This means a layer of precious silver is applied over a less expensive metal core, most often brass. Solid silver tableware does exist, of course, but it is relatively rare and quite expensive. Silver-plating allows the look and feel of silver at a much lower cost.
Electroplating is the usual method for applying a silver finish. An electrical current is used to apply silver to the conductive base. Silver chalices are still being made by companies that cater to churches and Pagan practitioners. But this is a niche market. As a result, finding a vintage silver chalice may get harder and harder as the years go by.
What is tarnish? What is patina?

Like many metals, silver has the property of tarnishing. When the metal is exposed to the oxygen, hydrogen, and sulphur in the air, a thin layer of corrosion forms on the surface. Silver tarnish can range from yellow-gold to black, depending on the amount of silver oxide that has accumulated on the surface. Silver sulfide is responsible for the iridescent rainbow effects found on some old silver.
Air pollution and humidity can cause silver to tarnish faster. But even under carefully controlled conditions, all silver will tarnish eventually. The grand households of yesterday must have had an army of workers to keep all the silver shining!
Not all tarnish is bad, however. Beautiful old silver is said to have a patina—an appealing combination of tarnish and wear. Many metals look quite charming with a bit of corrosion acquired over time. In silver, black tarnish settles into the recesses and curves of the object, making the decorative elements even more dramatic. Some collectors feel the worst thing you can do is polish a patinaed artifact to a mirror finish.
The difference between tarnish and patina is something like the difference between a flower and a weed. Meaning it all depends on whether you find this type of finish desirable.
A vintage chalice covered in silver patina looks very mystical indeed! However, if you’re going to drink from your chalice, you may prefer to remove the tarnish for a cleaner look and feel. In the latter case, it’s always an option to polish the inside of the cup, and leave the outside alone.
Care and keeping of your silver chalice

If all your chalice needs is a simple cleaning, you can wash it by hand. Use a mild detergent (liquid dish or hand soap) and water. Dry your chalice thoroughly before storing it, because any water left on the surface will speed tarnishing. It’s not a good idea to put silver items in the dishwasher, as the harsh detergent, heat, and presence of other metals can damage the finish.
Removing tarnish? The best way to polish a silver chalice is with a polishing paste and a soft, lint-free cloth. Apply the silver polish, and buff to your desired finish. (I use Wright's—or Simichrome for tougher spots—and a piece of clean T-shirt fabric.) A soft old toothbrush will help with any hard-to-reach areas. Give it a thorough hand-washing when you’re done to remove leftover cleaning chemicals.
Avoid cleaners with abrasives and strong acids. Silver “dip” solutions are fast, but they strip away a lot of metal and shorten the life of your silver plate. Also use care when trying home remedies like salt and lemon, baking soda, or toothpaste. Many of them are too grainy and will scratch silver. If you want a DIY solution, try it first on an inconspicuous spot, like the inside or base of your chalice.
Acidic liquids (such as wine and fruit juice) cause silver to wear out faster. Try not to leave them in your chalice for extended periods.
Is it safe to drink from a silver chalice?

Generally, yes. Silver is completely harmless in the miniscule amounts ingested from silver tableware. This is true for both tarnished and untarnished silver. The only people who need to worry about their silver exposure are silver miners, welders, and people taking colloidal silver quack medicine.
What about silver plate? In vintage silver plate, some people worry about spots where the silver plate has worn out, exposing the base metal. Most of the time, it’s not a cause for concern. The underlying metal is usually brass (a copper alloy), pewter (tin alloy), or cupronickel (mix of copper and nickel). Copper, zinc, tin, and nickel alloys are safely used in drinkware—even the modern stuff.
With a very old silver chalice, there is a small chance that the underlying metal could contain lead. Some old formulas of pewter included lead, before the hazards were widely known. If your chalice is a true antique, consider using a home lead test kit. Or consult an expert who can tell you more about how and when the piece was made. If you can’t be sure, it may be safest to retire the chalice from beverage use.

