Imitation caviar invented in the 1930s could provide the solution to plastic pollution, claims Pierre Paslier, CEO of London-based packaging company Notpla. He discovered the cheap food alternative, invented by Unilever and made using seaweed, after quitting his job as a packaging engineer at L’Oréal.
With cofounder and co-CEO Rodrigo García González, Paslier and Notpla have extended the idea, taking a protein made from seaweed and creating packaging for soft drinks, fast food, laundry detergent, and cosmetics, among other things. They’re also branching out into cutlery and paper.
“Seaweed grows quickly and needs no fresh water, land, or fertilizer,” Paslier explains. “It captures carbon and makes the surrounding waters less acidic. Some species of seaweed can grow up to a meter a day.” Best of all, he says, packaging made from seaweed is completely biodegradable because it’s entirely nature-based.
Paslier noted an amazing coincidence—Alexander Parkes invented the first plastic in Hackney Wick, the same part of East London that, 100 years later, Notpla calls home. Since Parkes’ first invention, waste plastic—especially tiny particles known as microplastics, which take hundreds or thousands of years to break down into harmless molecules—has been wreaking havoc in ecosystems across the world.
Plastic pollution is proving especially damaging in the marine environment, where tiny beads of plastic are deadly to the vital microorganisms that make up plankton and which sequester 30 percent of our carbon emissions, “without us having to build any new fancy technologies,” Paslier says.
Notpla’s plans to replace plastic began with a drink container for marathons. This is, in effect, a very large piece of fake caviar—a small pouch that contains juice or water that athletes can pop in their mouths and swallow when they need rehydration. “We wanted to create something that would feel more like fruit; packaging that you could feel comes more from picking something from a tree than off a production line,” he says.
Paslier showed pictures of two postrace streets—one where refueling came in plastic containers and one where it came in edible Notpla. The first was littered with plastic bottles; the second completely waste-free.
The next step was takeout food containers. Even containers we think are cardboard contain plastic, he says, as grease from food would make plain cardboard too soggy. Working with delivery company Just Eat, Notpla has pioneered a replacement for the per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS), the so-called “forever chemical” plastics that currently line cardboard takeout containers. It has even found a way to retrofit its solution into the old PFAS plant, so there was no need to build new factories.
The company is developing soluble sachets for detergent pods, ice-cream scoops, and even paper packing for cosmetics. And there’s plenty of seaweed to experiment with, Paslier points out. “You don’t realize it’s already available massively at scale,” he says. “It’s in our toothpaste, it’s in our beer, it’s in our reduced-fat products—so there’s an existing infrastructure that we can work with without having to build any additional processes.”

look what has arrived! i just had to get them because i was curious and i love cosmetics
Tumblr media
REVIEW: packaging is cute! i love the jumbo sizes of them. wild cherry and frosted mint smell nice, but watermelon smells meh. they’re nice and moisturizing but tbh… they’re nothing special especially for the price. they seem like any other lip balm that’s out there. i’m saying that because his slogan is “the next generation of lip balm” so i was expecting something life changing idk 😭 and im gonna say this too, i truly don’t think nick formulated these himself. i wouldn’t be surprised if he worked with some factory that already makes organic products/lipbalms and just slapped his label on it. trying the lipbalm it doesn’t seem like he has his own team formulating these 🤷‍♀️ overall it is a nice lipbalm. just not worth it for the price i think

what is happening in the world of motorsports?
