students !!   ... we tried to avoid being in this part of the world during hurricane season, but it snuck up too quickly. unfortunately, we had to veer a little off course. don’t panic !  the ship will be safe ... but until this hurricane passes, it is NOT safe to be on the ocean. or on the ship. or outdoors.
luckily, we were able to secure enough hotel rooms in a nearby fictional hotel in puntarenas, costa rica, for all of our students !   for the next few days, all students will be staying in the el ensueño tower. we were able to get a good late minute rate due to the hotel’s ... um ... reputation for ... hauntings ...
although you cannot go outside, you will have access to the hotel’s billiards room, restaurant, gym, pool  ( mysterious wet footprints appear in the halls sometimes, )  bar, lobby with chess & checkers, tea room, library & puzzle room. you will also be sharing a room with 1-2 students. your rooming assignments are listed below. use this for plotting and thread purposes. have fun with it. get to know some new folk.
room 809: parker, evie, feli room 811: bentley, zephyr room 824: scout, briar, axel room 830: mason, ophelia room 834: fable, brandon, aria room 835: celeste, mac ( there has been rumors that at 1-4am, you can hear the sounds of children laughing and running up and down the halls on the 8th floor )
room 907: keisha, james, liam room 908: micah, sawyer, vanida room 909: blair, matias, athena room 911: sierra, colin, jewel room 915: ruby, lexie, natalie ( there has been rumors that at night, you can see apparitions behind you in the mirror and bathroom pipes turn on and off by themselves on the 9th floor )
room 1003: teddy, ryan room 1004: duckie, kat, luna room 1005: carter, jai room 1010: dakota, cameron, kal room 1011: romeo, brooke, cleo ( there has been rumors that when you leave and return to your room, your clothes and other items may mysteriously be moved around on the 10th floor )

ALL STARTERS THROUGH SUNDAY, MAY 23RD SHOULD TAKE PLACE INSIDE THE HOTEL AND BE TAGGED WITH #SEASEVENT.  as always, behave students. don’t do anything stupid. please like this post once read. sincerely, dean murphy

FitzSimmons headcanons that live in my mind rent free
Academy Days:
During their time at the Academy, there were SEVERAL times they both fell asleep in one of their beds because they were up so late studying/working on projects.
like they hung out in each other’s dorms all. the. time (except when they were in the lab)
Jemma always sat in the front row in the classroom.
Fitz never did (except if it was a class him and Jemma had together, then he was right there next to her).
After FS became friends, they, without fail, would bring the other up in every conversation they had with their parents.
So much so that both sets of parents became suspicious (in a good way) of the other young cadet their child was spending all their time with.
When Mrs. Fitz met Jemma for the first time, she IMMEDIATELY loved her.
Mr. and Mrs. Simmons felt the same way about Fitz after meeting him for the first time.
Both sets of parents eventually got each other's numbers and definitely talked about their kids and how they shipped them together.
Growing up, Fitz took apart and put back together nearly every machine/contraption in their house
However, Mrs. Fitz didn't mind... most of the time.
Skip ahead/Future:
FS had one other kid after Alya, probably another daughter.
The shield fam are Aunts/Uncles to the FS kids (Aunt Elena/YoYo, Uncle Mack, Aunt Daisy, Uncle Daniel, Aunt Bobbi, Uncle Lance/Hunter).
Except for May and Coulson who are more like a third set of grandparents.
The shield fam has a group chat with the whole team in it (Jemma, Fitz, Daisy, May, Coulson, Mack, Elena, Bobbi and Hunter).
Jemma constantly sends photos and videos of the kids to said group chat, and they demand more if she hasn’t sent any in a while.
The FS kids are 100% spoiled by the team.
Alya definitely had a monkey themed nursery when she was a baby.

WORRELL: IMF ONLY PART OF SOLUTION - Former Central Bank Governor Dr DeLisle Worrell is sticking to his guns. He is adamant that going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is only part of the solution to Barbados’ economic woes. With an IMF team due in Barbados this week, the economist yesterday insisted that Government also needed to send home public servants for the benefit of the economy. “The proposed retrenchment of public sector workers, which is a central element in my recommended strategy for economic prosperity in Barbados, would be funded by borrowing from international financial institutions,”he said. “A programme for reform of the public service would be among the conditions negotiated with the IMF and others. The local currency counterpart of some of the finance provided by the lenders could fund the retrenchment.” Worrell said the “retrenchment funds” could be used in various ways, including providing a cash grant, over and above other benefits they might be entitled to, to public servants who volunteer to leave”.Other uses were.
• to fund a top-up to full retirement benefits to anyone who retires early;
• to support funded retraining and further education for public workers who are retrenched;
• to provide grants and advisory services for all leaving officers who wish to start small enterprises;
• to provide personal and financial advisory services; and
• to provide a small fund and support services for any exceptional cases.
