A year back in Florida
About a year ago, I moved away from the San Francisco Bay Area, back to Tampa Bay, Florida, where I’d lived for (mostly) all my previous life.
Florida is not the same place it was when I left. The metros feel more urban, more alive, than I remember. Some of that is undoubtedly on me, on my failure to explore them adequately back in the 1990s. But a lot of what I’ve been finding now simply wasn’t there two decades ago. St. Petersburg now has blocks of walkable downtown, starting from the waterfront museums and moving west through the Edge District, on to Kenwood and Grand Central, where they recently held one of the biggest Pride festivals in the country. Tampa’s downtown no longer feels like they roll up the sidewalks at five (a problem that San Jose struggled to solve for years as well). Just like St. Pete’s Central Avenue reminds me—a little—of K and J Streets in midtown Sacramento, smaller towns like Gulfport and Dunedin remind me—a little—of the smaller walkable towns back in California like Danville, Campbell, and Livermore.
Some of the areas that were truly nothing twenty years ago have become, well, something. The town I’ve moved to, Ridge Manor, is an unincorporated area a few miles north of still-tiny Dade City, on a state road that goes straight east-west between I-75 and Orlando. The next “big small town” over, Clermont, has blossomed from a near-abandoned downtown into a genuinely interesting suburb, even if it’s hard to figure out just what it’s a suburb of. Wesley Chapel, about a half-hour south along I-75, is a surprisingly large suburb of Tampa now.
A year ago, I wrote that you can find great coffee shops and craft breweries and cocktail bars in any metro area, and that’s true here, too. Dade City itself has a great craft brewery and a solid coffee shop, and there are far more throughout Tampa/St. Pete and Orlando. Great cocktail bars are the hardest to find here, I’ve found, but they are here.
Florida is not the same place it was when I left. It was, back then, a relatively purple state overall. There are still Florida liberals and leftists, but the Florida of 2023 is a one-party state. And, not to put too fine a point on it, Florida Republicans lead the charge to make that party indistinguishable from the far-right fascist parties plaguing Europe and Central America. Every day brings a new attack on the rights of people DeSantis and his supporters have identified as The Enemy. Trans people. Queer people. Drag queens. Immigrants. Teachers. Librarians. Disney.
A drive around rural Florida a quarter-century ago would have certainly taken you past houses and farms flying confederate battle flags; the state’s panhandle has long been an epicenter for the neo-confederate movement. On a similar drive today, though, the flags are almost exclusively for Trump. And there are many, many flags for Trump. Flags and bumper stickers and banners, and an ugliness I can’t remember seeing in America in my lifetime. When I left Florida, Jeb Bush had just won reelection; I’ve returned to a state where Republicans would consider Jeb too suspiciously liberal to elect him to a municipal utility board.
I am not in the same place in Florida as I was when I left. Politically and culturally, I’m more Left Coast than I had been two decades ago, to be sure—but I spent most of my previous Florida years in Tampa or its suburbs, or the wealthy, culturally rich city of Sarasota.1 As someone who presents as a cishet male, I have little to worry about in most interactions here yet—but that yet slowly gathers weight. I’ve been open about my beliefs, moderately open about my not-so-binary, fairly asexual identity. I write queer, often political, furry fiction under my own name. So far, this has only resulted in lost friendships, but the potential for worse is real.
Yet my worries don’t center on me. The majority of my friends are queer, too. Will any trans friend, including my BFF/partner, be safe here even for a visit? They’re certainly not going to move here. More and more, I’m hearing of people moving out.
I am not in the same place in Florida as I was when I left. All my adult life, both in California and previously here, I could reach dozens of choices for shopping, eating and drinking in under fifteen minutes; some were just a nice walk away in good weather. But Ridge Manor’s several thousand residents spread out over rural half-acre lots. A few businesses cluster in a couple of strip malls around the I-75 interchange. There’s a grocery store, three or four decent restaurants (and three or four fast food places), so-so Chinese takeout, and a few gas stations. Anything else is twenty minutes away at a minimum.
That might not sound like a big deal. It didn’t sound like one to me, either. I’d come home to this house every Christmas from California; I knew where it was. And, I’ve always enjoyed driving. For years, my BFF and I took Saturdays out, exploring towns hours away. How bad could this be?