Williams confirmed they will send Alex's (technically Logan's) chassis damaged in Japan back to their UK factory before China to repair it (so they will both have repaired ones) and their destructor championship cost is already around 2m for this year (that means up to one or two upgrade packages in F1 numbers)
Ralph Schumacher is trying to stir the pot as per usual because he said that Logan Sargeant doesn't have a contract for the full year and he gets contract for each GP individually meaning he could be replaced for any GP from now on (I call BS)
Rumouredly, Mercedes is looking into a possibility of hiring Pierre Waché from RBR
Also, a rumour slash insider info from my comm (maybe others knew but I am kinda shocked): a lot of teams are surprised by the tyres this year from one race to another because apparently Pirelli mixes them a bit more than just for every reason, but the features are different for every race basically (so although Bahrain and Japan had the same allegation of tyres, it's not just the weather conditions and track surface why they act differently)
Marko Helmut spoke to OE24 (Austrian journal) and mentioned that they are ready to give Checo Perez a new contract after they saw his results because he is their best option for the second seat and Checo himself said he expects a lot of contracts being announced in upcoming weeks, including his own future which should be settled within a month
NXT GEN Cup won't be supporting Formula E at all this season due to "unexpected constraints" although it was supposed to support all European races, and they already tested at Misano World Circuit (FE spokesperson also says they want to raise young talents through FIA Girls on Track and other positive initiatives)
Misano will also feature a 30 mins FE rookie test on Friday with some familiar faces like Zane Maloney, Robert Shwartzman, Ciao Collet, Taylor Barnard, Tim Tramnitz, Jack Aitken or Jordan King
Lewis reportedly walked out of an interview after a reporter asked if he was jealous of Ferrari's results, saying "don't you have any better questions?" (go off tbh)
Speaking of Lewis, am I the last person to learn he has his own TV and movie production company, Dawn Apollo Films?
Peter Kenyon, who previously worked in Manchester United and Chelsea, is joining Williams as a commercial advisor
Regarding Carlos still being jobless, Eddie Jordan believes he is going to Aston Martin starting 2025 (but has "no real hardcore evidence") and racingnews365 reported that Audi (and Seidl who already worked with Carlos) are interested in him but want to lock drivers for their 2026 in 2025 already so they gave him a deadline to give his final answer by the end of April on their deal and Helmut Marko said they have no interest in the market right now and you won't hear from them till mid-season at least concerning new drivers or personnel
Lewis is looking into the possibility of testing the monocoque of Ferrari at the end of this year but "doesn't know if Mercedes will allow him"
Katherine Legge will race Indy 500 for e.l.f. cosmetics brand with number 51
Heikki Kovalainen, who underwent a heart surgery, says that he might fully recover thanks to a fast intervention from the doctors
Fernando was asked if he will try to get the Mercedes seat and joked that he is not interested in a team that is behind them in pace, so Toto won't hear from him any time soon
after some F1 tests and current results, Kimi Antonelli now has enough points to drive in F1 with superlicence but since he is still 17, he has to wait to be of age
RB and Sauber are testing in Suzuka these days for the 2025 Pirelli tyres testing (so both dry and wet condition tyres)
speaking of the future of F1, some rumours leaked about the 2026 regulations and it doesn't look good, because to simplify it, the active aero on the rear wing in combo with the engine on full power makes drivers spin out on straights or in the mildest of turns in simulations with a test car - and to avoid it they have to drive slowly to the point of going slower than the current regulation of F2 cars; there are also some concerns about the 50/50 split engine (the problem is it is too late to change the 2026 regs so what they will try now is to make the active aero on both front and rear wing and see how it goes)
like they teased previously and like rumours suggested, Prema is joining Indycar with two entries starting with 2025 season
René Lammers (15 years old Dutch f4 driver) won Ferrari's scouting camp and 2023 CIK-FIA European championship and his father Jan Lammers now told GPFans that his son was offered a 10 year deal from Ferrari but they decided to refuse although it looked promising at first so he will stay non-related to any F1 team and continue with MP Motorsport in Spanish F4
Max spoke about F1 Academy and especially the competitiveness, the ladder to F1 and the impact of F1 teams and I have a lot of mixed thoughts I won't share here but I'm willing to discuss if anyone is interested
apparently during Lewis' talks with Ferrari, he completely omitted his current manager, so he saved money and got the deal for himself (but also this comes from a Czech source that is not super reliable)
also in GQ Lewis said that Niki Lauda wasn't happy with his ventures into the fashion world at first because he thought it would be distracting him from racing
Theo Pourchaire will be on "standby" for McLaren's Indycar car number 6 for the next race (because David Malukas got injured and they are not sure if he will be good to race and because Callum Ilott who is on standy has WEC duties that weekend)
British American Tobacco (BAT) renewed sponsorship of McLaren - they began sponsoring them in 2019 but European Union banned the advertisement of tobacco, now they will advertise electronic cigarettes and nicotine pouch products on both F1 and FE cars

2021 Ford Ranger Comprehensive Review
Tumblr media
Ford is well aware that its flagship Ranger offerings are priced out of the reach of many bakkie fans. The XL Sport version was built to offer most of the workhorse- and lifestyle bakkie experience, but at a more affordable price. We examine "how much bakkie" you get for your money if you go the close-to-bottom-spec route.