Worrell said public sector separations funded in this way would have economic benefits immediately and in the long run.  “The immediate benefit would be to avoid any dampening effect of retrenchment on the economy. All departing public workers would have the means to maintain their livelihoods. In addition, some would undoubtedly use severance funds to do home extension and repair, and others might take up farming or other enterprise,” he said. “The longer term benefit comes from the increase of productivity in the public service. There should be no fall in the quality or delivery of public services; in fact both quality and delivery should increase, with fewer but better qualified public servants.” He added that with fewer numbers, “this produces an improvement in the productivity of each worker. In addition, with lower numbers, senior public servants could be better paid, providing an incentive to attract talent into the service.” “The result would be public services that are better managed, improved morale within the public sector, and the recovery of Barbados’ reputation for efficient public administration,” Worrell added. He believe this would lead to “a marked improvement in Barbados’ ranking in the Global Competitiveness Report, and in the Doing Business Report”. “In such an environment we could expect renewed investment interest by foreign, regional and local investors, and a sustained boost to growth and jobs,” he said. (SS)
BRA GIVES TAX EXTENSION UNTIL JULY 9 – The Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) is granting a further extension until July 9 to corporate and business taxpayers for their June 2018 tax obligations. According to BRA Communications Officer, Erica Lazare, this move was made to afford more time to people, especially tax agents, in utilising the BRA’s recently launched online, integrated Tax Administration Management Information System (TAMIS). “Although the BRA is quite pleased with the over 8 000 registrations we received thus far in TAMIS, we made the decision to give an additional extension after engaging with our key stakeholders, the tax agents, who have the responsibility of registering, filing and making payments on behalf of thousands of their clients. They expressed the need for additional time to complete their clients' tax obligations in our new system,” she asserted. She added that employers, sole traders, corporations and business owners are therefore being urged by the Authority to ensure they take this opportunity to register in TAMIS in order to meet their tax deadlines. The tax returns and related payments due by July 9 are: Corporation Tax, PAYE, Withholding Tax, Premium Tax, Value Added Tax, National Social Responsibility Levy and Excise Tax.  (SS)
WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK, SAYS CO-OP – Outgoing president of the Barbados Workers’ Union Co-operative Credit Union, Dalton Medford, is charging that “what commercial banks are doing to poor people is almost criminal”. He was speaking to the media yesterday after the Co-op’s annual general meeting at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St Michael. “When you look around Barbados, and see what is happening with the commercial banks in terms of how they treat with poor people – paying almost next to nothing on deposits, while at the same time charging them fees for almost everything, I think it is almost – to use what the present Prime Minister has said about another thing – criminal for them to be doing that to us,” he charged. Medford, president for the last five years, said the 23 000-strong Co-op’s asset base currently stood at $138 million, a “great improvement”, and deposits were doing well. He described the rates as attractive and encouraged people to bring their loan business to the credit union. “Our average savings rate is 2.20 per cent, and we have term deposits as high as 4.5 per cent, which is about the best in the market. When you look around Barbados and see the amount of profits that commercial banks register, somebody has to tell them what they are doing to poor people is not good enough. So, at this stage, I want Barbadians to understand that the credit union movement is where they belong,” he said. Commercial bank rates on savings are as low as 0.01 per cent. The president also said it would cost just over $6 million to refurbish the headquarters on Fairchild Street, The City, a measure that could see the wealth of the members increased. “We hope the headquarters would represent to our members what working-class people can achieve once they work together,” he said. “The other big dream we have is to ensure that the headquarters is members-owned. We want to be able to do a perspective on it where . . . . we will set up a management company, which would be the credit union, and own 40 per cent, while the other 60 per cent would be sold to the members,” he said.  (SS)
EDEY VILLAGE BUS BLUES – Views are mixed in Edey Village, Christ Church, regarding the cancellation of the Transport Authority Service Integration (TASI) programme. But overall, residents are pleased. They said when the programme was working, they found themselves at a severe disadvantage. “It’s good the schoolchildren and old people will have to pay now because they used to crowd the van and we couldn’t get in. They had people from all around getting in we van and we in turn couldn’t even depend on the Transport Board bus as sometimes we had to wait hours for one,” said Valencia Small. TASI was an experimental project implemented two years ago by the then Democratic Labour Party Administration, allowing a small number of Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators to work routes such as Edey Village, Christ Church and Sturges, St Thomas, from the Fairchild Street Terminal. Government subsidised fares for schoolchildren and the elderly, just as with Transport Board buses, but with the culmination of the project, the PSVs will be going back to normal service, which means everyone boarding them will be charged and the vans will be departing from the Constitution River Terminal. Residents were already aware of this because they had been called to attend a meeting last Saturday at which it was all explained. Hortenze Small-Burton said she didn’t mind children paying fares again as she was against free bus fare for schoolchildren. Her only wish was that the vans could still operate from close to the bus terminal. Small-Burton also spoke of some of the horrors she went through trying to get home when the vans were off road for servicing. “One morning the van break down and we had to walk to Boarded Hall in St George and the other evening the van had to get new numbers from the Licensing Authority and I had to catch a different bus, get off at the old BET in Wildey and walk home because my bus like it wasn’t running,” she said. Shanta Gibson said she did not travel by public transport that often but knew how full the vans got, especially when the bus did not come, which was often. She said at least the vans were on time but added she heard they would soon be pulled altogether. “I was told the Government would be getting rid of the vans and replacing them with buses that ran out St George. I’m not sure how that will work because St George got problems too,” she said. Victor Gibson said he hoped TASI would have continued as moving between the bus terminal and the Constitution River Terminal could be a hassle for some, especially when it rained. Many residents said the vans were a godsend on mornings for those who had to get to work early.  Samantha Small told the Saturday Sun the people of Edey Village had formed a bond with the drivers but she, too, lamented how difficult it was for them to catch the vans on evenings. She hoped it would be easier on them. The other suggestions included allowing the Yorkshire bus to travel to the Edey Village route and letting the vans run later than 8 p.m. (SS)
