Note
The Colony by Sally Denton was my first exposure to the LeBarons and I HIGHLY recommend it.
(Also recommend Broken Faith by Mitch Weiss which is about Jane Whaley and her cult, the Word of Faith Fellowship, in the same vein of 'hard to read, hard to put down')
y'all keep recommending Mormon books and i just immediately go to amazon like "say no more" and order them lol i have 3 on the way officially incl this one. i'm making my way through a book about Emma Smith right now and after i finish that one i'm just gonna keep the Mormon history train going baby
thank you for the recs!!

review:
i really wanted to enjoy this because i love books that feature a creepy cult! sadly, it turned out to be so much less than what i expected :( without getting into too many spoilers, i just feel like the book gets much worse in the second half. we see a shift in maeve's (the mc) character that happens so suddenly that it gives you a whiplash. there are instances of info-dumping, of characters (specifically maeve) being annoying. some plotlines are just forgotten (emily, henry). the main "incident", the entire reason maeve feels so guilty and so indebted to andrea, just feels anticlimactic :( the end tries to be a plot twist but it just feels like a ripoff of rosemary's baby. in conclusion, the build-up to the halfway point is so much better than the later half of the book.
rating: 2.5 stars

Ballard/Colquhoun/Gray (Books acquired, 28 April 2023)
After an early spring purge n’ clean, I took a few boxes of books to my local used bookstore. I had intended to browse just a bit and not pick up anything (apart from a few Jeff VanderMeer novels my son had asked for), but I wound up getting three books: a pristine first U.S. edition of J.G. Ballard’s The Unlimited Dream Company, Alasdair Gray’s Unlikely Stories, Mostly, and surrealist artist…

Bunny
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Samantha Heather Mackey is an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England’s Warren University. She prefers the company of her dark imagination and is disgusted by the rest of her fictional writing cohort — a clique of girls who all call each other ‘Bunny’ and who seem to share a hive mind. Everything changes when the Bunnies invite Samantha to their ‘Smut Salon’ and she falls deeper and deeper into their wicked world and partaking in their ‘Workshop’ where they conjure monstrous creations. Reality begins to blur for Samantha and everything comes to a deadly conclusion.
I was interested but I wasn’t invested in this story until the last like 40%. I was confused by the Bunnies, Samantha, Ava, everything tbh. And even though Max was a confusing character that’s when I was finally eating the story up. I think this would’ve been better as a physical read, as I got a confused and lost while listening to the audiobook but I still liked it. In fact, once I finished the audiobook and everything clicked and made sense I realized I really loved the story.

Follow The Leader - A Review
Tumblr media
The dice rolls and sometimes you get lucky. I feel like the dice have been rolling my way recently for a change. This is making life a little hectic but I am not going to complain. With this some of my more creative exploits are having to take a step back as I cannot give them the dedication needed to ensure the best version of it is seen.
That being said I will always find time to do my rambling reviews and I am back now to review the debut Novel of J.J. Maguire, Follow The Leader.
Follow The Leader tells the story of Lilith, a dedicated nurse and Mother who is caught up in the whirlwind of living in a fast paced society. Unbeknownst to her a cult have been preying on her young family, waiting for the moment to strike and take away the most important thing in her life, her Daughter Sam.
Follow The Leader is a short novel, coming in around 80 pages however this is not to its detriment. It’s punchy visceral onslaught ensures you are gripped from page one with the whole book being a first person journey into Lilith’s worst nightmare.
Primal fear is the novel’s biggest strength. The themes of home invasion and kidnapping are real everyday fears for the majority of people and Maguire taps into this successful with terrifying set pieces and realistic interactions all through the eyes of a working class protagonist.
Aspects of the novel reminded me of Paul Tremblay’s Cabin at the End of The World and Disappearance at Devil’s Rock which are both must reads for horror fans.
My only criticism would be that I would have liked an expansion on the side characters whether it would be through more dialogue or a switch of focus from Lilith to one of the members of the cult. I feel this could have created more mystery in the actions of the cult.
Follow The Leader is set to be released on March 15th on Amazon.

I finished the Doctrine Book-bag for my Lamb cosplay! I think jt turned out pretty well, I used black foam clay for the edges and was going to carve them when dried, but I actaully?? Really like the goopy unclean look so I might keep it
I might still carve it idk, and maybe replace the strap with a chain for the whole theme
I know the Doctrine is a book in game and usually as a prop but I need something to hold my phone and wallet in easy access for when we scour the artist alley, so this idea came to be. Now it can hold my stuff AND it's in character!
I also recycled a cardboard box to put my cosplay in, made it look COTL specific:

On Vladimir Sorokin’s Blue Lard, pp. 162-87 (indigo pill, fecal culture, piss blood, ice cone)
Previously on Blue Lard… pp. 1-47 pp. 48-110 pp. 111-61 We left off right before the gross abject center of Vladimir Sorokin’s novel Blue Lard (in gross abject translation by Max Lawton). The midpoint is a strange short story, “The Indigo Pill” (by one Nikolai Buryak, author of The Flood). “The Indigo Pill” is the textual tissue between Blue Lard’s warped lobes, a segue that marries opera and…

The Project
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️
Lo Denham is alone. Her parents died in a tragic car accident, that nearly took her own life, and her sister has joined the religious community The Unity Project. Lo is desperate to get her sister back, so she spends six years trying to reach her in the project but is only met with shut doors and unanswered calls by the project members. Lo believes she is finally being given access to her sister and while doing research into The Project and it’s leader, Lo discovers a lot about her sister, and realizes her own life may be in danger.
I couldn’t put this book down. I didn’t have a lot of reading time this past week but when I could I was deep into this book. It’s the first book I tabbed, and I didn’t really have a system but I just put a tab everywhere I felt something interesting or important was said. I was rooting for Bea and Lo and while the ending was my desired outcome, I felt like it didn’t make sense. There’s no explanation to some events that unfolded and I feel like I’m left with more questions than answers honestly. Which is why this book is four stars instead of five for me. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy or are interested in cults, thrillers, mystery, sisterhood, and crying.