Engine: 2.2-litre turbodiesel 4-cylinder
Power/Torque: 118 kW/385 Nm
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Fuel consumption: 8.2 L/100 km (claimed)
While many bakkie enthusiasts dream of owning a Ranger Wildtrak or -Raptor, the reality is that the asking prices of those flagship bakkies have reached astronomical heights. This is not a purely Ford problem as top-spec offerings from Volkswagen and Toyota have both skyrocketed, with the former being oh-so-close to the R1-million mark. Double-cab bakkies aren't only luxurious indulgences for South African consumers, however. Granted there's been a shift towards lifestyle use, but the core roles of business and utility remain. The price band for the Ford Ranger for sale is enormous, so the lower end of the scale is dominated by industrial-spec workhorses, but what if we told you that mixing business with pleasure was not just a cliche?
Ford recently introduced a Sport pack for its XL-grade Ranger derivative. This is not a vehicle we'd usually get for testing as it is primarily a workhorse, but the addition of the Sport pack brings a lifestyle edge that notably broadens the bakkie's appeal. The XL Sport treatment incorporates a gloss-black grille, with a matching sports bar, rear bumper and 17-inch alloy wheels, plus the test unit was fitted with the excellent Ford SYNC3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. This modern unit replaces the rather basic system that comes out of the factory.
The package is a proper back-to-basics offering, but it doesn't feel bareboned. There's no modern Ford biturbo 2.0-litre diesel engine here, with the Blue Oval sticking with the tried-and-tested older-gen 2.2-litre 4-pot turbodiesel unit. Is this mutton dressed as lamb, or has Ford managed to make a compelling value-for-money product? Let's take a look.
Performance and ride/handling
Ford's new-generation powertrains are fantastic; the 2.0-litre engines offer a great blend of power and economy, and the 10-speed transmission intuitively selects the appropriate ratios at the right time. The Ranger XL Sport is different – it uses an older-spec motor and a 6-speed automatic 'box. The 2.2-litre 4-cylinder diesel offers up to 118 kW and 385 Nm, which are sufficient outputs for day-to-day use. It's not the most eager of powertrains when you need maximum acceleration, but you never feel there's a shortage of grunts when overtaking on a national highway. The transmission may not be the fastest-shifting 'box in the business, but you have to remind yourself this is a blue-collared working-class hero. A manual gearbox is also available, but most of our readers are unlikely to go the 3-pedal route.
When it came to fuel economy, we were hoping to see returns of under 10 L/100 km, but excessive inner-city urban driving with traffic saw the consumption figure climb up. By the time the vehicle went back to Ford, the trip computer read 10.8 L/100 km, which was not ideal, but not unexpected. Add a few open-road trips into the mix and we reckon the Ranger XL Sport would dip under 10 L/100 km.
Despite its dapper cosmetic accoutrements, is the Ranger still a capable off-roader? We put this to the test on the vehicle's launch (late in 2020) when the Ford traversed with the kind of obstacles most Ranger owners are unlikely to encounter. The bakkie performed admirably; we even waded through a river to test out the claimed 800-mm water clearance. The 4×4 operation is simple: you toggle between 2 High, 4 High and 4 Low with a rotary dial (4L, of course, still requires you to come to a complete stop and engage neutral. The tyres (265/65 R17 Goodyear Wranglers) helped extensively on the launch, but interestingly, our test unit came with 17-inch alloys wrapped in chunky 265/65 Continental Cross Contact off-road rubber. While we didn't test those, they certainly looked the part.
