Matthew Olmos is a musician, sound artist, audio/mastering engineer, and Nahuatl language learner and instructor. David Marcelino Cayetano is a teacher of the Nahuatl language and culture, poet, musician, muralist, filmmaker, medicine guardian and defender of the First Nations and has been active since 2015. Cuitlahuac Arreola Martinez is a Nahuatl language learner and teacher and Indigenous language activitist that has been active since 2016. From Martinez's language work at Marsh Park, Eastside Café and LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles, CA from 2016 through 2018, he founded Speaknahuatl.com in 2018 as an online space for people of other places to come learn the language and be in community.

Matthew Olmos  es músico, artista de sonido, ingeniero de audio/masterización y aprendiz e instructor del idioma náhuatl. David Marcelino Cayetano es profesor de la lengua y cultura náhuatl, poeta, músico, muralista, cineasta, guardián de la medicina y defensor de las Primeras Naciones y ha estado activo desde 2015. Cuitlahuac Arreola Martinez es aprendiz y docente de lengua náhuatl y activista de las lenguas indígenas que ha estado activo desde 2016. A partir del trabajo lingüístico de Martínez en Marsh Park, Eastside Café y LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles, California de 2016 a 2018, fundó Speaknahuatl.com en 2018 como un espacio en línea para que personas de otros lugares vengan a aprender el idioma y estar estar en comunidad.

Olmos first met Martinez in 2017 at Eastside Café, a community space where Martinez and other members of the Tlahtoltapazolli collective taught Nahuatl language and culture every Sunday. Olmos returned to classes online in 2020 and eventually became an instructor.

Olmos conoció a Martínez por primera vez en el 2017 en Eastside Café, un espacio comunitario donde Martínez y otros miembros del colectivo Tlahtoltapazolli enseñaban lengua y cultura náhuatl todos los domingos. Olmos regresó a clases en línea en el 2020 y finalmente se convirtió en instructor.

Martinez first crossed paths with Cayetano on Instagram Live in 2021 when Cuitlahuac was giving a free lesson. From there, they connected online via video calls and formed a bond that turned into companionship and collaboration that revolved around teaching the language, culture and cosmovision with a focus on Indigenous rights from a decolonial lense.

Martínez conoció por primera vez a Cayetano en Instagram en vivo en el 2021, cuando Cuitláhuac estaba dando una lección gratuita. A partir desde ese momento, se conectaron en línea a través de videollamadas y formaron un vínculo que se convirtió en compañerismo y colaboración que giró en torno a la enseñanza del idioma, la cultura y la cosmovisión con un enfoque en los derechos indígenas desde una lente decolonial.

In Spring 2021, Cayetano's and Martinez's first project was an online movie screening of "Tsontiajakatl / El último viento" from Cayetano's Bironga Films. This lead to Cayetano joining as a teacher and has been teaching with the collective ever since. Together with Olmos, they are a community-oriented Nahuatl language and culture collective dedicated to educating individuals of all age groups. They continually integrate effective language teaching methods, with dedicated teachers, students and their commitment to their online and in-person community via Indigenous language revitalization, reclamation, preservation, activism, arts, and cultures across Abya Yala (North, Central & South Americas).

En la primavera del 2021, el primer proyecto de Cayetano y Martínez fue la proyección en línea de la película  "Tsontiajakatl / El último viento" de Bironga Films de Cayetano. Esto llevó a Cayetano a incorporarse como docente y desde entonces ha estado enseñando con el colectivo. Junto con Olmos, son un colectivo de lengua y cultura náhuatl orientado a la comunidad y dedicado a educar a personas de todas las edades. Integran continuamente métodos efectivos de enseñanza de idiomas, con maestros y estudiantes dedicados y su compromiso con su comunidad en línea y en persona a través de la revitalización, recuperación, preservación, activismo, artes y culturas de las lenguas indígenas en Abya Yala (Norteamérica, Centroamérica y Sudamérica).  

With a strong commitment to Indigenous language advocacy and activism, their work is structured around the four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Their core objective revolves around empowering their community via language, culture and the arts. They achieve this by facilitating Nahuatl language and culture classes, film screenings, workshops and speaking engagements at colleges, universities, museums, community spaces and theater companies. 

Con un fuerte compromiso por la defensa y el activismo de las lenguas indígenas, sus trabajos se estructuran en torno a las cuatro estaciones: invierno, primavera, verano y otoño. Sus objetivos principales giran en torno a empoderar a su comunidad a través del idioma, la cultura y las artes.  Logran esto facilitando clases de lengua y cultura náhuatl, proyecciones de películas, talleres y charlas en colegios, universidades, museos, espacios comunitarios y compañías de teatro.

