businesses should implement a trustworthy system for employees and clients so that they know their information is secure.

Hi! I’m Emily (she/her). I’m 23, from Michigan, US. I’m not very good at these things so let’s see how this goes ;)
I’m currently an art student, with minors in music and art history. Art and music are huge parts of my life and my identity.
I LOVE nature and anything that has to do with plants, animals, the earth, etc. Nature is super important to me and I try to spend as much time outside as I can. I draw a lot of inspiration from the world around me. I want to travel all over (as soon as I’m not broke).
I’m super empathetic and I am greatly affected by the people I choose to surround myself with. I try to be kind to everyone I meet. I’m really open-minded (also super liberal). I am a dedicated feminist, and constantly trying to educate myself on important issues.
I’m looking for a new friend to exchange snail mail and maybe some art/small packages. Someone around my age would be preferable, no younger than 18 please. Gender doesn’t matter. I think I would prefer someone in the US, simply to keep postage down. But don’t let that deter you from contacting me! I’m looking for someone who has some similarities with me. I’m super open and will talk about anything. I love having deep conversations about life. I’d love to become really good friends. I’ll probably want to get to know you a little bit first before we start writing letters.
I’m not always the best at writing back super quickly. But I’m going to try my best! I’ve had other pen pals in the past, but they always seem to fade away. I’m looking for someone who is committed! I love getting to know new people and hearing their stories.
Fun Fact: My hair has been every color except black and brown. Right now it’s pink!
Please please please don’t hesitate to reach out to me! Feel free to ask me anything! The best ways are probably:
Email: swier1et @ cmich . edu
or Insta: swierzy56
I look forward to meeting you!