With such extensive off-road experience under our belt, we conducted more of a "real-world test" of the Ranger in and around Cape Town. Usually, specialised off-road tyres produce unpleasant levels of road noise on asphalt surfaces, but we're happy to report the Ford Ranger XL Sport didn't seem to generate any more tyre rumble than a double-cab bakkie shod with standard tyres. On longer trips, when travelling at higher-than-average speeds, the rubber did make its presence known, but the hum was drowned out by some of our favourite road-trip tunes played through Spotify and Android Auto.
As far as ride quality is concerned, the Ranger is a body-on-frame double-cab bakkie, remember, so when unladen, the rear end can jiggle about, but that's to be expected. In case you don't know, when there's no weight on their leaf-sprung rear axles, bakkies can bounce, jiggle and shimmy at higher speeds. While it'd be impossible to eliminate this characteristic entirely, the latest Rangers in XLT and Wildtrak guise have received some tweaks to the suspension to dial this out with mixed success. The Ranger XL Sport has none of this and it feels old-school, but at this price point, we can't complain.
Exterior and Design
The Ranger XL is, arguably, as basic as it gets when it comes to exterior execution, but the Sport pack adds some notable visual updates that ramp up Ford's road presence/kerb appeal. We've already mentioned the off-road-specific tyres, which are really great from a visual point of view, but their chunky sidewalls are also likely to withstand some serious pothole impacts.
The 17-inch Panther black alloy rims also give the vehicle a lifestyle edge compared with the standard bakkie's stock wheels. There's a big black gloss grille too and we'll bet that'd be an imposing sight in other motorists' rear-view mirrors! A black rear bumper has been fitted, as well as a tubular sports bar. Customers can also opt for black side steps for R5 000. There's a nice sport badge on the rear too.
Interior and features
Given its workhorse origins, it would be rather unfair to expect the XL Sport to have a luxury level of interior spec, but just about everything you'd need in terms of mod cons is present and correct. There is a simple unfussiness to the cabin layout, but some may be put off by the extensive use of cheap-looking and cheap-feeling plastics. This is the bottom-spec Ranger, however, so you can't be too demanding.
We understand this is a basic offering, but the lack of rear parking sensors in something as large as a double-cab bakkie may cause many stressful parking situations. Thankfully, this is available as an extra-cost option. In terms of the requisite features, there's air conditioning, fabric seats, front/rear electric windows, remote central locking, aux/USB connectivity, as well as daytime running lights. The arguably class-leading 8-inch infotainment system was fitted to this vehicle and for R6k, we'd heartily recommend going this route as it adds hands-free telephony, music streaming and navigation into the mix.
You cannot even begin to compare the standard infotainment unit to the SYNC3-equipped system, they're light-years apart. Given its hands-free operation, which is safer to operate, we're in full support of it. Voice command is supported and works well. Saying, 'Hey Google, navigate home' will activate Google Maps and navigation. Other instructions, like asking for music from your favourite band on streaming services, work well and the system will even read out WhatsApp messages and allow you to reply, all without your hands leaving the 'wheel.
Service and Warranty
The Ford Ranger is sold with a 4-year/120 000 km warranty, 6-year/90 000 km service plan, 5-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty, and 3-year/unlimited km roadside assistance.
Verdict
Given the difficult financial climate, we applaud Ford for offering prospective buyers a cost-effective way to upgrade the versatile Ranger XL. Despite its basic underpinnings, there's something refreshing about an honest and uncomplicated vehicle that is fit for purpose. The Sport pack gives the bakkie a welcome image boost, but our favourite part of this kit has to be the wheels. Not only do they look the part, but those thick-walled off-road tyres should soak up the horrendous swathe of potholes littered on our roads. Price-wise, the XL Sport significantly undercuts its flashier XLT and Wildtrak siblings and while more expensive Rangers offer newer powertrains, more refinement and extra creature comforts, the XL Sport offers 75% of that experience at a pocket-friendlier price. That's a win in our books.
You could always look to the demo and pre-owned market too, where significant savings are to be had. The recently revised Toyota Hilux Raider and all-new GWM P-Series are the Ranger XL Sport's key rivals. The former offers legendary reliability and the after-sales backing of a 3-time #CarsAwards Brand of the Year winner, while the GWM is keenly priced and well specified, but still an unknown quantity on the local market. Suffice it to say, it's a huge credit to the Blue Oval that the Ranger remains a frontrunner given that the current generation of the bakkie has been on our market for almost a decade.

