First Line, Last Line, Best Line

I was tagged by the wonderful @blossom-adventures (thank you very much! 💖) to give away the first, last, and best lines of my fic—I'm gonna give a few author's notes in each one, because Why Not...😇

First Line!

Laat Dovahkiin is not the ordinary heroine of the coveted legend Skyrim always envisioned; a child out of wedlock, unlucky enough to never meet her own parents, condemned to the most unjust of deaths at the executioner's axe by the age of twenty.

Okay, these were the very first lines I ever wrote for TPATD, and even though I wrote them when I was still a bit of a novice in writing (and probably would have written them a bit differently now), they pretty much encapsulate the heroine I wanted to make for this story: a person who's painfully ordinary and relatable, enduring Struggles™ as much as any other person in Skyrim, and none of her Dragonborn powers coming to her easily—my poor blorbo has got her ass kicked Multiple Times before she finally reached where she's now, and I'm very proud of her!

Last Line!

If the word emotional has a synonym term, that would be Jia's name and state at this exact moment. She nods her head furiously, swallowing her sobs again and again and again until her bobbing throat is almost scraped and bleeding. While she squeezes her arms around his waist, fingers clawing desperately on his back, Miraak's jaw rests on the crown of her head, his hand getting lost inside her thick unbound mane as he strokes it. "Yes, we stay; we stay here tonight," Jia repeats, almost as though talking to herself. "And—and we will come back when everything's all over; I promise you this, dii shir iilahil. I promise you."  Gods only know how she will fulfill that promise most verily.

These are the lines of the freshly-baked chapter 18! They take place somewhere that will play a significant role at a crucial point of the story, and it's Jia and Miraak in a moment of shared vulnerability (especially on Miraak's part, even if these lines seem to connote Jia's more. I won't spoil more, though).

Best Line!

And yet, amidst her suffering, something seems to soothe her too-tired soul because for once in her life... she did it. In this safe haven Miraak has built for her, she made it to unfold every trace of her pain, lift it up to his mouth like a ripe fruit to bite, with him declaring in return, look at me sinking my teeth in it and swallowing it out of your soul. 

I struggled a lot to find my best line as I have many favorites, but this is the one that came first to mind, and went for it. Not only because of the hurt/comfort theme as it appears superficially, but mainly because these lines highlight exactly what I have in mind for Jia's and Miraak's soul-bond: whatever emotion the one has, the other feels it right in their soul, as though they are woven into one another's essences. It's a shared pain, and even though Miraak didn't know the details of her past sufferings, when she finally revealed them to him with words, he felt like he had, somehow, experienced them too... So he basically thinks here, "let me relieve you from all this pain; it's not only yours to carry, it's also mine."

Not saying the Cage The Elephant Tour In Raleigh NC On August 3 2024 Poster shirt ones won’t be decent however you will get what you paid for- they won’t last forever that’s for sure. I bought a bunch of decorations last year from a store in Australia along the same line as Walmart. I bought them for a DIY pool noodle wreath I decided to give a go (not crafty at all btw lol) anyway they were pretty ordinary some of them I had to throw away, very cheaply made but I got what I paid for. Every year we go to Pottery Barn to buy a couple of new special ornaments, it’s become a tradition. They are gorgeous and the quality is very good, still made in China. Bottom line is if you want something that’s going to last forever and look the same each year, pay a higher price point at either higher end department stores, one off boutique stores etc. My ornaments from places like Costco and Cracker Barrel etc still look good too. If how long they last doesn’t matter so much then go for the cheaper stuff. Thanks for the A2A.

Okay so idk how into Lolita OP is but imma structure this for people who are interested but dont know where to start.

To note for both OP and others, it's best to know your measurements in CM as well as many brands provide measurements in CM only

Also, know my size is around 53 in so these are brands i know ill fit and there for OP and others most likely will

Now, I'm going to structure this into three parts

Non Lolita brands

Indie Brands

Japanese Brands

Non Lolita places

You're not going spend over like 60$ for peices from these places.

