To answer a question in your tags, Tommy is still an active firefighter. He won't always be piloting a helicopter, he can also be flown to a location to fight a fire. Part of his job also includes fighting wildfires.

The diner was dead, the buzz of lights and the sound of a grill top sizzling away the only noise filtering through the area. Karen recalled the last time she'd been with Frank in a diner in the middle of the night, the yellow glow of lights filtering through as they discussed why she didn't shoot him when he appeared at her door.

(The smartest thing she'd done was not put a bullet in Frank Castle that night, a thought that dogged her heels for weeks as she worked on patching up bullet holes in drywall.)

Her smile was genuine as he noted she was a shit magnet; that was no lie. "Can't help it that people don't like their dirty laundry aired." She plucked up a knife, dipping it into the dish of butter to swipe it across the piece of bread she'd ripped off, deciding to not beat around the bush. "Have you seen the news?"

Why his showing up would be the slightest bit surprising to her is beyond her. This has always been her lot in life. And yes, she chose it, and will keep choosing it because it's the right thing to do. But that doesn't always mean it's a decision she's happy with.