PATTAYA, Thailand—The neon-lit red light district screams of sex.
In an apartment near Pattaya’s infamous Walking Street, Auchanaporn Pilasata studies her reflection in the mirror, applies another layer of plum-shade lipstick, and touches up her black eyeliner. In the corner of her mirror are two photographs: one from when she looked like a scrawny 15-year-old boy, and another, post-transition, as the stunning woman she is today.
The 37-year-old, who goes by Anna, has been a transgender sex worker for 17 years. While transitioning, she left a low-paying job in a cosmetics packaging factory on the outskirts of Bangkok to become a cabaret dancer in nearby Pattaya, a beach town with a reputation for wild nightlife. She took a temporary job at a “special” massage parlor to earn some cash. Her very first client propositioned her for sex.
“He said, ‘I give you 3,000 baht [$85]. One hour,’” Anna recalled. “[When] I worked in factory, [I made] 6,000 baht in one month. This is the beginning [of] my story [as a] sex worker.”
Thailand has long been one of the world’s major sex tourism destinations. Estimates of sex work’s contribution to GDP vary widely because the industry operates almost entirely underground. But in 2015, the black market research company Havocscope valued it at $6.4 billion per year—about 1.5 percent of the country’s GDP that year.
Despite earning billions annually, the industry is effectively illegal, controversial among Thais, and highly stigmatized. Now, the debate over sex work is spilling into public forums, with a progressive lawmaker introducing a bill in parliament to legalize it. Its proponents argue that criminalization has deprived sex workers of basic labor rights and protections enjoyed by other workers, making them more vulnerable to health risks, harassment, exploitation, and violence—while making sex work itself no less visible.
Visiting Thailand and not noticing any sex workers? It’s like going to “KFC and you never see fried chicken,” Anna said.
The majority of sex workers in the world are women, and a 2017 projection by the Thai Department of Disease Control conservatively estimated that 129,000 of 144,000 sex workers in the country were female. But it’s men who make the decisions about what they can do with their bodies.
Women held 16 percent of Thailand’s parliamentary seats in 2021, the same figure as 10 years ago. By comparison, women made up 20 percent of Saudi Arabia’s governing assembly and 28 percent of the U.S. Congress that year.
The fight for legalization is an uphill battle. Conservative factions within the country and global anti-trafficking organizations remain strongly opposed to sex work. The U.S. Agency for International Development calls Thailand a “source, transit, and destination country” for trafficking, and opponents of the bill say the sex industry enables widespread abuse of women and children across the country and in neighboring Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
Historical reports of sex work existing in Thailand date back to the 1300s. The modern sex industry in Thailand boomed while serving a wave of Chinese immigrants in the early 1900s, Japanese soldiers during World War II, and U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War. But many Thais grew resentful of its visibility and notoriety. The country adopted the Suppression of Prostitution Act in 1960, followed by the 1996 Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act, which outlawed almost all of the activities associated with sex work and income earned from it.
The push against prostitution was further bolstered in the 2000s, when the U.S. government, the religious right, and abolitionist feminists came together in an unlikely alliance. Their goal was to eliminate prostitution. The U.S. movement gained traction globally as those forces traveled to campaign against sex work in countries abroad, including Thailand.
Within Thailand, officials often downplay the prevalence of prostitution in order to present a more positive view of the country to the outside world and appease constituents opposed to sex work. After a Jan. 14 inspection, police said they were “satisfied” after finding no “illegal prostitutes” working in Pattaya, much to the amusement of social media commentators.
“Why don’t they ask all the girl [sic] standing all around if they have seen some sexworkers,” one Facebook user posted.
In practice, the revenues from sex work sustain a robust illicit economy and can be an important lifeline for women whose backgrounds range from educated college graduates to poor rural farmers. Many believe that some form of legal recognition, either decriminalization or legalization, would help to reduce violence against sex workers and give them rights and benefits that would help them, particularly during difficult financial times.
