Seeing Blind Ch. 5
Colin Shea x pregnant!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: After a one-night stand, you find yourself pregnant. While navigating your pregnancy, the father of your baby seems to have another task at hand.
Warnings: angst, swearing, jealousy, eventual smut, slowish burn, in-depth descriptions/discussions of pregnancy, descriptions of mafia dynamics, Colin is a little shit
A/N: It’s been a minute since I've written; been going through a lot of mental health issues. I'm still working through them. I hope the next few installments of fics I post can make up for the delays. Thanks @eightcevanscentral.

The park is crowded, teeming with people having picnics, walking their dogs, and letting their children run loose along the grass and walkways.
Everyone here seems to be more intimately involved. They hold hands or have their arms slung around their partners in one way or another. If they’re not attached physically, they walk in close proximity to each other.
It makes Colin and Aly stick out. They look like an awkward pair, staying about half an arm’s length from one another as they search for the picnic area where Aly’s next ex is meant to be entertaining a seven-year-old’s party.
“There it is,” Colin points out.
It’s the classic picnic-in-the-park birthday party with bright foil balloons, food everywhere, and kids running amuck with water guns and silly string. Parents are day drinking out in the open, not paying attention to whatever havoc their little monsters were creating.
Colin gulps when he realizes this is in his future. Over-the-top birthday parties for kids who probably won’t remember a single second of it, stupid presents, and mingling with actual adults who know what they’re doing.
He’s way out of his depth. He should’ve known he was punching out of his weight taking you back to his apartment; you were the only woman smart enough to leave before he woke up. His usual targets are the girls who have only a fraction more desperation than he has. It’s why they stay in the morning hoping for something more and what’s led him to running around Boston tracking down his neighbor’s exes.
“Well, there he is,” Aly’s voice comes, jarring him from his thoughts.
He spots a little wooden theater where two homemade farm animal puppets appear to be arguing. The kids burst into laughter while Colin and Aly exchange a look.
As the show comes to a close, it doesn’t get any stranger, but it gives Aly an opportunity to say hello while the kids get cake and watch the birthday celebrant open presents.
To avoid looking like a strange man lingering around a child’s birthday party, Colin makes his way to a tree and sits among the roots. He contemplates his impending fatherhood while people watching from his vantage point.
It’s not just stupidly expensive birthday parties coming. He watches a dad catch his kid mid-fall–it’s that too. He sees another lugging a diaper bag in one hand while his baby flails in his grip, but his hold never falters.
Colin looks at his hands. Can I do that?
At the birthday party, a man mediates a situation between two boys. One boy says something, he looks at the other one. On and on, until the man speaks once more and the boys hug before playing together again.
Will anyone teach him how to do this?
He thinks about his own father; Chief of Police in Salem, a well-respected man who produced two sons who have made a name for themselves in their own rights.
And a third who had no part of his life together, trying to usher a baby into the world with a woman he had a one night stand with.
“Well, that was a disaster,” Aly’s voice jars him from his thoughts, the ideas rattling in his brain before dissipating like smoke.
“Huh?”
“Didn’t get much out of that encounter other than the fact that I remember why we broke up.”
“And…?”
“His puppets creeped me out. Anyway,” Aly pauses as she opens her purse and digs through it. “Here is…twenty, forty, sixty, seventy.”
She hands him the cash and it crumples in his hands.
“You wanna grab a taxi back to the building? I need some wine.”
Colin shakes his head. “No, I’m just gonna head a few blocks that way before I head back.”
“What’s over at ‘a few blocks that way’?”
“Just gotta pick up some stuff,” he says as he shoves the bills in his pocket. “I’ll see ya around.”
She nods and walks on her way to the western entrance of the park.
Putting his hands in his pockets, Colin stands up and begins to walk down the path when a male voice catches his attention.
“Hey, Free Licks.”
Looking up, he finds Mateo, donned in all black with shades perched on his nose. Colin can’t help but note the difference between the two of them again; he was wearing stained jeans and a faded t-shirt.
Colin greets him with a nod. “Detective.”
“What brings you to the park today?”
“Oh, you know, the sunshine, the fresh air.” Colin inhales through his nose obnoxiously.
Mateo raises an eyebrow. “I see. Well, I was here on business from Y/N, but…when I see suspicious activity, I have to follow up on it, you know?”
Colin shakes his head, a little incredulous. “What? She’s got you spying on me?”
“Not you, but a point person. BPD business. There was a drop that was meant to happen. You know anything about that?”
Pursing his lips and raising his brows, Colin gestures “no” again. “Nothing that I’ve seen.”
Mateo reaches into his pocket and hands him his card. “Well, if you see anything, you’ll let me know, right?”
Taking it between his thumb and forefinger, the card nearly falls in his weak grip. Colin doesn’t know what to do with it or why Mateo is giving it to him. “Sure…?”
“Good. See you around, Free Licks.”
- - - - -
“I wasn’t expecting you to actually show up,” you scoff with a smile. “But, while you’re here, you can push the cart.”
You let go and the cart still moves, wheels squeaking as it glides down the aisle and Colin scrambles to get a grip on the handle. When he eventually gets it, he cranes his neck to find you studying the different boxes lining the shelves.
“What are we looking at?”
“Changing tables.”
“Like the ones in ladies’ bathrooms?”
“Not quite, but same idea. Just a space where you can store everything for changing a diaper and keep the baby safe while you’re grabbing stuff.”
“You make it sound like it’s a whole process,” Colin snorts.
You look at him. “You’ve never changed a diaper before in your life, have you?”
He scoffs, lying through his teeth. “Psh, what are you talking about? Of course, I have.”
“It’s okay if you haven’t, you know that right?”
How are you able to see right through him?
It seems his face shows his bewilderment, and you respond to it, “Colin, like I said, I didn’t expect you to do any of this. I still don’t expect a lot from you–not that I don’t welcome this, but because I can do this on my own if I need to.”
He doesn’t reply. Looking at his face, his cheeks look particularly round like a child’s, casting a sort of innocence on him that doesn’t reflect the person you know him as. He’s goofy and charming, things that attracted you to him in the first place that fateful night when all of this started. Along with that, he’s experienced, but you can see there’s a thought rattling in his mind that his mouth won’t say.
“Look, whatever your decisions are for doing this—if you’re trying to prove yourself to someone or if you’re putting expectations on yourself–you can’t let that bother you. I don’t know the extent of what I’m getting myself into. This kid could be like me, or they could be like you. But however they turn out, I’m gonna do my best to make sure they live happily. And that’s all you can do: your best.”
He nods, but you don’t think it’s really getting to him.
“Maybe I can sign us up for a parent coaching class. I’m sure we’d hardly be the first unusual pair of parents a teacher has seen.”
His cheeks turn red first, then his ears. He smiles and nods again. “Yeah…yeah, I think that’s a great idea.”
“It’s a deal.”
You grab his hand and hook your pinky with his.
“Now, while we’re here, can you do me a favor and put that box in the cart?” you ask, pointing to the one you want.
“Yes, ma’am.”
As he does what you request, you bite your lip and blink slowly.
You can feel your non-expectations–the ones you still hold on Colin where he’s welcome to do as he pleases–slowly metamorphosize. There’s a flash of him bathed in the morning sunlight, smiling up at a giggling baby he’s lifting over his head.
“Anything else from this aisle?”
The image is gone in a puff of smoke, trailing in the air before disappearing completely.
You shake your head. “No, but I need to go to the next aisle and look at rocking chairs.”
- - -
Hauling everything to the cashier for check out, your items are ringed up and bagged while you reach for your wallet.
“Oh, here…I have this.”
Colin shoves his hand in his pocket, pulling out some crumpled up bills and awkwardly setting them on the counter. Just by looking at it and the grand total of the items on the counter, you know it’s not enough.
“Colin…it’s okay,” you say, pulling out your card and handing it to the cashier.
As he gathers up the money, you ask where he got it.
“I did a favor for a friend.”
“And they paid you that much money for a favor?”
Grabbing the last bill, he puts it back into his pocket. “Well, she owes me.”
You don’t have time to wonder too much about why he’s being so vague, not with the cashier asking for your signature for the payment and asking if you want to join the store’s rewards program.
With all the items bagged, you and Colin hail a taxi to go back to your apartment. Every once in a while, you consider pressing further, your suspicion a by-product of the analytical mind that got you the position you work in.
Deciding against it, you send Colin on his way and prepare for work tomorrow.
- - - - -
You yawn as you exit your apartment, pivoting back to lock the door behind you.
A flash of blue stuck on your door as it closes behind you catches your eye. When you look at it, you realize it’s a note, probably from one of your neighbors.
The words become clearer as you reach for the note, peeling it off the surface and reading it.
If you know what’s good for you, you’ll stop.
You huff. Rolling your eyes, you stuff it into your canvas bag–your newly-designated lunch bag ever since your appetite grew so that you could “eat for two.”
And prevent yourself from rage-quitting your job out of hunger-fueled anger.