1. HOT TOPIC

This might be a bit controversial, but a lot of my blouses that i use with coords are from HT. Thanks to the rise of cute core/cotage core, there are a lot of lolita esque blouse from their Sweet Society brand that you can use in a coord if you know what to look for with a lolita blouse.

My advice is to look at the sleeves and collar. Puff sleeves and scalloped/peter pan collars with some ruffles are what you want to look for.

Also, HT sometimes sells skirts that with a little bit of DIY (aka adding some lace, ruffleles, and maybe better suspenders), You can get a fairly lolita (or lolita esque) main peice.

Also, they sometimes sell waistcoats that can go with an Ouji coord.

Again, if you know what you're doing.

I recommend buying during sales. You can get blouses for like 25 bucks

2. Hell Bunny

This was recommended to from a veteran lolita ehrn i asked about plus size blouse myself. A bit better quality than HT, and the price refelcts that. Again, look for puff sleeves and peater pan collars. If you're waring a JSK, those two things are kind of all that matters.

3. Target

I have never found a blouse at Target, BUT many lolitas and my dried who also is in the fashion (and works there) have! Like the other two, it really comes down to the sleeves and collars, and they do tend to sell out fast. But if you see one, grab it!!

Indie Brands

You're probably gonna spend like between 50 to 250$ for main peices with these stores

NightWhisper Lolita

I LOVE NWL!!!! Its my go to recommendation for newbies in lolita. They're located in the US, very responsive, rather affordable (for lolita that is) and have REALLY generous sizing. We're talking like max bust being 190cm on their recent dress for pre order!

They also have a variety of blouses that tend to run around 130cm max bust, iirc. It varies between listings :3

I was able to make a kuro coord with a dress, petticoat, and blouse from there, and all of my pieces are so roomy and comfy :3

Fuwaya

Another brand I've bought from! They're based in Singapore, but let it be known: their sizong tends to be genrous as well! They don't really do shiring that much. It seems unlike NWL so max bust is MAX BUST with no give.

Other than that, i found the dress i got from them (halloween themed) to be pretty good and roomy a bit. I will recommend doing preorders if you're plus sized because their in stock large sizes sell quick!

MeLikesTea

This Brazilian brand is a STAPLE in the international lolita community tbh. They mainly do petticoats (really comfy ones too tbh), but they've recently branched out to dress and blouses. Their dresses give more casual lolita vibes, but still.

Rebellious Lamb

I've never bought from em but people in my local community have and have been pleased with them. I'm not too sure how to order from them, but I heard they're very responsive to instagram dms. Also, i think they can do custom sizing for an upcharge since i see it on their site

Sleepy Time Land

Another brand I've haven't bought from but people from my com have and love what they got. Again: very generous sizing for both blouses and dresses. Blouses can be considered pricey compared to other option but also theyre like, fully shirred which is GOOD

GlitterTale

I've bought from them before and liked my items. They can make you literally ANYTHING. And best of all? It's ALL CUSTOM SIZING!! Im not kidding. People like to go to them for design dupes cuz of it. You have to directly message them, and they're most active on FB first and Instagram second iirc despite having an etsy as well.

And when i say they can make anything. You can literally dm them and ask for a price quote of an original design using one of the fabrics they have listed or ask for a design that theyve made before.

