Went to my local thrift shop & found this Lenovo ThinkPad T460. I walked out with it for $32. ($12 was for the power supply & tax). It’s only issue was it had BitLocker. It was decommissioned but not wiped. I removed the drive wiped it & installed Arch Xfce4 base package plus Firefox & neofetch. Happy with this find. Battery is in good shape. Definitely has a matte display.

Messing with older laptops & Linux is better than doomscrolling & tv for me. Your mileage may vary.

my girlfriend installed arch linux for me and helped me skin xfce4 to look like windows XP and it was a very sapphic experience

Just installed XFCE4 for the first time on Debian today from the command line with no GUI. The functional simplicity of the whisker menu was honestly so liberating compared to the utter dogshit Windows has assaulted me with for the past few years any time I needed to edit a fucking word document.

xfce4-panel absolutely detests the way my CRT is seemingly hardwired to shut off after several minutes of inactivity to prevent burn-in.... It's simple enough to kill the process and let the OS restart it, but it's insane how temperamental multi-monitor functionality is in 2025

Скрыть пункт меню в XFCE

Удалил почтовик за ненадобностью, �� менюшка вызова осталась. Если на 1 ПК я редактировал файл /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu, удаляя все упоминания почтовика (вредный и неправильный метод), то на 2 ПК я решил почитать как это нужно сделать по науке: на вики проекта есть прекрасное описание этой операции - https://wiki.xfce.org/ru/howto/customize-menu

Сделал по вики так: ~/.local/share/applications - создаём каталог в домашней папке, если его нет. Копируем в этот каталог файл /usr/share/applications/xfce4-mail-reader.desktop Открываем его и вставляем строчку NoDisplay=true (ниже строчки [Desktop Entry]). Изменения вступают сразу при первом же открытии меню.

Дополнение: в разных версиях XFCE наименование файла может отличаться! Например в версии 4.12 это exo-mail-reader.desktop

That's fucking awesome, hell yeah! Honestly if ever I grow up and out of the config business I think I'd like to use xfce with a tiling compositor. It shouldn't be that much work config-wise while still being a pretty good setup