For Witches and Pagans, concerns about used rituals items go beyond topics like lead and tarnish. Magickal people feel that objects carry energy from their previous owners and, for lack of a better word, experiences. These leftover vibes have the power to influence magickal workings in ways you may not intend. Since I started buying and selling vintage chalices, one of the most common questions I get is, “Is it okay to use a vintage chalice in ritual?”
I’m a bit biased, of course, because I absolutely love the energy and appearance of vintage Pagan tools. It makes me proud to have something on my altar that didn’t come from one of the major catalogs. I believe in reducing waste and consumerism. And there’s something exciting and subversive about using a cup for a Pagan ritual after it’s sat through many a boring country club banquet.
With the chalice, at least, I don’t find energetic contamination to be an issue. It may be a bigger concern with other vintage tools, such as blades. But the energy of most old cups and goblets is quite lovely! Which makes sense: Even in the mundane world, cups are used for celebration, hospitality, commemoration, indulgence. Most of these things are in perfect harmony with the occult purposes of the chalice. Basically, there’s not much you can do with a cup to corrupt its basic cup-ly nature.
When adopting it for ritual use, treat a vintage, antique, or secondhand chalice much the same as you would treat a new one. Give it a thorough physical and energetic cleansing, and dedicate it to your magickal needs in a way that is meaningful to you.
A sample cleansing: Wash your chalice inside and out under running water. As you clean it, visualize removing the energy you don’t want, while leaving what is charming and unique. (Much like washing off old wine goo without disturbing the underlying patina.) Run it through the smoke from White Sage or a Lunar incense, such as Sandalwood or Jasmine. Finally, place it out in the moonlight overnight—perhaps with a little offering for the Fae. Ta-da! Your vintage chalice is ready for its new role as a magickal object.

Quiz Review #3: Mayer mucicarmine, alcian blue and muller mowry colloidial iron
Today’s flavor is: Mucin! that’s a horrible statement to start off with and i’m already hating this. we���ll start withMayer mucicarmine, let’s go. 
I’m gonna just begin by saying that I’ve never done this stain and have never seen it done, BUT reading this procedure is making me dread the day where I’m asked to do it. But let’s start at the beginning. 
Mucin or mucosubstance is a secretion found in many epithelial and connective tissues. It is generally PAS positive, metachromatic and basophilic. Mucins are often stained with alcian blue and colloidial iron methods, especially if they contain acid groups. They are primary used to provide lubrication and protection from friction, but some membrane bound mucins are also used to control cell adhesion and proliferation.  Mucins can belong to several subclasses of carbohydrates:
Polysaccharides
Composed entirely of carbohydrates
Glycoproteins
proteins that have covalently bound oligosaccharide chains 
Proteoglycans
long polysaccharide chains covalently bound to small core protein
Now why do we care about finding mucins in tissue? Several reasons:
Some intestinal carcinomas and certain inflammatory diseases will cause the surrounding epithelial cells to secrete large amounts of mucin; it can be imagined as a distress signal in this context
it can also be used to pinpoint the site of a primary tumor 
it can help distinguish undifferentiated mucin negative squamous cell carcinoma from mucin positive adenocarcinoma 
certain collagen disease are signaled by having too much or too little of certain acid mucosubstances 
used as a diagnostic tool for Barrett’s esophagus, in which long term damage to the esophagus from acid reflux gives rise to abnormal cells just above the esophageal sphincter which may in turn become esophageal adenocarcinoma. 
mucicarmine stains are a very handy test to detect Cryptococcus neoformans, the causative agent of Cryptococcosis (an opportunistic fungal disease found mainly in immune compromised patients). C. neoformans has a fungal capsule that contains large amounts of glycoprotein. 
Fixation:
BEST- Carnoys or formol-calcium (ie alcoholic fixatives)
OKAY- aqueous fixatives such as formalin 
AVOID-gluteraldehyde (will lessen stain intensity of acid mucosubstances) 
Warnings and concerns:
The mucicarmine stain is fairly dangerous and is one of a handful of stains that should be performed entirely under a fume hood if at all possible. The official Carson version uses a boiling water bath; the technique my lab uses does not bother with this. The hazards for each component of the stain are as follows:
Mucicarmine stain (overall)

flammable (at high temps; tho aren’t most things?)