CEO SEES BETTER DAYS FOR QEH – Health care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH)should show some improvement if the measures in Government’s Mini-Budget are realised, says that institution’s chief executive officer Dr Dexter James.  “This Government . . . has articulated policies that we have been advocating for the last seven or eight years [such as] the need for a new model of health care financing that has become a reality,” said James, referring to the new health service contribution (HSC). In her Mini-Budget, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced that a HSC of 2.5 per cent would be levied on insurable earnings effective October 1, with 1.5 per cent of it to be paid by employers and one per cent by employees. This tax is projected to raise $45 million in a full fiscal year to support the operations of the cash-starved QEH. Mottley also announced that the Randall Phillips Polyclinic in Oistins, Christ Church, and Winston Scott Polyclinic in Jemmotts Lane, The City, will be upgraded for about $3 million and will function on a 24-hour basis. This, the Prime Minister said, would take the burden off the QEH’s Accident & Emergency Department (A&E), which will receive an $11 million upgrade to raise its standards to deliver the highest quality of health care Barbados can provide. James intimated these measures were a move in the right direction. He said the additional $45 million funding would reduce the QEH’s reliance on the Government’s Consolidated Fund and provide the financial resources necessary to sustain services at the Martindales Road institution, which annually needs approximately $200 million to provide its services. Secondly, the longer hours for the polyclinics should see fewer non-urgent cases going to the A&E, which should allow the department to deal with emergencies and very serious cases, as it was intended to do. That would mean shorter waiting times for the critically ill. “The Budget measures will have significant implications for the public health system, and the transformation that will occur will see a shift in access to primary care services from the hospital to the polyclinics. This is what extending the existing hours of the polyclinic will achieve, once there are diagnostics and dispensing capabilities,” said James. He said though Barbados was going through tough times, “from where I sit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, we have been able to maintain the level and quality of services to the public even in these times of austerity”. In response to widespread concerns that he is set to leave Barbados’ lone tertiary health facility, James said he continued to discharge his responsibilities as CEO and was exceedingly pleased at the changes announced in the recent Budget and relished the challenges ahead. “As such, I have not resigned from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital,” James said. (SS)
BRANDED DRUGS TO REMAIN ON FORMULARY UNTIL GENERICS ARRIVE - The Ministry of Health has assured the public that, although the grace period for patients to receive certain branded pharmaceuticals under the Barbados Drug Service’s Special Benefit Scheme ends today, these pharmaceuticals will continue to be available under the Scheme until the replacement generic drugs arrive in the island. Minister of Health and Wellness, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic, gave this commitment today in a statement which addressed the issue. “The Cabinet of Barbados, after reviewing all the information related to changes in the Barbados Drug Formulary, has agreed that the grace period would come to an end as agreed on June 30. However, in the event that the Barbados Drug Service is unable to source quality generics from July 1, the Barbados Drug Service will continue to ensure an uninterrupted supply by providing the appropriate branded drugs under the Special Benefit Scheme,” he said. He added that Government will continue to reimburse the cost of these branded drugs to the private sector until a secure supply of generics could be established. Lt Col Bostic revealed that he had met yesterday with all the stakeholders, namely the Barbados Association of Pharmacy Owners, the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners and the Barbados Pharmaceutical Society, to update them and also to apologise for any misunderstandings that may have arisen in respect of this issue. The parties, he revealed, committed to another meeting on July 20 to review progress and decide on any specific changes that may need to be made. “It was further agreed that primary focus must be on providing quality patient care to all residents of Barbados. To ensure that we are able to achieve this, I have committed to open and regular dialogue with all the parties involved, “ he stated. He also promised a review of the process within the next few months to determine the effectiveness of the roll out. “Our objective is to ensure that no citizen is left behind. To this end, the Government of Barbados will continue to work with all stakeholders to address the challenges and to deliver the highest quality service to the people of Barbados,” the Health and Wellness Minister concluded. (BT)
MINISTER SHARES PLAN FOR OISTINS -  Barbadian fishermen stand to reap real rewards from the influx of the Sargassum seaweed plaguing the beaches. As the brown macroalgae continues to litter shores, Minister of Maritime Affairs Kirk Humphrey said there was money to be made in the collection of seaweed. “We have to find a way to use the Sargassum and the fish that it brings, but we also have to stop the Sargassum because fishermen said that some of the seaweed is getting into their boats and affecting their fishing. “But there are some people who are prepared to pay fishermen, to ‘fish’ the Sargassum out of the water. So if that is something the fishing industry is interested in we can develop a relationship where we can start using the fishermen to help us . . . and then we would use that to help us make methanol, methane gas, and fertiliser,” Humphrey said. He did not disclose who would be buying the seaweed, but said more details would follow. The Minister made these disclosures yesterday at the Berinda Cox Fish Market as the Oistins Fisherfolk Association celebrated Fisherman’s Day. Humphrey also promised to do what he could to expedite repairs to the crane at the market so the cost of hauling in boats could be reduced. He said it was vital to improve working conditions there and provide necessary funds so people could invest more in the sector and transform the town. “If Oistins looks the same in five years after we’ve been in office for five years, then we have failed the people in this area. We have to make sure that Oistins looks and reflects the importance that Oistins has in Barbados,” he said. The annual event was also attended by Stella Lady St John, widow of late Prime Minister Sir Harold St John, and Member of Parliament for Christ Church South, Ralph Thorne. They presented several fisherfolk with awards for their service to the industry. Debra Gibbons received an award for Best Market Worker, Wellington Rowe Best Fish Vendor and the Careful Crew Most Productive Vessel. (SS)
CALL TO JOIN CLEAN-UP BANDWAGON – Minister of the Environment Trevor Prescod has issued a “clarion call” to Barbadians and members of the private sector to get on board with the National Clean-Up And Beautification Programme. His call came yesterday as he addressed the start of the programme at The Whim Gully, St Peter. The programme, which saw soldiers from the Barbados Defence Force joining crews from the Sanitation Service Authority and the National Conservation Commission to clean a number of sites from River Bay, St Lucy, to Long Beach, Christ Church, and The Whim Gully, will include watercourse clean-ups, tree trimming, debushing and the removal of Sargassum seaweed from beaches. In addition, there will be bulky waste clean-ups, derelict vehicle removals, clean-ups of illegal dump sites, an anti-litter drive, a vacant lot clean-up and other forms of beautification. Prescod explained to his audience of Government officials and members of private sector organisations that yesterday’s around-the-island clean-up was the beginning of the overall programme. “The economy, the society and the environment must be seen as key parts of a whole if we are to succeed in our endeavours to address this mission critical. “This programme speaks to the links between solid and liquid waste management, particularly of our water courses, biodiversity management, stormwater management and flooding, near-shore water quality and coral reefs,” he said. Prescod added that an important part of the national clean-up campaign would be education to break Barbadians of their littering and illegal dumping habits. Meanwhile, St James North Member of Parliament Edmund Hinkson, whose constituency includes The Whim, and who is also Minister of Home Affairs, which has responsibility for emergency management, said The Whim and its gully were problem areas and were the reason behind last year’s flooding in Gills Terrace, Speightstown. In urging Barbadians to join in the clean-up, Hinkson advised them to be “more thoughtful and caring and not to be so selfish” because when they took their garbage and put it somewhere else, they were only “transferring the problem”. (SS)
