Compared to robots, human bodies are flexible, capable of fine movements, and can convert energy efficiently into movement. Drawing inspiration from human gait, researchers from Japan crafted a two-legged biohybrid robot by combining muscle tissues and artificial materials. Publishing on January 26 in the journal Matter, this method allows the robot to walk and pivot."
Research on biohybrid robots, which are a fusion of biology and mechanics, is recently attracting attention as a new field of robotics featuring biological function," says corresponding author Shoji Takeuchi of the University of Tokyo, Japan
"Using muscle as actuators allows us to build a compact robot and achieve efficient, silent movements with a soft touch."The research team's two-legged robot, an innovative bipedal design, builds on the legacy of biohybrid robots that take advantage of muscles.
Muscle tissues have driven biohybrid robots to crawl and swim straight forward and make turns -- but not sharp ones.
Yet, being able to pivot and make sharp turns is an essential feature for robots to avoid obstacles.
To build a nimbler robot with fine and delicate movements, the researchers designed a biohybrid robot that mimics human gait and operates in water.
The robot has a foam buoy top and weighted legs to help it stand straight underwater.
The skeleton of the robot is mainly made from silicone rubber that can bend and flex to conform to muscle movements.
The researchers then attached strips of lab-grown skeletal muscle tissues to the silicone rubber and each leg.
When the researchers zapped the muscle tissue with electricity, the muscle contracted, lifting the leg up. The heel of the leg then landed forward when the electricity dissipated.
By alternating the electric stimulation between the left and right leg every 5 seconds, the biohybrid robot successfully "walked" at the speed of 5.4 mm/min (0.002 mph). To turn, researchers repeatedly zapped the right leg every 5 seconds while the left leg served as an anchor.
The robot made a 90-degree left turn in 62 seconds. The findings showed that the muscle-driven bipedal robot can walk, stop, and make fine-tuned turning motions.
"Currently, we are manually moving a pair of electrodes to apply an electric field individually to the legs, which takes time," says Takeuchi.
"In the future, by integrating the electrodes into the robot, we expect to increase the speed more efficiently."

This AU is (unfortunately) still in early development while I'm busy with school but there's some basic lore bits.
Half-monsters (hanmon) are a third group of organism between humans and pokemon. They are the result of ancient species from both groups combining and evolving over millenia to become specialized species of their own. They have monstrous appearances akin to pokemon, but wield only physical abilities like humans. Due to the nature of how they were formed and how they are viewed, most live in hiding, with only a few thousand individuals being observed and recorded
White Mountain Snakes are native to the Sin-Joh regions, showing up in traditional manuscripts as messengers of regional deities to guide and bring good luck to humans. Ingo and Emmet are children in a family that moved from Sinnoh to Unova. As such they consider themselves part of three cultures, and speak three languages
The twins are one of the only well known examples of hanmon in the present day. Most people are divided on their feelings about half-monsters, so they try very hard to skew the perception in a more positive direction. They act very proper with others and in public, only letting up and relaxing at home
Ingo does end up falling through the rift to Hisui. His main concern is that he fell right as the different clans were fighting over who was right, and having a "divine messenger" appear in Pearl Clan territory has caused a whole new mess for Ingo and the clanspeople
As for the serpents themselves:
The twins are constrictors, lacking fangs and instead having insanely muscular lower halves for wrapping and crushing prey in their grip. Depending on the size of the food they're eating, they might also just crush it with their bare hands to make it more manageable to swallow quickly
They are looooong, something like 10m in length from head to tail. The subway has multiple posters up warning patrons to watch their step in case they trip over them in traffic
They are awfully sensitive to temperature change. They sleep under a giant electric blanket, wear thick uniforms, and set the driving car temperature to be warm. Summer is their best working season, however they tend to stop working in winter to hibernate for about 4 months, much to the dismay of Battle Subway fans, staff, and local grocers
They'll shed about thrice a year and assist each other with peeling it when possible. This is mostly since they aren't dexterous enough to reach parts of their back. Shedding time means it's time for this little competition of theirs where they attempt to pull the longest pieces of shed possible off the other. Ingo is not very good at dealing with Emmet's dry ass and ends up accidentally cracking it most of the time. They sometimes give the scrap shed to Elesa for use in fashion outfits
Ingo's mouth is much narrower than Emmet's, he often has to stretch his jaws to accommodate something Emmet can eat easily. As a result the tissue connecting his jaws in the front is more stretchy
The twins have different organ locations due to their long structure. This usually doesn't affect their job but if you give them a hug you will feel the heart pumping in their abdomen