How it works:
The aluminum in the mucicarmine stock solution act as a mordant and form a chelate complex in which carmine dye is the ligand. This complex has a net positive charge and is attracted to the anionic acid groups of the mucins present in the tissues. This forms a dye lake. Nuclei are stained by iron hematoxylin and mentanil yellow is used as a counterstain to provide contrast. 
Control:
Colon, small intestine and appendix are all acceptable controls but try to get them as fresh as possible. Mucosubstances degrade very quickly after death and autolysis makes it difficult or impossible to find goblet cells that contain mucin. 
General procedure:
Stain in weigerts hematoxylin, 7 minutes
wash in running water for 10 mins. Check under scope. you want to see black nuclei but not much else. 
stain in working mucicarmine soln for 1 hour. Check under the scope. If at the end of this hour you find that the slides have come out dull, you can incubate them for additional time in the oven until they are bright enough. you want to be able to see red mucin and black nuceli at this step.
rinse in two changes of deionized water
counterstain with mentanil yellow for 30-60 seconds; if you’re nervous, dip a few times and check under the microscope. 
Expected results:
Mucin and cryptococcus will be deep red to rose, nuclei will be black and other tissue elements will be yellow. 
possible Issues and their solutions:
Weak or no Mucin stainin-check your mucicarmine stain. You probably forgot to add alum, so you didn’t get a dye-lake complex, hence no staining. More time in mucicarmine could help.  Also keep in mind that stock solution must be kept refrigerated and won’t last for more than a day at room tempureature. It’s also possible that your mucicarmine is fine, but you overstained with either hematoxylin or mentanil yellow; in the case of the latter everything will look kind of coppery orange. 
weak mentanil yellow-mentanil yellow is alcohol soluble, so run it down fast (10 dips per graded alcohol max). 
Big disclaimer: Carson basically says that mucicarmine is a pain in the butt and that alcian blue and colloidal iron basically do the same things without being as obnoxious. so, onto them. 
Alcian Blue 2.5 
Stains for acid mucins, aka mucins that react at low pH values. It’s not a good fit for neutral mucins, but it is compatible witht he PAS if you want to stain both acids and neuturals on one slide. The alcian blue 2.5 stains for weakly sulfated mucins; strongly sulfated mucins are better demonstrated with the alcian blue 1.0 stain. 
Reagents and their concerns:
3% acetic acid:
corrosive and combustable
respiratory irritant 
skin/eye irrirant 
always prepare anything using glacial acetic acid under a fume hood with full ppe. It’s not just vinegar folks it’s real dangerous stuff. 
always add acid into water, not water into acid.
any excess made should be neutralized with 1M  sodium carbonate and flush down the drain with lots of water. 
1% alcian blue:
flammable
inhalation hazard and skin irritant 
Nuclear fastred
inhalation hazard
skin/eye irritant 
How it works:
Alcian blue gets its color from copper. it’s cationic and is attracted to anionic (acid) mucosubstances, forming salt linkages. Once bound the dye is insoluble in both water and alcohol. We counterstain with nuclear fast red for contrast. 
Fixatives and control:
Formalin or bouin solution are preferred. Colon, small intestine or appendix make good controls (but again, get em as fresh as possible). 
I’ll put the procedure in later, I just realized I didn’t do laundry and I have to go get my scrubs from the basement before i go to sleep FUCK
expected results:
Weakly acidic sulfated mucosubstances, sialomucins and hyaluronic acid will stain dark blue. All other substances will stain pink to red. 
Issues:
if it didn’t turn out right then you probably skipped a step. a good trick is to remove reagents from your bench after you use them.

Muller-Mowry Colloidal Iron 
This bad boy is looking for acid mucins but much like alcian blue it won’t stain strongly acidic ones. It is not as specific as alcian blue, but it does tend to give more intense color. It’s often combined with the PAS to distinguish between neutral and acid mucins. 
Reagents and their dangers;
2% potassium ferrocyanide 
actually pretty safe, just don’t heat it 
2% hydrochloric acid
strong irritant to eyes, skin, respiratory system; real corrosive stuff

How it works:
Colloidial iron in the solution is absorbed by the acid mucins in the tissue. The Prussian blue reaction happens and then, you get, some blue. you know how it is. 
Controls and slide setup:
this one’s a little different. you need a control slide (non-patient tissue), then a patient test slide and a patient negative slide. the negative slide will recive only Prussian blue reaction, which will demonstrate  the presence of ferric ions in the tissue that are NOT bound to acid mucins 
Procedure:
hmmmmmmm yeah i;ll fix this tomorrow heckheckheck
Results, hopefully:
Acid Mucopolysaccharides and sialomucins will stain deep blue. Nuclei will stain pink to red and cytoplasm should be a lighter pink. 
Issues:
This is a really time sensitive stain. If you go over or under time limits you’re going to be able to tell.

