Tension and the Range of Extension
I recently did some work exploring a property of atmospheric or ambient sounds in film identified by Chion as the range of extension (Chion 1994). Extension refers to the breadth of the offscreen environment represented in the soundtrack, which can range from Vast, as heard in Bladerunner and Rear Window, where all the sounds of their respective cities can be heard, to Null, as used in Red Road where only the close personal foley of the onscreen characters is heard, nothing of surrounding environments.
I was interested in using the range of extension as a means by which to evoke tension in a scene, so I created 3 new soundtracks for a scene in Predator where the soldiers are wading through the jungle, before they encounter the Predator for the first time. Their scout senses possible danger ahead and the squad comes to a halt. There are a few silent moments as the soldiers wait while the scout tries to evaluate the danger, before he dismisses it as "probably nothing" and moves on.
The video below shows the first version, which has a null extension.
In this version I added only the personal foley sounds for the characters seen in the camera frame, including footsteps, brushing through foliage, rustles of clothing and some soft metallic sounds from their weapons. I found this version of the soundtrack was quite effective at evoking tension. The null extension draws the audience close in amongst the characters, and the near silence highlights the scout's strain to see or hear what might be lying in wait ahead of them. However, the scene is perhaps too long to maintain this approach throughout, as the minimal amount of sound could lead to disinterest at points, despite the established tension.
The next video shows a version of the scene with a vast extension.
I took the null version and added several layers of ambience to suggest the wider jungle environment. I began with some library recordings of rainforest ambiences, and built up layers of animal and bird sounds. My intention was to create tension by using the soundtrack to give an oppressive, smothering feel to the jungle, so I added layers of sound that had a more constant, noise-like characteristic such as insect noise, wind and running water.
Again however, I felt that the scene was too long to adopt this approach throughout. Thought it does help give oppressive feeling I was trying to achieve, the constant nature of the background sounds tends to even out the overall dynamics of the soundtrack, thereby diminishing its impact.
The next video shows a version which varies the extension of the soundtrack.
In this version the extension starts vast, establishing the oppressive feeling of the jungle. After the first cut to the predator point-of-view, the extension begins to narrow down to near-null at the peak point of tension in the scene, and is restored to vast at the final cut where the tension is released. I used the cuts to the Predator POV to disguise the removal of ambience layers and drops in the ambience volume. I also made use of points where the audience are focused on foreground sounds, such as footsteps or dialogue to apply subtle fades to further reduce the ambience.
This version is quite effective at both building and releasing tension and maintaining an interesting dynamic over the course of the scene, and gives support to Chion's position that variation in the range of extension within scene can be a useful cinematic tool.

New Sounds For Super Tux Kart
I created a new set of sound effects for the Super Tux Kart, an open source racing game. The game has a set of different characters and karts that you can choose to race, but they all used one of two engine loop sounds. I thought it would make for better gameplay if each kart had its own distinct sound. Also the original sound effects for weapons and power-ups, etc, varied greatly in quality and intelligibility, so I created a new set of sounds that were cleaner and clearer, and made them more percussive so that they are able to stand out more from the engine sound and music, to better provide feedback to the player.
I'll release the sounds under the Creative Commons Sapling Plus 1.0 license and pass the files onto the Super Tux Kart project to do with as they see fit. However, if you would like to try the game with the new sounds, I have created a modified version of the game, based on the v0.6.2 release, that will run on Macintosh computers with Mac OS X 10.6 or higher. Download the modified game below:

A New Sound Design for Battlestar Galactica
I really like this scenes from the final episode of Battlestar Galactica, where the ship makes its last FTL jump and buckles as a result, so I decided to create a new sound design for this scene for a recent Creative Sound Design project. See my previous post for a full description of how the sounds were made.
Note the audio in this video contains a lot of low frequency ‘bass’ sounds, that might not be heard on small computer/laptop speakers - you may need head/ear-phones or larger speakers to hear it all.