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill and global tourism dried up, around 91 percent of Thai sex workers lost their jobs due to lockdowns, border closures, and social-distancing measures, according to the World Health Organization. As illegal workers, they did not qualify for government relief benefits during the pandemic.
“A lot of [sex workers] could not pay the rent and they had to sleep on the street,” said Supachai Sukthongsa, the Pattaya manager of Service Workers in Group (SWING), a services and support group. “They worked and cleaned up at the bar in exchange for small money and food, just enough to survive day by day.”
The pandemic also reduced access to health care services. Whether they get their business through dating apps, pimps, or on the street, sex workers face numerous risks to their health and safety. The Sex Workers Project, an advocacy organization based in New York, found that sex workers globally face a 45 percent to 75 percent chance of experiencing violence on the job. Transgender women such as Anna face an added layer of danger from clients who turn violent after discovering their identities.
“When I go to the police station,” Anna said, they don’t “help me because [of] my job, because I work illegal work here in Thailand.”
Sex workers frequently accuse Thai police of extorting or ignoring them. Researchers such as Ronald Weitzer, a sociologist and professor with expertise in sex work in Thailand, also accuse police of being heavily involved in sex tourism and profiting off of the industry.
“The authorities, especially the police, have a vested interest in keeping prostitution illegal,” Weitzer said. “They get payoffs.”
Gen. Surachate Hakparn, deputy commissioner-general of the Royal Thai Police, said he believes legalizing sex work could cut down on such activities.
“I admit that there is corruption going on, but it’s only a fraction of police officers doing that,” he said. “From a law enforcement perspective, if it is legalized, it’s good for the police. We don’t need to keep disciplining our subordinates about corruption. And we can put the resources and time into something else.”
Globally, the legal status of sex work is divided into three broad categories: criminalization, legalization, and decriminalization.
The legalization model regulates the registration, health care, and welfare of sex workers. In contrast, the decriminalization model simply removes penalties for pursuing the activity.
There are also hybrid models, such as the Nordic model in countries such as Sweden and Norway, which blend elements of legalization and decriminalization.
It’s the criminalization model that’s employed by about half the world, including most of the United States. It involves the criminalization of every party: the seller, the buyer, and third parties such as pimps or traffickers.
According to the 2018 Global Slavery Index, published by an Australian human rights organization, Thailand is home to about 610,000 human trafficking victims. Although the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says most of these victims are trafficked for manual labor, some women and girls are forced into sex work.
While the U.S. government says the Thai government is doing an increasingly good job fighting against trafficking, hard-line anti-traffickers remain vehemently against legalization.
“It’s consumption with nothing in return,” said Sanphasit Koompraphant, the chairperson of Thailand’s Anti-Trafficking Alliance. “It’s sexual exploitation.”
But the criminalization model most anti-traffickers support has come increasingly under attack from sex work activists.
A growing body of research shows that criminalization forces sex workers to operate under more dangerous conditions, increasing risks of sexually transmitted infections, physical abuse, and exploitation—including by police. Aside from stigmatizing the work, bans also mean that many sex workers will end up with a criminal record if caught soliciting, making it harder for them to get other jobs and pushing them deeper into the sex industry.
Weitzer argues that criminalizing sex work has not succeeded in stopping its proliferation and has strong parallels to the U.S. war on drugs.
“The evidence is clear that it’s a complete failure,” he said.
In June 2022, Tunyawaj Kamolwongwat, a progressive parliamentarian with the upstart Move Forward Party, drafted a bill that would establish designated zones for legal sex work. To ensure compliance with its proposed regulations, he said the bill calls for random checks to be carried out to verify licenses, the age of the sex workers, and whether illegal drugs are present.
He said the bill also outlines how the industry will be taxed and specifies locations where it can’t be practiced or advertised, such as near temples and schools.
“It has to [be] away from the children,” Tunyawaj said.
But some sex workers also oppose legalization. Juno Mac, a prominent sex worker and activist, said legalization can create a “two-tiered system” in which wealthier establishments can afford to comply with regulations, while marginalized sex workers operating independently cannot.
Rather than the special regulation and taxation that comes with legalization, Mac prefers decriminalization, which treats sex work like any other work.
