AMD Radeon RX 8000 Series: Expected Features And Specs

AMD Radeon RX 8000 Series

After AMD’s new CPUs, GPUs should shine. AMD Radeon RX 8000 GPUs will come in early 2025 to improve on the 7000-series. RDNA 4 may be a mid-range graphics architecture, attracting budget-conscious enthusiasts, according to rumors and leaks.

AMD Radeon RX 8000 Series release date

There are claims that AMD will launch their Radeon RX 8000 series RDNA 4 GPUs at CES 2025 in January 2025 in Q1 2025. AMD’s next-gen GPUs may launch around the same time as Nvidia’s. AMD has historically strategically launched its products to beat competition, but the possibility that they may not produce high-end GPUs this time puts them in separate markets.

The Radeon RX 7000 series, AMD’s previous generation, was announced in November 2022, creating a late-year release pattern. AMD may ship the RX 8000 series in late August or early September in Q3 based on this trend. Unfortunately, AMD has not responded.

The Radeon RX 8000 series’ expectation shows AMD’s dedication to GPU innovation. AMD’s faith in the RDNA 4 architecture’s capacity to compete in the GPU market is reflected in the delivery window, which gamers and fans eagerly await.

AMD Gaming GPU roadmap

Although it has been known about for some time, RDNA 4, which is the successor to the Navi 3x architecture that eventually became the RX 7000 series, is expected to be released in 2024.

Recent disclosures of AMD Radeon RX 8000 GPUs specs have caused controversy. The 8000 series may not have high-end cards, as Kepler on X recently stated that all next-gen RDNA 4 AMD cards will have 18 Gbps GDDR6 RAM. 7900 XTX and 7900 XT have 20Gbps, whereas 7800XT has 19.5Gbps.

GGDR7 commercial production is slated to begin before the end of the year, and the RTX 50 series may launch with 28 Gbps GDDR7 RAM, thus AMD may have missed the mark.

GPU RX 8000 price predictions

RX 8000 series AMD Radeons are predicted to cost more than RX 7000 series. From 2022 to 2023, TSMC raised the price of its 3nm wafer process by 22%, resulting in a $1000 cost differential. When production costs rise, retail prices follow. AMD can only reduce costs by cutting elsewhere, which is difficult in a business where R&D is vital. In software, cost-cutting looks plausible. One example is FSR 3, which was postponed until 2023 and supported just 3-4 games. AMD may be balancing technical investment with product price competitiveness.

Given these dynamics, AMD Radeon RX 8000 GPUs will cost more than their predecessors. The amount of this increase depends on how AMD handles production costs and the competitive situation at release. Paying how much for AMD RX 8000 series?

AMD Radeon RX 8000 series: high-end?

According to multiple sources, the AMD Radeon RX 8000 series may focus on mid-range versions. AMD Radeon has had many layoffs and talent exits, suggesting discontent with RX 7000 and RDNA 3’s management performance. As they move away from competing with Nvidia at the high end, Radeon GPU sales have decreased.

In the high-end segment, AMD has failed to compete with Nvidia despite MCM design, improved process technology, limited power consumption, and FSR 3. RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX costs had to drop to compete with Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Ti, 4080, and 4090. AMD’s Navi 31 and 32 were further challenged by Nvidia’s RTX 4000 SUPER series, showing AMD’s weaknesses in the high-end GPU market and signaling a shift to the mid-range, where it has had better success.

Can RDNA 4 ray trace?

AMD has traditionally trailed Nvidia in ray tracing performance. They come closer to their competition with each generation, but we don’t think they’ll exceed them. RedGamingTech predicts 25% improvements over the RX 7000 series. Nvidia will likely beat this.

Will RDNA 4 vastly improve RDNA 3?

While RDNA 4 will improve architecture, it may not be as large as some had thought. AMD seems to be catching up on ray tracing, which is good. While RDNA 4 is believed to be a ‘bug fix’ to the current 7000 series (RDNA 3), the main modifications may have to wait until RDNA 5.