DOUBT ABOUT SARGASSUM FERTILIZER – While one of the possible uses for the influx of Sargassum seaweed is in agriculture, at least one farming leader is raising strong objections. Deborah Hunte is the president of the non-profit organisation Farmers Association of Barbados, and she thinks it may be best to burn the seaweed rather than use it widely in agriculture. She said more research needed to be done on the properties of the seaweed before she would feel comfortable using it in the soil. “I am very timid when it comes to that. It is something that has broken away and is free-floating, dead in the water. Why aren’t the fish eating it? What if there are marine diseases inside it? If the sea itself is rejecting this seaweed, why should we introduce it to the land?” she said, adding it would be prudent to have soil tests done to see how the seaweed affected soil over a period of time. Hunte said farmers in St Lucy had recorded initial success using the Sargassum in their fields during a yearlong trial but things eventually turned sour – or salty, to be precise. “Any and everything can’t grow in that seaweed and eventually the salt adversely affected the soil and the produce started to become scorched. That was as far as the trial went – it had pretty good results at first, but it ended badly,” she said. Hunte said she planned to look into the matter further but asked that she already had serious concerns about introducing marine material to terrain environments.  “I remember there was a push to introduce fish offal into fertiliser, but remember there are people who are severely allergic to seafood and there are others who are vegans. I have a problem with crossing certain things – the sea and land should be kept separate – and I don’t want it to be a case where something from the sea gets into the produce and ends up actually causing someone to get sick,” she said, also raising concerns about salt getting into the water table. Until she has more information on the issue, Hunte suggested the relevant authorities should burn the seaweed and then see if the ash could be useful.  (SS)
WESLEY HALL JUNIOR SCHOOL PRINCIPAL RENEWS CALL FOR BUILDING TO BE REPAIRED – Principal of the Wesley Hall Junior School, Herbert Gittens is making another call for the promised reconstruction of the St Michael school that has been in a state of disrepair for a number of years. He made the appeal as he delivered his report at the school’s graduation at the Sanctuary Empowerment Centre on Friday. The principal said the school was part of a programme commonly referred to as ‘EduTech 2’ project that was being financed by the Caribbean Development Bank, which started in 2012. He explained that as part of the project, one secondary and eight primary schools would be repaired or rebuilt and his school had been earmarked for reconstruction. “They have promised Wesley Hall a new school and I want it . . . the conditions at Wesley Hall really are not the best and we really could do with the new construction,” Gittens said. He requested that Government move swiftly to address their woes. “Our plant continues to deteriorate and we are really in need of those faculties, so when you [Shamin Ally, District Educational Officer] go back and you are walking the corridors and you run into Ms [Santia] Bradshaw, let her know to pass on the message to the new Prime Minister that we want them to give priority to the project.” The principal also reported that the school was also suffering from behavioural challenges. “Too much teaching is lost when we have to deal with that type of student because we have some challenges all year with one or two students,” he said. “We also see more students entering with serious behaviour issues and challenges. It is extremely difficult for a teacher of 20-25 students of various learning abilities to adequately cater to five or six students who have to severe behavioural challenges.” Gittens made the call for more resources to be provide and additional assistance for those students. COLIN CARTER DONATES LIBRARY BEARING HIS NAME TO ST GILES PRIMARY SCHOOL – A new library was officially opened on Friday at the St Giles Primary School. The library was sponsored by former student of the St Giles Boys School, Colin Carter. Speaking at the launch, Carter who is a United Kingdom-based author who has published his autobiography entitled Walk With Me, said that children in societies today are being taught fiction but they do not know the history of the countries in which they live. “I do not have a problem with fiction, but I think that our children should be exposed to serious reading. They don’t know our story. I am sure that very few here, if any at all, could tell me what was the name of this island before the white man came,” he said “I am saying that we need these type of books here to pull our children out of the morass that black people did not make a contribution to human civilization and we need to tell them about the great things that we have done and give them a sense of pride in their blackness,” he said. Education Officer Janelle Little charged the pupils of the Ivy, St Michael learning institution to become authors as they all have a story to tell. “I want to make a call for those in front of me and even the children to become authors. Just like  Mr Carter has written about his life, each of us has a story to tell and each of us should be willing to write that story,” she said. “Often times we see so much work done by Trinidadian authors and Jamaican authors especially in the educational context but I really want to encourage our Barbadian teachers and our Barbadian students to write. Let the world hear your story.” Principal Sandra Anderson thanked Carter for ensuring that he maintained the promise he made to the school last year that he would outfit it with a library. “At his book launch, he made a promise that St Giles Primary School would get a library and Mr Carter I am so proud of you and you kept your word.”  (BT)
RILEY CALLING FOR GIRLS – Conde Riley wants to keep a good thing going. The Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) is all on board with the women’s game, having called for each primary school to have two girls on their Herman Griffith team to provide a nursery for the country’s senior side. Riley said this was all part of a development initiative during yesterday’s celebratory lunch for the women’s Super50 champs at Kensington Oval. “As we go forward this year we’re about to unveil a cricket development plan from 2018 to 2022 and in that plan we’re going to have a special development system for women’s cricket. We’re looking at women’s cricket with a view to having a holistic development for the game,” Riley revealed. “I know at present we have about six or seven players on the West Indies team and I also know we have some players on contract with Cricket West Indies, but I would like to see the performances of the ladies in our tournaments continue, so I believe a lot has to be done to get it going. “As such we’re looking at a programme with the Ministry of Education, where through the Herman Griffith tournament, each primary school has two ladies per school playing in those competitions until we can get probably a base of 400 or 500 young ladies playing cricket,” he added. Riley’s comments came as part of a congratulatory message to the senior women’s team, who won the regional Super50 title after falling just short as runners-up in the T20 tournament. It was the third such cup for the star-studded squad, who entered as heavy favourites with West Indies veterans Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews, Shakera Selman, Shamilia Connell and Knight twin sisters Kycia and Kyshona. “I want to give a special thank you to the BCA for investing in the girls. It was a well-fought tournament but unfortunately we did not win the T20 but I thought we had some really good performances,” said Kycia. “The senior players had some good performances in the 50-over tournament where we were successful and that was good to see. So I just want to thank the BCA for investing in us again and we look forward to that support in the future.” (SS)
BRIDAL SHOWCASE A HIT – This takes the cake! The Cave Shepherd Bridal Showcase was the perfect marriage of decorations, cakes and other treats that would make the big day oh, so sweet. The “one-stop shop” for the wedding was a hit yesterday with customers who visited the top floor of the retail store’s main branch on Broad Street. The display was a collaboration between Aurora’s Delights, Sage-B Events and DER Cakes Supplies Inc.  (SS)

Looking at Nicola’s instagram story, Bridgerton season 3 episode 1 is starting filming. Any predictions for the next season?
