Eating a Big Mac® while gazing at Big Mountains is an experience that millions of Americans can relate to. But little do we ask ourselves, which McDonald's restaurants have the biggest, baddest mountain backdrop?

So I set out to answer this question, using rut, a topographic metric that does particularly well at identifying cities with badass mountain backdrops. (For more info, check out this Mercury News article by John Metcalfe, or my research paper)

Roughly speaking, this is how rut works:

The higher the mountains rise above a restaurant, the more impressive they appear, and the greater the rut.

Hacia el año 1908 se creó la compañía “Colonia Del Valle, S.A.”, que buscaba fraccionar diversos ranchos y haciendas como Colorado de Nápoles, Rural Santa Cruz, Santa Rita, Los Amores, entre otros. Aunque pasaban a través de sus calles el tranvía que conectaba la ciudad de México con el entonces pueblo de Coyoacán y la naciente colonia Condesa, no tuvo un crecimiento importante hasta que se pavimentó la Avenida de los Insurgentes y gracias a ello se construyeron casas de gran tamaño en consecuencia. Dichas obras marcarían una nueva etapa en el desarrollo de la zona, a lo cual se le sumó la construcción de monumentos y el desarrollo de áreas verdes.

Governor Juan Alvarado granted Rancho San Jose y Sur Chiquito, including the land from Carmel to near Palo Colorado Canyon, to José Castro in about 1848. Castro documented a trail from Monterey to Palo Colorado Canyon used by Native Americans when he filed a map of his purchase in 1853. When the region was first settled by European immigrants in 1853, it was the United States' "last frontier".

After California gained statehood, the trail from Carmel to Mill Creek (present-day Bixby Canyon) was declared a public road by the county in 1855. But the California coast south of Carmel and north of San Simeon remained one of the most remote regions in the state, rivaling at the time nearly any other region in the United States for its difficult access. It remained largely an untouched wilderness until early in the twentieth century.

Yankee businessman Charles Henry Bixby bought several hundred acres south of Mill Creek and harvested lumber, tanbark, and lime. Without a road, he resorted to using a landing chute and hoist to transfer the goods to steamers anchored offshore.

Bixby tried to persuade the county to build a road to Bixby Creek, but they refused, replying that "no one would want to live there". In 1870, Bixby and his father hired men to improve the track and constructed the first wagon road including 23 bridges from the Carmel Mission to Bixby Creek.

Further south, the Rancho El Sur grant extended from the mouth of Little Sur River inland about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) over the coastal mountains and south along the coast past the mouth of the Big Sur River to Cooper's Point. It was largely a cattle operation. There was a brief industrial boom in the late 19th century, but the early decades of the twentieth century passed with few changes, and Big Sur remained a nearly inaccessible wilderness.

Fall has fell and you know what that means - as soon as the temps start to drop I start getting in the mood to write.  Here And There and The Carmichael Addendum (as well as the second half of Chemical and most of Body Double) were written during the chilly weeks of Autumn (H&T and TCA were both written in a single Fall) and here in Colorado the season sets in a lot earlier than it did where I lived previously, so...here we go.

*BUT* things are a bit different this time around - I’m working a job outside the home now, in addition to homeschooling both boys.  My father-in-law passed away a couple of weeks ago so I’m looking after my MIL, and I’m working out that whole thing with the gallery (time, time, I need more TIME!!).  I’m trying to come up with funds for another surgery and on top of it all my husband has started having some health issues.  So even though I might be in the mood to crank out a ton of work, my ability to do so is being seriously impinged upon.

I guess this means you can probably expect spurts and bursts of content with dry stretches of empty space in between.  My goal is to stay steady and regular but the universe seems to think my goals are gentle suggestions at best.  If I announce an update is coming and then it...doesn’t come...I apologize in advance.  I’m working as many days at my job as my husband is at his and I’ve become something of this town’s equivalent of Steve Harrington at a shop full of hapless teens, and as pretty much the only adult on staff I get called in off-hours a lot so the kiddos can fuck around and be irresponsible.  Other people’s kids, I stg.  I talked to management this week and told them to stop assuming I can fix everything and keep the shop running just because I’m a grownup and live a block away (I ride my bike to work, it takes all of a minute and a half to get there and get clocked in) so hopefully they’ll knock that shit off soon.  But the Fall tourist rush is about to kick in, so there’s me, herding cats while the kids smoke by the dumpster.  I WANNA BE OUTSIDE SMOKING BY THE DUMPSTER but no I’m running the place.  FML during the hours of 10am-6pm, seriously.  Buy my books so I can quit, I’m begging you.

Antonio Herrera Pérez (7 de  febrero de 2000), mejor conocido profesionalmente como Junior H, es un cantante y compositor mexicano, artista emergente del género corrido tumbado. Se inicio en la música a los 14 años y llegó a lanzar uno que otro tema en línea, antes de debutar con Mi vida en un Cigarro en 2019. Ese mismo año, Junior se volvió viral en YouTube con No he Cambiado y gracias a eso firmó contrato con Rancho Humilde. Su segundo álbum, Atrapado en un Sueño, salió en 2020. No he cambiado, Mente Positiva, Dicen y Atrapado en un Sueño, son algunos de sus éxitos.