Finishing thoughts

AMD’s strategy has changed due to Nvidia’s high-end GPU supremacy. Leaks about AMD’s Radeon RX 8000 release date and move away from high-end are disappointing but not surprising. The RX 7900 XTX’s performance disparity with Nvidia’s 4090 and its struggle against the 4080 show AMD’s top-end market issues.

AMD appears to be focusing on their mid-range market, where they have done well. RDNA 4 architecture will allow AMD to release top mid-range GPUs. AMD’s dedication to providing value and performance to a wide range of consumers is shown by this change. We expect AMD’s Radeon RX 8000 series to redefine mid-range GPU greatness and give appealing solutions to gamers and PC enthusiasts.

The Elonex ONE (also known as ONE) was a netbook computer marketed to the education sector by Elonex. The ONE's operating system was called Linos, based on Linux kernel 2.6.21,(1) and the device had Wi-Fi connectivity, Ethernet networking, a solid-state hard drive, two USB ports and weighed less than 1 kg.(2)

The ONE was described by Elonex at the time as the cheapest laptop in the UK at a retail price of £99 in the UK. Its official unveiling took place on 28 February 2008 at The Education Show at the NEC in Birmingham(3) and a shipping date of June 2008 was announced.(4) Customer deliveries started in August 2008.(5)

In February 2008, Elonex stated their vision was for 'every pupil to have their own laptop' to 'improve computer literacy across the nation'. Elonex aligned the cost of the ONE with the aims of the DCSF closing the achievement gap between those from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers. To support this initiative Elonex committed to 'donate 1 ONE to underprivileged children from disadvantaged areas for every hundred sold'.(6)

NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips 

The worldwide AI conference will include accelerated systems using NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips from 11 manufacturers. At NVIDIA GTC, the memory of software icon Grace Hopper will endure.

At the worldwide AI conference taking place from March 18–21, advanced systems with strong processors named after the father of programming will be on show, poised to revolutionize computing. More than 500 servers with various configurations distributed across 18 racks, all equipped with NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips, will be shown by system builders. They will occupy the MGX Pavilion at NVIDIA’s pavilion at the San Jose Convention Center, making the biggest display possible.

NVIDIA Grace Hopper MGX Platform

Building accelerated servers with any configuration of GPUs, CPUs, and data processing units (DPUs) for a variety of AI, high performance computing, and NVIDIA Omniverse applications is possible with the help of the NVIDIA MGX blueprint. This modular reference design may be used to various workloads and product generations. Attendees at GTC will have the opportunity to see up close and personal with MGX models designed for business, cloud, and telco-edge applications including data analytics, recommenders, and generative AI inference.

Nvidia GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips

Showcasing accelerated systems with single and twin GH200 Superchips in 1U and 2U chassis, the pavilion will be connected by NVIDIA Quantum-2 400Gb/s InfiniBand networks and NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPUs via LinkX cables and transceivers. Many of the systems have E1.S bays for nonvolatile storage, and they support industry standards for 19- and 21-inch rack enclosures.

Grace Hopper GH200 processors

With dimensions of 450 x 445 x 87 mm, ASRock RACK’s MECAI expedites 5G and AI services in confined areas at the periphery of telecom networks.

The ESC NM2N-E1, an ASUS MGX server, fits into a rack that can accommodate nodes that are water- or air-cooled and can accommodate up to 32 GH200 processors.

A range of MGX systems is offered by Foxconn, one of which is a 4U variant that can hold up to eight NVIDIA H100 NVL PCIe Tensor Core GPUs.

With its two M.2 ports and six 2.5-inch Gen5 NVMe hot-swappable bays, GIGABYTE’s XH23-VG0-MGX can hold a lot of storage. Inventec’s systems use three distinct liquid cooling techniques and fit into 19- and 21-inch racks.

Lenovo offers a selection of 1U, 2U, and 4U MGX servers, some of which are capable of direct liquid cooling.