I hope we see more Kanthony! We did not get enough of them being happily in love, just longing stares and angst for an entire season just to get 3 minutes of them happy together. Along with more Kanthony, I would love to see more of Kate’s backstory, especially learning more about her mother and how her death effected Kate, like in the books. I’m just really hoping for the Kanthony library scene that was skipped in season 2. Also, can’t wait to potentially see them as parents, baby Edmund!
I realize that with Polin being the lead couple, we’d see more of the Featheringtons…
I would skip the whole storyline with Prudence and Portia in season 2, but I feel like they are going to be important in season 3. I wonder if we’ll ever meet Felicity Featherington.
Hello, nonny! I'm so sorry I answered this ask late! I did see Nicola's story and ngl I am so excited to know they're already working on S3.
Predictions? Hmm. I don't think I have any? But what I do want to see is angst! I'm a sucker for angst so I want to see that part in the book where ABC are talking and Colin says he'll never marry Penelope and Pen overhears it lol there's always something so comedic about hearing a guy say he'll never marry this girl then, into the future, we see him super devoted to her. I think that we will still get Colin wallowing for Marina. He fancied himself in love with her and I don't think it's a kind of love that Colin would easily forget. I do hope we get a bit of rake Colin who's flirted with all of the ladies in London. I do want to see Lady D and Pen's relationship because she was her first champion and their friendship was very wholesome in the books.
I'm with you on the Kathony side of things, nonny! I heard that they're having Siena return for the next season. I don't think I want to see jealous Kate because there is the matter of her self-esteem and thinking she's not worthy of Anthony. I do love a jealous Anthony, however. Maybe if we see Mr. Dorset coming back to ignite that jealous streak in Anthony? :3 And YES! Baby Edmund should make a cameo for at least an episode! We saw baby Auggie so I hope he gets a cousin in little baby Edmund.
Actor-wise, I love Polly Walker (Portia Featherington) and Bessie Carter (Prudence F.)! They were the comedic reliefs in the show and they really got the harebrained sister and scheming mother to a T. As for the show, I don't know if I am excited in seeing more of them. There was too much Featherington screentime on s2 that it took a while what could've been time for Kate and Anthony. It felt unnecessary to me but looking back, it makes sense that they're given time because s3 is about Polin.
I love Felicity in the books! I hope she makes a cameo in the show and if she does, I hope she's not a snobbish Featherington cousin or whatever. Pen's gone through enough shit in the show. She needs an ally, especially now that she's not friends with Eloise anymore.
How about you, nonny? Any predictions for the lead couple?

watermelon + bubblegum 💕💖💝
ah thank you! 💜
watermelon — what books do you need to read?
too much for my own good, honestly. but it’s worth it! i’ve been trying to get back into reading more and it’s been a success but there’s a huge pile. this is going to be a lot...
right now i’m reading it by stephen king (✅) and after that’s done i’m planning to finish eliza and her monsters by francesca zappla (✅)! i started reading it at the library back home but didn’t finish it, so i bought it on my birthday and am planning to complete it because it really is good, i just get very distracted easily.
other books on the list are:
- anne of green gables by lucy maud montgomery (i love love anne with an e so when i found out it was adapted from a book, now i’m really curious to read it)
- six of crows by leigh bardugo (it’s a very popular book in the reading community and i just started it but i’m not as engaged with it as i thought i would be? i still want to finish it because i’ve only read about 5 pages so far) ✅
- the gallagher girls series by ally carter (what i thought was the first book was actually the second so i have to read #1, #3, #4, #5, #6. this is a childhood gem of mine so it’ll be one of the greatest days of my life when i’ve finally read the whole series. i first read the second book when i was...under 10 years old .i  don’t know the exact age, that’s how long it’s been. )
- radio silence by alice oseman (i saw this book circulating around tumblr so i was curious and then my favorite and only booktuber that i watch raved about it so now i definitely want to read it)
- the waves by virginia woolf (we talk a lot about her in my women & writing class and this book stands out the most to me because of the different perspectives so i’m excited about this one)
- red, white, and royal blue by casey mcquiston (also highly recommended by my favorite and only booktuber that i watch) ✅
and more!! way way more. a lot more. i could go all day with this but i think there has to be a limit.
bubblegum -- tell us about your fave oc’s.
meaning...characters that i’ve created? because i do actually have some, they’re just safely tucked away in a google docs sheet. i won’t go into all of them...unless? no, no i’m not. one of my favorite oc’s is from the first story i’ve ever actually started to write, and his name is colin! he’s always there for my main oc and is practically the older brother that she deserves, but by blood is her cousin. he makes some stupid choices but! he’s only 17 so let him live. plus! he feels very deeply—gets it from me, unfortunately—which means he’ll act out when he gets hurt. i love him with all my heart and as much of the fact that he does something stupid around the middle of the story where i’m planning, he truly loves our mc and proves it at the end :’) i’m a sucker for stories centered around family so i tried my own and colin and the mc’s relationship really mean the world to me.
if this question isn’t what i think it is, then welp...
sorry for taking so long! i put way too much consideration when it comes to stuff like this. but it was fun! stressful...but overall fun!
thank you for sending me these asks ❣️

Transiting Sun enters Gemini
May 20 - June 20, 2017
This is the perfect time of year, in the US, for the Sun to go through Gemini. The academic year is finishing up, which means final exams - which means a chance to show off (Sun) how much we’ve learned (Gemini).
Geminis love information. For us, that is power. The problems begin to arise when we’re too impressed with our cleverness and with the breadth of our knowledge; we aren’t truly glorious until we find some Missions into which we can share that information. As Steven Forrest put it in The Inner Sky, “The horse needs a rider.”
We also spend at least the first portion of our lives under the impression that we know it all. This is a problem in particular for the people in the USA. So many of us think that as soon as we get that high school diploma (age 18), we know everything we’ll ever need to know and no longer have to learn anything. (Ms M hopes she doesn’t have to refer people to Dolt 45 for the exemplar of this.) For some of us, though, the day will come when we suddenly realize how very much we don’t know - are clueless about - and we (figuratively) shatter into a billion pieces, we cling all the tighter to what paltry information we do have, or we embrace the opportunity to swap our information for some really mind-blowing concepts.