Figuring it’s just the young kid on the second floor playing a prank, you head out to work.
- - -
“Bebitaaaa,” Mateo sings as he enters your cave of computer monitors.
He places a hand on your shoulder to straighten your spine.
“You need to work on your posture,” he remarks.
You scoff. “And you need to pack your own snacks and stop taking from a pregnant lady,” you speak, but are certain he couldn’t hear you over the sound of wrappers crinkling.
“Speaking of you being pregnant, I ran into Colin at the park yesterday..." he trails off. "What’s this?”
“Hmm?”
Your chair swivels as you look at him, finding the note from your door in his hand. “Bebita…where’d you find this?”
“Oh,” you exhale dismissively, “that’s nothing. I found it on my door this morning.”
“And you didn’t think to tell me?”
“Tell you about what? It’s a note. Probably from the little boy upstairs.”
Mateo’s eyes narrow. “How old is that kid?”
“I dunno,” you shrug. “Fourteen?”
“I don’t think fourteen-year-olds play tricks like this.”
“Just because you didn’t because you were a damn genius who went to college at sixteen doesn’t mean other fourteen-year-olds don’t.”
“Bebita, I don’t think you understand this. ‘If you know what’s good for you’? That’s a threat.”
“Mateo, come on, after that it says ‘you’ll stop.’ Stop what? If this is a threat, it’s a pretty empty one.”
“We’re in a dangerous line of work, did you even consider that maybe this is a guy from the mob? Or maybe one of them put the kid up to writing the note to try and hide their scent?”
You roll your eyes, “Knock it off, Mateo. There’s no way they know who I am, much less where I live–”
“You don’t know that, you don’t know what they’re capable of–”
“I know what I’m capable of, and I’m pretty sure my work is completely untraceable.”
He’s quiet for a moment, then grabs your phone from the desk. Unlocking it, he swipes through and taps before showing you the screen. It’s Colin’s contact information. His thumb hovers over the call button.
“Don’t make me do this.”
“Oh my god,” you roll your eyes again, your head lolling back in annoyance as your arms cross. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
He taps the button and he brings the phone to his ear as the call begins.
You hear Colin on the other line. “Hello?”
“Hey, Free Licks.”
“Oh, it’s you.”
You snort and Mateo’s eyes drift up in exasperation. “Yeah, it’s me. I’m calling though because Y/N found a threatening note on her door but doesn’t think it’s a big deal.”
“Wait, what?!”
“Yeah, it said, ‘if you know what’s good for you, you’ll stop.’ I think the mob knows where she lives.”
“You really think they would?” Colin’s concern comes clearly through the speaker.
“I think anything’s possible,” Mateo says pointedly, throwing you a look. “But like I said, she’s pretty confident in her ability to be untraceable.”
“But if the note was on her door…”
Mateo nods slowly, smugly. “You get it.”
“Is she there?”
“Right in front of me.”
“Can I talk to her?”
You take the phone, sticking your tongue out before you speak, “Hey Colin.”
“Why didn’t you tell me about the note when we were texting earlier?”
“Same thing I told Mateo,” you sigh, getting really irritated that you keep having to repeat yourself. “It’s not a big deal, it’s probably nothing.”
“But it was on your door.”
“I’m sure a lot of people find notes on their doors.”
“Not threatening ones!” Colin says into the receiver as Mateo nearly shouts the same thing in front of you.
“God, how do I turn off the surround sound in here?”
“Bebita, you might take this lightly, but I’m not.”
“Yeah…yeah, and neither am I!” Colin tacks on.
“A woman’s life is most endangered when she’s pregnant because that’s the time she’s most likely to get killed.”
You’re shocked Mateo would bring that up to you now, placing a hand on your lower stomach.
“I’m not taking any chances with you, especially with Riona Maher’s arrest at Logan happening earlier this week.”
You swallow, pushing your pride down as you look away from Mateo. You feel like a teenager getting lectured by her father.
“Promise me if you see anything else like this, you’ll tell me right away.”
You don’t reply immediately.
“Promise him,” Colin pleads from the phone.
“Fine, I promise. But only because I’m still pretty sure this is nothing.”
“I’ll take it,” Mateo sighs. “And Colin’s a witness.”
“Thanks for including me.”
Mateo says, “You’re welcome,” as you say goodbye and end the call.
“I’m gonna take this down to forensics and see if they can pull up anything.”
“You’d be wasting time,” you taunt as you turn back to your computer.
“And I’m driving you home tonight and picking you up in the morning.”
“Mateo–”
“Nothing you can do about it, my mind’s made up.”
He shuts the door behind him, leaving you typing away as you shake your head.
I’m the pregnant one, your mind gripes, I should be the one who overreacts to things, not them.

Hey can I ask for a Colin Shea x underage femboy male reader where the reader just moved in with his family next to Colin. He finds the boy very breathtaking precisely with his feminine-pale body and face.He always finds himself touching him watching the boy getting out of shower showing his plump big butt. So he often tries to tease the boy by showing of his musculer body, rubbing his bulge on the younger males ass and by saying dirty double meaning things to him even in public. The boy genuinely finds Colin attractive but tries to avoid him because of his shy nature. So, one day when Colin sees the family of his boy going out in a vacation or whatever without the reader he makes a plan to get his way with the boy. He goes into the boy's apartment with an excuse and....(smut happens)
You can include Daddy kink, body worshipping, blowjob(colin recieving), spanking, size kink, breeding/pregnant kink.
*the smut is slowly consensual cause the boy doesn't submit himself to colin but slowlt gives up.
Btw, your fics are so so so good! Your Ransom Drysdale x Male reader one is my fav!!
(POLICE SIRENS)
WHAT YOU MEAN BY UNDERAGE?!?!
(FBI OPEN UP!) everything is else is good but the underage thing, mmmmm, yeah, no.

Hi hun! I wanna actually ask you for a Colin Shea x femboy!male reader smut. Colin has been hooking up with a girl living in his nextdoor apartment. He didn't know that she had a brother who was even more beautiful and cute than her and looks like to be 18 or something also so much lean and shorter than him. When Colin figures out the boy's existence he immediately falls for him. He'd often flirt and with the reader by showing himself completely naked or with only in his tight boxer-briefs highlighting his massive bulge. Colin wants the boy very badly that he always has dirty dreams about him.
So, when he sees the boy reader only in his sinful weardrobs alone in his room, Colin couldn't help but make his way with him (Smut, to be precised)
Daddy kink, boy-pussy kink, pregnant kink, rough oral and anal sex, cum swallowing, body licking(colin recieving), choking with biceps and biting🥵
Oh my gawd, this is...wow...

Here's a request for Colin Shea🍆 x twink!male reader🍑
The reader is happened to be one of the Colin's recent hook-ups shy-sweet little brother and they also happens to live just beside colins room. The reader has a huge crush on Colin and always tries not to lose any opportunity to see him half naked or barely covered. But being shy and assuming that Colin is fully straight, he doesn't give into it that much only to ogle at the hunk from afar. Colin also kinda enjoys to tease the sweet-milky skinned-delicate little boy.
One day, returning from school early the boy hears some obscene little sounds. So, he follows the sounds curiously only to find that Colin is fucking his sister mindlessly. He fully notices the monster pounding onto his sister and supresses the needy little whimpers coming out of his mouth. Quietly shutting the door, he runs upto his room and daydreams about that hunk and the thing between his legs. The next when Colin returns for a second time hookup but finds out that readers sister isn't home. The reader boy takes the opportunity and quickly gets down on his knees in front of colin and begs to fuck him instead with his innocent puppy eyes. Colin oblieges without a second thought [smut happens] colin gets immense pleasure from the boy that he forgets about any other girl he had in the past.
Kinks : size kink, muscle kink, daddy kink, feminization, breedin/pregnant kink, pussy kink, choking with biceps, multiple orgasm, blowjob(colin recieving)
Depends on your comfort😊 love you and your works a lot😘
I love me some Colin 🤭

Colin Shea x pregnant!reader

Colin walks down Acorn Street on the opposite sidewalk from Aly, gearing up to see how things will go down as she meets with the first of the handful of exes he managed to find for her: a real estate agent named Simon.
As they approached the house, Aly explained why their relationship failed, but Colin wasn’t really paying attention.
“Oh shit,” she jumps as he emerges from the front door of the house. “Colin, get out of here,” she orders him none-too-gently, pushing him away for good measure.
Furrowing his brows, he pushes her back, using a little more force. “Don’t shove me,” he complains indignantly.
“What the--” Aly looks appalled, shoving him again with both hands this time. “Knock it off and get out of here!”
The man retaliates, pushing again before it becomes a battle of speed and coordination where they try to smack each other’s hands away and while trying to knock the person back.
“Get out of here!” she protests again.
“Aly?”
“Simon!” she suddenly composes herself and smiles and that causes Colin to freeze.
Did she just put on an accent?
“What are you doing here?” Simon probes, and Colin smirks to himself, understanding why she wanted him to leave. Pressing his tongue into his cheek, he crosses his arms and gives Aly a side-eyed look.