These community engagements can be enjoyed both in-person and online to ensure accessibility for all. They also offer translation services that seamlessly bridges the gap between Spanish, English and Nahuatl. Their multifaceted approach embodies a profound commitment to preserving, highlighting and sharing the beauty of Indigenous languages, cultures and arts. Cuitlahuac Arreola Martinez is a Nahuatl Language Learner & Teacher. They teach people of all ages from preschoolers to elders. As a 3rd language learner their role is to teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes of modern Nahuatl variants with an emphasis on Huasteca dialects from Veracruz, Hidalgo, & San Luis Potosi. Classical Nahuatl or ancient Nahuatl or colonial Nahuatl is also taught but the main focus is to speak in our original languages that is why they are also an Indigenous Language Promoter & Activist. They want to empower our community via language, a passion that they have had their whole life. They want to encourage everyone to speak their native language as a way of decolonizing, as a way to heal. They have been teaching virtually since 2018 and presently via Zoom. Pre-pandemic, they taught at LA Plaza de Culturas y Artes, Semillitas Preschool, Pasadena City College and other schools in so-called Southern California.

Huitzilyolotl Anahuac:

Huitzilyolotl is from Orange County, California. He’s a third-generation Chicano with roots in Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Coahuila and of Zacateco, Guachichile, and Nahua descent. He has a Master’s degree in Chicano Studies. He has been working in education for 18 years and currently working on his special education credentials to continue working with students with emotional disturbance. Huitzilyolotl is also a third-generation massage therapist and is continuing his family legacy of healing. Huitzilyolotl is also an Indigenous activist and poet.

Kurly Tlapoyawa:

Kurly Tlapoyawa is an archaeologist, ethnohistorian, cultural consultant, and filmmaker. His research covers Mesoamerica, the American Southwest, and the historical connections between the two regions. He is the author of numerous books and has presented lectures at Harvard University, The University of New Mexico, Yale University, San Diego State University, and numerous others. He most recently worked as a cultural consultant for an upcoming film from Nickelodeon Animation Studios.

Kurly is the co-host of the podcast “Tales From Aztlantis, which deals with Chicano identity, Mesoamerican pseudo history, and archaeological misconceptions.

Chris Cuauhtli:

Chris Cuauhtli is an Indigenous Nahua Tamazulteco from Tamazula Jalisco Mexico. He was born in Soyatlan, outside of Tamazula Jalisco and raised in Sacramento California. He is a Professional tattoo artist and Indigenous Language advocate currently working on the revitalization of the Nahuatl variant of southern Jalisco. He has been involved in Danza Azteca Chichimeca and Indigenous ceremonies in the US and Mexico for over 25 years. Citlalli Anahuac:

Anahuac is a historian, poet, activist. For the past 26 years she has been studying decolonial Mexican history as a detribalized Mexicana and has dedicated her activism, poetry, and research to understanding and sharing that history. She is a fourth generation removed from a Nahua speaking community of El Grullo Jalisco. She uses social media to share critical research on decolonial history of México. Her publications include Obsidian Blades: Decolonizing Poetry for Indigenous People of Occupied America (2013) and Don’t Call Me Latina: Notes from a decolonizing Mexican reclaiming everything that is ours (2022) She launched E-Decolonize in 2020 and since then has dedicated her time to teaching free and private courses that focus on providing accessible education for all ages and a priority to teaching the BIPOC community. What topic(s) do you want us to cover? We can do the following: Introduction to Nahuatl, Indigenous Peoples' Day with an emphasis on Indigenous Resistance and Day of the Dead. The last 2 also have an Intro to Nahuatl part.

When? What are the dates and times? We prefer a 2-month notice. Events cannot be on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays until mid-June 2023.

COURSE DESCRIPTION Modern Nahuatl with emphasis on Nahuatl variants from the Huasteca Veracruzana, Huasteca Hidalguense, and Huasteca Potosina. Language acquisition with practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Materials used are via Google Slides, Docs, Excel, PDFs, online dictionaries, Soundcloud audios/songs, stories, videos, books, and movies with English and/or Spanish subtitles. We are unable to guarantee all movies will have English subtitles. Corresponds to 1 semester of Nahuatl studies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES A basic level for the complete beginner to be able to communicate effectively using research-based teaching methodologies such as the WAYK (Where Are Your Keys?) language revitalization system, TPR (Total Physical Response), and ASLA (Accelerated Second Language Acquisition). Introduction to Nahua customs and culture. Introduction to Nahua customs and culture. Introduction to Uto-Aztecan Language Family and other Mesoamerican languages.