The answer, it turns out, is worse than I thought. In all my adult life, I’ve lived where I could reach dozens of choices for shopping, eating and drinking in under fifteen minutes, often in places where some were just a nice walk away in good weather. Now, hitting even most standard suburban chains is no longer a whim, it’s an excursion.
Sometimes I’ve dreamt of living in a cabin in Big Sur. I don’t anymore. I want to be in walking distance of something, a short driving distance of anything. Markets, coffee shops, a neighborhood bar, an ice cream parlor. Ridge Manor is not a place where that’s possible, and despite the construction and development around the area, it never will be. Yes, it will get hundreds of new tract homes, but the people who move in there will find that they, too, are a half-hour away from everything.
But do I regret moving? No. I moved to be with my mother, to help take care of her and the house. Our relationship isn’t frictionless, but it’s good, better than many such relationships that I see among my own friends and, for that matter, among hers. I know her better now than I have at any previous point in my life. It’s not just a solid, loving parent-child relationship, it’s a solid, loving friendship. That’s invaluable.
I still take Saturdays out, albeit mostly by myself now, and I’ve discovered or re-discovered plenty of cool places, many of which weren’t here before and all which have changed. There are places I could truly feel at home in, if I lived closer to them, and if Florida’s politics ever become less fraught. And if I can still deal with Florida summers.
The what-ifs remain, though, no matter how much I try to shunt them away.
First what-if: My ability to carve out my own time has been markedly impaired over the last year, from writing to TV watching to reading. Perhaps I am not good at setting boundaries, or perhaps I am just not used to living with someone who wants a lot of attention compared to past, undemanding housemates. Would it have been better to live in the suburbs a half-hour down the road, drive up here a few times a week for dinner, spend the night every other week?
Never say never, but I’m doubtful. The connections I’ve been making with my mom couldn’t have been made if we weren’t living together. Beyond that, I wouldn’t be here to be able to help with routine small things, and helping with large ones would be that much more challenging. She’d be markedly lonelier, and despite my penchant for solitude, I would be, too.
And there’s the cost of living. Despite the isolation, there are many things to like about this house—it’s on over an acre of wooded land, for a start—but the number one thing is, simply, that it’s fully paid off. A year ago, I wrote, “I won’t miss paying as much in rent share [in California] as I would pay for an entire two-bedroom apartment in Tampa.” That turned out to be optimistic; a decent one-bedroom, not two, apartment in Wesley Chapel would be hundreds more a month than my rent share in Santa Clara was. The median rent in Sacramento is, as of this writing, lower than both Tampa and Orlando.
Second what-if: my mother and I could move somewhere else, somewhere that checks off more of my boxes and, ideally, more of hers. She’d like to be closer to amenities, closer to medical care, closer to the water. We’re both concerned about the heat, too. As I write this, Florida swelters in record-breaking heat. The SF Bay Area and Sacramento are at unusual highs, too, but the old “it’s a dry heat” joke hits home. Sacramento’s projected high of 103°F tops our projected 94°, but our heat index hits 116° compared to Sac’s 164°—and our low will be 74° (with a heat index ten degrees higher), whereas Sacramento will make it down to a comparatively arctic 58°. If this is the new normal, it may be untenable for both of us.
Housing prices anywhere we’d want to live are likely to be challengingly high even with our resources pooled together, though, and I don’t know what place we’d both agree on. Stay in the state, or leave it? She thinks about going back to Baltimore, where she grew up, or around Asheville, where Floridians seem to be moving to when they want to leave this state. I have no personal affinity for Maryland or North Carolina, though; the places I do have affinity for—most of California and the Pacific Northwest, parts of the Southwest—aren’t places she does.
The thought of moving anywhere, though, leads to uncomfortable thoughts of mortality—both my mother’s and my own. When will I find myself living alone once more? Will I want to stay where I’m living then? If it’s still here, still in this house, the answer is likely no. But if my mother and I move to a new place, she’ll push for a bigger house. I doubt I’d want a bigger house by myself, or even with a housemate. (And if it’s in Florida, the current politics all but ensure my trans BFF won’t be that housemate.)