Weitzer noted that decriminalization also has limitations, with the lack of regulations allowing existing bad actors—rampant throughout the industry—to continue exploiting workers.
But its supporters say the decriminalization model is more likely to help sex workers better integrate into mainstream society.
“If [we have] legalization, that means that we have the specific law to say this kind of job [is] legal. But we don’t want to have a specific law,” said Surang Janyam, the founder and director of SWING. “If we have specific laws for sex workers, we should have specific laws with every occupation. Decriminalize will [make us] equal as other people.”
Whether through legalization or decriminalization, Weitzer said the odds are stacked against changing the legal status of sex work.
“The majority of legislators are opposed to it, and every time it’s been proposed in the past, I don’t think it’s even gotten out of committee,” Weitzer said.
The last major push was in 2003, when proposed legislation was debated but failed to pass.
Tunyawaj’s June 2022 bill was not reviewed by the board of the parliamentary committee for youth, women, and other vulnerable groups until November 2022. At that point, the committee recommended transferring it to Thailand’s Ministry of Social Development and Human Security. The draft bill will be reviewed again in the next term of the government, and Tunyawaj hopes that having the backing of the Ministry will improve its chances. The fate of the bill now rests in the hands the new government, which will be elected in May.
If reelected, Tunyawaj promises to “keep pushing this bill.”
His coalition is growing. Surachate said the main thing missing is political will.
“The government can solve this matter, if they take it seriously,” he said.

Role and Importance of Cartoning Machines in Modern Packaging
In today's fast-paced industrial landscape, efficiency and automation are paramount, especially in the packaging sector. Among the various types of packaging machinery, cartoning machine stands out as a crucial component in the packaging line. This article delves into the significance, types, and advancements in cartoning machines, highlighting their role in optimizing production processes across various industries.
What is a Cartoning Machine?
A cartoning machine is an automated device designed to form, fill, and seal cartons or boxes, which are typically made of paperboard or corrugated fiberboard. These machines are widely used in industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and consumer goods, where products need to be packaged efficiently and securely for retail or distribution.
Types of Cartoning Machines
Cartoning machines come in various types, each tailored to specific packaging needs:
Horizontal Cartoning Machines:
These machines handle products that are inserted horizontally into the carton. They are ideal for packaging items like bottles, tubes, sachets, or any product that can be laid flat.
Horizontal cartoning machines are often used in the food industry for products like cereal boxes, frozen foods, and confectionery.
Vertical Cartoning Machines:
In this type, products are inserted vertically into the carton. They are typically used for packaging products like jars, cans, or any item that requires vertical stacking.
Vertical cartoning machines are prevalent in the pharmaceutical industry, where they are used to package bottles of medicine, vials, or small cartons of tablets.
Wrap-Around Cartoning Machines:
These machines wrap the carton around the product rather than inserting the product into a pre-formed carton. This method provides a snug fit, reducing the need for additional packing material.
Wrap-around cartoning is common in industries where product integrity during transit is a priority, such as in the beverage industry.
Sleeve Cartoning Machines:
Sleeve cartoning machines place a sleeve around the product, leaving the ends open. This type is often used for multi-pack items like canned beverages or boxes of toothpaste.
They are popular in the food and beverage industry for their ability to create attractive, easy-to-handle multipacks.
Key Features and Benefits of Cartoning Machines
Automation: One of the primary advantages of cartoning machines is their ability to automate the packaging process. This not only speeds up production but also reduces the need for manual labor, thereby lowering operational costs.
Consistency and Precision: Cartoning machines are designed to maintain high levels of consistency and precision, ensuring that each carton is filled, sealed, and labeled correctly. This reduces the risk of packaging errors, which can lead to product damage or recalls.
Versatility: Modern cartoning machines are highly versatile and can handle a wide range of product sizes and shapes. This flexibility is crucial for industries that produce a variety of products or frequently change packaging designs.
Compact Design: Many cartoning machines are designed to occupy minimal floor space, making them suitable for factories with limited space. Despite their compact size, these machines often come equipped with advanced features like touch-screen controls, automated size adjustments, and integrated quality control systems.