Biomed Grid | Therapeutic Properties of Honey
Abstract
Introduction: Honey is a product of high biological value and helps both the growth and strengthening of susceptible individuals. The history of honey begins in ancient times, where for many centuries, it was the only known sweetener. Even today, honey remains a key component of Mediterranean cuisine because of its high nutritional value.
Purpose: The purpose of this review is to inspect closely and thoroughly the usefulness of the nutritional value of honey and the healing properties of it.
Methodology: Regarding the methodology followed, a review was conducted through articles and books related to the subject using PubMed, Google Scholar and Scopus electronic databases with key words: honey, nutritional value of honey, therapeutic use of honey.
Results: The biological value of honey is determined by a series of beneficial effects that it causes to the human organism. Its antimicrobial action prevents the growth of bacteria and other pathogens. Its antiseptic properties help clean, disinfect or heal wounds and burns. Honey besides having a lower caloric value than sugar, it also has many other beneficial properties
Conclusions: In recent years, more and more people are turning to the consumption of natural products, including honey. The beneficial effect of honey on human health is widespread and its use as a food in our daily diet, as a product of superior caloric value, is increasing.

The history of honey begins in ancient times, where for many centuries, it was the only known sweetener. Homer in the Odyssey praises honey and its healing properties, while in the Iliad he refers to the preparation of an appetizer for Nestor, the king of Pylos, which consists of onions, bread, cheese and honey. Later, we come across texts written by Hippocrates, Dr. Galinos, Demokritos and Aristotle referring to the beneficial properties of honey for health and longevity [2].
Pythagoras and his followers used honey daily on their diet because they believed honey had antiseptic and medicinal properties. References are also made for the use of honey in the embalming of the dead. Honey continued to be widely used in Byzantium, while the bee was used as a symbol of Ephesus printed in coins at the time of its peak. Even today, honey remains a key component of Mediterranean cuisine because of its high nutritional value [3]. Beekeeping and honey production are one of the most important sectors of primary production, both in the European Union and in Greece. In Greece, beekeeping is quite widespread either as an exclusive or as a second job. It is a branch of rural economics, which contributes significantly to the income of both agricultural and urban families [4].
Honey is ripe and ready for consumption when it has a water content of 14-17%. Immediately after ripening, honey is transferred into smaller containers to be available on the market for consumption or be stored. In Greece, the glass jar is preferred for the storage of honey because glass is a neutral material and does not react chemically with honey to alter its quality. Simultaneously, the consumer can distinguish the color, crystallization and purity of the honey [5,6]. Honey from antiquity to the 18th century was the only confectionery for the man. The outlook that it has generally a beneficial effect on human health was and it is still widespread throughout the world. It is used as a tonic because of the glucose it contains, which is readily digested and metabolized by our body. It has a beneficial effect on our heart, liver and digestive system. Also, it has good antibacterial activity due to the presence of hydrogen peroxide (oxygenase) and high sugar concentration [7]. The purpose of this review is to inspect closely and thoroughly the usefulness of the nutritional value of honey and the healing properties of it. Talking About Honey
In accordance with Community law, honey is the natural sweetness, a sweet viscous food substance produced by Apis mellifera bees. They produce honey from the sugary secretions of plants - plant and floral nectar - or from excretions of other insects, such as honeydew or by regurgitation, enzymatic activity and water evaporation. Bees convert them into honey by mixing them with specific substances of their own body. Afterwards, they deposit, dehydrate, store honey in honeycombs, which are wax structures to mature (Table 1) [8].
Therefore, school health surveys in both countries have some limitations, which should be kept in mind. Mean height of those in high school in the earlier period of our survey, the 1960s in particular, may not represent the same age groups in the entire population, because the rate of enrollment in senior high school was 58% in 1960, as compared to 92% in 1975 in Japan, whereas the corresponding rate was as low as 20.3% in 1970 but sharply rose to 79.4% in 1990 in S. Korea and 43.2% in 1976 and 72.9% in 1991, respectively in Taiwan [7]. compiles changes in mean height of boys from elementary school 1st graders to high school 3rd graders in Japan, S. Korea and Taiwan from 1960 to 2010 by 5-year intervals. The data are based on the school health surveys mentioned above. In order to smooth the annual fluctuations*5 in the original data (available to the author), simple 3 year moving averages are provided in Table 1(e.g., 1970 = average (1969:1971)). Despite the statistical likelihood that mean height of high school students in S. Korea and Taiwan as well in the earlier years of our investigation, specifically the 1960s and 1970s, could be slightly greater than the national averages then, Japanese school boys at age 17 years were 2-3 cm taller than their S. Korean and Taiwanese peers in the 1960s through the 1970s. It is estimated that the Taiwanese male high school students were slightly taller in mean height than their Korean peers in the 1960s through the 1980s, (refer to Table 1).