Of course, maybe a bigger house still makes financial sense; with luck, having a more expensive house means I get more money if I sell it and do move somewhere else, ultimately. The money isn’t being lost. Objectively, I know that. But I don’t feel it.
So, where does this leave me? It leaves me with a loving parent and great finances; it leaves me isolated, frustrated with my inability to manage my own time, wondering why I’m even worse than I used to be at coordinating with friends. It leaves me in a good and bad place. It leaves me in limbo.
I’ll check back in after another year.
Sarasota is now ground zero for not just Florida’s culture wars but all of America’s, as the home of the neofascist Moms of Liberty and epicenter of QAnon conspiracy nonsense. My college, New College, is the one that DeSantis is in the process of transforming from a nationally-recognized liberal arts school into a national laughing stock. [return]

Welcome!
Hello! My name is Abbie Perigo, but you can call be Abbs :)
A Little Bit About My Back Story
I am 21 years old, and I originated in Wolverine Lake, Michigan. Though I only have one sister, I come from a big family with a lot of extended family as well. I gather with the many parts of my family often and enjoy spending time with them, doing things like family dinner/card nights and a lot of traveling. This year, we plan to get the whole family together down in Sarasota, FL for Christmas and New Years. As hectic as family time may get with this bunch, I am very grateful to be able to do these things with them and I really appreciate the moments we get to share.
Tumblr media
What Have I Been Up To?
Currently, I am a senior at Central Michigan University, studying entrepreneurship, hospitality, and thinking about adding interior design to the list. I am a member of Tri-Sigma sorority, which gives me many opportunities to participate in fundraising and volunteering for good causes. There may be a high chance you see me rollerblading around campus, or possibly at the local haunts around Mount Pleasant. I live off campus in a duplex with four other amazing girls, and even with only two bathrooms, it couldn’t be more fun! The two people we share the duplex with above, are also a blast; we all tend to stay up all night listening to music, chatting each other’s ears off, and eating midnight snacks (if we aren't up late studying for classes instead).
Tumblr media
Ideas Of My Future
I have always wanted to be my own boss, that’s where the love of entrepreneurship surfaced. It wasn’t until late one night, my freshman year, I realized what I wanted to do. Creating a space for people to escape, where they can really relax and let go of the outside stressors in the real world. Not even just a vacation; a luxury spa getaway. In addition, I have always been a people pleaser, so helping others and being a part of the service industry always drew me in. Working up to that large goal, I want to begin with some vacation rentals up north, a coffee shop/water store, and of course, running the business I currently operate. It definitely wasn’t easy, generating these ideas for my future as an undergraduate, with my quickly running imagination.
The business I recently became a part of last year, called Enagic, is more about selling myself and the story of how I joined the business, then actually about selling the products; essentially, the products sell theirselves. It’s getting people to make the decision to take the next step in bettering their health and changing their lives, by simply just replacing their water source.
Tumblr media
A Little More About Me
My big three in astrology are Aries, Cancer and Sagittarius, and I love being outside in the heat of the sunshine, preferably on a beach somewhere. Me and my boyfriend, Jake, have two kittens that love the outside as well, sometimes a little too much. They are brother and sister named Jax (Missy) and Mookie, and sometimes travel with the two of us around the state. Me and Jake have been together for over six years now, yes six, and looking back on those years makes it feel like time may have pressed the fast forward button. But you know what they say, time flies when you’re having fun!

WRITING AND RESEARCH
As an introduction, tell us one little known fact about you:
Hello, my name is Gabrielle and I work in the emergency room at Sarasota Memorial as an EMT while going to nursing school. Even though my career path does not involve art, it still is incorporated in everyday life. Art is seen on the street, in people's homes, on the walls of restaurants or coffee shops, even on people skin. For me art is always an interesting site to explore.
Five facts about assigned artist or the artwork:
Banksy began his career as part of a graffiti crew in Bristol by the name of DryBreadZ Crew or DBZ.
Banksy’s works often take the form of multi-layered stencils combined with media sources. He incorporates objects already within his chosen canvas such as street signs or fire hydrants.
Banksy spent the month of October 2013 in New York, unveiling a new piece of work every day.
Banksy’s artworks have appeared in Australia, France, Italy, the United States, Canada, Jamaica, and Israel, and are instantly protected.