Sustainability: As sustainability becomes a focal point in manufacturing, many packaging robots are designed to minimize waste. They optimize material usage and are compatible with eco-friendly packaging materials, helping companies reduce their environmental footprint.
Advancements in Cartoning Technology
The evolution of cartoning machines has been marked by significant technological advancements aimed at enhancing efficiency and adaptability:
Robotics and AI Integration: The integration of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized cartoning machines. These technologies enable machines to adapt to various packaging needs dynamically, improving speed and accuracy. AI-driven systems can also predict maintenance needs, reducing downtime.
Smart Packaging: Modern cartoning machines are increasingly equipped with smart packaging features, such as QR codes and RFID tags, that enhance product traceability and consumer engagement. These features are particularly valuable in industries like pharmaceuticals, where tracking and authenticity are critical.
High-Speed Operation: The demand for higher production rates has led to the development of high-speed cartoning machines capable of processing hundreds of cartons per minute. These machines are essential for large-scale manufacturing operations, where efficiency is key to meeting market demand.
Customization and Modularity: Today's cartoning machines offer a high degree of customization, allowing manufacturers to tailor the machines to their specific needs. Modularity in design enables companies to add or remove features as required, ensuring that the machine evolves with their production demands.
Conclusion
Cartoning machines play a pivotal role in the modern packaging industry, offering a blend of automation, precision, and versatility that is essential for efficient production. As technology continues to advance, these machines are becoming smarter, faster, and more adaptable, meeting the ever-changing needs of industries worldwide. For businesses looking to optimize their packaging processes, investing in a state-of-the-art cartoning machine is a step towards achieving greater efficiency, consistency, and sustainability in their operations.

Cream Filling Machine
One of the most popular machines in the cosmetics industry is the cosmetic cream filling machine. The food, chemical, and related industries also use this machine. Because the filling and screw capping modules are constructed on the same base and share a similar motor, the monoblock design conserves space. Volumetric, positive displacement of product using piston and cylinder configurations is the filling concept. The ability to adjust the volumes of each piston by adjusting the two cam tracks is another notable feature of this Rotary filler. The cams track rollers are also designed to allow for more precise volume adjustment of individual cylinders. Because bottles in the Monoblock filling and sealing method are sealed right away after filling, extremely high QMP standards are also guaranteed. Accurate sealing is provided by the rotational sealing module, which matches filling. Particles of dust and caps are kept out of filled bottles by an automated cap feeder installed on a separate column. The Monoblock machine contains built-in online automated features, such as sensors that detect bottle falls and cause the machine to stop at the infeed, additional bottle accumulation at the outfeed, and cap accumulation at the feeder stop.

Ruparel Foods installs Konica Minolta’s Accuriolabel 230
Tumblr media
Gujarat-based Ruparel Foods (RFPL), part of Ruparel Group of Industries, recently invested in an Accuriolabel 230 at its packaging plant. Ruparel Foods – a premier packer, manufacturer, and exporter of private-label peanut butter to many countries – has been producing peanut butter since 2007. The Ruparel Group of Industries also consists of Ruparel Plastics, which manufactures PP and HDPE 3-strand ropes as well as Ruparel Nets, makers of HDPE fishing nets.
Ruparel Foods hopes to capitalize on the peanut butter market in the export regions. The company’s managing director Vishal Ruparel says RFPL is the largest manufacturer and exporter of peanut butter and paste from India in different variants and flavors. “We are the winners of the Peanut Butter award in the highest exports category, awarded by the Indian Oilseeds & Produce Export Promotion Council (IOPEPC) for the last four consecutive years.”
The AccurioLabel 230 is a digital label printing system that offers enhanced productivity, job flexibility, operability, and excellent image quality at an affordable cost. It is said to be a perfect fit for business expansion and parallel use with existing analog presses. Digital label printing offers several benefits such as fast turnaround, no plate making, high profitability, and skillless operations. “A printing system that offers enhanced productivity, job flexibility, operability, and enhanced image quality was our requirement and that is why we installed this technology,” he said.
The digital label press is advantageous for printing thin line expressions, variable data printing, and barcode printing, convenient for small point characters.
