Howard Benson Talks Early My Chemical Romance

Howard Benson talked with Grammy.com about working on My Chemical Romance’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge: Nobody wanted to produce them because their record before mine was a thrash record. My manager said to me, “You need to meet these guys. Something is going on with them.” [When] I met them, [they had] no songs [to play for me]. But I looked the singer [Gerard Way] in the eye and I’d done enough at that point in my life where I had this feeling about this kid. He was going to be a star.  I asked him, “Are you worried about the 3,000 fans you have? Or do you want to have 300,000,000 fans? Which kind of record are we going to make?” He goes, “F— the 3,000 fans.” I was like, “Okay, we can do business.” Their A&R guy Craig Aaronson called me up one night and goes, “At the end of one of these cassettes is a lyric that goes, ‘I’m not okay.'” I remember going to rehearsal and saying, “We have to write a song around that.” [Gerard] wrote the song literally overnight, came back the next day with a half-written song. It's been announced that the support band for the Australian shows will be Jimmy Eats World! I haven't heard of them (I'm sorry I literally don't know anyone) have you?

YES im so excited jimmy eat world are fucking amazing!! honestly i would not be surprised if you do know a song or two of theirs without realising - the middle and sweetness are both pretty iconic. also, jimmy eat world and my Chem go WAYYY back. craig aaronson (who would go on to become mcr's a&r guy) helped discover them. back when my chem were playing bars and vfw halls to crowds of like 10-30 people, maybe a few dozen max, jimmy eat world were headlining a music festival. coheed were meant to be on before them but they had to pull out and jimmy eat world offered my chem the spot last minute. i can't find the interview/s where they speak about it off the top of my head, but they were playing to a couple of thousand people so it was the biggest crowd they'd ever played by a long shot, and for mcr it was both a huge boost of confidence (they recount looking up and seeing the crowd bouncing to headfirst for halos and being absolutely psyched) and a genuine visibility boost that helped get their name out there when they really needed it. they often credit that show as their first real big break. here's this little article abt it that makes me crazy like ooogh they had no idea...

jimmy eat world's music also has quite a bit in common with my chem - they inspired my chem a lot and are really one of the bands that helped pave the way for a band like mcr to get a lot of radio play. clarity was like a hugely significant emo album that definitely influenced the course of the scene. also, the guys are just really decent dudes! one of the few interview appearances gerard's done in recent years was with the lead singer jim adkins for his podcast. they're super worth a listen - start with bleed american, it's a great album <333