Banksy refuses to be interviewed, their identity is still unknown.
Did the way you think about the art change from the first time you looked at it? Do you see anything different in the art now?
The art did change for me from the first time I looked at it. After learning a few things about the artist, I was able to see how they normally incorporate more than just a wall into their graffiti works of art. Extending the piece onto the car in front of the wall gives the look an interesting and authentic aesthetic. I also like how pieces within the picture are unconventional which makes it unique.
ART AND WRITING
Tumblr media
This piece of art hanging against this reddish orange wall in my dining room. It is a painting on a canvas that was a gift from a friend. It reminds me of a dinner I visit in New York City with my family. I think it is beautiful, all the small details such as the candles lit on the tables outside. The color choices also have enough cohesion to make the piece flattering yet also small details pop out.
WRITING A SELF-PORTRAIT
How old are you? 27
What is the gender you primarily align with? Female
Where are you from? Sarasota, Florida
What is your ethnicity? White, with Puerto Rican and Irish family.
What do you do for fun? I enjoy spontaneous adventures, paddle boarding or staying in bed watching movies with my animals.
Are you a member of any organized group? No

What makes you uniquely you? I believe I am an easy going, humble person willing to give anything a chance.

Very OOC
( and unless you’re looking for restaurants in Orlando, you should probably keep scrolling. In response to you @fair-fae - here is a list, as the reply box would probably scream at me if I tried to type this all there  sorry for the late response as well, I had to finish up my roulettes /cry )
My favorite, by far, is Soupa Saiyan - a DBZ themed noodle shop. It’s super small, with somewhat limited seating, but you don’t have to call in advanced or anything. It’s just a little cramped. But everyone is incredibly nice, the food is amazing, and really large portions too (so I’d recommend bringing someone to share with if you don’t think you can finish it yourself ). 5689 Vineland Rd, Orlando, FL 32819 - Their hours are a little wonky too. They open at noon each day, but I think they take an hour break around 2 or 3 for lunch.
The Cloak and Blaster is a nerdy pub with some pretty good bar food, and amazing drinks - if that’s your thing. At around... 7? Every Thursday, is a trivia night (so I guess that’s something to do, too!). It’s 18+ only after 8pm, but they have a lounge full of board games and video games for everyone to share and play. They have events lined up as well! But they are closed on Mondays, just a forewarn. 875 Woodbury Rd, Ste 108, Orlando, FL 32828
Cafe Tu Tu Tango is like a... Spanish and Greek fusion? That’s like, the best description I have for it. They’ve got live entertainment and support local artists by allowing the artists to both sell and display their artwork in the building. (And hey, if you’ve ever wanted to try gator, it’s on the menu). The meals are like... shareable appetizer-styles, so you don’t have to worry too much about big portions. 8625 International Drive, Orlando, Florida 32819 - They’re open pretty late, and also have brunches, so if you’re an early bird or a night owl, they’ll likely be open for you.
Sweet tooth? Better Than Sex is a dessert restaurant, literally all they serve are desserts and alcohol. It’s mostly a date night attraction, but look, if you’re craving a good cheesecake or espresso and ladyfingers, it doesn’t matter. Get a fuckin’ cake my dude, it’s good. Also their entire menu are innuendos and sex puns, and for an immature mind like mine, it’s fun to look at. 1905 N. Orange Ave, Orlando, FL 32804  - They’re closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and they open at 6pm until midnight every other night. Reservations are heavily suggested, especially on weekends. But I’d say it’s pretty worth it. It is an 18+ only establishment, as probably guessed.
Keke’s is a Florida only business chain, that serves breakfast and brunch. If you’re familiar with places like that, you’ll know they open pretty early around 6 or 7am, and close in the early afternoon around 2pm. But their pancakes are amazing, and I’d highly recommend going at least once. There are a lot of them in Orlando, so the link will have the hours of every location - just to find the closest one to you.
Okay, okay... it’s not a restaurant. But if you haven’t been to Twistee Treat, you need to go now. It’s like one of those ice cream places that once you have a taste, you’ll probably end up going back every fuckin day until you leave - then crave for ice cream as good as it, and never finding it wherever you live. (It was the same for me and Dutch Bros. here - once you have their coffee, there’s no going back to any other place). It’s literally just an outdoor ice cream stand - and if you don’t know what to get, you honestly cannot go wrong with a chocolate-vanilla twist in a cake cone. This is also one with a lot of locations around Florida (and while they have some in Houston, it’s a FL business). So the link to their website will have the locations closest to where you are.
