"Megumiiiii. Ya wanna tell me something? Like, dunno, maybe something's on your mind? Or someone?" You didn't delete your search history, rascal.
Tumblr media
Unprompted harassment.
Megumi's pencil stops right over the feather of a peacock. Eye twitching slightly, he slowly squints at the page, frown deepening. He knew that tone of voice very well, and Satoru knew he did as well. This was the beginning of a game that had been played before and would be played again many times to come, both refusing to lose.
Tumblr media
"No. Nothing." calmly focusing back on the book, he idly continues to color the drawing, as though the question barely deserved his attention, "What's for dinner? Can we get pizza? I kinda feel like mushrooms and cheese."

Diverge (2016)
Tumblr media
Diverge will make you wish you had a time machine so you can either warn yourself not to watch it or travel into the future to when the film is over, which might be something like 3 hours? Oh, wait. it only clocks in at 85 minutes. It only FEELS like it lasts half a day because the film is so boring.
In a post-apocalyptic world, a strange disease has wiped out most of humanity. Chris Towne (Ivan Sandomire) is sent back in time by a scientist (Jamie Jackson as Dimitri Tarkov) to save his wife and in the process, all of humankind.
Written, directed and edited by James Morrison (in his directorial debut), the film sort of plays out like a bargain-bin 12 Monkeys. We begin with Chris and his wife Anna (Erin Cunningham) wandering through a seemingly endless salt flat. The implication is that the earth has dried up… but wait. A biological disease that kills people (and cows) caused the apocalypse, not some heat wave. What’s going on? Anyway, soon after, Anna dies and Chris is sent back in time against his will. Of all the people who might’ve survived the end of the world, one is the inventor of a time machine and the other is the person who unwillingly fumbled the cure that could’ve prevented this whole thing from happening? What are the odds? I know, I know. The plot’s got to happen somehow but we’re talking the first fifteen minutes of the film and already, things are looking wobbly. Still, I won't dock points for that.
Plot holes and contrivances are not the film’s downfall. The biggest sin Diverge commits is the biggest sin any movie can commit: it’s boring. Chris is not an interesting protagonist. All he does is meekly wander around, trying his best to accomplish his mission without ever stressing out or even running. The most enthusiasm he shows is when he catches a glimpse of his wife. The past version of the character is similarly dull. As for the film’s villain, he's wholly unnecessary and cut from the same cloth as Umbrella Corp. but way less fun. It isn’t uncommon for science-fiction stories to be a little light on the character development; they’re often about the plot rather than the characters. The thing is that Diverge has such a basic plot there’s just nothing for you to latch onto. Yes, Chris is going back in time to save the world. We’ve seen that before. So. Many. Times. It’s not enough but this film acts as if it is.
You’ll be so desperate for some substance you’ll find yourself rewriting the movie. What if future Chris wanted to kill and replace his younger version because now, he’s matured and become a better person? If that sounds wild, it wouldn’t be unprecedented in this film. At one point, Dimitri travels back in time so he can kill his past self and take his place. “Woah! Spoiler alert!” you might say but I disagree because this event doesn’t affect Chris or the plot in any way whatsoever.
Although I struggled to stay awake during Diverge (a terrible title by the way), I won’t call it wholly devoid of merit. As a first film, it’s well-shot and makes pretty good use of its (surely) minuscule budget. Sometimes, a bad movie proves the people in charge are complete hacks. Though Diverge is unimaginative, unengaging and unmemorable, this is not one of those cases. (July 29, 2022)

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

I guess here King Arthur was a real dude who became legend after his death (in which demons and angels might have been involved). Our heroes now have a mystery to solve, with the help of a certain sorcerer.......