“Oh, I was...you know, just around,” she dismisses casually, eyes drifting to their surroundings as she keeps up the faux-British lilt. “Um, this is Colin, my...assistant.”
With a smug look on his face, Colin reaches his hand out and shakes Simon’s obnoxiously. “What’s goin’ on, man? How you doin’,” he greets him in an exaggerated Boston accent.
“How do you do,” Simon responds, clearly uncomfortable.
“Anyway,” Aly interjects, “Colin was just leaving.”
“Oh no, I can stick around--ahh,” he cuts himself off when she pinches his side. “Actually, no she’s right, I have errands to run.” He gestures vaguely behind him. “I’ll leave you two to...catch up or whatever.”
He stalks off awkwardly up the way he came, sucking his cheeks between his teeth and mentally flicking through his options on what he can do for the day.
He realizes he hasn’t heard from you in a couple days, so he pulls out his phone and dials your number. It rings a few times and he figures you might be at work until he hears your voice on the other end.
“Colin?” you answer your phone as you rush down the street. It’s not particularly crowded--it’s 10 AM on a Tuesday, everyone is already at work--but you walk briskly, leaving you a bit out of breath.
“Why are you breathing so hard?” he wonders casually, “You doing one of those pregnant lady aerobic workouts?”
“No,” you pant, “I’m on my way to work.”
The other end is silent for a moment and you think you may have walked through a dead spot before you hear his voice again. “It’s almost noon.”
“No shit, Bono,” you remark as you draw closer to your building.
“...did you just call me that because I’m a musician?”
“And because you’re Irish--thank you,” you sigh with some relief as the security guard at the front door holds it open for you. “Colin, I have to go through security, one second.”
“Wait, security?” you hear his voice inquire as you place your phone in a bin on the conveyor belt for the x-ray machine along with your backpack and coat. The guard on the other side of the metal detector motions for you to come forward and gives you clearance when the machine beeps and shines a green light.
You wait for the other security guard to finish her inspection. As your bin of items emerges from the machine, you hear Colin’s voice shouting from your phone.
“HELLO? HELLO?! WHERE’D YOU GO?! WHAT WAS THAT BEEPING SOUND? HELLOOOOOOOOO--”
He goes on for an impressive amount of time, garnering perplexed looks from the security guards. You smile awkwardly at them, slinging your bag over your shoulder and draping your coat over your arm before you pick up your phone and bring it to your ear.
“Will you stop shouting?” you hiss into the receiver.
“What just happened?”
“I had to go through security,” you tell him again. “I’m actually really heading into work so I have to go.”
“Wait but why are you late?”
You sigh and press the call button for the elevator. “Morning sickness runs in my family, I had a really bad episode with it this morning.”
“You were puking?”
“Yeah,” you state in reluctance; it’s never a proud moment to admit that you were throwing up. “And I’m still a little nauseous,” you add as you step into the elevator.
“Well...can’t you call in sick or something?”
You shake your head stupidly (it’s not like he can see you) and press the button for your floor as you reply, “Not really, I’m chasing a lead.”
“A lead--wait I thought you said you weren’t a detective.”
“I’m not,” you laugh, the sound echoing in the enclosed space as you watch the numbers tick up to five. Then, you sigh as you reach your floor, “But I still have things to do.”
The doors open and you don’t hear anything, but you know instinctively that your phone hasn’t lost connection. The silence you hear on the other end gives an impression of worry and hesitation, as if he wants to fret over you but isn’t sure how you’ll take it.
You smile, weaving your way through the desks lined across the office space, “Colin, I’m gonna be fine. I’ll go home as soon as I can and rest.”
“Are you sure?” he wonders.
“You’re sweet,” you say plainly as if it’s a fact. You sigh in relief at the sight of a clear path to your corner office with no obstacles--which other people would call “office mates”--and quicken your step the slightest to avoid being intercepted. “But yes, I’m sure.” Entering the room, you set your things down and turn on your system, watching your screens come to life. “Alright, Bono, I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later.”
When he says goodbye, you remind him of the next appointment you have before hanging up, placing your phone in your backpack, and sitting at your station. You begin to sort through the information and compile a report for the team.
A few hours into your work, your mind can fabricate the sounds of a Spanish guitar and trumpet when you hear the door open and a voice speaks.
“Ay, mi corazon. ¡Finalmente!”
“Cut the dramatics, Mateo,” you roll your eyes and laugh as you continue to work, not even looking at him.
“Oh come on, bebita,” he teases, leaning against your desk. “I missed you this morning; Detective Cunningham is a poor substitute for you.”
You scoff a pitiful laugh, gazing over your shoulder to make sure no one was around. “Yeah, I guess he’s not as fun as me,” you agree.
He doesn’t reply for a moment, leaving you to keep typing until you give your mouse a few clicks and the printer at the end of your desk comes to life.
“Go get that, will you? And bring it to Li, she’ll wanna take a look at it. It’s information on Riona Maher.”
“Who’s she?” Mateo inquires over the sound of his boots walking across the linoleum tiles to retrieve the packet of papers. You fetch the stapler lined up at the back of your desk, swiveling your chair around to hold your hand out for the pages.
He hands them to you and the stapler clicks as you attach the pages to each other.
“She’s a contract killer for the Irish Mafia. The most recent intelligence indicates that she’s traveling to San Francisco on some business for them, but I’m still working on those details. I’m hoping if I can find more on her then maybe we can intercept her at Logan.”
“Well, this is a good start, bebita, but I don’t know if this is gonna cut it for Li,” he says, his voice clearly reflecting the uncertainty of his word as you give him the packet and he flips through the pages briefly.
Sighing, you look down briefly, “I know. But just tell her it’s the best I can do at the moment. I have a feeling I have a few more sick days ahead of me.”
At that, he puts aside his work facade, leaning on your desk again and fixing you with a look of concern. “What makes you say that?” his voice lowers, taking on a more serious tone as the crinkles around his brown eyes disappear and his face drops. When you’re quiet for a longer period of time, he grows more worried, “Why were you late, are you alright?”
Relaxing your shoulders, your spine bends as you lose your “working at the computer” posture. You adore Mateo and you’re certain it shows in your face when you look at him.
“I’m fine, really,” you say, fighting the urge to place your hand over your stomach. He’s a close friend; quite possibly the closest one you have, but you’re not quite ready to tell him.
You’ve been good at grounding yourself when you get worried, but the worries come nonetheless. Your parents are pretty much absent in your life--hell, you haven’t even told them! Their absence has left a feeling of uncertainty in the back of your mind. Who could you call when you need advice?
Folding his spine to get a look at your face as you stare blankly at ahead, Mateo snaps to get your attention. “Bebita,” he calls you. “¿Que paso, eh?”
“It’s--”
There’s another knock at the door and you startle, jumping in fright and pressing a hand to your chest.
You look over your shoulder before fully swiveling in your chair to face your other visitor.
“Colin?”
“Hey,” he says awkwardly to you with a crooked smile, raising a to-go coffee cup in his left hand to acknowledge you. In his other hand hangs a white plastic bag with the hard-to-miss “THANK YOU” pattern in red printed on it.
“You know this guy?” Mateo asks you pointedly, standing up defensively, hands at his sides but still poised and ready for action.
“Mateo, relax,” you reply, matching his tone. You get up too and place a hand on his arm.
“Who is he? I’ve never seen him before.”
“Who are you?” Colin challenges, irritated that people seem to just be pushing his buttons all day today. First Aly after he did a favor for her and now this guy…
He has an imposing air around him, a stern resting look on his face framed by his brows and chiseled jaw. His hair is cut close to his scalp, tight curls twisted close to his head. He’s tall as well, dark skin a nice bronze that sits on a muscular frame--
Jesus Christ, Colin thinks as he watches him cross his arms over his chest, biceps bulging even more, with a guy working this close to you in the office, how did you find it acceptable to have a one-night stand with a schmuck like me?
“Colin, not right now,” you admonish him before turning back to Mateo. “You need to calm down, I know him, he’s a friend.”
He looks at you suspiciously. “You sure he ain’t some creepy guy from a bar?”
“Do I really look like that kinda guy to you?” Colin asks, offended and surprised.
Mateo looks him over once before confirming, “Hell yeah, man. You see what you’re wearing?”
“Mateo,” you hiss, “you can’t profile him like that!”
“He’s wearin’ a shirt that says ‘Free Licks’, I’ve barely started profiling him!”
You open your mouth to counter him, looking back at Colin. But when your eyes confirm that, yes, his shirt indeed says “Free Licks,” you know there is nothing you can say in his defense.
Huffing, you decide to get to the heart of the matter. “Colin, what are you doing here?”
“I brought you peppermint tea and saltines,” he explains.
“‘Peppermint tea and saltines’,” Mateo echoes, scoffing at him before looking at you. “What, you pregnant or something?”
“Oh shit, is that a secret here?” the brunet inquires, looking caught.