If you’re in Universal - the Universal Studios City Walk has a lot of unique restaurants for you to visit. Granted, they’ll be a bit pricier, but there’s a few there you shouldn’t miss out on.  And if you’re in Disney, Disney Springs (once known as Downtown Disney), has *a lot* of restaurants, things to do, and stores. Cirque du Soleil is there as well, if you haven’t seen it yet. It’ll be a little bit confusing to just jump in, so I recommend a map first before going.
There’s probably a lot of others to see, but these are the ones I can recommend off the top of my head. @yiff-yiff-for-phan maaayy have more? Frendo, if you recall anything from Orlando that I don’t, that’d be helpful.
Now if you need help for Tampa, Sarasota, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Ocala, or Fort Myers/Cape Coral - I am your guy! So if you don’t mind travel outside of Orlando, I can definitely help there!

VIRTUAL SKETCHBOOK 1
Pictures are in order of assignment.
1. WRITING AND RESEARCH -
A fact about me is that I love to play Dungeons & Dragons. I play a little gnome on some days and a big half-orc on others.
The art work assigned to me was The Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Japanese artist Hokusai.
1.     This piece of art, sometimes known simply as The Wave, is part of a 36-piece series that all feature Mount Fuji under different weather conditions.
2.     The Wave is not a painting, which I always assumed it was. It is actually a woodblock print.
3.     Hokusai began creating art when he was only six years old, when he learned to paint, and branched off to different mediums from there.
4.     The boats in these paintings are depictions of the boats that had been used to transport fish between land masses. In each boat, there are eight people manning them. It is implied that they had been heading back home with fish before the formation of the large wave in question.
5.     Hokusai changed his pen name 30 different times throughout his career. With each name change, he allowed a student of his to assume his former name.
Researching this art did change the way I looked at it. Before, I never really took notice of the boats, and I never realized there were people inside the boats. Before realizing this, looking at The Wave always gave me a sense of peace; I love the ocean, and the color blue always makes me feel calm. While I still feel this way, I do also feel a new sense of urgency and impending danger with this new information, and I now see the fear from the rowers clinging to their oars.
 2. ART AND WRITING – Pictured above is a drawing that a friend of mine drew of one of my Dungeons & Dragons characters. It was made using pencil and paper, and it currently hangs on my wall over my desk. It’s important to me, because I recently (last week) moved very far away from all of my close friends. Looking at this drawing reminds me of all of the fun times we had playing D&D together and going out for midnight breakfast afterwards. It helps me feel better when I get homesick, and it reminds me that even though I’m far away from my friends now, I still have them as friends and I will get to see them again in the future. I wouldn’t say that the drawing itself is innately beautiful, since it’s a really simple sketch, but I do see beauty in the memories that it holds. The fact that something so simple can hold so much significance is really astounding to me.
3. WRITING A SELF-PORTRAIT – I am 21 years old, I’m white, and I’m nonbinary. I’m from Sarasota, Florida- born and raised. This recent move is the first time I’ve ever lived anywhere else! In my free time, aside from my all-consuming love for tabletop games, I like to weight lift, swim, hike, sew, draw, and sing. My tabletop groups are currently the only organized groups that I am a part of, but I hope to join more soon so I can meet new people. I’m between jobs right now, but I want to pursue a job as a pharmacy tech or a barista at a local coffee shop. Many things make me uniquely me, but I think what stands out the most is that I am very opinionated, I’m a bit of an organizational freak, and I have a unique sense of humor.
 4. ART PROJECT (SELF-PORTRAIT) – I have elected to make a collage for my self portrait. The background includes two pride flags and a floral design, things that I feel embody some of the foundations of my identity. The collage also includes sharks, which are my favorite animal and a symbol of misrepresented “ugly” animals whose conservation are just as important as “cuter” animals who get more representation. I’ve also included bats, because they share a similar “ugly animal” plight and I also really love Halloween. The cats, while silly, perfectly embody both my sense of humor and my connection to my emotions. I am a highly emotional person and even my negative feelings (anger, sadness, pride, etc.) I have learned to embrace as a part of myself, and I do often choose to express those emotions through humor. Lastly, of course, D&D is in the center of my collage because of how important it is to me. It gives me a medium to  express creativity and explore more of my personality, and I have met many of my best friends through playing. The symmetry of the collage symbolizes my need for organization.