A New Sound Design for Battlestar Galactica
I really like the scene from the final episode of Battlestar Galactica, where the ship makes its last FTL jump and buckles as a result, so I decided to create a new sound design for this scene for a recent Creative Sound Design project. The finished design is in the video above. For a full report on how the sounds were created, click the 'read more' link below.
Battlestar Galactica® is a registered trademark and copyright of Universal Entertainment.
DESIGN OVERVIEW
With this project there were two high level aims I wanted to achieve. Firstly, the Battlestar Galactica is a very large ship and the sound design must portray this size. The pitch and reverberance of the sounds of the ship's frame buckling, heard from both the internal and external points of view, are therefore critical.
Secondly, I also wanted to achieve a distinction between the internal and external points of view. Somewhat in keeping with the style of the original production, I felt that using deeper and more reverberant sounds for the outer space scenes would give a sense of the vast emptiness of space. With a more natural frequency range available for the internal scenes, the high pitched sounds of smashed glass, electrical sparks and explosions would provide a dramatic contrast with the exterior.
With this framework in mind, the main elements of the sound design would be the alien atmosphere, the FTL jump, the stresses and groans of the buckling ship from the external point of view, the various impacts an explosions within the ship’s interior and the ship’s main engines.
IMPLEMENTATION
Alien Atmosphere
The environment at the beginning of the scene is an energetic and rocky atmosphere, and I wanted to create a harsh sound that portrayed that energy. Additionally I wanted this sound to be dense and rich to contrast with the silent, empty space that the ship escapes to.
The main component of this sound was created with a recording of cutlery being shaken that was slowed down extremely to give a percussive, low frequency sound. This was then convolved to a sample of thunder, which gave a more rounded and echoing sound. Added to this was the sound of someone eating crisps, slowed to around a tenth normal speed to give the 'crunchy' sound of the small rocks and asteroids colliding in the atmosphere. Finally some regular wind sounds were added to fill out the sound and help give a sense of energy.
FTL Jump
For the FTL jump I wanted to create a powerful sound that portrayed the large amount of energy involved. I also wanted an unnatural, yet clean sound that gave a sense of the impressive futuristic technology driving the jump. Therefore I felt the sound should have two distinct components: the first a clean and ringing tone, giving the impression of the exotic technology involved, the second a lightning crackle type element conveying the 'tearing' of space, and tying to the flashing visuals.
The first component was constructed from the sound of a bow 'twanging' convolved with a chime that had been slowed without changing pitch using granular recombination. This convolution was mixed with a slowed and de-tuned wine glass squeak. These sounds were enveloped to give a sharp snap at the beginning of the jump, then quickly dropping down to a long, quiet, ringing tail.
The cracking component was made by granular-slowing of a reversed lightning sample, mixed with breaking glass and enveloped to give a percussive shape.
However, these components alone did not gave a sense of the weight and force of the jump, so deeply pitch-shifted gunshots were mixed in to give a more powerful sound.
External Sounds
For the external sounds I wanted long, deep resonant groans to accompany the flexing of the ship, giving a sense of the ship’s size, with more percussive elements used for the sudden snaps and buckles of the hull. I also wanted to capture the various puffs of escaping atmosphere. However, as described above, I wanted the external sounds all to fit within the lower frequency range, and to have a soft reverberation to create the impression of viewing from outer space.
The main groaning sounds were created from numerous samples of doors creaking and various wood and metal groans and squeaks. The door and wood sounds were slowed to various speeds around the 10-25% range, with further downwards pitch shifting for some of the higher pitched sounds, to give long, deep, resonant groans. The slowing and pitch shifting created some grainy artifacts, and these were removed with a low pass filter. The sounds were edited to fit with the movements of the ship, and mixed together to give fuller or thinner sounds based on the amount of movement. The metal sounds were pitched down a small amount, to give an impression of greater size, and used for the shorter and faster movements of the ship and to add richness to the deeper groans. Reverb was added to further portray the size of the ship and keep the sounds in fitting the the style of the external segments.
