Def guilty of reading it with one sided undertones lmfao Czcibor’s whole tragedy really gets me, but also his capital-O-Obsession with Mlynar. I love grown men and their weird little relationships

Even outside of shipping really makes me think of a -not really so- better world where he might’ve gone a similar route to Toland and Mlynar and went “this place just isn’t worth trying to save” and joined up with Toland/Rhodes

Cue the Nearl girls’ reactions of “oh god there’s two of them” *points to Czcibor and Toland following around Mlynar like he’s some kind of mental enrichment stuck in their zoo cage*

while not authorially intended i think czcibor having a one-sided weird little Thing for mlynar is a really fun idea and an excellent space to play in. clearly he has a lot of emotions about the guy. and there's something to the idea that mlynar is the reason he's still alive and mlynar is the reason he finally dies. i think he and toland both have feelings like crazy about mlynar but they're doing it in completely different ways and mlynar is like. please. im just some fucking guy. but he isn't.

to be clear, while i think it would have been one sided, i don't think mlynar didn't care about czcibor at all, just that like. 1. he met toland first 2. he's got a relatively low self-esteem, so, he's dense too. i think he wouldn't have tried so much to spare czcibor's life at the end of obscure wanderer if he didn't want czcibor to be saveable. it's unfortunately, his friend who didn't want to be saved in the first place. there's a reason that i think that his skill use 4 line is primarily about his emotions about killing czcibor. though i think in a lighter universe he joined toland instead of remaining a campaign knight and the two of them are zoo tigers and mlynar is the pumpkin full of meat in their enclosure. it's hard to have any sort of emotionally important relationship with him that doesn't involve mutual antagonism, lmao.

obscure wanderer really maybe one of the saddest events though. i dunno getting a letter from your old friend begging you to save one of your other old friends from being unfairly executed and just putting the letter back into the envelope but never being able to throw it away just leaving it unanswered. because that was the time they crushed your own hope under their heel. and then years later you go to "mercy" kill that friend who sent that letter who says your light is the only light of the nearls/knighthood he's ever known and it was your very sense of justice and the fact that you ever showed someone it was possible to care and still win that lead to him not being able to let it go even though you've long tried to abandon that part of you after they broke apart your household for it. but also you can't but also you kill him anyways

thinking about cosmo and how tightly and tenderly he holds onto his own name. how irritated he gets when he sees it on any legal documentation or directories, or when he has to see someone’s face as they (try) to read it and inevitably go with “mr. stilinski”. how the only people who would know it and use it would be his family, scott and melissa. thinking about how personal cosmo takes his name, how seen he feels when someone uses it, how invasive it is and how that’s sometimes a good thing and sometimes a bad thing depending on who’s using it.

So the Tenebrous Knight actually got namedropped in MN:

After OW's CN release I figured that must be Mlynar because they love the thesaurus at Hypgergryph.

What I didn't figure is that he got the moniker by annihilating an entire Kazimierzian noble house - House Paleniskos - and their Leithanien conspirators.

He wasn't actually knighted for it, hence Czcibor saying knight in quotes. Apparently one of the reasons why he refused is because the company he kept consisted of refugees and outlaws like Toland. The actual knights were against them gaining any sort of legitimacy and he wanted to protect them from the heat.

Anyway, one thing that I found really fascinating in Czcibor's story is that the knights looked down on him and didn't want him to advance, not because he was a survivor of the traitorous Paleniskos, nor because he didn't have the strength to stand up to them himself and had to ask for outside help, but because he should've died with them.

And at the end he's become a traitor to Kazimierz himself, is trying to instigate a plot involving Leithanien and killed by Mlynar's hand. The same person who killed his house for that exact reason while he begged him to spare at least some. It all came back together in the end. What incredible irony.

Also apparently Mlynar Nearl is racist against German goats.

The Arknights Character songs are remarkably great for selling the characters.

I didn't really like Mlynar as a character, the droll disdain for the optimism of Maria and Margret's values coming from when he failed to live up to his own ideals doesn't sit right with me and I disliked him even if I got where he was coming from and listening to Ensheath after going through all the vignettes making up An Obscure Wanderer, it kinda just fits together.

The song also struck me with just the title, just made me think of a line in the early Wheel of Time books, which were my biggest fixation for a good decade and that also helped me piece together some affection for the old workhorse.

So as a quick summary for people who haven't read it, two of the main characters Lan, a hardened veteran turned bodyguard, and Rand, newly minted hero, are training on top of a tower and Lan talks about how the final act for something you truly believe in is 'sheathing the sword', taking a fatal blow to strike your own to finish the job, you will die but what your doing it for will be achieved.

I think this concept kinda contrasts Mlynar and Czcibor, Czcibor still belives that his justice can be achieved through a show of strength and he can find that fight that he can give himself to for 'Justice', whereas Mlynar saw that his justice will never be achieved because his fight isn't just against flesh and blood, it's against the whole institution that surrounded him. and he gave up the fight until I guess he saw people holding similar ideals who haven't given up, so he found some way of moving on from that.

The rest of the song truly is written for him, and there isn't much to be said about that banger.

Wish I rolled the old workhonse, I enjoyed the story.

I wasn't sure how much I'd enjoy Mlynar's event story bc i personally am not super into the Kazimierz storyline and I don't rly care for Mlynar as a character but I rly rly enjoyed the scenes between Mlynar and Czcibor. The first one in particular in the second to last story node, something about it just rly struck me, there was so much subtle emotion in there between these two old friends, idk the history and emotion between them felt very real to me and the scenes had a surprising amount of life to them

While horse Poland doesn't feel very Polish in Arknights, I gotta say, when I was reading Czcibor's speech about how this country needs to wake up, I was heavily reminded of Polish romantic literature. He did sound like all the protagonists of famous dramas about people fighting for the country, huh!

Sidenote, but most Polish Kazimierz ever felt to me was when Radiant was performed during Ambience Synesthesia 2022 and it showed an art of Nearl standing against the background of a city. That city did feel like Poland!

hi lydia isaac! first of all ty for all your hard work. was going through your names catalogue and it's a lot of help, but i have some issues. sorry if that's just white person whining, but most of names listed as polish are not really polish, like some are messed version of polish names, i wonder if you or your sources decided not to be nitpicky? i guess it bothers me bcos names like wojciech and czcibor have a clear meaning. sorry if im looking into it too much and you don't want corrections

cont. i guess i was just wondering if names taken from other languages were similarly changed, i only speak polish and english, so can't check that. also one other thing, as much as i'd love dagna to be of polish origin, i never encountered this name here, and google says it's scandinavian? maybe someone mixed it up with bogna or dagmara, but i think an actual scandinavian person should confirm if the name is theirs. sorry if i seem only to complain, i really appreciate all the work you're doing

the only comparison I can make is your bestie calling you up and you’re making normal conversation for however long before they admit they’re in jail for murder and need a lawyer ☠️

possibly the most important thing about kazimiera is that atanasija isn't the only one who thinks she's delusional and bizarre, her peers ALSO thinks she's a few screws short. czcibor looking at her like '??? why are you acting like you're in a RELATIONSHIP with your stolen bride. you're giving her PRESENTS. she's a thing you own this is not how war brides work.' and kazimiera blissfully picking out outfits for her bride and atanasija long since worn down into apathy. even atanasija can tell this isn't the normal way to do things, but the normal way is worse, so. this might as well happen??

and kazimiera lives so in her own world that she doesn't notice other gods concluding that she's a liability until it's far too late to do anything about it, because czcibor is stronger than she is
