i love how every single time julian gets in a runabout with someone he doesnt talk to a lot hes like hey why aren't we friends :( and then something ranging from moderately to extremely traumatic happens to the characters for plot and at the end of the episode he makes them like him lmao

DS9 rewatch - Move Along Home

I was rewatching 1x10 "Move Along Home" (I'm rewatching Star Trek in air date order starting from TNG, so now my TNG rewatch has become a TNG/DS9 rewatch). Of course my partner and I disagree on whether "Move Along Home" is a terrible episode with almost no redeeming features vs. it's fine actually. Part of our disagreement seems to hinge on the fact that my partner thinks that the Wadi themselves are dodgy shyster types very similar to Quark (hence why they KNOW a cheat when they see one) and I just think they're weirdo game nerds who wouldn't think to cheat at games and so get very upset when other people try to cheat them.

Anyway, I went to look up the script for the episode hoping to see if it contained any hints indicating the intended read of the Wadi. I didn't find anything, but instead I found this little Garashir moment that was sadly cut from the episode:

DAX I'm not sure it's appropriate to have a Cardassian tailor make your Starfleet uniform, Julian... maybe the replicator...

I can't believe that Garak telling Julian that he misses him and their lunches together wasn't real and it was ALL PART OF A SIMULATION NOOOO

And then what had me sobbing was when Garak was shot by a Jem'Hadar, he told Julian he would no longer be able to make it to that week's lunch with him 😭😭😭

DS9 casually confronting the racist and ableist argument of “exceptionalism” like:

The age-old inspiration porn argument about otherwise-abled people and how if they try hard enough they can “contribute to society, and rise above their challenges!” is shown here, and as a disabled woman, I LOVE it.  This takes place during an episode in which Julian interacts with other genetically “enhanced” adults who have developed mental illness as a side effect of their enhancement, and who, unlike him, cannot live in a “normal” world with a “normal” life.  

They even have a POC and other-coded (Klingon, not human) character make the mistake, to subtly drive home the point that being a person of color doesn’t mean you won’t ever fall for xenophobic narratives.  We’re all susceptible and we all have to check ourselves at regular intervals for our biases.

Rewatching ds9 with the knowledge that julian bashir is genetically enhanced is so fucking funny. He holds himself back in almost everything except for when he plays racketball with miles o'brien. When they play, he goes as hard as he can for no reason besides his ego and just fucking with miles

lwaxana troi has such disastrous pansexual energy to me. i can see her touring ds9 (so shes by herself and randomly walking thru any open door lmao) and she walks into the gym. And theres jadzia, pumping iron like the buff daddy she is. lwaxana for once is utterly speechless

been rewatching DS9 for breakfast and before I sleep haven't had the strength to write much about it b/c editing but today an episode that meant a lot to me as a kid came up

that episode was not one of the usual suspects. it was Blood Oath

it meant a ton that Jadzia - a young woman - could have given an oath in a past life and go into battle because of that oath and because of what it meant to her and that she'd disobey an order to do so and that she didn't know if she could but she did anyway and that the fact that she was a science officer turned the tide and that she left the kill to her friend because she knew how much it meant to him and that she came back and there were no conversations just a quiet "yeah. you did that." very simple dialogue, very simple plotting meant a ton to me as a 10-year-old girl

I got my friend/roommate into Star Trek because they started watching a few episodes of ds9 with me and now we watch together! But! I'm worried that ds9 is a bad starter show for her because it's so different from the rest of trek,,, do I try to get them to watch other shows with me when I finish my ds9 rewatch or just accept that they're only ever gonna like ds9?

Audrid, the Dax host who borrows Quark's body, just asked Jadzia if she's a mother and said she hopes she gets to be some day and. The first time I watched this it was a haha Quark hates this thing. And now. OUCH.