We’re a light-hearted bunch - always so confused to see the word “fickle” on the list of negative character traits - eager to learn, brains a-quiver like a pack of excited sseven-year-olds. This is our time of year! Amazing things are about to happen, can’t you sense it? We’re on high alert, waiting for it to happen.
Which house(s) does the Sun pass through when it’s in Gemini? Time to open up the windows and blow away the stale, dusty air. There are challenges ahead which demand not only our attention, but our clever solutions.
Celebrities with Sun in Gemini:
Ms M (technically not a celeb though), Angelina Jolie, Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Depp, Kanye West, JFK, Prince, Paul McCartney, Tupac, Rafael Nadal, Colin Farrell, Bob Dylan, Naomi Campbell, Chris Evans, Liam Neeson, Hugh Laurie, Alanis Morissette, Morgan Freeman, Helena Bonham Carter, Queen Victoria, Judy Garland, Anne Frank, Ice Cube, Chris Pratt, Left Eye, Lauryn Hill, Prince Phillip, Helen Hunt, Albrecht Durer
Tuesday, May 30, Vesta/Leo sextile Sun/Gemini, 9:43
Speaking of our inner seven-year-olds, today gives us a great opportunity to remember and honor her/him. We have the chance for some positive personal integration (or a tune-up) based on letting that child out to play. Gemini’s attention span is stronger and more focused today, too.
Planets/Points affected lie between 8:43 and 10:43 of the yang signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.
Saturday, June 3, Jupiter Rx/Libra trine Sun/Gemini, 13:16
Excellent for broadening our experiences. Hie thee to a museum - the art museum would do, of course, but I’m thinking more along the lines of a science and nature museum. We need to do whatever it takes to think of ourselves as tolerant, intellectually curious, humane individuals.
Planets/Points affected lie between 12:16 and 14:16 of the yang the yang signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.
Sunday, June 4, Neptune/Pisces square Sun/Gemini, 14:13
This also can manifest as a hankering for breadth of understanding, but takes a spiritual flavor. Our imaginations move in multiple directions simultaneously, except none of these directions go anywhere near “reality” or “practicality.” Keep at least your pinky toe on the ground today.
Planets/Points affected lie between 13:13 and 15:13 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*; between 28:13 and 29:59 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 00:00 and 00:13 of the fixed signs Taurus*, Leo*, Scorpio*, and Aquarius*.
Monday, June 5, Ceres/Gemini conjunct Sun/Gemini, 15:30
When these two combine, our identities become more parental. For Gemini, the emphasis is on learning, talking, and fidgeting. Take your inner child (or your actual child!) to the library today. Also, we may feel a little scattered about taking good care of ourselves. In Gemini, that’s either forgetting to eat, or eating the convenient things that don’t impose on your attention span.
Planets/Points affected lie between 14:30 and 16:30 of the yang signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.
Wednesday, June 14, Eris/Aries sextile Sun/Gemini, 23:45
This can manifest as almost a cocky feeling about identifying with “The Other.” We’re much more openly curious about unfamiliar people and concepts - remember to be respectful and polite, if you decide to investigate.
Planets/Points affected lie between 22:45 and 24:45 of the yang signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.
Thursday, June 15, Saturn Rx/Sagittarius opposite Sun/Gemini, 24:30
This is the first of two Sun-Gemini challenges. Knowledge versus understanding; breadth versus depth; liberty versus responsibility. Why does it have to be either/or? Where did we get the notion that one is superior to the other? We may also be tempted today to lip off at any “authority figure” we perceive as pompous and out-of-touch. Behave.
Planets/Points affected lie between 23:30 and 25:30 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*; and between 8:30 and 10:30 of the fixed signs Taurus*, Leo*, Scorpio*, and Aquarius*.
Sunday, June 18, North Node/Leo sextile Sun/Gemini, South Node/Aquarius trine Sun/Gemini, 27:19; Pallas/Aries sextile Sun/Gemini, 27:20; Uranus/Aries sextile Sun/Gemini, 27:42
Father’s Day in the US finds us in extremely intriguing situations with tremendous growth potential. It’s creative, brilliant energy which can go into artistic expression, innovations in science and technology, social reform - maybe all three at once! The Sky’s the limit.
Planets/Points affected lie between 26:19 and 28:42 of the yang signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.
Monday, June 19, Venus/Taurus semi-square Sun/Gemini, 13:42/28:42; Chiron/Pisces square Sun/Gemini, 28:48
The Sun’s annual passage through Gemini ends in a minor key. We’re hurting, probably both emotionally and intellectually - be careful how you talk to yourself. Instead of lashing out, we brood, or we overindulge in our favorite escape. As long as we’re doing our best and making honest efforts, we can be proud of ourselves.
Planets/Points affected lie between 27:42 and 29:48 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*; and between 12:42 and 14:48 of the fixed signs Taurus*, Leo*, Scorpio*, and Aquarius*.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Beauty of Brutalist Architecture: An Introduction in Six Videos
Some people hate the massive concrete buildings known as Brutalist, but they at least approve of the style's name, resonant as it seemingly is with associations of insensitive, anti-humanist bullying. Those who love Brutalism also approve of the style's name, but for a different reason: they know it comes from the French béton brut, referring to raw concrete, that material most generously used in Brutalist buildings' construction. We've all seen Brutalist architecture, massively embodied by Boston City Hall, London's Barbican Centre, UC Berkeley's Wurster Hall, the University of Toronto's Robarts Library, FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., or any other of the examples that have stood since the style's 1960s and 70s heyday. But now, as more get slated for demolition each year, it has fallen to Brutalism's enthusiasts to defend an architecture easily seen as indefensible.
The aesthetic of Brutalism, says host Roman Mars in an episode of the podcast 99% Invisible on the style, "can conjure up associations with bomb shelters, Soviet-era or 'third-world' construction, but as harsh as it looks, concrete is an utterly optimistic building material." In the 1920s "concrete was seen as being the material that would change the world. The material seemed boundless — readily available in vast quantities, and concrete sprang up everywhere — on bridges, tunnels, highways, sidewalks, and of course, massive buildings."