The sounds of the explosions and sudden buckling movements were created from samples of thunder and gunshots. These were slowed and pitched down, low pass filtered and had reverb added to fit with the groans and match the external style.
The atmosphere venting from the ship used white noise and a mix of various compressed gas sounds. As with the other external sounds, these were slowed and low pass filtered before having reverb added, again in keeping with the external style.
Stereo panning was used to match the location of these various external sounds with their visual counterparts, and panning automation allowed the sounds to move with the ships movements.
A 45Hz hum was added at various levels to each external scene to help portray the size and power of the ship.
Finally, a very deep rumbling sound was added as 'space tone' - a background sound for empty space. This can be heard at the beginning of the video when the ship jumps into empty space and at the end when the camera pans away from the ship. This helped retain a natural immersion in the video when there are no sound producing objects on screen.
Internal Sounds
I waned the internal sounds to be more busy and frantic to give the impression of the chaos within the ship as it warps and buckles. Additionally, I wanted to make use of a fuller frequency range, to create a sharp contrast with the style of the external sounds.
Some of the groaning sounds from the external scenes was reused in the background of the internal scenes. In the internal scenes these sounds were pitched higher, and had longer reverberations, giving a sense of the larger movements of the ship and retaining a connection with the external scenes.
For the shattering screens, ten individual glass/window smashing sounds were mixed together to create a very dense sound with strong percussive moments at the beginning of each smash. This dense sound was then pitch shifted to 200% to give a piercing sound that gave the impression of the glass breaking into tiny fragments. The original and pitch shifted versions were mixed together creating a rich final sound. The higher frequency range of this sound helped create the contrast with the style of the external sounds.
Various electrical buzzing and cracking sounds were used for the sparks and electrical fires. These were pitched up and had a long reverb applied to give them a softer and more continuous sound. At points were there were explosions of sparks these sounds were mixed together to give a denser sound, to which an envelop was applied giving them a percussive shape. Added to this were electrical snaps and cracking sounds, from lightning and welding samples that were pitched to fit below the frequency range of the crackles. For moments where particularly fast or dense sets of sparks are seen, some granular randomization was used the increase the harshness of the sounds. Finally, some of the external explosion sounds were reused to fill out the bottom end of the frequency range. Again, the fuller range of these sounds helped with the contrast to the external sounds.
The FTL computer sound was created with a pulsing sine wave, with granular randomization of speed, pitch and grain location used when the computer screen glitches.
Additional debris, impact and rumbling sounds were added to fill out the scenes. Panning was used to locate the various internal sounds with their visual counterparts.
Engine Sounds
I felt that the engine sounds in particular were vital to portraying the size of the ship. I wanted to give a sense of energy of the engines themselves, contained within the ship, and the power of the thrusters on the exterior.
For the engine sound, I convolved two electrical humming sounds to create a deep, rich tone. This was then convolved with the sound of a large aircraft engine, giving a sense of life and movement to the sound.
For the thrusters I wanted to achieve something akin to the sound of a NASA rocket blasting off. I took a sample of a gas furnace, slowed it slightly, pitched it down and then passed it through a low pass filter. This gave a deep rocket thruster type sound, but it didn't fully match the visuals, which have a crackling blue light that gives the impression of electricity. I then mixed in the sound of electrical crackling that was slowed, pitched down and smoothed out some with reverb. This gave the thrusters a fuller, more believable sound, while still fitting with the overall style for external sounds.

Granular Audio
This was a sound design task to create a soundtrack for the video using only granular synthesis/recombination techniques. All the sounds in this video were created by manipulating a sample of HAL 9000 from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The original sample is tacked on to the end of the video.
Note the audio in this video contains a lot of low frequency ‘bass’ sounds, that might not be heard on small computer/laptop speakers - you may need head/ear-phones or larger speakers to hear it all.