Also you can just buy only their fabric if you want

The only thing is some people have had issues with sizing sometimes, and they do take months to fulfill orders, but personally, i like them (cow ouji coord, i promise im coming for you)

Dollbe

The priciest brand of this section but also it is a one man store. Literally one person designs and sews everything. Sizing goes to 60 inches, at least for blouses. I think they might go bigger for dresses, but im not too sure. Right now theyre selling only blouses on their Etsy but a new drop seems to be coming soon 👀

Japanese brands

The OGs. You looking at 120$ minimum for ONE blouse and like 300$ for a dress

Metamorphose Temps de Fille

THE GO TO for plus size brand clothing. I think they started including plus size options around 2020 and now most collections come with a plus size option. Unfortunately plus size can vary from release to release and item to item but! Dresses with shiring tend to go up to 140 bust, 130 waist and same with the blouses. If the design is without shiring, normally both blouses and dresses are like a max 120. And Ouji pants (which they just started back doing) is about 100cm waist max. They also have a Plus Plus Size section which is international shipping only and tends to go up to like, 150 -160cm but is more limited with releases. One time i saw a blouse go up to 200cm. (Fully shirred of course)

ATELIER PIERROT

Another brand opening up its doors to plus size, AtePie is kind of know to be real accessible to international lolitas. Their options are more limited compared to Meta but again, tends to go up to around 140 cm for blouses and skirts, sometimes more

Lovely Maximam

The plus size line of brand MAXIMAM, Lovely Mam tends to run on the smaller side with most things going to max 120cm and SOME 135cm. Most items are basic looking solids, tho they DO got a jean lolita dress

(Also their Japanese site has a dress whos bust and waist is no joke max 170cm so if you got a proxy go nuts)

"But what about Chinese Brands???"

Besties imma be real: navigating tabao deserves a post of its own. But as someone whos been doing lolita for 5 years lemme just say DO NOT BUY FROM DEVIL INSPIRED. Theyre a taoba reseller who charge extremely high prices for item on taobao

Also they stop listing the brand that made the items on their store (probably because they say people note the brand name and buy directly from the brand on taobao instead of through them.

I know theyre kinda popular on tumblr because of their aesthetic shots, but seriously, dont buy from there. This article really goes over it but avoid them if you can. Lolitawardrobe or 42Lolita are better options

Or! You can figure out how to use a proxy and buy straight from taobao since there are plus size friendly stores there but, again, thats pretty hard.

You can also always buy second hand through LaceMarket. Many people tend to sell their altered or custom peices on there and its the go to place for second hand lolita! My first dress was a baby ponytail dress that was customed to be plus size that i bought off there

And if you're extra crafty or adventurous. You can always make your own stuff. I complied a master doc of lolita tutorials that have survived so far :3

This is by no means an extensive list but a good start :3

Use of wide elastic bands

In the world of crafting and DIY projects, wide elastic bands are indispensable for a variety of applications. Whether you're sewing, knitting, or crocheting, elastic bands can be used to hold fabric or yarn in place, preventing slipping and ensuring precise stitching. They can also be used to create gathers, ruching, or shirring in garments, adding texture and dimension to your creations. Additionally, wide elastic bands are good for securing items together during glueing or painting, providing a temporary bond that can be easily removed once the project is complete.

PSA for other folk not in the "normal" size ranges- DIY shirring is not nearly as daunting as it seems!

Part one of two: Making Replacement Shirring to Expand the Bodice of a JSK (or other styles/dresses, this is not limited to the realm of lolita fashion!)

A few things to note:

I am not a professional seamstress, and I'm probably doing some steps in an asinine, backwards manner, but hey- they work for me... 😬👍🏻

I have never written a tutorial on any of my sewing projects before now, I wish you luck lol

I didn't think to photograph some stages of the process such as taking out the existing shirring, but once I thought about it I did grab these while working on the new one to the best of my ability. I'll try to at least describe anything not pictured.

I am not an expert in lolita fashion. I've fawned over it for over a decade, a newbie to wearing it personally. I still have many things to learn!

This is actually my very first (be it indie) brand jsk (!!!), recieved in one of Soufflesong's recent lucky packs- what I think is an older design for the Rossellt Roses print, the bodice is a different design from the current one available.

I selected XL, the highest size available for them at the time, knowing that the items would still be a few inches shy of fitting comfortably.

Tools and materials: dress to alter, matching, nice quality, comfortable feeling fabric, elastic, matching colored sewing thread, seam ripper, ruler, a non-staining, fabric safe, washable sewing pencil or chalk, sewing pins, safety pins, and a sewing machine!