Honey is a complex natural product of world agricultural production derived from the bee. As a natural product, any honey, even if it comes from the same hive, may be different in terms of the ingredients contained or the quantities that are detected in the final product [9]. Plant and geographical origin and honey maturing conditions are the main factors responsible for the large number of honey ingredients and, consequently, for the physicochemical properties of the finished product. Thus, honey can contain several substances from 14 different types of ingredients: sugars, organic acids, water, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements, enzymes, flavonoids, furan derivatives, volatile aromatics, alkaloids, colloids [10,11].
Produced honey can be divided into two major categories [12]:
a. Flower honey, produced from the nectar of the flowers, mainly thyme, orange, cotton, sunflower, heather, chestnut and
b. Honey from honeydew, produced by plant exudates or insect-ridden plants. This category includes honey from pine, fir and other forest plants.
The study of honey components, in conjunction with information on its botanical and geographical origins but also other parameters, can explain the interactions that take place and shape its physicochemical characteristics. The physical properties of honey are a series of characteristic properties that honey acquires when it is mature, which can be modified during its storage [13,14]. Some of them are color, aroma and flavor, crystallization, fermentation, hygroscopicity, viscosity and density, its antimicrobial action, and so on. The physicochemical characteristics of honey are directly related to its organoleptic characteristics (flavor, color, aroma, fluidity) and the way the beekeeper or the consumer must manage honey after harvesting [15]. The composition and physicochemical characteristics of honey are among the most important parameters that help define the identity of a honey. The better we know the composition and the physicochemical properties of a honey, the easier it is to draw conclusions about its organoleptic characteristics, its microscopic characteristics and its exact origin, and put it in the right qualitative group.
Regarding the factors that may affect the color of honey, they are [9]:
a. The plant origin: The color of the honey depends on its plant origin; in other words, the plant and the part of the plant from which the bees were fed. As a rule, flower honey is lighter in color than honeydew honey which are dark-colored and black in some cases [16].
b. Moisture of honey: Honey harvested before sealing the cells well, before it matures, has a darker color than the typical color it would have after full maturation [17].
c. Crystallization of honey: Honey usually becomes lighter in color than normal due to the natural crystallization process [4].
d. Storage time and conditions: Stored honey becomes darker in color as a result of chemical changes in its ingredients. Changes in the color of the product are mainly affected by its content of fructose, colloids, copper, iron, its acidity and moisture content. The speed at which the color of the stored product is affected depends on the content of these chemical characteristics [18,19].
e. Beekeeping: The beekeeper causes honey to become darker when [4]:
I. He places the honeycombs in the cells, which were used earlier in the honeybee nest.
II. He does not often renew honeycombs and he extract honey from old black honeycombs.
III. He extracts the honey from the honeybee nest.
IV. He does not use diaphragms for the queen.
f. Filtering: Good filtration immediately after harvesting helps to preserve the original color of honey [17].
g. Heating of the honey θέρμανση του μελιού: Heating the product in any way affects, among other things, its color. The effect is insensitive to low temperatures and significant to high temperatures [3].
Calorie Value
Honey has an average of 304 kcal/100g. Its calorific value is directly related to its botanical origin (Table 1) and it is determined by various factors, such as the sugar content and their individual proportions, the moisture content, the presence of high molecular compounds etc. [7].

Nutritional and Therapeutic Value of Honey
The biological value of honey is determined by a series of beneficial effects that it causes to the human organism, actions that are due to its individual components [18]:
a. Honey sugars are more easily assimilated by the human body. Phosphates contained in honey help to make good use of glucose. Also, vitamins contained in honey, although at a low concentration, ensure the absorption and utilization of sugars [1].
b. It contains significant amounts of minerals and trace elements, essential for humans. The content varies greatly among the different types of honey. Indeed, at least for zinc, it has been proven that honey is found in the most readily assimilable form of the human organism and in quantities capable of greatly contributing to the satisfaction of daily needs of a man. In general, potassium, selenium and chromium [20,21].
c. Honey contains calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamins B1, B2 and enzymes. These components of the honey give him irresistible medical properties [2].