NEW FLIGHTS TO SARASOTA-BRADENTON AIRPORT (SRQ)
With Low Fares to High Demand Destinations
The Sarasota/Bradenton International airport is one of my favourite airports. It is convenient, only 15 minutes from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals-601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217, but that’s only one reason I love SRQ. This airport is so inviting with its friendly and welcoming staff. It is small, modern, clean, with comfortable seating and Free strong/super fast wi-fi. The airport is easy to navigate which for me completely takes away the dread associated with large airports. The baggage area is easy to find and the car rentals are in the same area. These last two are both very favourable considerations, especially if your vacation leave is only one week. Less time spent travelling, means more time spent enjoying the reason that you are here, your vacation.
So what’s not to love about SRQ? Some travellers complain that there are very few airlines that fly into SRQ and those airlines that do, require a transfer or stopover along the way. The limited number of restaurants and stores and their early closing hours, with some not open on the weekends. Another complaint is that there are not enough low budget airlines to book flights with.
Well, flying into the Sarasota/Bradenton airport (SRQ) just got easier as well as less expensive. Frontier Airline recently announced they will be offering direct, non-stop flights from Atlanta beginning December 10, 2018. Flights between Sarasota Bradenton International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will be offered three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. As an added bonus to this already great news, Frontier is offering special introductory fares as low as $39 each way!
This is the latest in a series of new destinations offered via budget airlines. Earlier this year, SRQ and Frontier announced new non-stop flights to Cleveland and to Philadelphia. Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and Frontier Airlines will provide the service to Cleveland and Philadelphia beginning in December. The flights to Philadelphia International Airport begin on December 10, 2018 with flights offered Mondays and Fridays. In April of this year, Allegiant launched its first Sarasota routes, flying to Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
Since the addition of Allegiant and Frontier to the airport this year, traffic numbers are increasing. According to airport authorities July saw a 30 percent increase in passenger traffic, with a 23 percent increase in June, and a 16 percent increase in May. So, what will SRQ do to keep up with this increased traffic flow? The airport authority has authorized the expenditure of $228,501, plus a 10 percent contingency, to install 148 more feet of baggage belt in three locations in the terminal. Also, airport officials are beginning to think about overflow parking this winter and the long-term possibility of adding a parking garage. With the growth of SRQ airport bringing in increased revenue to area businesses I’m sure we will be hearing news of many improvements over the next few years.

Recent Yelp Reviews —
What a great airport! I always think the small ones have the best customer service, since they’re not nearly as busy as the large ones. This airport is super clean & that includes the bathrooms – which is always a plus! The women’s restrooms come with an additional shelf for your purse or bag – which is ALWAYS appreciated :)There’s a small selection of places to eat/drink past security. But it’s sufficient and does include a Starbucks! Gates have lots of charging stations in the seating area so you aren’t searching for a place to plug in (or have to sit on the floor in the corner). Ride-sharing is clearly labeled so if you need an Uber or Lyft it won’t be complicated to find where to go. And there are plenty of people waiting to pick you up so you won’t wait forever in the heat. Overall, I love flying in here – stress free & clean!
It’s got everything you need for a tiny airport – 1 coffee shop & a restaurant before security and the same on the other side.  As someone who use to fly every week for 5 years, this little airport is growing but still super easy to get in and out of.  Only way to make it better would be the parking shuttles frequency but so long as it isn’t raining ya a very easy walk. Overall very clean and friendly airport
Very small airport yet so simple. Time frame from entrance to boarding gate was about 40 minutes. Air mall is practically non existant. There is a Starbucks and one bar which included very little seating. Overall it went smoothly
Tiny airport, no lounges, very limited eating and drinking options, but very helpful staff from check-in to boarding.
This is a great airport, easy in and out. Now parking is even better since the addition of the covered area.
