watching dragon ball alone in my bedroom on an old, small, and dusty tv at 5 in the afternoon is without exaggeration the first memories i have of my life. so clear, yet so distant.

i remember doodling dragon ball characters almost every day in primary school. and even when i didn't draw them specifically, you could tell that "art" for me looked like toriyama's style. those drawings were my first exposure to the that world, and that was my starting point for anything i've ever drawn.

funny story: the hardest i've ever cried as a kid (and kind of in general), was watching the final minutes of the final episode of dragon ball GT, where the intro song "dan dan kokoro hikareteku" plays over a montage of all of dragon ball from beginning to end. i had been following goku since he was a kid in OG dragon ball almost daily since i could remember. kid me couldn't take the idea of him being gone forever. he was my best friend.

i watched that episode on the day of my BIRTHDAY, like 2 hours before i had to go to my party at an arcade restaurant we invited my friends to. i was A MESS. just sitting in our car sobbing uncontrollably while my mom didn't know what the fuck was wrong with me as i couldn't speak. must have been like 8-9 years old, maybe?

last year i thought to myself "why don't i have that song on my playlist?" and decided to look up this ending again out of curiosity. i was once again reduced an absolute wreck as a 27 year old adult in 2 minutes. i couldn't believe how primal these emotions of mine were, as i hadn't watched or cared much about this show in forever, but i suppose it is impossible to completely remove something that was once so core to your life, regardless of how much time has passed lmao. so here i am, tearing up once again.

i know i'm just rambling here, but seeing so many people on social media talk about their experiences with anything that toriyama-san had created really made me start reminiscing on my own experiences with dragon ball and how much it meant to me.

the reach he had on the entire planet cannot be overstated. through comic books, anime, videogames... be it dragon ball, dragon quest, chrono trigger, dr. slump, sand land, etc. and that is without even considering the unquantifiable amount of art that was inspired directly by his work, and the people that were then inspired in turn.

he's touched so many lives of all ages across time. and will continue to do so, as is the nature of art itself.

watching my favorite show. collecting cards with my favorite characters on them. frequenting my favorite AMVs of my favorite moments. playing my favorite videogames with my friends after school... the list goes on.

thank you for all the memories.

thank you, akira toriyama. rest in peace.

I wanted to commemorate the passing of Akira Toriyama with a drawing for him. He has left a series that has changed my life forever 🙏🏾. He will be missed by many around the world, including me, I remember when I was a kid and would watch countless DBZ Kai episodes and many DBZ clips on YouTube because I just fell in love with dragon ball that much. I’m going to miss him, because just like a parent who raised you, he raised us all into his fictional world that influenced us all to be better. The reason why Goku is so special his because of his positive and determined nature to appreciate those around him and to strive to be better than himself, teaching all of us to do the same in our lives as well. Thank you so much Toriyama💖, for you shaped a large portion my childhood in this world and I will forever thank you for making me a better person🔥

A bit late on here, but rest in peace to someone who didn’t just influence my life, but millions of others - Rest In Peace, Akira Toriyama.

I owe so much to this man for his creativity, the worlds he built, and the outlook he held throughout it all. He influenced my childhood in so many ways, from meeting my best friend, to inspiring my own art, writing, and creative world view. Delving into his world has brought me so much happiness, and I’m sure that’s the same for many out there. I felt very saddened to hear the news of his passing, but as we know from Dragonball, death is never the end. He’ll live on forever.

And I’m sure he’s ran through snake way, and is training for his next return with King Kai. Words to live by: Work hard, study well, and eat and sleep plenty! That’s the Turtle Hermit way!

Quassù sono in ritardo lo so, ma su IG ho fatto il post istantaneamente appena saputo la notizia. Come ben sapete ci ha lasciato Akira Toriyama, creatore di Dragonball, Dr. Slump e Arale etc., deceduto il primo marzo a 68 anni per via di un'emorragia celebrale.

Questo post è nasce con l'intento di ricordare un grande autore che ha unito più generazioni, che ha permesso a tante persone di farsi degli amici, di abbattere la timidezza, iniziare diverse passioni etc.

Akira ha cambiato in parte il mondo e il modo di vedere i manga in Giappone, ha dato una spinta non indifferente a tutto ciò. Molti dei manga/serie che esistono oggi le dovete anche a Dragonball.

Quindi grazie per averci regalato tante emozioni, averci insegnato valori, e che le persone possono riuscirci anche se partono da 0.

Porteremo le mani al cielo, come abbiamo sempre fatto.

I'm gonna start watching DBGT for the first time... I hope my sanity survives

Okay, that may be a bit OTT, I admit. But, from what I know of GT it's not that great. Good ideas, poor execution. I'll be watching it in Japanese with subs, just to give it what I feel like is going to be the best chance of impressing me.

For one, it has Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku as it's OP instead of some dumb 90s wannabe rap. They could have made a competent rap song for it at least, but no, no they made Welcome to the Grand Tour...

Also, by watching the sub, I'll avoid any potential dubisms that would probably just worsen the experience. And 90s dubs aren't known to be faithful to the original source material anyway.

I'll be live blogging my thoughts as I go along. Well, I say live blogging, but more likely I'll add something after every few episodes with some thoughts during the episodes if something big happens...

I know a bit about the show, but not a whole lot. So I'll try to be as fair as I can, but my hopes aren't that high. I'm expecting it to range from kinda eh to decent for the most part.

And I'm going to be doing this shit sober, since unlike some bad shows, I think this is going to be tolerable without numbing myself with alcohol.