If you're a top-tier athlete, you got there by having
Yes a good work ethic and a whole ton of skill earned by very hard work. Good job. Bravo. Whatever.
The cultural and economic advantage of a ton of excellent training, coaching, and opportunities. There are many athletes as talented and hardworking as you who couldn't afford to make it to that competition you won. Maybe they needed to look after their siblings or work a job or do their schoolwork. There are a ton of athletes who could have beaten you but they didn't have a gym to train at or a coach to help them or a team to join. Or those things existed and they quite simply couldn't afford them.
Unearned physical and genetic advantages over all the other girls your age who were shorter, or didn't build muscle as easily, or didn't get adequate nutrition when you did, or didn't get enough adult attention to build muscular coordination at the right age as you, or who had accidents or injuries or diseases or disabilities, or who were naturally fat and had to spend their whole lives worrying more about their weight than their physical abilities because fatphobia
I had to understand this the hard way from the other side. I wanted to be an athlete when I was a child, and I never understood that the bones of my right leg were just too short and too badly-built, so I would never be as tall or able to run as fast as everyone else—that actually, all my effort counted for piss because of the shape of my skeleton.
In fact, the harder I worked, the more I damaged the soft tissues all over my badly-built joints, so trying to put in 110% effort (and hiding the massive amount of pain I was in, because "no pain no gain") exacerbated what would already be lifelong disabilities.
Trans girls AREN'T your enemies. They're your competitors.
Some of them are naturally smaller or weaker or disabled, because testosterone isn't actually a superdrug.
Some of them are actually physically the same as you, because that's what puberty blockers and hormone therapy at the right age DO. Trans girls often want to be girls, and will therefore seek out medical solutions to avoid masculine puberty! Mindblowing but true!!!
And some of them are for whatever reason taller or stronger or faster than you and if this is the first time you've ever encountered competition like that then
NEWSFLASH:
Before this you have always been the competition who was inherently taller or stronger or faster than everybody else
In which case you're not actually an opponent of natural physical advantages in sport, you're just being a transphobic pissbaby because you can't win by default this time.

Sight/Light/Dark/Eyes
This and touch are probably what I’ve talked about the most
Maedhros suffers damage to one eye during his captivity from a venom. The damage to his vision mostly heals though the scar remains and he has some lingering headaches and occasional issues with depth perception
More troubling for him and others is the photosensitivity he experiences for awhile after his rescue. Maedhros seems repulsed, pained by the light. It makes sense of course. In Angband, he’s kept in darkness, dim chambers, clouded heights, often pitch black cells where the only light is from distant torches for so long not to mention the light he’s exposed to after his rescue is completely unfamiliar to him.
Maedhros strongly dislikes the Sun, shies away from it, has an almost visceral reaction to the curtains being opened (as seen in the wonderful illustration @ekalita-blr did for me ☀️☀️☀️☀️)
This of course adds to the speculation and rumors around him. Even from those who are aware of the physical reasons for his reaction, who understand the consequences of going from a dark, dim environment to open daylight, can be caught up in the unfortunate political and cultural implications of shying away from the light.
Even in the years after when the more physical affects have lessened, Maedhros never fully becomes used to sunlight and the stories of the Noldorin king then prince who longed for the dark he was rescued from never quite leave him either
His eyes unsurprisingly become more attuned to the darkness and he becomes well adept at navigating without sight.
We can also go into other potential modifications.
Hearing/Quiet/Balance/Vestibular
Maedhros’s physical ability to hear is largely unaffected but a lot of his hyper vigilance manifests in increased sensitivity to sound, awareness and detection of noise and dislike of loud noises. Conversely, he is also often unsettled by quiet.
Maedhros does suffer ringing headaches and some difficulties with balance in the first few years after his rescue. This in in part due to damage to his vestibular system as well as muscular damage that affects aspects of mobility in general.
Smell and taste
Like hearing, it’s largely unaffected physically but there are a number of olfactory triggers caused by Angband and many elicit a very physical reaction including gagging or even retching
Touch
Definitely the area I’ve talked about most. I’ve largely focused on the psychological aspects in other posts though so here’s more physical.
Maedhros suffers extensive muscular, nerve and tissue damage in Angband that affects his sensations. His legs have large areas around his thighs and calves for example that have all but lost sensation though occasionally get pins and needles or stinging sensations.
Two fingertips on his left hand have also lost sensation.
The psychological aspects I’ve gone into before but I’m always happy to talk more if anyone wants to ask 🍃
This is from a variety of forms of abuse and neglect including deliberate damage and extended enforced immobility

Proprioception
This one is rather complicated because I personally have neurological issues that affect my proprioception so it’s very hard for me to describe in others.
I think that it is heavily damaged for Maedhros though in both physical and psychological ways. Extreme dissociation can manifest as difficulties with proprioception and I think this comes up a lot. Related to balance/vestibular as well, Maedhros has waves of vertigo that often come with severe lack of orientation

Scars: God, where to start? Pre-disfigurement, he has some scars on his body from being abused as a child, and a small scar from a bullet wound on his right forearm. Post-disfigurement, he has severe burn scarring on the left side of his face. The scar tissue is dark pink and shiny. His left eye is blind and clouded over. Harvey also has extensive scars all over his body, and words carved into his skin- some self-inflicted, some not. As well as whipping scars on his back and self-inflicted stigmata. At some point after regaining his sanity, Harvey has most of the scars on his body surgically removed. Fashion

Details: Harvey always dresses formally, even in more casual settings. He does own two pairs of jeans, but they’re just collecting dust in his closet.