Pressing your hand to your forehead, you sigh.
“Bebita,” Mateo tries, placing his hands on your shoulders and ducking his head to look into your eyes. “Are you pregnant?”
Flicking your hand up as you shrug, you look at him.
“I am,” you nod.
Pure elation comes over his face, throwing his arms around you and hugging you tightly as he laughs in joy.
“This is so exciting! My bebita having a bebé!”
He laughs and laughs and laughs until he freezes.
“Wait…” he looks at you before he looks back at Colin. Pointing an unsure finger at him, he looks at you again. “Is...is he…?”
“Uh,” you stammer, gesturing to Colin with an open hand. “Mateo, this is Colin Shea. He’s the father of my baby and a musician.” Then, you throw an expectant look at the brunet, “Colin, this is Mateo Rojas. He’s my best friend and a detective for Boston PD.”
Mateo, taking on a standoffish, cool-capped persona, doesn’t offer a cordial handshake to Colin. Instead, he nods, which Colin attempts to mirror, though it looks less intimidating coming from him.
Uncomfortable with the awkward tension in the room, you remind Mateo of the packet in his hand that he needs to give to the head of his team.
“I’ll let you know what she says,” he tells you before heading to the doorway. Colin awkwardly side-steps out of his way. “Nice to meet you, Free Licks.”
You close your eyes and cringe inwardly, huffing a laugh to yourself as you look at the two men again.
Colin tries to puff out his chest to meet Mateo at his level but looks more like a Golden Retriever puppy trying to size up a fully grown police-trained German Shepherd. “Nice...meeting you too,” he pauses, eyes darting around as he tries to come up with a nickname for him, “Detective Pretty Boy.”
Mateo throws him a narrow-eyed look.
“I’ll work on that,” the brunet says bashfully.
“Yeah, you do that,” your friend nods. He throws you one last look and you wave him off.
“Cheerful guy,” Colin remarks as soon as he’s out of earshot.
You laugh dismissively, “Don’t mind him. Mateo’s just very protective over everyone. I imagine now it’ll get worse now that he knows,” you say, looking down and putting a hand over your belly. “Thank you for the tea and saltines, by the way.”
“Oh,” he says, face lighting up as if he forgot. “Right, here.” He steps towards you, handing over the cup and bag.
You carefully set the items on your desk, away from your keyboard to avoid any mishaps.
“Nice set up you got here,” Colin marvels, looking around. “That’s a lot of screens.”
“Yeah, well,” you shrug, “there’s a lot of information out there.”
His head tilts while his eyes narrow, face scrunching up in interest at one screen.
When you prompt him, he dismisses you. “Oh, it’s nothing,” he waves away the curiosity. “It’s just...that guy,” he points at a man whose picture is on one of the screens, “he looks familiar.”
Your head whips around to look at the face in question, concern flooding your chest as your heart jumps. “‘Familiar’ how?” you probe. “Is this just some guy you saw once at a grocery store, or is it someone you know?”
His face scrunches and twists as he shakes his head. “Honestly, I couldn’t tell ya,” he shrugs. “But that might be on me. Y’know, I see anyone who looks Irish and I think I know ‘em. Why’s he on your screen anyway?”
“Colin, did you happen to look at the sign on the door when you came into this department?” you ask. “Come to think of it...how did you even know where I was?”
“Oh!” he says again, “That was actually pretty easy. See, I remembered you told me you worked for the police department, then when we were talking on the phone, I figured you live close enough to your work that you could walk. So I looked up the nearest police station and on my way here I picked up the stuff and when I got here I just asked the receptionist about you. She looked you up in the system and--”
“Wait,” you cut him off with a shake of your head, “The receptionist told you I work here?”
He affirms your suspicion with a nod.
“She just gave my information away like that?”
“Well, you know,” he says pompously, shrugging, “I can be very persuaaaa--!”
You catch him just as he begins to tip over, your desk chair rolling away under the push of his weight when he attempted to lean on it to look cool.
“Yeah, real casanova you are, Bono,” you quip, quickly retracting your hands from his sides as your face begins to heat up. “Well, definitely gonna have to have a talk with HR about that because she should not have done that no matter what…”
You trail off, and he takes it as a sign to continue, “But yeah, she looked you up and told me what floor you were on.”
You huff, impressed. “Have you ever considered going back to the academy and becoming a detective?” you wonder, tilting your head and crossing your arms.
He looks slightly bewildered. “No, why?”
“That was just some good investigating you did,” you compliment with a shrug. “If you did decide to become a detective, I think you’d be good at it. Maybe you can talk to Mateo.”
He doesn’t respond, seeming to half-consider your words with an apprehensive face.
Then, you remember you had gone on a tangent and recalled the initial focus of your conversation. “You sure you didn't read the sign when you came in?” you ask again, pointing your thumb to the side where the front door to your department is, just behind your wall.
“Oh, right,” he snaps out of his thoughts then scratches his head. “Yeah, I didn't. But, uh, I think the receptionist mentioned you work in orgasm crime?”
You facepalm. “Organized,” you articulate, “Organized crime.”
“Right, pfft, duh,” he says goofily. “Organized crime. Wait, is that like the mob?”
“Mafia. The Boston Irish one in particular. That man is one of the ringleaders of their whole operation. We’ve been trying to gather details on him for months. And you sure you don't remember how you know him…?”
“I...I can’t tell you, but wait, the Irish Mafia? You’re getting involved with them? Are you safe?”
“Colin, I’m fine,” you smile, appreciating his concern. “Really. I have security systems in place that leave me untraceable. I’m not usually hacking things anyway, just gathering intelligence.”
“But you still hack stuff--what if they figure it out? What if they realize--”
“Colin, I’ve been at this job for years. They haven’t caught me yet. I doubt they’ll catch me now.”
A figure in your doorway catches your attention, Captain Li standing in the doorway.
“I’m sorry to interrupt,” she says, her tone an even balance of polite and stern, “We need to talk about Maher and it’s...strictly business.”
“I’ll be right there, Captain,” you nod. When she leaves, you turn back to Colin, “That’s my cue. Thanks again for the tea and saltines, Bono.”
“Yeah, you’re welcome,” he says, beginning to see himself out. As he passes your boss, he gives her an awkward salute. “Captain...ma’am.”
You stifle a laugh and wave to him when he says goodbye again.
Captain Li doesn’t say anything, only gesturing for you to follow her to the debriefing room. You find a seat next to Mateo.
“How’d it go with Free Licks?”
“It was fine, I think he’d be a good detective.”
He scoffs, “C’mon, bebita, really?”
“You don’t even know him, Mateo.”
“I know the type. And I’m worried.”
“I’m not,” you rebuttal.
“You’re not?”
“No. ‘Cause I know if things don’t work out with him, you’ll come through.”
He laughs and looks away, but you just smile. It’s a truth you both know.
-----
Back at his apartment, Colin strums aimlessly at his guitar. With Aly off trying to rekindle things with her ex and you at work, he was left utterly alone with his thoughts.
Plucking the strings, his boredom makes him consider your words.
If you did decide to become a detective, I think you’d be good at it.
“Detective Colin Shea, sir,” he says, making his voice low and authoritative. “I just wanna ask you a few questions.”
Pausing, he lets it soak in but waves it off. Leaning back on his couch, he recalls the face of the man on your screen, wondering where he knows him from.
As he tries to identify the man, the face of his uncle comes to mind as well.
He doesn’t speak to Theodore Rohan often, especially after the death of his mother. Though, Colin will say his Uncle Rohan is the only family member that really looks out for him. He checks in very rarely, sends him birthday and Christmas presents.
His father doesn’t even call or sends a card.
Picking up his phone, Colin dials the number and brings it to his ear as it rings.
“This is a pleasant surprise,” his uncle says when he picks up.
“Hey, Uncle Rohan,” the younger man greets awkwardly, “I have a question.”
“Dear God,” Colin hears him sigh on the other line.
“It’s not bad, I promise!”
“Alright,” his uncle still sounds hesitant, “What is it?”
The brunet delves into a description of the man he saw on your screen; ashy blond hair, neatly trimmed ginger beard, green eyes…
“Did he have a jagged scar on his cheek?”
“Uh, yeah, he did.”
“Colin, listen to me very carefully.”
His ears perk up listening to his uncle’s tone. He rarely gets so serious.
“Whatever you’re doing, you need to stop. If you saw him in a grocery store, find a different one. If he crossed you for whatever reason, drop it. That is a man that is not to be trifled with.”
“Uncle Rohan--”
“I mean it, do not pursue that man.”
Colin gulps, frightened into silence and suddenly very concerned for your safety. You’re so certain nobody can catch you, but with this warning, how can you be so sure?
And what power does Colin have to even keep you safe?
“Colin, do you understand?”
“Y-Yeah,” he hesitates, “Yeah, I understand.”

Mood board by @imanuglywombat
Wiping the last remaining tears from your face, you berated yourself for getting yourself into this position in the first place. Sighing you looked to your left, to 'Colin's' side of the bed, where hours ago he slept beside you as part of you believed that you could become a family, where six moths ago he proposed an idea that would change your life forever.
