Cormac McCarthy's The Road: A Graphic Adaptation by Manu Larcenet. Harry N. Abrams, 2024. 9781419776779. 160pp. Includes Larcenet's letter to McCarthy about the book at the end.
I've read a few graphic novels drawn by Larcenet that I really enjoyed -- Ordinary Victories, plus a few volumes of Sfar and Trondheim's Dungeon series -- but both were drawn in a simpler style. The stark, realistic way Larcenet adapts McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel is stunning, and makes me feel like it's time to look more deeply into his work.
The story follows a father and son struggling through a wasteland of ash and destruction, trying to get to the ocean and maybe some semblance of safety. The two are wrapped in stained, dark clothing. They're also starving. The pair avoid others out to do whatever it takes to survive and struggle to be good guys.
The book is drawn in color, but it's hard to tell on most pages. There's a bit of color when the sun is up, and some when they're able to risk a fire or light a lamp. But the most vivid color at the beginning of the book is from packaging, on a box of matches and a soda can, things left over from the way people used to live.
Worth noting: Larcenet apparently attempts to follow McCarthy's novel and avoid any reference to the film adaptation. I haven't read McCarthy's book. If you have, please tell me if Larcenet manages to do this. It's so unlike the film I feel like he succeeded, but I'd love an informed opinion.

A collection of essays on Cormac McCarthy’s work in his memory. I found several of his books so riveting that I read them through the night hours, and the feelings and images of beauty, horror, and loneliness have stayed with me. They included The Border Trilogy, especially The Crossing, Blood Meridian, The Road, & The Sunset Limited.

Cormac McCarthy

Read the full article

When they entered the judge’s quarters they found the idiot and a girl . . . cowering naked in the floor. Behind them also naked stood the judge. He was holding leveled at them the bronze barrel of the howitzer. The wooden truck stood in the floor, the straps pried up and twisted off the pillow-blocks. The judge had the cannon under one arm and he was holding a lighted cigar over the touch-hole.

Movement Project 15/01/25 - Artist Rearch: David Pearson, Graphic Designer
Pearson's singular style encapsulates Paula Scher's quote that "Words have meaning, type has spirit." Primarily known for his book covers, Pearson conveys the feeling of his texts purely through font, colour, and texture (with minimal imagery) to magnificent effect. For example, his cover for CormacMcCarthy's The Road uses a monotone colour scheme; brutalist fonts of varying shapes and sizes; and a texture similar to stone or mould to evoke a dystopian world bereft of life or hope. However, to achieve a sense of physicality, and not something that was whipped up on a computer, Pearson used prints (example below) for the McCarthy series for that extra texture.
Pearson distills the core idea of the book onto the cover, so that any reader, with no preconceptions, with get what the book is about immediately: a notion perhaps most succinctly demonstrated in his cover for Walter Benjamin's The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction:
Pearson is one of my favourite designers out there: his work inspires me to think outside the box, and to understand the potential of type and font.