DES 302 - Week 5
Week five has been a big week. It began with getting feedback from my stream group on my ideas and presentation. After this feedback, I have changed my vision for my assignment. I also spent time reflecting on my feedback from the 302 Blog assignment.
For this reflection, I will use the four F’s of active reviewing.
Fact: I was standing in front of my stream group, and I asked what they thought of my assignment and my intended idea. People in the group gave feedback that maybe a book for people with dyslexia isn’t the best idea. One person said to look at precedents for other ways dyslexic people can record their thoughts and feelings. Some other feedback is that I could show how dyslexia affects people. There were lots of different feedback angles.
Feelings: After the feedback, I sat down. I was super overwhelmed and lost in my assignment. Clearly, I haven’t picked the best solution for my research question. I was confused. I took a lot of the feedback at face value and didn’t understand. I found that when I stood up there, I just nodded and didn’t have too much of a reaction. I just wanted to hear what everyone had to say. I felt I needed to take time and not overwhelm myself.
Findings: I think the reason my outcome from this feedback session was successful is that I didn’t react too soon. I took time to listen and take notes from each perspective of my idea. When I took time after the session, I felt much better about my assignment. I was feeling lost, and now having more ideas is helpful for my research going forward.
Future: I was proud of myself for standing in front of the group to get feedback. I originally wasn’t going to, but I decided to give it a go. I think my main outcome for this was that over the next week, I need to take some time to go back and diverge to emerge. This is a step I would’ve not done if I didn’t get the feedback. I need to take time to go and do more brainstorming to come up with a stronger outcome.
The next step in the week was reflecting on the 302 assignment feedback. Reflecting on the feedback I received made a lot of sense. I am not always describing the action I will take when revising steps. Over the past week, I have been feeling lost. I have been confused about how I’m going to get my final outcome finished. I am finding that my research isn’t working for me. Over the next week, I will skip to idea sketching and return to exercises in the Solution discovery phase, such as empathy mapping and the business model canvas. I need to develop a vision to see the bigger picture. Therefore, it will be easier to work through these activities, hopefully!
To diverge, I have watched several videos to learn more about the types of dyslexia and understand it much more profoundly. One of my favourite images I found was an image from Dyslexia the gift blog
Tumblr media
Figure one: A picture from a spelling list. Dyslexia the gift blog.
I love this idea of making images out of words. This is an idea I want to bring into my book as lot's of dyslexic people think in images.

Lumen’s stock slides toward 37-year low amid doubts company can ‘sharply diverge from its history’
Tumblr media
Shares of Lumen Technologies Inc. were extending their declines Tuesday, off 5.2% and on track for their lowest close in 37 years. Even an upgrade from Raymond James analyst Frank Louthan IV failed to convey much optimism for the beaten-down telecommunications name, which has shed 85% of its value over the past 12 months. Changing hands at $1.81 in Tuesday’s session, Lumen’s LUMN, -4.97% stock is on pace to log its lowest close since it traded at that level on Feb. 27, 1986, according to Dow Jones Market Data. See also: Lumen Technologies’ stock sinks after full-year revenue outlook was below expectations Lumen shares “can, and in the short term likely will, decline further (maybe even by significant percentages), but the risk/reward of being at Underperform is low at this point; as such, we would rather be on the sidelines,” Louthan wrote as he lifted his rating on the name to market perform. “Macro factors are more likely to drive the stock than fundamental performance from here, in our view.” Louthan’s upgrade came after Lumen held a Monday investor-day presentation that highlighted the company’s attempts to deal with a business that is largely in decline. “Management outlined a significant number of changes they are implementing to simplify the business, make it easier to interact with customers, and drive broader, more complex solution-based sales,” he wrote. “The question here is not what these products are or how they are different, but one of execution and timing of tangible results.” See also: AT&T’s stock nabs a lukewarm upgrade SVB MoffettNathanson analyst Nick Del Deo described Lumen’s management as “earnest, genuine, committed, and enthusiastic” as they outlined multiyear financial projections at Monday’s event. “To join them, one must believe that Lumen’s results can sharply diverge from its history and the performance of the market in which it operates,” he wrote in a note to clients. “We don’t doubt that many of the steps the company is taking can improve its results. But we’ve also been students of the telecom market for long enough to observe that companies in this space rarely meet their longer-term projections.” In his experience, “market structure has historically been the greatest single determinant of results in this space,” and right now, “the structure of the business wireline market is quite poor.” Del Deo has an underperform rating on Lumen shares. Of the 14 analysts tracked by FactSet who cover Lumen’s stock, two have buy ratings, six have neutral ratings and six have sell ratings, and the company was hard-pressed to find true believers after Monday’s presentation. “ long-term financial targets are generally higher than our estimates, which are unchanged, as we await further execution proof points against its key strategic priorities,” Goldman Sachs analyst Brett Feldman wrote in reiterating a neutral rating. Gregory Williams of TD Cowen, who rates the stock at market perform, said that Lumen’s “execution toward its ‘show me’ 2025 financial stability target is paramount to solve its 2027 debt walls.” See more: Lumen debt exchange shows beaten-down company plans to ‘fight it out’ amid investor doubts Source link Read the full article