But everything was ruined. It had all seemed so perfect the night before when he was there for you, even though he didn't know why you were upset. You were so prepared to put everything on the line, to tell him the truth. That you had fallen in love with him. That you were going to have his baby. That you wanted to try a build a life with him.
When he stumbled upon the pregnancy test, he had done the worst thing imaginable. He had run away as fast as he could and dove head-first into the first pair of open legs that he could find. You knew that Colin had every right to be angry and upset with you. But you would have much preferred it if he had confronted you, even if he had shouted at you and stormed off. If actions spoke louder than words, you had well and truly received Colin's message. Yes he was there for you last night, but that was only because he happened to already be there. When he was faced with the prospect of actual responsibility, he fled. You now knew what you were going to do.
Cleaning yourself up once again, you grabbed a bar stool from the kitchen and camped out next to the front door. Like a police officer on a stakeout, you patiently peeped through the spy hole, waiting for Colin to fulfil his promise of 'at least one more round'. After nearly nodding off and falling out of your seat, you heard the promising sound of Colin's front door clicking shut. There, out in the corridor crept Colin's conquest. Once you were certain that she was gone you sprang into action. Within seconds you were back to where you were this afternoon, on Colin's doorstep with a bleary-eyed, barely-dressed Colin looking at you like a puppy with something to hide.
“Y/N...”
“Colin, I'm gonna need you to just be quiet and listen to me or else I'm not gonna be able to say what I wanna say.” You started shakily. You looked into Colin's eyes and took a deep  breath. Now or never.
“Colin, I'm pregnant with your baby.” You thought you saw a look of surprise flash across Colin's face and as he opened his mouth to say something you motioned him to stop.
“The truth is Colin is that I'm a coward. What I should have said weeks ago is that I started self-sabotaging the dates because I realised that I had feelings for you. I know you don't feel the same way, and I should have called the whole arrangement off, but I was so scared of loosing you.”
“Y/N I-”
“But I'm not going to be a coward any more. I know I should have said something last night, but when you came over I had just found out and I was freaking out. You didn't deserve to find out hey way you did and I am so sorry.” You paused, building yourself up to say the words that were going to break your heart.
“When you saw the pregnancy test, you ran away instead of saying something. What I did justifies your anger, but I did not deserve to be abandoned. I love you Colin, and if you want to be a part of this then we will work something out. But we can't keep going on like this, not when your solution to everything is to have sex with the first willing participant. I need someone who isn't going to bolt at the first hurdle.” And with the end of your statement you turned around and headed back to your apartment.
“Y/N wait!”
You ignored Colin's pleas as you closed your front door. Not wanting to take any chances, you locked and bolted the door, barricading yourself in with the stool. You would need to get your key back from Colin, but that would have to wait until another day. Surprisingly, where you had expected tears, there were none. You had run dry. But that didn't stop you from spending the night tossing and turning as you had gotten a restless sleep.
-
As Colin watched you close your door, he let out a breath he didn't realise that he was holding in. Closing his own door, he sank to the ground in disbelief as he replayed the last five minutes in his mind.
Colin, I'm pregnant with your baby. With your baby. Your baby.
When he had spotted the test this morning it had not crossed his mind that it could be his. Yes, the two of you had been sleeping with each other regularly over the last few months. But when Colin realised that you hadn't said anything to him the night before, he believed that the father must've been one of the men he had screened for you. Colin knew you weren't sleeping with everyone he had set you up with, in fact you had been barely dating anyone; but he had seen one or two men leave your apartment. What you didn't know that if he didn't hear you knock on his door after a date his night was sleepless; where his despair drove him to wait up to see the man that had kept you from him. Colin knew that he couldn't be jealous, he had come up with the arrangement knowing that this was what was going to happen.
But that cocky, naive Colin from six months ago was an idiot, who could never have predicted the change that would overcome him. When he had suggested his plan, he thought he could have his cake and eat it too by getting to keep sleeping with you without having to commit. But what he had not bargained on was never getting enough of you. If Colin could go back in time, he would punch his former self. He would tell him that the evenings you two had spent hanging out, drinking beer and eating takeaway while Y/N had opened up to him were the best evenings of his life. In fact he looked forward to that more than the sex.
While Colin was confident of his prowess in the bedroom, he knew deep-down he was selfish and cared more about getting his own kicks than making sure his partners were completely satisfied. But he was so desperate to make sure you kept coming back, he did anything and everything. He had put his all into making you feel as desirable and satiated as he could and he had soon realised that putting you first made the sex so much better for him too. Knowing that no one else could ever fulfil Colin in that way, he slowly stopped seeking out other women. You and Colin agreed that you weren't going to be exclusive, but there was no way Colin could be with anyone else.
Colin had always been aware of the voice in the back of his mind that tried to tell him to listen to his heart,  but Colin reasoned that if Y/N was still interested in dating other men then there was no chance that she would want to be with him. Why would you want the Jester when you could have the Prince? Colin may have been no Prince Charming, but he would give Y/N an entire kingdom if she asked.
When he saw those two little lines his world had shattered. Instead of saying something he had made assumptions and had started 'Operation get over Y/N' and you know the best way to get over someone... Colin also knew what happened when you assumed something, and he had definitely made an ass of himself.
As Colin remembered the sound of your laughter, the taste of your lips, the feel your skin under his. He thought of the many times he should have said something. There were so many opportunities to ask Y/N on a real date, to declare that he was ready to move on from his playboy tenancies.
Colin thought of everything he should have said as you stood in the hallway and poured your heart out to him. Colin couldn't find the words to convey everything that he had thought and felt over he last six months. But then he realised it could all be summed up in four simple words. Four words that had been sat on the tip of his tongue since the night before as he saw Y/N stood before him with with tears in her eyes.
I love you Y/N.
Colin had fucked up. Big time. And now he would have to do whatever it took to fix it.
But how?

“So how are your new roommates?”
“Ugh, they’re amazing,” you sigh into the phone, drawing a small laugh from your best friend. “A big improvement!”
“I bet they are,” Sarah chuckles knowingly, “You broke up two years ago, Y/N. It was about time you moved out. Also, Lisa wanted me to tell you that Emily moved out, too.”
“Yeah, they told me during our weekly coffee chat. Lately Colin’s been pushing everyone’s buttons. He’s gone on a late night drag three times in a row now.”
Your best friend scoffs and you can imagine her eyerolling from the other end of the phone. “Anyway, about my roommates,” you speak animatedly, twirling around the kitchen as you hold your phone between your cheek and your shoulder, making sure you don’t drop it as you prepare your lunch.
“They are really sweet and when I moved in they held this kind of housewarming party with the entire team. You remember Bucky, right?”
“Let me guess, he’s tall, dark and handsome? Exactly your type?,” Sarah pokes you gently. Juggling three oranges in your hands, you carefully place them on the counter so you can prepare some orange juice later for yourself and your roommates.
“Shut up, Sarah. Sounds to me you’re describing that actor you’re currently crushing on. What’s his face again? Oh, yeah, Sebastian Stan,” you playfully jab back as you heat up the waffle iron. “So Bucky is the guy with the metal arm,” you comment casually, the lively tone to your words prompting a hearty laugh from your friend.
Since you finally pulled the plug on your miserable post-break-up life with Colin and moved in with your boyfriend at Stark Tower, Bucky is all you’ve been talking about. Sarah is actually one of the few people that are in the loop about your special arrangement with Bucky and Steve and she supports your decision, even though it was a bit of a shock at first. She would’ve never have pegged you as the type.
“Every Sunday he gets up early to make us pancakes. And Steve always makes me a cup of tea before bed.”
“Uhu, sounds like a real dreamboat to me,” Sarah confirms softly when you’re struggling with the batter for your waffles, eventually getting it right by adding some more milk to the mixture. “But I still can’t believe you’re actually living at Stark Tower now, with the Avengers, sharing an apartment with Captain America. Even if you and Bucky have been dating for a while now.”
“They helped me back on my feet, Sarah. I was a real mess after Colin and I broke up. He cheated on me with a model he picked up on one of those parties he got invited to. Do you realise how ridiculous that made me look?”
You sigh softly, running your free hand over your face in reminiscence. “I’m a plus size girl with a hot boyfriend who just happens to be an up-and-coming musician, which was already a big enough scandal because God forbid a handsome man is in love with a girl that isn’t a size two!”
“I’d still be heartbroken and pining over Colin if I didn’t spill my pumpkin spice latte all over Bucky. I’d still be miserable and living at his place, suffering through countless nights of loud sex and beautiful girls moaning his name. I’d still hate my body and harm myself if it wasn’t for Bucky and Steve,” you jump to their defence, pouring the batter in the waffle iron with a sad smile.
The first two waffles are usually a bit of a hit and miss, so you quickly throw them in the garbage bin and make yourself a second pair of golden-brown waffles. As they are sizzling in the iron, you lean against the kitchen cupboards and take a sip of your coffee.