A BlueField-3 DPU is included inside Pegatron’s air-cooled AS201-1N0 server to provide hardware-accelerated software-defined networking.

A single QCT QoolRack may hold 16 of QCT’s QuantaGrid D74S-IU systems, each of which has two GH200 Superchips.

Supermicro offers a range of liquid- and air-cooled NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips CPU systems, including the ARS-111GL-NHR with nine hot-swappable fans.

The 1U twin GH200 system from Wiwynn, the SV7200H, has a remotely controlled liquid cooling subsystem and a BlueField-3 DPU.

Eight accelerators may be supported in a single system by Wistron’s MGX servers, which are 4U GPU systems for mixed workloads and AI inference.

The three accelerated systems with MGX, Supermicro’s ARS-221GL-NR using the Grace CPU and QCT’s QuantaGrid S74G-2U and S74GM-2U powered by the GH200:

NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips  pair a powerful NVIDIA H100 GPU with a high-performance, energy-efficient Grace CPU.

Through a quick NVIDIA NVLink-C2C interface, hundreds of gigabytes of memory are shared between them.

As a consequence, the processor and memory complex are capable of handling even the most taxing tasks of the modern day, such processing massive language models. They possess the memory and speed required to connect generative AI models to data sources that may use retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, to increase the models’ accuracy.

Run Four Times Quicker in GH200 Superchip

In addition, for activities like video streaming and online shopping suggestions, the GH200 Superchip offers up to 4 times higher speed and more economy than combining the H100 GPU with conventional CPUs. GH200 systems extended the already industry-leading performance of H100 GPUs when they made their debut on the MLPerf industry benchmarks in November of last year, passing all data center inference tests.

The GH200, sometimes called the NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips, is an innovative accelerated CPU that was created especially for high-performance computing (HPC) and large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

“AMD Arrasa con toda la competencia gracias a sus 7nm”

AMD ha presentado durante la Computex en Taipéi su nueva arquitectura de procesadores Ryzen y su arquitectura Navi de tarjetas gráficas que seria un golpe muy dura a su principal competidor Intel solo para revelar su nuevo Ryzen 3900X en su conferencia de prensa en el E3 2019.

El primer chip anunciado es el Ryzen 7 3700X, que es un procesador de 7 nm con 8 núcleos y 16 hilos que funciona a un reloj base de 3,6 GHz con un reloj boost de 4,4 GHz y un TDP sorprendentemente bajo de 65 vatios. La compañía realizo una demostración de que ejecutaba Cinebench más rápido que el Intel Core I7 9700K que es un procesador de ocho núcleos y ocho hilos con un TDP de 95 vatios.

En la Computex también presentaron el AMD 3900X con 12 núcleos y 24 hilos que tienen una potencia de 4,6 GHz y  105vatios de TDP. Lo mostraron ejecutando Blender mucho más rápido que el Intel Core I9 9920X, que es un chip de 165 vatios de TDP que se vende por más de $ 1,000. El procesador de AMD ejecutó la demostración de Blender un 18% más rápido que el procesador de Intel y tendrá un precio de $ 499.

Se presento el nuevo AMD Ryzen 9 3950X un procesador de 16 núcleos y 32 hilos que cuenta con un reloj base de 3.5GHz y un reloj de refuerzo de 4.7GHz Este procesador mejorado que requiere una potencia de 105 vatios, pero su consumo de energía es mucho menor que las que podemos encontrar en otros procesadores de escritorio de alta gama de la competencia. Por ejemplo, el Intel Core I9 7960X tiene un consumo de 180 vatios.

Este será un golpe muy duro para su competencia Intel ya que AMD le quito mas de el 30% de sus ganancias anuales y se espera que con esta nueva generación ese numero se eleve hasta mas del 50% ya que Intel lleva casi 3 generaciones presentando refritos de sus anteriores arquitecturas, con esto AMD pasara de ser la opción de calidad / precio a ser la opción precio / rendimiento.