It "presented the most efficient way to house huge numbers of people, and government programs all over the world loved it — particularly Soviet Russia, but also later in Europe and North America." Philosophically, "concrete was seen as humble, capable, and honest—exposed in all its rough glory, not hiding behind any paint or layers."
However noble the intentions behind these works of architecture, though, it didn't take humanity long to turn on Brutalism. Part of the problem had to do with the disrepair into which many of the highest-profile Brutalist buildings — social housing complexes, transit centers, government offices — were allowed to fall immediately after the ideologies that drove their construction passed out of favor. But Brutalism also fell victim to a predictable cycle of fashion: as architecture critics often point out, the public of any era consistently admires hundred-year-old buildings, but condemns (often literally) fifty-year-old buildings. New Yorkers still lament the loss of their grand old Penn Station, but its ornate Beaux-Arts style no doubt looked as heavy-handed and out-of-touch to as many people in the early 1960s, the time of its demolition, as Brutalism does today.
What, then, is the case for Brutalist architecture? "It's a sense of place. It's a sense of the drama of the space that they surround," says This Brutal World author Peter Chadwick the BBC clip at the top of the post. "It is sculpture. It's gone beyond being just functional. It's just beautiful sculpture that mirrors its environment." In the DW Euromaxx video below, Deutsches Architekturmuseum curator Oliver Elser sees in Brutalism a valuable lesson for building today: "Make more from less. I think this way of thinking, spatial generosity with simpler materials, is a timely stance for architecture." Architectural historian Elain Harwood calls Brutalism "a particular architecture for ambitious times gripped by a fervor for change. Whatever style you call it, the results are unique and have a heroic beauty than sets them apart from the architecture of any other era." (In fact, some Brutalism enthusiasts who dislike the label have put up the term "Heroic" instead.)
Whatever the articulacy of Brutalism's defenders, the most effective arguments for its preservation have been made with not words but images. Chadwick first made his mark with his This Brutal House accounts on Twitter and Instagram, and a search on the latter for the hashtag #brutalism reveals the astonishing range and intensity of the style's 21st-century fandom. A fair few videos have also taken individual works of Brutalism as their subjects, from a reflexively loathed survivor like Boston City Hall to the unlikely upper-middle-class oasis of the Barbican Centre to a high-minded projects now under the wrecking ball like Robin Hood Gardens. Despite how many people seem happy to see Brutalist buildings go, some, like Australian architect Shaun Carter in his TEDx Sydney Salon talk below, remind us of the value of keeping our history concretized, as it were, in the built environment around us.
Bunkers, Brutalism and Bloodymindedness: Concrete Poetry writer Jonathan Meades puts it more forcefully: "The destruction of Brutalist buildings is more than the destruction of a particular mode of architecture. It is like burning books. It's a form of censorship of the past, a discomfiting past, by the present. It's the revenge of a mediocre age on an age of epic grandeur." To his mind, it's the destruction of evidence of "a determined optimism that made us more potent than we have become," of the fact that "we don't measure up against those who took risks, who flew and plunged to find new ways of doing things, who were not scared to experiment, who lived lives of perpetual inquiry." If Brutalism has to go, it has to go because it reminds us that "once upon a time, we were not scared to address the Earth in the knowledge that the Earth would not respond, could not respond."

Bush saluted by CIA comrades; service dog Sully comes, too
WASHINGTON -- The CIA honored its old boss, the only spy chief to become president, with visits to George H.W. Bush's flag-covered casket on Tuesday, joining members of the public who had lined up before dawn to pay respects to the 41st president in the U.S. Capitol rotunda.
Besides the thousands of people streaming by, Sully, the late president's service dog, was brought by, too.
In the midst of the mourning, the Trumps invited the Bush family to share some holiday cheer with a tour of the Christmas decorations at the White House. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited Bush's casket in the hushed Capitol on Monday evening, standing with their eyes closed before the president gave a salute.
Trump and his wife were to visit the Bush family at the Blair House presidential guesthouse Tuesday.
Although the president will attend Bush's national funeral service Wednesday, he is not among the eulogists announced by the Bush family, a list that includes the late president's son, former President George W. Bush.
"The elegance & precision of the last two days have been remarkable!" Trump tweeted of the funeral ceremonies, which opened in Texas and came to Washington on Monday, with Bush lying in state at the Capitol until the Washington National Cathedral service.
Dignitaries came forward starting Monday to honor the Texan whose service to his country extended three quarters of a century from World War II through his final years as an advocate for volunteerism and relief for people displaced by natural disaster. President from 1989 to 1993, Bush died Friday at age 94.
On Tuesday, CIA Director Gina Haspel and former directors John Brennan and George Tenet visited Bush's casket, as did Colin Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when Bush assembled the coalition that rescued Kuwait from Iraq's invasion in the Gulf War.
Trump's relationship with the Bush family has been tense. The current president has mocked the elder Bush for his "thousand points of light" call to volunteerism, challenged his son's legacy as president and trounced "low-energy" Jeb Bush in the Republican presidential primaries en route to office. The late President Bush called Trump a "blowhard."
Those insults have been set aside, but the list of funeral service speakers marked the first time since Lyndon Johnson's death in 1973 that a sitting president was not tapped to eulogize a late president. (Bill Clinton did so for Richard Nixon, and George W. Bush eulogized Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.)
Joining George W. Bush as eulogists Wednesday: Alan Simpson, the former senator and acerbic wit from Wyoming, Brian Mulroney, the former Canadian prime minister who also gave a eulogy for Reagan; and presidential historian Jon Meacham.
In an invocation opening Monday evening's ceremony, the U.S. House chaplain, the Rev. Patrick J Conroy, praised Bush's commitment to public service, from Navy pilot to congressman, U.N. ambassador, envoy to China and then CIA director before being elected vice president and then president.
"Here lies a great man," said Rep. Paul Ryan, the House speaker, and "a gentle soul. ... His legacy is grace perfected."
Vice President Mike Pence and Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell also spoke.
