tbh I think all textfics are inherently OOC bc we don’t text like we talk; we’re often braver, funnier, sharper. we adopt a persona. our gifs and emojis become part of our personality. we codeshift depending on recipient. it’s a really fun sandbox to play in when you’re chronically online.

I do think its smart to pivot from leftwhistles like our fave buzzwords, they all have synonyms that are conceptually identical

Like how its possible to just not use pronouns at all, grammatically, which avoids triggering all these [redacted] xoomers who [redacted]-out when they dont like someones pronouns, which can be a useful codeshift, if it is at all worth maintaining that code contextually (signs point to yes, but also thats like, conditional...you can keep the option open if its an option you can keep open, type thing...obv youre in a bind if these people are your only providers.... so many people in that situation are too depressed and hypnotized to do anything to build alternatives into their lives.... tangentially: of course their captors see anything that gives them hope/confidence as threatening)(chimpmen like trump have browbeaten the world into apocalypse apparently)

So you said before that AU code can be infectious and potentially start warping you to fit the normal of that AU, does that mean if Dust or Killer hung around a bara AU they'd grow into a bara themself?

Not quite, their forms are mostly fixed in size. They might get more pronounced fangs maybe, but sized to suit them.

What truly terrifies me are those moments when I nearly forget to code shift when changing between social media platforms. For example, my aunt shared some meme thing of fake/funny health tips and one was like “stick kale up your bum” and I nearly commented”

Ten minutes into the first episode of The Interview With the Vampire on AMC, my wife slapped the pause button to yell about the Reconstruction Era, the Redemption Era (which sounds horrible) and sociolinguistics. (They’re taking a class on Charles W. Chesnutt, who was a fascinating person. He lived and wrote short stories in the era in which the show is set and was 7/8ths white; despite that, his parents were legally considered “free people of color” and he himself identified as a Black man in an era when doing so was hugely disadvantageous to do so.) 

My review of the episode is much less complex and mostly in awe of Sam Reid, the actor who plays Lestat, and Jacob Anderson, who plays Louis. They are both so, so good, especially Reid. Anderson has to do the heavy lifting as Louis and his role is a lot less showy: Louis codeshifts constantly between scenes where he’s with his family, the arrogant white businessmen with whom he rubs elbows, and Lestat, and you don’t notice the work Anderson is doing unless you’re paying attention to the way he talks in all those different situations. Which you do if you’re married to a linguist. :)

But Sam Reid as Lestat...sublime. He’s so in love and he’s such a monster. He punches through a man’s head and instead of recoiling you lean in because you’re more fascinated than you are horrified, just like Louis.

One thing jowhatthefuck rowling got right was that wizards are dumb as shit about anything but silly spells and stuff, they have no structural analysis to fall back on, they use magic to get around doing manual labor, and realistically they dont even know how to aim anything more difficult targettingwise than a flamethrower

In the vamp chron, yknow, like, Le Vampire Chronicles, the way theyre vampires is this stupid convoluted thing with a demon who sort of marvel universe-style venom-fuses with akasha, who sires others by pozing them with demon-inhabited blood, basically.