Its antimicrobial action prevents the growth of bacteria and other pathogens. Its antiseptic properties help clean, disinfect or heal wounds and burns [22]. The antibacterial action of honey is perhaps the only one of its biological properties, which is not questioned. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and gluconic acid contained in honey play a primary role for this purpose. Nectar has a neutral reaction [23]. As it matures and becomes honey, the bee adds the enzyme glucose oxidase, which converts it into gluconic acid, while hydrogen peroxide is formed as a byproduct. Honey thus acquires an acidic reaction to the extent that most bacteria cannot grow. H2O2 not only inhibits the growth of bacteria but also kills them [1,21]. A second milder antibacterial property is manifested by the high concentration of honey sugars, which causes the lymph to exit from a trauma. Bacteria are being drawn out together with the lymph, when exposed to gluconic acid and H2O2 action. The importance of H2O2 in honey is that it is continually being produced into honey and it is much more drastic the moment produced [19].
The bacteriostatic action of honey owed to glucose oxidation products is lost when the honey is warmed up. The only antibacterial effect is the one that can cause all solutions with a high sugar concentration (high osmosis) [10]. Finally, honey consumers should be aware that honey, if consumed in large quantities, is fattening. Honey contains an average of 3300 (range 3000-3800) calories per kilogram, while sugar 4000 calories. However, honey besides having a lower caloric value than sugar, it also has many other beneficial properties, as we mentioned earlier. In conclusion, eating up to 100 grams of honey every day has beneficial properties for the human body, without many calories [20,21].
Conclusion
In recent years, more and more people are turning to the consumption of natural products, including honey. People tend to consume natural food again, both by their desire to seek a substitute for drugs in their various health conditions, and by trying to reduce the risks of frequent side effects of synthetic drugs.
The beneficial effect of honey on human health is widespread and its use as a food in our daily diet, as a product of superior caloric value, is increasing. It is a fact which is justified by the properties of honey.

Karl Marx Refutes Francis Crick #panspermia
Many scientists—including some very respectable scientists—have at various times proposed that life on earth originated elsewhere. The general name for such theories is Panspermia, i.e., the claim that life exists throughout the universe, and can be distributed from one celestial object to another either inadvertently or deliberately.
The theory of Panspermia may have its origins in antiquity, however it became popular as a scientific theory in the 19th century. Among its proponents were Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius, German physician Hermann E. Richter, Lord Kelvin, Hermann von Helmholtz, and Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius.
More recently, physicists Fred Hoyle and Chandra Wickramasinghe became influential proponents of Panspermia. In fact, they proposed that many of Earth’s pandemics originated in outer space. In 1973, Francis Crick and Leslie Orgel published a paper in the journal Icarus (19:341–348) entitled “Directed Panspermia,” in which they proposed that life may have been purposely spread by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization.
In 2009, physicist Stephen Hawking stated his opinion the “Life could spread from planet to planet or from stellar system to stellar system, carried on meteors.”
In all Panspermia theories, the question of the origin of life remains unsolved; it is merely consigned to another locality and another time. It is a similar argument to assuming that God created the Universe, thereby replacing the question “How was the universe created?” with “Who created God?”
I always wondered who was the first to raise this type of objection to Panspermia theories. I recently found out. It was Karl Marx. Yes, that Karl Marx. In a letter to philosopher Pyotr Lavrov on 18 June 1875, he writes

When I visited you the day before yesterday I forgot to tell you an important piece of news of which you may not yet be aware. Traube, a Berlin physiologist, has succeeded in making artificial cells. Needless to say, they are not completely natural cells, being without a nucleus.
If a colloidal solution, e.g. of gelatin, is combined with copper sulfate, etc., this produces globules surrounded by a membrane that can be made to grow by intussusception. Here, then, membrane formation and cell growth have left the realm of hypothesis! It marks a great step forward, the more so since Helmholtz and others were engaged in disseminating the absurd doctrine that the germs of terrestrial life fall ready-made from the moon, i.e., that they were brought down here by aerolites. I detest the kind of explanation which solves a problem by consigning it to some other locality.
The trade crisis goes on. Everything now depends on the news that will arrive from the Asiatic markets which, for years, have been getting increasingly overstocked—especially those in East Indies. Under certain conditions, which are, however, not likely to materialize, the final crash may yet be delayed until the autumn.
One truly remarkable phenomenon is the decrease in the number of years between general crises. I have always regarded that number not as a constant, but as a decreasing magnitude; what is pleasing, however, is that the signs of its decrease are so palpable as to augur ill for the survival of the bourgeois world.
