6/25/23: It was 50 years ago this month, June 1973, Budgie would release their third album Never Turn Your Back on a Friend. I don't think this album is nearly as strong as their previous two BUT it does open up with probably the band's most well-known song 'Breadfan'. This tune was later covered by Metallica for their 1987 Garage Days compilation EP (later full LP)... along with the also-covered Budgie song on that record, 'Crash Course In Brain Surgery', I would know nothing about Budgie. Anyway, 'Breadfan' is Budgie distilled... hard, fast guitar riff, slow middle bridge, big loud ending... I would bet numerous heavy metal and thrash artists, besides Metallica even, look back on this song as being somewhat seminal. Track two is itself a cover 'Baby Please Don't Go'... WOW, I think the only version that I've heard of this song that compares is Them's version seven years prior (Budgie = Welsh, Them = Irish... hmm!). It just smokes along... I used to think bassist and lead singer Burke Shelley sounded obnoxious on this tune, but he's grown on me (he really is the Welsh version of Geddy Lee). The rest of the record kind of recycles much of the ideas of the first two records, with mixed-to-positive results. The slow love song 'You Know I'll All Always Love You' is a showcase of Shelley's voice, but the lyrics are a bit banal. Then we get to the first of three semi-epic, mostly instrumental numbers 'You're the Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk'... really guys? This isn't the first (nor would it be last) of goofy song titles. Like so many Budgie songs this number is mostly instrumental, with some vocals, but really it's a showcase for the band to jam, and even has a (overlong) drum solo at the beginning. Definitely has great cut to a bridge about 5 1/2 minutes in, has kind of a 'Halo of Flies' vibe... still this song is not overall that strong. Side two starts off with 'In the Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand' [argh! titles!]... this one is just a bit too repetitive, as without the band's signature bridge becomes a bit of a slog. Maybe the strongest of the long songs is the final tune 'Parents', although the lyrics are so-so. They capture the feeling of wistfulness quite well. I missed 'Riding My Nightmare', the short song shoved in between the two longer songs on side two... it's quite similar to Shelley's 'Love You', slow, acoustic, and reflective... perhaps better, but still not really great. Budgie has definitely lost some of their luster on this record, and unfortunately I'll not get to the next two records which have some excellent songs on them (check out the title track for In For the Kill and 'Breaking All the House Rules on Bandolier... both serious bangers!). After track two you can probably skip the rest of this one. Cool Roger Dean album cover tho!

"The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited", released August 21, 1987, is an EP recorded at A&M and Conway Studios, Los Angeles, and rehearsed in the garage of Lars Ulrich's home in San Francisco.
It was the first album recorded without Cliff and the first with Jason. The tracks included are all covers of songs played by the most-influential bands to the group.
Tracks: Helpless - original by Diamond head
The Small Hours - original by Holocaust
The Wait - original by Killing Joke
Crash Course in Brain Surgery - original by Budgie
Last Caress/Green Hell - original by The Misfits
- the song "The Wait" was not included in the original version of the EP, but appeared in the 2018 remastered version.
- Newsted's bass, in fact, is more audible on this album than on the 1988 album "... And justice for all".
- on the other side of the cover, in the credits, you can read that instead of "Jason Newsted" they wrote "Jason Newkid". lol you guys are so funnyy

“Crash Course in Brain Surgery” by Metallica (Budgie cover)
Look inside and you will see The words are cutting deep inside my brain Thunder burning, quickly burning Knife of words is driving me insane Insane, yeah
The nice thing about posting Metallica covers is that there are plenty of them. And they brought a lot of bands that had a huge impact on the development of heavy metal back into the spotlight like Diamond Head and these guys, Budgie.

They also drastically altered the “Ooh baby, I can rock and roll” breakdown, presumably for being too mellow, or too corny, or something, and yet, the heaviest part of either the original or the cover is the bass bridge right after–which Jason Newsted copied note for note.
As fucking great as the Metallica cover is, and as good as the solo is that Hammett plays but Bourge doesn't, I guess I’ve come to believe that the original is even better, because of that freaky contrast.

Metallica - The Small Hours - The $5.98 E.P. Garage Days Re-Revisited [2/5]
https://www.852-entertainment.com/products/858978005691
TITLE: The $5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited (Remastered) The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited is an extended play by American heavy metal band Metallica. The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited is an extended play by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on August 21, 1987 by Elektra Records. The extended play consisted entirely of covers of late-'70s and early-'80s new wave of British heavy metal bands and hardcore punk music rehearsed in Lars Ulrich's soundproofed garage and then recorded in Los Angeles over the course of six days. It was the group's first recording to feature it's new bassist Jason Newsted, and also the band's first release following the death of second bassist Cliff Burton. They expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions.

Kind of like those "yeah yeah"'s that Metallica excised.