So first, using a seam ripper -carefully- remove the existing shirring or back panel! Save this fabric, I'm making accessories with my scraps, you can too! :3

Your replacement fabric needs to be cut twice the height of the piece you removed (folding this piece in half while we work creates a sleek and professional looking interior, beautiful top edge, and the easiest elastic casing you'll ever sew), adding any extra seam allowance that you prefer (I typically work with 1cm), and the width should be the measurement of the existing piece you removed + the shortage from the dress fitting properly + a bit more for gathering (I estimated an extra 10cm or so), and another two seam allowances for the sides. In the image above the fabric is already folded in half, the fold at the top where indicated.

The next step is to measure and mark where the casings will be. For this step I measured the spacing for the existing casing on the old panel, translating this to the new fabric. You can also choose to decide on the spacing yourself. Make sure that the channels are wide enough to accommodate the elastic you've picked up (I am using 1/4" elastic, making 1cm channels), and not too wide where your elastic can go swimming and do somersaults.

After lightly marking the lines across, pin the fabric to keep the back piece (from folding it in half earlier) secured in place as you sew all of your casings.

Cut the necessary amount of elastic strips- I typically measure elastic in scenarios such as this by cutting a length that, when gently stretched almost to it's full extent, will reach from one end of the channel to the other.

Put small safety pins through the ends- we're using these lil friends to feed the elastic through! You can get crafty and pull them through with a long wire or something of the sort from there, but at least having something attached to the ends helps to shimmy them across from the outside of the fabric.

Once you have an end of the elastic pulled to the edge of fabric, secure it in place with a couple of quick stitches so you can pull it through to the other side to do the same.

Continue until all pieces are worked in with both ends sewn in place.

A few years back I tried shirring, it was a disaster. Recently @kmakesthings did a few garments using the technique, so I gave it another try. I altered my favorite self drafted plazzo pants to have a shorter waistband, and shirred it. Cute, right? I found out where I went wrong with my original shirring attempt. I needed a screwdriver and a lot less fear! My machine has a bobbin case for the bobbin, and I needed to loosen the tension. I'm going to be honest, I've never loosened it THAT much. Luckily the guy at my local machine show told me that he'd help me fix it if I completely broke the case. Green Roses Bouquet dress - Part II

In early spring I went to the musical "Little Shop of Horrors" and decided to sew myself a green dress to wear for the occasion. I absolutely adore this subtle rose fabric and am really happy I now finally turned it into a wearable garment!!

I used my trusty lolita dress pattern. This time I added additional decorative lace to the bodice and straps. The bow at the front is a brooch, so I can further switch it up.

When I tried the dress on for the final time after finishing the zipper broke!! I was so sad and stressed.. After sleeping on it I decided to sew it shut. The zipper is not necessary to put the dress on (due to the shirring panel at the back), it only makes taking the dress on & off easier. After sewing half of the zipper shut I managed to make the rest work again. So now I have half an opening for getting dressed. So far the zipper has given me no more problems!!

The beautiful felted hair leaf is made by my friend (@gisa.frog at IG). We did a couple of DIY swaps were she made me pretty felted accessories!

Hi! I just started sewing my own clothes and I wanted to try to make a long sleeved simple classical op for the colder seasons (since I will still have to improve my skills I'm trying to plan and make it a lot earlier than I will be able to wear it haha). Now my issue is that my weight often fluctuates a lot and all my jsks and skirts i made have shirring. I'm just wondering if i can make the op the same way by just adding a shirred panel in the back or if it won't work like that. Thanks :)

You can definitely use shirring for an OP! You could do something where just part of the back is shirred like this:

Or you could do something where the full back is shirred like this:

Or you could do full shirring all around:

Or an alternative to shirring could be something like this where the size of the waist is controlled by the drawstring but I feel like it gives a little less freedom of size than shirring.
