I recently entered a commercial arcade in San Juan, and the architectural details truly impressed me. The concept revolves around creating an open, inviting environment. The interior atrium is a focal point, offering a vast open space filled with natural light, which enhances the welcoming atmosphere. The thoughtful orientation of the building and the dynamic split levels ensure an effortless flow, with ramps and walkways making the space accessible to everyone. The use of steel framing not only ensures durability but also adds an industrial elegance to the overall design. This project exemplifies how a collaborative approach between architecture and engineering can create a vibrant, community-centric space that makes a difference.

To my fellow Architects:

The full text of Whitney M. Young's much-quoted “thunderous silence” speech is much more damning, targeted at the oppressive systems that white supremacy has built:*

"You [architects] are employers, you are key people in the planning of our cities today. You share the responsibility for the mess we are in terms of the white noose around the central city. It didn’t just happen. We didn’t just suddenly get this situation. It was carefully planned."

THIS IS NOT NEW INFORMATION. We’ve been sitting on our collective hands as a profession for DECADES. Time is way up. It’s comfortable to think of ourselves as powerless against the forces of capitalism that pay our fees and provide our livelihoods, but the reality is that we are essential to the process. Buildings cannot get built without us. That has powerful implications for collective action. 

We can demand equitable hiring practices, workplace culture, and advancement opportunities in the AEC industries, starting with our own. 

We can refuse to work for clients that are perpetuating systems of oppression (i.e., speculative real estate practices). Just don’t work for them.

We can seek out and hire POC as our subcontractors and consultants. 

We can build alternative practices founded on business models that do not depend on business as usual. 

This last point is not hypothetical--people are out there doing this. I started FORM Coalition to have the freedom to ally myself with meaningful work that addresses systemic injustices. With the availability of information and collaborative tools out there today, the possibilities are endless. Here are a few architects out there building alternative models (there are many, highlighting Black practitioners today):

I envision a world where each and every one of us can take pride in our work, knowing that we are contributing to building beauty, wealth, and health for all people and that we are not perpetuating systems of oppression. You want our profession to maintain relevancy? Get in the fight. Together, we are not powerless. *To the best of my recollection, I first learned this in a talk that Bryan Lee gave at the ACD Conference in 2018.