“Yeah, I know, sweetie, I know…”
You bake a neat pile of waffles while you continue to gush about your roommates to your best friend. Another half hour passes and you feel your phone bill tugging at your wallet, so you promise Sarah to call her same time next week.
“Sarah?,” you ask her, your tone suddenly turning serious. “About their proposal… You think I should say yes? I mean, Bucky is just the best boyfriend ever and Steve is… well, he’s Steve Rogers!”
“Y/N, you obviously trust Bucky. You’ve also already seen each other naked, so it won’t be awkward. But it’s a big step and it’ll change your entire life.”
With great care your arrange the table, making sure it looks nice and tidy before you cut the oranges for the orange juice. “Yeah, I know. But I feel like I’m ready. And Bucky and Steve will be there for me, too, of course.”
You’ve just finished dividing it over three glasses when Steve enters the apartment, drops of sweat glistening on his forehead from his morning workout session at the park.
“Good morning, Stevie!,” you greet the blond with a casual wave. “I gotta go, Sarah. Steve has arrived,” you say goodbye to Sarah.
“Good morning, Y/N!,” he replies with a beaming smile as he pecks your cheek and heads for the shower.
“I’ve prepared breakfast!,” you shout after him, grounding some more coffee for when Bucky comes back home from his mission. He’s been gone all night and even though he told you not to worry, that it’s just standard procedure and nothing bad will happen, you can’t help but concerned.
Over the sound of the shower, you can hear Steve yell a sincere thank you. “You are an absolute doll, Y/N.”
Not long after Steve has emerged from the shower and the coffee is ready, Bucky joins the two of you. He looks exhausted, dark circles hugging his red-rimmed baby blues. Bucky rubs his eyes and smiles softly as he sees all the effort you’ve made to put together a cosy breakfast.
“You shouldn’t have, babe,” he thanks you as he kisses the tip of your nose before sitting down.
Steve secures his towel around his waist and wanders to the kitchen table, taking a seat opposite Bucky. You sit down on the empty chair next to the brunet and he snakes his metal arm around your waist, pulling you into his lap. “I’ve got something to tell you,” you announce softly after clearing your throat.
The table falls silent, Steve pausing mid-bite and looking at you in great anticipation. Bucky is the one to break the silence first, albeit involuntarily, as a small moan slips past his lips as he tastes your homemade waffles. “Sorry babe but these are amazing!,” he chuckles as he takes another forkful.
“It’s okay, you dork,” you say as you bump his nose. “So I first wanna say that I love you guys and that I’m really happy I moved in. So after much thought and consideration...”
The tension is palpable and before you speak again, Bucky gently rests his right hand on your knee. “I asked you because I love you. I’ve always loved you,” he says sincerely as he squeezes your knee.
“First as a little sister when you were at your worst and we nurtured you back to health. Then as a friend when you started dating Bucky and now…” Steve releases a deep sigh, searching your eyes.
“You know that my feelings for you… they transcend the boundaries of a normal friendship. I care so much about you, Y/N. You are smart, beautiful and funny. You are my dream woman and that’s why I’m asking you to be the mother of our child.”
“Oh Steve,” you blush lightly as more words of praise reach your ears. Bucky chimes in, telling you how he, too, has come to love you just as much. Both men voice their love for you and it makes your heart grow warm and fuzzy.
“But I’m nothing special,” you chuckle softly, “I’m just a girl with curves.”
“No, Y/N,” Steve immediately interjects, “You’re a gorgeous full-figured woman and I can’t imagine a better mother.”
“Thank you, Stevie,” you smile kindly at him. “But you don’t need to convince me anymore. My answer is yes. Yes, I want to have a baby with you and Bucky.”
Bucky bursts out in happy laughter, hugging you affectionately as soon as you’ve said those last words. Steve joins Bucky in his endeavour and wraps his arms around you, too. “I’m kinda nervous, though. I really want a baby but I’m so anxious I won’t get pregnant. I don’t wanna disappoint you guys. The baby will share Bucky’s genes and mine…”
You turn your head and your gaze crosses Steve’s baby blues. “But it’ll be your baby, too, Steve.”
“You will never disappoint us, Y/N,” Steve whispers into your hair before pecking the crown of your head and kneeling next to you, his eyes still locked with yours. “Yes, genetically the baby will be yours and Bucky’s. But that doesn’t mean I won’t love it any less.”
“I’ve always wanted a child so bad. You know, a family of my own,” you whisper through the happy tears trickling down your cheeks. “And I thought that Colin would be the one for me but then he cheated on me and I saw my dream vanish into thin air, to the point I completely obliterated myself just to please him…”
Your breath hitches in your throat and Bucky’s tender lips kiss your temple, rocking you softly. “He can’t hurt you anymore, love. You don’t have to go back. You’ve got us now, honey,” Bucky assures you, smiling down at you. “We are your family.”
“We’re in this together, Y/N,” Steve adds to Bucky’s pledge as he presses his forehead to yours. “We love you so much, doll.”
It’s unconventional, this little family of yours, but it feels so right. Bucky has always loved you and Steve fits into your world so perfectly you honestly can’t remember a time you didn’t know him. But Steve is still Captain America and the world looks up to him, so it won’t be easy to keep your relationship away from prying eyes.
Bucky has already vowed to cut back on missions once you’re with child, and he will retire as soon as the baby is born so he can devote all this time and his full attention to your little one. Meanwhile, Steve will gently ease the public into the thought of Captain America passing the shield along to someone equally worthy so that in the end, all three of you can watch your baby grow up.

Clinking his beer bottle with four others, Colin brings it to his lips and tilts his head back to drink. His gulps are a little more generous, chugging half the bottle in two swallows.
His bandmates notice, brows moving upwards on their foreheads as they lower their bottles.
“You alright, man?”
“What?” His voice is a little raspy, a symptom that often occurred after playing a handful of songs during a gig. Not that their audience paid much attention; despite the spunky-quirky vibe the start-up company CEOs tried to give off, nothing really hid the fact that they were just hosting this party as a way to hobnob with bigger investors. The pair in charge were visibly exhausted, working themselves to death and in desperate need of sleep.
But there was no time when you had to try to impress people who could potentially give money to your cause.
Colin’s mind was in a similar space, though he had less avenues to go down compared to young CEOs with freshly earned business degrees.
His drummer, Finn, nods to the bottle. “Your beer’s half gone and there’s still a long night ahead.”
Tilting his head, the lead singer lets his arm go slack, the amber liquid sloshing in its glass case.
“Mind’s kinda somewhere else.”
“I’m sure it’s nothing that cute receptionist can’t fix,” Charlie, the bassist, smirks, words intended for Colin but eyes tacked elsewhere.
Turning his head, the brunet finds the girl in question, clearly uninterested in something the woman next to her was saying.
Her interest was on him.
Regarding her for a moment, Colin throws a wink her way to let her know he’s interested. Still, with things weighing heavy on his mind, he turns back to his friends, who are throwing him perplexed looks.
“Normally you’d be on your way to chat her up,” Finn points out. “What’s really going on, man?”
Colin quickly brings his beer to his lips and tilts his head back to gulp it all down. Sighing at the last sip, he scratches the back of his head, the neck of the bottle squeezed between two fingers. “I--One of the girls I slept with a couple months ago...I got her pregnant.”
Matthew, normally calm and collected as the keyboardist of the group, nearly chokes on a swig as he facepalms.
“Pay up Matt!” Charlie exclaims, pointing at him.
Colin’s brows furrow. “What are you talking about?”
His bandmates shrug before his second guitarist pipes up, “Colin, if there were a word for it, you’re basically a slut among men.”
“The hell you mean, Dex?”
“I mean,” he begins, rolling his eyes, “You go home with a woman pretty much every other day. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; we’re all collectively getting less action than you.”
The three other men protest, egos wounded.
Dex ignores them as he continues, “But we had a feeling this was gonna happen. So, we made wagers. Matt thought it was a fat chance, though.”
“Damn,” he hisses. “I’ll get the money by rehearsal on Tuesday.”
“Maybe we should just give the money to Colin,” Finn says with a chuckle as he takes another sip.
Colin’s head pivots to look at him, “What?”
“Yeah, I mean,” the drummer shrugs, “Actually, what’s the situation?”
Recalling back to your dinner the other night and his phone conversation with his brother, Colin explains that his intentions were to be as involved as possible.
“So, full dad duties?”
“Well, not full dad duties,” he shakes his head. “Just...what’s that word for parents that aren’t together?”
“Co-parenting,” all four men supply the word together.
“Yeah.”
“Still gonna fly solo, are you?”
“Of course, he is,” Dex laughs, “If there’s anything I know about Colin, it’s that he doesn’t fall in love.”
“Well, back to what I was saying,” Finn waves his hands, bringing the attention back to him. “Raising a kid’s gonna be expensive.”
Colin releases a single chuckle, corners of his mouth twitching upwards in a smile. “How much could it cost?”