Inicios

Originario de Guanajuato (México), Junior comenzó a componer a los doce años en compañía de un amigo. Entonces no sabía tocar ningún instrumento, pero podía escribir con facilidad. Le tomo otros dos años aprender a grabar y ya para los quince tenía uno que otro tema circulando en línea. Al igual que muchos otros artistas, Junior se inicio subiendo temas y covers a YouTube, donde rápidamente ganó notoriedad.

Sin embargo, no todo fue fácil; el artista tuvo que volver a empezar después de que su familia decidiera mudarse a Utah en Estados Unidos. Era otra realidad, otro idioma y un lugar totalmente diferente a su hogar, pero eso no lo detuvo. Junior aprendió a tocar la guitarra viendo tutoriales de YouTube, continúo grabando y escribiendo sus propios temas y trabajó por un tiempo en una sandwichería.

Junior H: debut, fama y trayectoria

Después de algunos años en YouTube, Junior saltó a la escena en febrero de 2019 con el lanzamiento de su primer álbum, un demo de nueve canciones, titulado Mi vida en un Cigarro. En el álbum estaban incluidos: A los 19, El Barbero, El de la Chevy y su primer gran éxito, No he cambiado. No obstante, el tema tardaría algunos meses en volverse tendencia en YouTube. Fue tal el éxito que, Junior, de entonces 17 años, termino siendo descubierto por su ahora gerente Jimmy Humilde, del sello Rancho Humilde.

A Junior le tomó poco firmar contrato para comenzar a grabar con el sello. De esa manera, termino siendo incluido en el exitoso compilado de Natanael Cano, Corridos Tumbados, en los temas Ella, El AK, Disfruto lo Malo y el M4.  Gracias a este trabajo, Junior no haría más que ganar popularidad. Más tarde vinieron los sencillos El de la H, Vivo a Mi Manera y En Mis Dedos un Gatillo (ft. Gabriel Esteban).

El joven murió el 26 de noviembre cuando su auto fue impactado por otro venezolano bajo los efectos del alcohol y hoy está preso en Denver, Colorado donde espera condena. Este viernes a Jeison le ofrecerán una misa en su casa en el barrio Lomitas del Zulia y descansará en un nicho en la Iglesia Santísima Sacramento en La Rotaria. Foto Hebert Colina[/caption] Jeison Onelio González León tenía 27 años cuando se fue en busca de un mejor porvenir. Salió de su casa el 1 de octubre de 2022 con un grupo de amigos y llevaba a cuestas una mochila cargada de un gran paquete de sueños y esperanzas. Esa noche le dijo a su madre que cuidara de sus dos hijos, que iba en busca de trabajo, que aqui en Venezuela no podía ahorrar para tener una casa, que no habia calidad de vida para sus niños y quería trabajar para mejorar eso y brindarle un mejor futuro a toda la familia. Se fue a Colombia, de ahí atravezó el tenebroso Tapón de El Darien y así unos cuantos países hasta llegar a México, a Ciudad Juárez específicamente. Ahí vendió comida en la calle, en una zapatería hasta que el 27 de diciembre logró llegar a Estados Unidos donde estaba seguro que alcanzaría a cristalizar uno por uno ese paquete de sueños que cargaba entre sus macundales "Se fue confiado en que sí podía lograr todo lo que quería y en tan poco tiempo allá se veían los cambios, era al día, muy puntual con las cosas de sus niños, ayudó a todos cuánto pudo a los de la familia. Por eso me siento orgullosa de él", dice entre llanto su adolorida madre. Al llegar a Aurora, Denver, trabajó de todo hasta que se estableció y de lunes a viernes lo hacía como Uber en un carrito que compró con sus ahorros y los fines de semana en la cocina de un restaurante donde completaba para enviarle a su familia. Poco a poco iba coronando cada una de sus metas, compró la camioneta de su abuelo para que su padre la arregalara y ponerla a trabajar, a sus hijos les dio de todo y a sus padres, abuelos, hermano y tíos les apoyó sobremanera. Tanto así que tenía todo planificado: comprar o alquilar un local para montar un taller de reparación y servicio de aires acondicionados con su padre y su hermano Yahir y su regreso sería una sorpresa para los primeros días de diciembre de 2023... La fatalidad... No fue así...La muerte, esa enemiga acérrima de la vida, tenía que hacerse presente y ese 26 de noviembre de 2023  será inolvidable para la familia León González porque se les fue un gran hijo, un hijo muy joven, un padre y hermano maravilloso, a quien le arrebataron de la manera más cobarde todos sus sueños. Tenía 28 años. Ese día se acabó el futuro para dos jóvenes: Su asesino, Jesús Miguel Sánchez, está entre rejas luego de haber sido atrapado en la ciudad de Texas cuando huía y espera condena por haber sido el responsable de impactar con su auto el vehículo donde iba Jeison a trabajar como Uber esa mañana del 26 de noviembre. Las cenizas de Jeison llegaron el jueves a Maracaibo desde Estados Unidos, vía España y luego a Venezuela y fueron retiradas este viernes por su padre, Jeison León, quien las entregó a su esposa en medio de un gran dolor y llanto. Por eso, no hay nada más terrible y triste que el llanto desgarrador de una madre... Ese "así no era" exclamado a todo pulmón por la señora Yelitza González es simplemente un clamor doloroso que explica que esa no era la manera que lo quería de vuelta, pues el pacto era regresar y reencontrarse y criar a los hijos y volver a disfrutarlo y tenerlo entre sus brazos.