Political combatants set aside their fights to honor a Republican who led in a less toxic era and at times found commonality with Democrats despite sharp policy disagreements. Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi, a past House speaker nominated for the post in the new Congress, exchanged a warm hug with George W. Bush and came away dabbing her face. Bush himself seemed to be holding back tears.
Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, placed wreaths in the short ceremony before the rotunda was opened to the public.
Sent off from Texas with a 21-gun salute, Bush's casket was carried to Joint Base Andrews outside the capital city aboard an aircraft that often serves as Air Force One and designated "Special Air Mission 41" in honor of Bush's place on the chronological list of presidents.
Cannon fire roared again outside the Capitol as the sun sank and the younger President Bush stood with his hand over his heart, watching the casket's procession up the steps.
Bush was remembered just feet away from what he called "Democracy's front porch," the west-facing steps of the Capitol where he was sworn in as president.
Although Bush's funeral services are suffused with the flourishes accorded presidents, by his choice they will not include a formal funeral procession through downtown Washington.
On Sunday, students, staff and visitors had flocked to Bush's presidential library on the campus of Texas A&M University, with thousands of mourners paying their respects at a weekend candlelight vigil at a nearby pond and others contributing to growing flower memorials at Bush statues at both the library and a park in downtown Houston.
"I think he was one of the kindest, most generous men," said Marge Frazier, who visited the downtown statue Sunday while showing friends from California around.
After services in Washington, Bush will be returned to Houston to lie in repose at St. Martin's Episcopal Church before burial Thursday at his family plot on the library grounds. His final resting place will be alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years who died in April, and Robin Bush, the daughter they lost to leukemia in 1953 at age 3.
Trump has ordered the federal government closed Wednesday for a national day of mourning. Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days.
Bush's passing puts him in the Washington spotlight after more than two decades living the relatively low-key life of a former president. His death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents' club to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

President George HW Bush returns to capital to lie in state
HOUSTON — George H.W. Bush came back to Washington for a final time Monday, heading for the Capitol to lie in state as the nation paid tribute to the 41st president for a lifetime of service that began in the Navy during World War II, ended with four years as president and was characterized throughout by what admirers say was decency, generosity and kindness.
Sent off from his beloved Texas with a 21-gun salute, Bush’s casket was carried to Andrews Air Force Base outside the capital city aboard an aircraft that often serves as Air Force One.
Former President George W. Bush, the eldest of the four Bush sons, and his wife, Laura, along with brother Neil Bush and his family, boarded the plane for the cross-country trip to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington.
On Sunday, students, staff and visitors had flocked to Bush’s presidential library on the campus of Texas A&M University, with thousands of mourners paying their respects at a weekend candlelight vigil at a nearby pond and others contributing to growing flower memorials at Bush statues at both the library and a park in downtown Houston.
“I think he was one of the kindest, most generous men,” said Marge Frazier, who visited the downtown statue on Sunday while showing friends from California around.
A similar outpouring is anticipated in Washington this week during the state funeral for Bush, who died late Friday at his home in Houston. He was 94.
Bush, who was president from 1989 to 1993, will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda for a ceremony and public visitation from Monday through Wednesday. An invitation-only funeral service is set for Wednesday at Washington National Cathedral. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are to attend. Bush’s family has not said who will speak at the service. Former President Jimmy Carter also will be there.
Afterward, Bush will be returned to Houston to lie in repose at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church before burial Thursday at his family plot on the library grounds. His final resting place will be alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years who died in April, and Robin Bush, the daughter they lost to leukemia in 1953 at age 3.
Bush’s casket was to arrive in Washington on Monday afternoon aboard the U.S. military airplane. The crew was tasked by Trump with carrying out “Special Air Mission 41,” a reference to Bush’s place in the roster of America’s presidents.
Retired Gen. Colin Powell, who as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was Bush’s top military adviser, said Bush was the “perfect American” for serving his country in so many different capacities and should be remembered for “a life of quality, a life of honor, a life of honesty, a life of total concern for the American people.”
“He was a patriot. He demonstrated that in war, he demonstrated that in peace. He was able to demonstrate that in his four years of service,” Powell said on ABC’s “This Week.”
Trump has ordered the federal government closed Wednesday for a national day of mourning. Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days out of respect for Bush.
Trump, who has not always uttered kind words about the Bush family, offered nothing but praise in the hours after the former president’s death was announced.
“He was just a high-quality man who truly loved his family,” Trump said Saturday while in Argentina. “One thing that came through loud and clear, he was very proud of his family and very much loved his family. So he was a terrific guy and he’ll be missed.”
Bush’s passing puts him back in the Washington spotlight after more than two decades living the relatively low-key life of a former president. His death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents’ club to four: Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
One of Bush’s major achievements was assembling the international military coalition that liberated the tiny, oil-rich nation of Kuwait from invading neighbor Iraq in 1991. The war lasted just 100 hours. He also presided over the end of the Cold War between the United States and the former Soviet Union.
A humble hero of World War II, Bush was just 20 when he survived being shot down during a bombing run over a Japanese island. He had joined the Navy when he turned 18.
Shortly before leaving the service, he married his 19-year-old sweetheart, Barbara Pierce, and forged the longest presidential marriage in U.S. history. Bush enrolled at Yale University after military service, becoming a scholar-athlete and captaining the baseball team to two College World Series before graduating Phi Beta Kappa after just 2½ years.
After moving to Texas to work in the oil business, Bush turned his attention to politics in the 1960s. He was elected to the first of two terms in Congress in 1967. He would go on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations and China, head of the CIA and chairman of the Republican National Committee before being elected to two terms as Ronald Reagan’s vice president.
Soon after he reached the height of his political popularity following the liberation of Kuwait, with public approval ratings that are the envy of today’s politicians, the U.S. economy began to sour and voters began to believe that Bush, never a great communicator – something even he acknowledged – was out of touch with ordinary people.
He was denied a second term by Arkansas Gov. Clinton, who would later become a close friend. The pair worked together to raise tens of millions of dollars for victims of a 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and of Hurricane Katrina, which swamped New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005.
“Who would have thought that I would be working with Bill Clinton of all people?” he joked in 2005.
In a recent essay, Clinton declared of Bush: “I just loved him.”