His friends look bewildered at his sentiment, making his face go slack.
“What?” His eyes dart from face to face, the men exchanging side glances with each other. “Guys, seriously.”
They rattle off items mentioning everyday items like diapers and bottles, to other essentials like clothing and blankets.
“Not to mention a car seat.”
“A carrier, too.”
“And a stroller! Strollers are expensive as fuck.”
They continue and eventually the words give way to white noise, overwhelming Colin’s ears to the point where he isn’t sure if he can hear anymore.
He acts on impulse, pivoting to look in the direction where he had seen the girl before and finding her still leaning against the same cocktail table. He walks away, no longer paying any heed to the group of men talking about his impending fatherhood.
As he saunters up, the girl turns away from her friend who is clearly more invested in the one-sided conversation taking place. Setting his empty bottle down on the table, he introduces himself, putting on a dashing smirk for good measure.
She takes the bait, propping her chin on the palm of her hand as she gives her name. Despite knowing what he’s doing, Colin doesn’t hear much of what’s being said. He barely registers the snubbed woman walking away to find someone else to chat with.
“Wanna get out of here?”
“Your bosses wouldn’t be upset?” Colin quips, glancing towards the pair of CEOs mingling about.
“I don’t care,” she says nonchalantly, winking with a fluttery fake lash.
Smiling, the singer nods towards the side exit. “Let’s go then.”
She clings to his arm as he hails a cab on the sidewalk and barely gives him a chance to provide his address to the driver before climbing into his lap and attaching her lips to his.
When they arrive at his building, he haphazardly throws his fare on the passenger’s seat and exits with her mouth on his neck. He fumbles with his keys but manages to unlock the front door. The trek up the stairs was clumsy with eagerness and buzzed bloodstreams, but once within the doorway of apartment 6A, her hands slid up to rid Colin of his jacket and his hands found the zipper of her dress.
Though, he does feel the usual rush in his heart and tingles down his spine when his fingertips graze over the skin of her hip. His cheeks are no longer lifted in a sex-driven smile, rather the corners of his lips fall and dread settles in his chest.
Looking at her face, the memory of you seated on his couch as you tell him the news of your pregnancy flashes through his mind.
Only your face isn’t yours. It’s hers.
He pulls his hands away as if she’s on fire, jumping away to put as much distance between their bodies as he can.
“Colin?” she wonders, her head tilting as her face scrunches up.
But it’s not her face now! He sees you, a result of his carelessness, consequences he’s not ready to face because he doesn’t have the money for it.
His eyes shut tight as his head shakes, heels of his palms pressing into his temples and he knows he needs her leave immediately.
“You need to go,” he blurts out.
“What?”
“I—just please, go, I can’t.”
“What are you talking about?” she presses, tone incredulous as she begins to reach for her dress on the floor.
Colin groans, giving up whatever pride he had left. He begs pitifully, voice weak as he implores her to leave him alone to be miserable.
With one last look of bewilderment, the girl shimmies back into her dress and trudges out the door, heels clicking heavily against the wooden floor.
Colin knows he’ll probably get a complaint from 5A in the morning, but he doesn’t care.
He undoes the buttons from his shirt, untucking it from the waistline in his pants as he goes to the kitchen, seeking out the expensive bottle of Irish whiskey gifted to him by his uncle. He’s stowed away for occasions like this: when the stress is so heavy on his head that he needs something else to make his knees buckle.
He pours a generous glass for himself and downs it in two and a half gulps before undressing down to his boxers and pouring another.
The bottle isn’t close to half empty, though there’s a considerable decrease in its volume when he finally falls onto his mattress and closes his eyes.
Colin doesn’t remember the last time he had a pounding headache like this, but the insistent knocking on his door isn’t helping. In fact, it feels like the throbbing is happening in rhythm with the rapping knuckles.
Groaning loudly, he gets up, teetering as he tries to navigate his way to the source of the noise. His footfalls are heavy, soles of his bare feet slapping loudly against the varnished wooden planks as he rubs his tired eyes.
Opening the door, he’s startled by the sunbeams filtering in through the skylight, clear contrast to the dark cave he’s turned his apartment into with the help of his curtains. His eyes ache even more and he winces at the pain as his irises constrict.
“Hey,” a feminine voice says.
Narrow, disoriented blue eyes look around before settling on another pair of the same color, squinted in confusion.
The girl from 6C, his brain manages to label her.
He hears her sniffing as he closes his eyes and presses the pads of his thumb and forefinger to massage them, though it does little to help.
“God, what kind of night did you have?” she complains, her arm moving to cover the bottom half of her face.
“Do you need something?” Colin mumbles, annoyance dripping into his tone.
Taking a few deep breaths, she removes her arm and hands him a piece of paper.
“You mentioned you were good at finding people,” she starts. “I need to you help me find these people.”
Wrinkling his nose and squinting, he takes the paper from her, trying to make sense of the letters scribbled on the page. It doesn’t help that her writing is sloppy, like she wrote them in a rush.
As his focus adjusts, he realizes the scribbles are the names of men.
“What do you need me to do?” he asks, any information she had previously given him completely forgotten in a pool of leftover inebriation.
She repeats herself exasperatedly, “I need you to help me find them.”
“Ah,” he says as he nods, understanding. “The herpes call. That’s not a fun one to make.”
Scoffing, the girl smacks his upper arm with the back of her hand. Colin exclaims in complaint.
“It’s not that, I’m just…these are my exes and I’m trying to see if there’s something still there with them.”
Somewhere in his hangover haze, Colin can detect a lie, but he decides not to question it.
“Nah.”
“Well, wait, I’ll pay you. Fifty bucks for each guy you find.”
“Tracking down exes and trying to rekindle something is a mess I do not want to get tangled up in,” he explains, handing the paper back to her. “Money or not.”
She takes it, scoffing in disbelief.
“Have a good day,” he says halfheartedly, making to close the door.
“Colin?”
He didn’t hear the footsteps, but he sees your head beginning to peek out from the stairwell as you climb.
“Hey,” he says, straightening up and clearing his throat. “What are you doing here?”
You look confused as you reach the top of the stairs, focusing mostly on him, though your eyes flick to the girl in acknowledgement.
“‘What am I doing here’?” you quote, raising your eyebrows expectantly. “We have an appointment? Remember you said you’d be there for them?”
Swearing, Colin slaps his palm against his forehead.
“If this is a bad time--” you begin, pointing to the stairs.
“No! No, no, no!” he shouts again. “Ah, sorry.” Shutting his eyes tightly, he knows he can’t back out of this one. He can barely provide for the kid as is, he’s gotta be there for them as much as he can. “Um, why don’t you come in, I’ll just get ready really quick.”
“Colin--” the blonde begins again.
“I can’t talk now, I have an appointment,” he dismisses his neighbor.
She rolls her eyes, defeated, and walks back to her apartment. You purse your lips as she passes you, giving her a look of sympathy. The sound of her door slamming echoes in the atrium, making you jump.
“What was that about?”
Quickly shaking his head, the words tumble out of his mouth quickly, “Nothing, that’s nothing. She’s just my neighbor--”
You laugh, approaching his door and squeezing in as he moves slightly to let you in. “Colin, I don’t really care.” You step carefully, using the limited amount of light coming from the doorway to guide your movements to the window. You warn him before drawing the curtain slowly, though it doesn’t make his eyes sting any less. “We agreed we’d have our own separate lives, remember?”
He nods slowly, agreeing.
“Um, I take it you need time to get ready?”
“Right, yeah, I’ll just be a few minutes,” he says, awkwardly walking sideways towards the bathroom. “Don’t go anywhere.”
You shake your head, making your way to the couch. “I’ll be here.”
Tumblr media
Twiddling his thumbs, Colin checks that the back screen of the cab is shut before he speaks. “The baby...do you know how you’re gonna pay for it?”
You seem a little surprised at his question and he doesn’t blame you; it does came out of the blue. “Well the birthing plan is covered by my insurance from my job--”
“No, no, I mean, like...the stuff. Clothes, the crib, food, diapers.”
“Well, Colin, we talked about that at dinner, remember?” You check. “You said you’d help. I took that as I’d be fronting most of the cost.”
“Yeah, but...I’m the dad, that means I should contribute something right?”
“Well, yes,” you agree. “But I’m perfectly capable of covering most of the expenses for them.”
“But-but-but,” he stutters. He’s never done that before. He shakes his head and inhales deeply before continuing, “But I should take responsibility--”
“Hey,” you say, placing a hand on his knee. His thumbs stop. “It’s okay.” You squeeze gently. “Look, we don’t have to worry about that now, let’s just get to this ultrasound and we’ll talk about it later, okay?”
He nods, thumbs moving again. They don’t stop for the rest of the trip.
At the hospital, the nurse confirms who you are as she comes into the room, smiling as you apologize for being late.
“That’s no trouble. You’re here now,” she says, gently dismissing your worry. After double checking some information on your chart, she asks you to lift your shirt and lean back.
