MY CONSPIRACY THEORY ABOUT KORTRIJK (a joke?)

The people in Kortrijk are crazy: loud music everywhere, driven cars, distracting screens, drunks, violence, schizophrenics shouting and talking to themselves. There's a reason for this. Many bombs fell here during WWII. The Germans had taken over the station and the British then bombed the station. Many bombs fell next to it and ended up in the ground. In other words, the soil is contaminated with all kinds of metals and chemicals, mercury and lead. Lately there has been a lot of works in Kortrijk, new station project, a large tunnel, buildings that are being demolished and rebuilt. In short, the earth is being turned over. All the toxic substances that remained in place underground are now being pushed in all directions. The toxic fumes come from the construction places, and the mercury and lead come out in the water that all Kortrijk residents drink. The result? Everyone becomes crazy, retarded, violent and noisy. Then you have the 3 years of isolation because of the virus era, and then it's no wonder everyone is crazy. voila. my conspiracy theory. ;)

MIJN COMPLOT THEORIE OVER KORTRIJK (grap?)

de mensen in Kortrijk zijn gek: overal luide muziek, opgedreven wagens, afleidende schermen, dronkaards, geweld, schizofrenen die roepen en tegen zichzelf praten. Er is hier een reden voor. Tijdens WWII zijn hier heel veel bommen gevallen. De Duitsers hadden het station overgenomen en de Britten bombardeerden dan het station. Heel veel bommen vielen er naast, en kwamen in de grond terecht. Met andere woorden, de grond werd vervuilt met allerlei metaal en chemische stoffen, kwik en lood. De laatste tijd zijn er heel veel werken in Kortrijk, nieuw stations project, grote tunnel, gebouwen die worden afgebroken en herbouwt. Kortom de aarde word omgewoeld. Alle giftige stoffen die op hun plaats bleven ondergronds worden nu alle kanten opgeduwd. De giftige dampen komen uit de werkplaatsen, en het kwik en lood komt

in het water te recht, dat alle Kortrijkzanen drinken. Het gevolg? Iedereen word gek, geweldadig en luidruchtig. Dan heb je nog eens de 3 jaar isolatie van het virus tijdperk, en dan is het geen wonder dat iedereen gek is.

"Barcelona", a 1989 celebration in comics form of cartoonist Javier Montesol's home city. Made, as far as I can tell, for the collection of his Opisso y Dora comic strip from Editorial Complot.

In the cartoonist bio on one of the book's French flaps it says that the story is "dedicated to the city that appears as a link between all the material included in this book." True enough, though stylistically the piece is closer to the dry-brush, Picasso-infused expressionism of later work like his graphic novel Speak Low than to any of the work collected within. The story is also free of the irony that had (and has) been a fixture of Montesol's work and the Catalan comics scene as a whole, instead skewing further towards the sincerity of Madrilenian comics from the time.