Catching the look you give Colin as you roll up the hem of your shirt, it seems she can’t help but comment. “This must be exciting for you two. How long have you been together?”
“Oh,” you both begin.
“We’re not--” he tries to explain, gesturing between the two of you.
“It’s complicated,” you laugh, finishing for him. “We’re...friends,” you explain vaguely, though it’s not very accurate.
She hums in acknowledgement, throwing Colin a look.
Looking her up and down, he throws her a wink. “How long have you been a nurse?” he asks.
She answers as she puts on gloves and gathers supplies to prep the skin of your stomach.
“Well, you chose a good career path. Not everyone can pull off scrubs the way you do,” he flirts.
Smiling, she turns back to the machine, flipping a switch and focusing on it as it hums to life. Colin smiles, seeing the way her neck flushes as he turns to you.
You look unimpressed, cocking an eyebrow up as if to say, Really? Now?
“Okay,” she begins, rolling the machine towards you. She pulls open a drawer in the stand, taking out a tube and uncapping it. “This is gonna feel a little cold, it’s okay if you flinch, but just try not to move too much.”
You breathe a few times before nodding at her to proceed.
You cringe, but relax as she spreads the gel across your skin.
“Doing okay?” she checks, then smiles as you nod. Pivoting back to grab the transducer, she turns to you again. “There’s going to be some slight pressure. It shouldn’t hurt, but if you feel any discomfort, let me know.”
You nod again and she places the flat end against your skin, placing her other hand on your upper abdomen to keep you steady. She begins to move it slowly, gray and white images flashing across the screen. “Relax a little more.”
“Sorry,” you breathe.
She reassures you. “This is an exciting time, but it can be scary too. It’s okay.”
Colin’s unsettled by your nerves. What could you possibly be worried about? You’re in a better position than he is.
He remembers what his bandmates said the night before.
“Raising a kid’s gonna be expensive.”
The sentence echoes in his mind as he watches the image change, focusing on a little jelly bean-shaped figure. Then, suddenly, there’s sound.
It’s rhythmic and fast, sounding strange and he doesn’t know what he’s listening to.
“What’s that noise?”
“It’s the heartbeat,” you say, voice clogged with emotion as you smile.
“It’s nice and strong,” the nurse says, smiling. “I always love these moments.”
“It’s amazing,” you gush.
Suddenly, Colin realizes how much an ultrasound could possibly cost, even if it’s covered by your insurance.
Swallowing, he feels a squeeze in his chest. He can see you talking with the nurse, but he doesn’t hear a single word, only the heartbeat getting louder and louder.
That baby is real, and they’re growing inside of you.
His baby.
His responsibility.
The nurse turns off the machine and begins to clean you up and suddenly the heartbeat stops but there’s another noise. It’s hollow, weak.
Wheezing.
“Colin?” you ask gently, sitting up as you pull your shirt down. It’s only then that he realizes the wheezing is coming from him.
He sees you looking at him before something else catches your attention. He thinks it’s the nurse talking to you, but he doesn’t hear. You nod and ask her for a cup of water.
He hears the sink running, then his own heartbeat echoes in his ears. The door opens and clicks shut.
“Colin,” you say again, standing and walking towards him. He feels your hand on his arm and his knees suddenly buckle. “Whoa!”
Your hands go to his waist, trying to hold him steady. “You need to sit,” you instruct, guiding him towards the seat you were just occupying. He plops down, bending over and coughing. He does his best to catch his breath, but it comes out short and shallow, a series of gasps that make his chest hurt even more.
“Hey.” You cup his jaw with both hands, tilting his head upwards so he can look at you. “In through your nose for four, hold for six, out for eight. Ready?”
You count as he inhales. “Good, now hold.” You count again. “And out.” He exhales until you say “eight.”
He obeys when you tell him to do it two more times, holding onto your voice as you count for him again.
You give him a few moments of silence before you check in on him. “Better?”
“Yeah,” he sighs heavily. “Sorry, I don’t know what happened.”
“I take it you’ve never had a panic attack before,” you say, keeping your hands on his face to give him a once over to ensure he’s okay. Your eyes are soft, a small smile on your face as your palms warm his cheeks. “It’s okay. You’re okay.”
“I’ve definitely panicked, but never like that,” he mutters, opening and closing his hands.
You disappear for a moment, then come back holding a cup of water in his face. “Drink.”
The water is cooling, helping him come back to the moment again.
“Sorry.” He looks down, exhausted and slightly embarrassed.
“Don’t apologize,” you shake your head. “Do you feel better?”
“A shit ton,” he smiles. “I don’t know what happened there.”
“Well, you were pretty shocked when I first told you about this little bean,” you say, hand over your stomach. “I imagine this is just because it’s the first time it feels real.” You pause, then speak again. “It’s the money, too, isn’t it?”
Colin sighs. “Yeah.” Scratching the back of his head, “My, uh, my brother. He’s the first person I called about the, uh,” he points to your stomach. “The ‘little bean.’ Before I called you saying I wanted in, he really laid into me about taking responsibility.”
“I’m sure that conversation wasn’t easy,” you say quietly.
“It wasn’t. And I just feel like I’ve slacked off my whole life but I can’t this time.”
“Will you look at me?”
Tilting his head up again, he looks you in the eye.
You smile. “Look, I’ve been telling you that you don’t have to worry too much about money for the baby. You really don’t, because I don’t want you to spend outside of your means. What’s more important to me is that you commit to showing up for them. Soccer games, talent shows, recitals, whatever. We can work out the other stuff later.”
“You sure?”
You shrug. “If it really means that much to you to contribute financially, you do that. But just don’t deal drugs or anything. I’d hate to hear you’re under investigation by narcotics.”
“You’d really do me in like that?” he quips, mischief in his tone.
“I work for the police department,” you laugh. “I’ll have no choice.”

After a quick lunch, you hopped in a cab and headed home.
Colin walked to his place from the diner, the apartment only a few blocks away from where he lived.
The streets are busy today, a lot of random chatter and tires on the pavement, horns honking and people laughing.
Despite being surrounded by people, Colin is alone with his thoughts.
You’re in a good job, which you’ve indicated is to provide enough insurance for family planning and more than enough money to keep yourself afloat as you cover the expenses needed to raise a kid and maintain your nice apartment. You could probably even move to a bigger place if you wanted, one with two bedrooms.
What could he offer? How could he possibly be a good parent to the kid if he’s barely making enough for himself?
Closing his eyes, he hits the button to change the crossing signal as he reaches the corner of the block just before his apartment building.
He could take on more gigs, if his bandmates didn’t mind. Maybe he’d even take on some solo gigs…
A solo gig…
“Well, wait, I’ll pay you. Fifty bucks for each guy you find.”
“The girl in 6C!” he shouts to nobody, garnering attention from other pedestrians within earshot. He hits the button again, desperately willing the signal to change from the orange hand to the white stick figure walking.
He practically bolts across the street, dodging people walking the opposite direction of him and taking out his keys.
He fumbles as he tries to put them in the lock, throwing the door open once he finally gets it to open. He takes the stairs two at a time, paying no mind to the fact that he might trip and fall. His footfalls are loud and certain to draw more attention from anyone in their apartment today, but he doesn’t care.
When he reaches the top floor, he’s huffing and puffing, but he turns the opposite direction of his apartment to 6C.
“Hey! Hey, Jessica!” he calls as he slaps his hand against the wood, ignoring the golden knocker hanging in front of him.
“I think you have the wrong apartment!”
“No, no, I’ll help you find your exes!”
There’s a pause before the latch clicks and the door swings open.
“Okay, first of all—” she cuts herself off as she takes in his appearance, ragged from the dash up six flights of stairs. She shakes her head and gets back to her point, “I’m Aly.”
“Shit, really?” He pants and tilts his head in confusion. “You look like a ‘Jessica’ to me.”
She doesn’t offer a response.
“Can I come in?” he asks, not waiting for an answer to his question. He whistles at the size of her apartment, feeling a twinge of jealousy that she even has a bedroom. “Damn, your place is nice.”
“I don’t remember saying you could—”
“I’m Colin, by the way. And I’ll help you find your exes, but I want a hundred bucks per guy.”
Shutting the door, Aly narrows her eyes at him.
“Fifty’s all I’m offering.”
“A hundred’s what I need.”
“Why?” Her chin tilts up, half defiant, half curious.
“I’m saving up for…” he hesitates, realizing she doesn’t need to know the whole story. “I’m saving up for something important.”
Colin waits with bated breath as he watches her consider his offer. She bites the inside of her cheek, looks at a spot on the floor as she thinks.
“Tell you what. I give you fifty for the first one, then seventy for the next two, and a hundred after that.”
Running the numbers in his head, he squints at her.
Losing her patience, Aly huffs. “Do we have a deal or not?”
Smirking, Colin walks over to stand in front of her, opening his hand and hocking before he spits into his palm. Grabbing her hand, he brings it up to place it in his as he shakes. She cringes at the feeling, which he laughs at. “You got a deal.”
